Fai stood in the doorway of Ashura's room and shook his head. "Your majesty."
"Fai." The king repeated back to him not moving from his spot next to the fire, or looking up from the book he was reading. Still wearing his pajamas, Ashura had missed breakfast and lunch, and dinner was only hours away. All his meetings for the day had been cancelled and he had not spoken to the blonde all day.
And the king called him childish…
"You can't keep avoiding me forever you know." Fai remained in his spot next to the door way.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Ashura turned the page of his book still refusing to look up, causing his adoptive son to sigh.
"The avoiding me part, or that you can't do it forever?" There was a long pause and the king finally looked up from his book. There was a long silence and the two stared at each other through every second with the same perfect smile.
Ashura was the one to brake first—He had raised Fai to play the games of the Celesian court well.
"How could you not tell me Fai?" the blonde received a rare pout from the normally stoic king. He took this as an invitation to enter the room, and stole a seat across from his adoptive father.
"It's not like it was a secret." Fai's tone was blasé and he smiled at the man while Ashura set his book aside.
"But you didn't tell me! I could have given you advice—this is a big deal!" Fai shook his head slowly. Yes the king was mostly likely full of advice on the subject, but honestly, Fai felt he was doing ok on his own.
Such an overreaction…
"I didn't mean to hurt your feeling Ashura-ou. I just didn't think you would be interested in hearing about who I took to bed."
"It's not that I want to know the details child. But I thought you would tell me when you fancied someone." the king leaned his chin on the palm of his hand and sighed.
Fai and Ashura had had an interesting night. The winter festival was in full swing and the blonde had made the mistake of having a few too many glasses of wine, and allowing Tennou to follow him to his room. Getting caught in the act by Ashura had been traumatic to say the least.
Fai was close to Tennou—but the relationship was nothing more than one of convince. His duties as the head of the court mages left little time for things such as romance, and he didn't think Ashura wanted to know about their little… well there privet meetings.
The blonde was sure he had mentally scarred poor Ashura-ou and probably put a target on Tennou's back.
"If you would have asked I would have told you." Fai didn't embarrass easily but this conversation was becoming painfully uncomfortable.
"I would have asked if you weren't sneaking off and keeping it a secret! How long have these secret midnight rendezvous been going on?" the blonde couldn't help but laugh awkwardly and cover his mouth with a hand in an attempt to the embarrassed smile. Trying to find his words he tucked his knees to his chest, letting the welcoming air of the fire warm his toes.
It made sense why the king's feelings were raw.
Ashura-ou had become his father figure, mentor, teacher, healer, and best friend since he had come to live in Celese so many years ago. To say that they were attached at the hip was an understatement. Even now that he was an adult and considered independent, Fai relied on Ashura heavily for emotional support.
There was no such thing as personal space between the two of them. Hence why the king felt comfortable getting all up in his romantic life.
"There were no secret midnight rendezvous… Don't you think you're being dramatic?" It wasn't as if the Ashura shared with Fai every time he skipped a meeting to woo one of the ladies of the court.
"No. You but you can't just casually forget to mention you fancy someone enough to take them to bed. Let me throw my fit." The King glared at Fai playfully and the blonde laughed. "So how long?"
"Oh… I don't know a few years maybe?" It was hard to remember when exactly it had started… Sometime after Tennou has started to accompany his father to the kings guard meetings.
"You're joking." Fai was pretty sure that last bit of information had made the situation worse but there was really no point in lying. Ashura would be able to see though him in a second.
"It was a few months after he started attending meetings with his dad." The blonde waived his hand dismissively and gave the king a beaming smile.
"You wound me child."
"It's really nothing serious. It's not like I've fallen deeply in love and am planning on eloping and moving away with him. We just get along really well." Tennou was a good listener and he 'got the job done' So to speak, so Fai liked having him around.
Not enough to introduce him to the king as his lover though.
"You've been in a committed relationship for a few years?" The look the blonde received forced another awkward laugh.
"It's not like that I swear—It's just…" Fai sighed and covered his face with both of this hands. "Convenient?"
"You honestly don't have feelings for him?" The king didn't sound as though he was buying it.
"He's nice and all but…" Fai trailed off leaving the rest unsaid. Was it really so strange that he had just wanted a no drama relationship? Why slap a label on it…
He really wanted this conversation to be over.
"So he's not going to break my sweet child's heart?" The blonde dropped his hands and shook his head slowly.
"Well I suppose that's settled then." Ashura sighed and stood. Calling for a few servants he went to his closet and started flipping through cloths.
"Really?" It was Fai's turn to question the king's true meaning.
"Yes, Yes, of course. Now shall we get ready for dinner then?" the blonde watched as Ashura pulled out a few options and tossed them onto the back of a chair.
Those were his fancy cloths…
The event coordinator as well as a few body servants entered the room and bowed. Fai remained seated and watched as Ashura grinned at the staff.
"I would like to make a change to the seating charts for dinner tonight." The king glanced as his adoptive son from the corner of his eyes.
Fai groaned loudly and stood from his spot on the couch. "Please don't do this Ashura-ou."
"Can you please move the young lord Tennou to the head table?" The woman was happy to make the change and didn't question the request.
"You're so mean!" the blonde whined loudly as he walked over to the door. If he had thought last night was awkward—he was sure think king would top it.
Ashura would make Fai wish he had told him about Tennou.
"I just want to get to know the person who has gotten so close to my sweet Fai." Ashura called as started to compare two of the outfits, holding a hanger in each hand. Looking at the event coordinator he flashed another perfect smile. "Why don't we go ahead and invite his father as well? We might as well change the way the head table is set up all together—something more intimate so I can speak with them more easily."
Fai supposed there was no stopping him now. Ashura-ou always got his way. One of the few perks of being the king. Leave it to Ashura to change the layout of the head table not even an hour before the evening festivities were about to begin.
Heading to how own room, Fai allowed his own body servants to fuss over his appearance. He waited patiently for the king, and as they had every day since Fai's first, they walked to the dining hall together for the evening meal.
Things had been arraigned just as Ashura-ou had requested. Fai was sitting to the kings right, as always. Poor Tennou was sitting directly across from Ashura and looked as though he was about to have a heart attack.
Very few people were close to his majesty. The court was full of lords and ladies from all over Celese during the festival, and it was an honor be even be able to speak with Ashura-ou, much less sit across from him at dinner.
No doubt Tennou was a nervous wreck. His father on the other hand, spent quite a bit of time with the king as he was the head of his personal guard. Taishukuten and Ashura had known each other for years and worked closely, but it was still rare for him to be sitting at the head table.
Fai just really wanted this night to be over. He knew exactly how difficult he could be at dinner when the mood struck him.
Poor, poor Tennou.
As Fai sat in his seat, he flashed the redhead an apologetic smile. Unfortunately if you wanted to be close to the ward of the king, you had to go thought the king first. So far they had skittered around that reality—but it had only been a matter of time before this was going to happen.
Fai only felt guilty for not warning the poor thing about that fact when there fling had started. Only slightly though.
"So Tennou." The smile on Ashura's face was politely menacing. The blonde poured himself a tall glass of wine and sat back to watch the show. "I don't believe we have ever had a true conversation before? Thought I may be mistaken."
Tennou was looking down politely. "No, Sire."
"Don't you find that strange considering you've been sharing a bed with my sweet Fai?" Fai didn't catch the look on the red heads face because he had to tip his head back to finish off his first glass of wine in one go.
"No way." Taishukuten looked at his son. "That's who you've been seeing?"
"Oh yes, Lord Taishukuten. You should have seen them last night." Fai watched Tennou's cheeks go from ghostly white to the same color as his crimson hair. If he blushed much harder, Fai was sure there would be a bruise tomorrow.
"Will all due respect my King." Fai sighed while he poured himself another glass of wine. The first course hadn't even been served yet… "I don't think that's considered polite dinner conversation."
"Perhaps not, But were all men here." The king sat back in his seat and continued to smile at Tennou who looked as though his soul had left his body from the embarrassment. "—Right?"
"R—right." The redhead stumbled over the single word and continued to focus on the table in front of him.
"So Fai must be pretty special to you then Tennou." A single kingly eyebrow was raised.
"I—I uh…"
"Let me tell you Your Grace—" Taishukuten seemed to be just as amused as Ashura that his sons embarrassment. "—all I've heard about is how fond he is of his lover. We wouldn't tell me who it was though."
"Interesting—" was it really Fai wondered? "—Fai never mentioned him to me once. The children seem to be keeping secrets from us."
Fai finished off his second glass of wine. He doubted Tennou was going to get through the night without out all of that blushing causing a brain aneurism.
"Is that so?" Lord Taishukuten turned his attention to Fai.
"It's not like it was a secret." The blonde reiterated the point he had made to the king earlier. "Is it really such a shock?"
"Lord Fai," the silver haired king's guard smirked. "I have known you since you were a small child and I never thought you would ever fall for my Tennou. So how did it happen?"
Fai felt his cheeks flush finally. "Why don't you tell the story Tennou?"
"We uhh… that is— we work closely together and just started talking."
Ashura better not complain after this dinner was over. Fai was almost tempted to get his own revenge for this painfully awkward meal. All eyes were on the head table—no doubt the rumors were already forming and circulating.
"I see." Ashura smiled at the closest thing to a son he had. "That's lovely. I cant wait to get to know you better Tennou."
