I whipped into the parking lot of my favorite spot in all of Bon Temps, throwing up a bit of gravel. There was a small group in the shadows by the trees, just out of the light of Sam's trailer and the back of the bar.
Little mind was paid to them as I threw my door open, dropping to the ground with a clatter. Some things had fallen from the van with me. A little laugh left me as I bent to grab the items. It was stuff that I had yet to put in the back to organize. The door slammed shut, causing the group to glance up.
My feet took me quickly through the back door, humming as I went.
"Fae!"
I blindly waved behind me at Jason coming from the men's room. He looked surprised to see me. I had gotten off work later than normal. I swung the door to the office open and beamed.
"They gave me my own van!" I chirp, smugly looking to Sam.
"Good!" Sam looked happy for me, leaning back from the ledger he had been busy with. "Now you don't have to keep bugging me."
I gave a slight pout, hip jutting to the side. "But I like when you give me rides."
"Rides?"
We both turned our attention to the voice behind me. Sookie stood behind me with one brow attempting to lift (failing I add), and a hand on her hip. Oh my. That look was clearly the form of an upset Sook. I turn, letting my rear fall backwards without care. Papers shifted and fell as I plopped against the desk corner. Bill and that blond from a few nights back were behind Sook.
Sook stood obstinately in the doorway, clearly blocking my way. The men behind her looked so serious. Bill was frowning a little. The blond had the smallest of smirks. I was beaming with pride as I crossed my ankles and my arms. There were stains on my clothing, varying things. My hair had been in a bun at the beginning of the day. Due to my work it was hanging lower, strands and sections out of place. I looked sloppy and didn't care. It had been a nice day.
Sam didn't stand, just shifted the things around my butt so more wouldn't fall. My own brow lifted as I remarked.
"Oh you know. Long, hard rides." I purred out that one word. Sookie's cheeks flushed quickly, shifting on her feet.
"Fae, you have problems," she mutters, looking away as I wiggled my eyebrows perversely at her with a huge smile.
A laugh left me, arms dropping as I fall onto her. My arms drape over her shoulders, face pressing to her cheek.
"But I thought you loved me, Sook? I love you," I playfully pout out.
"What took you so long to get here?" she asks, pushing me off with little care.
Her hand was still smashed to my face as I leaned against it. I'd had a bit too much caffeine. My favorite addiction. I leaned back after a long moment, hands going to my belt loops.
"Long day. One of the other girls is sick or something. Had to take their schedule too."
"Isn't that over working you?" Sookie asks, incredulous as she looks at the stains. "Is that blood?"
"Hm?" I look down, stretching the shirt to look. A good amount of it was over my chest. "Yeah. Some kid committed suicide or something. The church called us in to clean it up for them."
"That's terrible!" Sookie gasps.
I shrug, hands going back to their belt loops. "Nothing big, Sook. The kid had cancer or something. Wanted an out."
"You're so un feeling," she frowns, a bit disappointed.
"Sookie," I sigh, hand lifting to ruffle my hair. "I've no right to judge the kid. He did what he thought was best. I won't pity him. It doesn't make me a monster to not be bothered by it. If I worried over every life lost, especially those who I don't know, I would get nowhere."
"That isn't the point, Fae-"
"Sookie."
We both looked back to Bill. He gave her a pointed look. She sighed, shoulders sinking. After a deep breath she turned back to me.
"Do you work in the morning?"
"How does that matter?" I ask, shifting to lean on Sam's desk again.
She huffs, looking to the side. She didn't want to meet my eyes. "I need your help."
"Sookie," Sam cuts, on his feet suddenly. "Don't go dragging other people into-"
My look hardens as Sam cuts off with a flash of a dark look from Sookie. She couldn't be in trouble. Not with a vampire …. Ugh. I take that back.
"Sookie. I came home to leave that all behind. There is no good in working with vampires." Sookie looked so serious as she looked at me. She was listening, though she would gladly argue back. The blond was frowning in thought, brooding almost. "I would have thought you understood this." I sigh, hand lifting to rake hair from my eyes as I looked at the wall. "How deep are you?"
"Not far, Fae. It's just for me. I'd feel better if another was there."
My lip gets pulled in while I think, shoulders sinking. "You got me in so much trouble last time, Sook."
"No trouble this time," she quickly says, hands on my shoulders. "No cops."
"Ugh!" I groan loudly, head getting thrown back. "Jason will be so pissed if he finds out."
"So?" Sookie demands with a challenging smile. Oh, that's the Sook that I loved. I grinned devilishly at her, smile wide and teeth flashing.
"Sam, keep an eye on my van for me?"
"Sug', think about this before you go jumping in."
Sam was looking angrily at the vampires, hand resting on my shoulder. I look back to him with a huge smile.
"Come on now. I've told you family comes first." I wink at him. "I'll have to take a rain check on that ride though."
"Seriously, Fae!" Sookie scolds as I hint back to that remark from earlier. Sam chuckles, shaking his head at me.
"Just watch yourself."
I sling my arms around Sookie, jerking her against me into a side hug. We were moving for the door with my guidance. The vampires stepped to the side to allow us out. Sookie didn't protest.
"So, tell me what we're doing?"
"Can we talk outside?"
"Nope. I need a beer and you know La is waiting for my order."
"Right now?" she was frowning at me again. "I swear you're as bad as Jason."
I shrug, breaking from her as I stop at the order window by Holly.
"Hey there, girl," she greets, smiling at me. "The usual?"
"Yeah. Just one mug today, no pitcher."
"Jason already got you one," she says with a head nod into the main room. Jason was waving me over with a huge grin. Hoyt was there too. A burger and mug waiting at the third chair. Clearly he had ordered for me while I was in the back. I laugh, batting her arm softly before moving toward the table.
"Sookie, we need to hurry."
I spared Bill only a glance as I flounced into the chair waiting for me. Sookie made a face before taking the mug from my rising hand.
"Hey now! I was drinking that."
"I need to speak with you, Fae. Now."
There was a force that she hardly ever used around me. I frown, feet thunking as they fell from Jason's lap. Jason frowned a bit in confusion.
"Fine."
The chair scraped the floor as I stood, moving for the restrooms. Sookie was on my heels. Once the door shut, a tense feeling filled the room. It wasn't from me.
"Move in with me."
"Excuse me?" That was it?
My eyes were a bit wide as I just blinked at her owlishly. She looked so serious, unflinching. My hand fisted under my chin. "Sookie, if that was all you wanted. You could have said it out on the-" I pause, voice slowly trailing off. "Sookie. What are you not telling me? I thought Tara lived with you."
She was firm in her poker face. "Tara is back with her mother. Bill doesn't trust me alone." She sighs, angry at the man. "They want to have somebody else at my house. Gran would roll in her grave."
I shift again, arms crossing as I look her over. She saw my stubborn will standing strong. She reaches out to grip my upper arms, eyes hard on my own.
"I wouldn't trust anyone else with my life, Fae. You're the only one I trust enough to understand." She pauses long enough to roll her eyes toward the door. "Or get killed."
I laugh as I pull her into a crushing hug. "Sook, I love you, but you suck at smooth talking."
"Is that a yes?"
