One hand tangled in his hair, the other scrabbling for purchase, I could hardly get control of my thoughts. We'd rather ruined his bedspread a while ago. But we had stumbled upon a fun fact I'd not really noticed. I healed quickly. Or my body replenished the blood lost quickly.
Ben had his head buried in my throat, pulling from that pulse point that happened to be my 'spot' to begin with. Our hips were still connected.
Some odd tune filled the room.
"It's raining tacos, from outta the sky. Tacos. No need to ask why. Just open your mouth, and close your eyes. It's rainin' tacos!"
I groaned in annoyance. Ben pulled his head back, brow quirking at me as my hand held out. The phone shot into my hand, no care that it was the first time Ben would see my powers. I put the phone to my ear without even reading the screen.
"Faelyn!"
I wince a bit, pulling the phone away before putting it back. "Hey, Sook," I rasp, voice giving way to what I had been doing.
There was a long silence on her side before she spoke again.
"Seriously?! I hear from Lafayette at work that you went out and O.D.'d at a party? Were you not going to call me?"
"Hold on," I grumble, to the phone. I hit mute, apologetically nodding to Ben. He sighed, pulling away from me. After he was laying next to me on the bed, I put the phone back to my ear to speak again.
"Now, what's going on?"
"Wait. Were you in the middle of sex? What the hell, Fae!"
"Well, if I knew you were calling just to yell at me I wouldn't have. But you don't usually call me unless you need me for something."
I heard the smile in the breath she let out. "Fae. You act like you're our protector. Stop worrying so much for us."
"Kind of hard not to. What did you want aside from to yell at me?"
She pauses, speaking to somebody about a table making an order before coming back to me.
"They found another body. This time it was out near Jason's place, same spot as where you were attacked."
I stiffen, breathing pausing as I stare wide eyed at the ceiling.
"Jason?"
"No. He was at that new waitress' place. Came home to find it. Another female, but they're saying she wasn't killed there."
I let out the held breath, rubbing harshly at my face. It was the best I could do to keep the chaotic flashes of memory from distracting me.
"And you're listening in at the bar?"
"Trying. But apparently the girl didn't have a good name for herself in town."
"What?"
"She's just graduated school, moved in with her high school sweetheart. Into women."
I sigh, relaxing a bit as my mind was eased to know I didn't personally know the girl.
"Don't sound relieved, Fae. That girl lost her life."
"I know. I'm just a bit glad it wasn't somebody I knew. Is there anything else?"
"Jason wants you to stay away from his place for the time. He's staying at my place mostly."
"Good luck with that," I lightly cackle. My mood was lightening with the thought of trouble Jason would bring.
"Oh, and we're having an early dinner. You better be there."
"Turn down your cooking? Never. I'll be there."
"And don't dress like a slut."
I snort, sitting up with a light groan. "Yeah, yeah. Stuff it, Sook. That was one time to piss Jason off. I've still got my dress from last night."
"It's not that one you wear to the club, is it? I had meant to ask how you could wear that comfortably."
One shoulder shrugs, a habitual movement when talking to Sook. "I wear nothing under it. Simple."
Sook made a gagging noise. "You are terrible, Fae."
"Not last I checked. Just a difference in attire, Sook. You were raised by gran, I was raised in a different way."
"Oh. I meant to ask about that. Did your mom ever mention anything about your gran? Maybe your gran was like you."
"I don't know. Mom never spoke of Gran. Apparently Gran was a worse parent than my mom."
"Yeah, Gran did say your mom mostly raised herself. It was worth a try."
"Not really. It wouldn't matter in the least, Sook. Just keep listening in to see if something can be picked up. And stay the hell away from Bill's place."
"Bill? Why?"
"Sook, Bill is playing a very dangerous game right now with people that would do worse than take you. He's currently the King of the state."
"Wait. When did this happen?"
"Apparently the other day. Don't push too hard on that. He should be staying away from you for now."
"Look, we can talk about it when you come by the house. I'm almost done with my shift."
"See you then, Sook."
"Fae. I love you. Be safe."
She said it softly, with such heartfelt feeling. My eyes closed, heart swelling as I felt those words deeply.
"I love you too, Sookie."
I hung up.
Ben leaned in, breathe ghosting a line up my spine. He pulled me back into his chest, tongue flicking over the little blood that had come from his bite before it had clotted. I moaned, head tilting to the other side to allow him access.
"How long do you have?"
"A few hours at most."
I had to cheat to get to Sook's, she picked me up a distance from the motel. My hair was a damp wavy mess that actually fit well. Bites healed up with Ben's help. She didn't ask much, assuming I'd been sleeping with somebody in town.
I told her about the meeting. I told her everything they said at the meeting to me. I even told her about the man I assumed to be my birth father. I said nothing of Ben. She didn't ask much on him either.
"So, try not to freak out," she says as she pulls to a park in her drive. Jason was already there, probably in the living room.
I stepped out, smoothing the skirt down to cover my legs better. "When do I freak out, Sook?"
"Not often but you could," she says back while moving around me to head in. "Dinner should be ready."
"Wait." I stop on the steps, warily eyeing her. "Did Jason cook? If he did I'd rather just not."
She laughs, grabbing my arm and pulling me to the door. "Get in here, Fae. I cooked. I just had to run back out and get you. How the hell did you get to town anyway?"
I wiggle my fingers at her and wink, screen shutting behind me. She cuts off, whipping around to look at me. Those brows lowered, searching me over.
"Wait. Could you?"
There was no need to speak what she thought, it was easy to guess. I shrug. "Haven't tried that. But I could tell you later."
"Fae!"
Jason's loud and happy call startled me. I was swept up and whirling as Jason crushed my arms to my sides and started the play fight.
"No fair!" I cry out just before all air is flushed from my lungs as I'm driven to the ground in his shoulder plowing move.
"All's fair," he calls back happily attempting to pin me.
My heeled foot slammed into his calf.
"Shit!"
He jerked, lifting enough to get one arm free. I tangled it tight around his neck and shoved his head to the floor with a loud thump. My legs were curled with the heels points pushing into his jean clad thighs painfully.
He let out a choking sound. Then smacked the wood quickly.
Sook shot us an amused roll of her eyes as I let Jason up. He rasped in a breath, dropping like a star fish to the other side of me. I sat up with ease and grace aided by my power. Jason held a hand out, grinning happily.
"Cheat."
I wink. "Hardly. I fought fair."
On his feet, he glanced over my dress and the nice heels. "Why you dressed up?" He leaned in, sniffing toward my hair. "You smell like men's soap."
I wink at him, fluffing my hair a bit. "Busy night."
He laughs, slapping me on the back. He moved ahead of me as I put my wallet and phone on the table by the door. The door knob twisted. My attention snapped to the door. It didn't budge.
"Who is it?" I demand, voice far from welcoming.
"Fae?" Jason came at a rush from the kitchen.
I stood out of reach of the door, eyes glaring at an older man with white hair and a blue striped suit. He looked back at me, eyes narrowed only the slightest.
"Shit! Fae! Let him in!"
Jason moved to the door, hand grasping the knob and pulling. It didn't budge as my head tilted toward Jason, eyes keeping the man in sight.
"Why? I've never seen him before? Why is he just stepping into Sook's place?"
"That's our Gramps, Fae! Let go of the door!"
The door swung open with force. Jason, not ready for it to open fell back a few steps to smack into me. My hands rested on his shoulder blades, steadying before moving to the side. Sook came out, placing the last dish.
"Jason, don't get mad at Fae. Not after what she's been dealing with. She's just trying to protect us all."
I spared the man a hard look, one he returned. My eyes skimmed over eyes that looked to hold a blue to match mine. Similarities were there, but I still looked mostly like my father. Chin lifting, I turned to move toward the table by Sook. Jason put his hands to his hips, proudly smiling at the man as the door shut without either touching it.
"Thanks, Fae," Sook utters as I move to stand near her.
The men stopped in the doorway to the dining room. Jason proudly looked over Sook and I. The man looked to me, as if trying to place something.
"Well, this is all of us," Jason supplies to the man with a near chirp to his words. "Sookie, my sister. Who you've met." His hand motions to me. "This is Faelyn Lynwood. Our cousin."
The man didn't look from me, watching me as if I would attack or something. My arms crossed under my chest, quirking a brow up at him.
"Cousin?"
"My Gran was the sister to their grandpa."
He was quiet then, looking to me with expectation. Sook put a hand on my arm, smiling to the man.
"Fae can't read minds like us," she explains.
I shot a curious look to Sook then the man. "Wait a minute. He's fairy?"
She nods, happily looking to him. "Apparently he's technically our grandpa."
"Is that why you were asking about my gran?"
She shrugs. "Kind of. But I was wondering."
The man had wavy wispy hair like mine. I stepped forward, offering a smile to the man with my hand offered out.
"Sorry if I offended you. Hard time since I came back to Bon Temps."
He takes my hand, look softening a bit. "Understandable. It is good to know that somebody is attempting to keep our family safe. I am Niall."
He lets my hand go, allowing me to push some hair from my face. "Call me Fae. I'm happy to meet any family we have left."
"Well there is Hadley and Hunter."
I wince, rubbing the back of my neck as I glance to Sook.
"Maybe not. Bill killed her girlfriend. She may not have made it out."
Jason shot forward. "What?"
I put my hands up. "Hey, I don't know. She could have made it out. But she wasn't there at the meeting like they had planned."
"Meeting?" Niall's attention was focused in on that, judging me.
Sook puts an arm around my shoulders in a side hug. "Fae's been working for the head vampire for the area. Trying to get something to keep safe."
"Using a vampire?" The man didn't look believing.
I shrug, not bothered. "When you have one vampire attempting to chase you down, find a stronger one to defend you."
"And this vampire has had your blood?"
"The one after me? Or the one I'm working for?"
He said nothing but the look made it clear. "Neither. The one after me was, or I should say is, an underling of the head of my old state. Only knows of me from word of mouth and a short meeting with the vampire I'm with now."
"You are in a relationship with this one?"
I laugh, as does Sook. I elbow her lightly at the humor that brought. "Gosh, can you imagine that? Me and Eric."
Sook laughs too, shaking her head as she looks to Niall. "No. Fae wouldn't date Eric."
"Come here, child."
He motioned me to him. I spared Sook a look before moving to stand before him on the other side of the table. Jason was happily watching the episode unfold. Niall lifted a hand as if to touch my head.
"Wait!" Sook called out in alarm.
My eyes widened in realization to what he planned. I jerked a bit out of reach, warily watching his hand. He frowned at Sook.
"Fae doesn't react well to anybody attempting to read her mind."
The man looked to me, as if something new were before him. I gave a goofy and wincing grin.
"Sorry, part of my power makes it too much of a strain."
"And what power do you have?"
"She can move things," Jason all but crows happily, leaning around Grandpa Niall to gesture at me with pride. "With her mind."
And there was the idiot showing clear. I shoot Jason a haughty look, hand to my waist.
"Jason Stackhouse, don't you make me sound like some freak."
"Come on, Fae, you know I don't mean it like that."
"You can move things? Show me."
Jason let out a yell, my hand loosely motioned to him. Niall turned at the sound. Jason's hands windmilled in the air, as if to help balance. He was off the ground, slowly spinning as if in zero gravity. Sook let out a strangled sound like a snort, hand covering her mouth. Niall looked to my hand, contemplative before looking to me with a new light in those pale blues.
Jason lowers to his feet, staggering as I let him stand on his own. I wink at Niall before moving back to the other side of the table. I pulled a chair out, lowering to sit without care.
"Now. Hope yall don't mind, I'm famished and could eat a horse."
Sook sat next to me, Niall taking the head of the table with Jason facing Sook. I was already heaping a number of fried chicken on my plate and a mound of mashed potatoes with corn. Jason wasn't far behind as Niall and Sook seemed to have more grace with their meal.
Niall spared me a lot of looks as I ate three large chicken breasts and two huge scoops of the potatoes, just starting to the corn.
"You eat a great deal, Faelyn."
I shrug a shoulder. Sook smiles at her plate. Jason let out a short laugh. "You should see her drink."
I clear my mouth with the napkin, attempting to be polite. No matter that I'm eating more than was proper for normal people, I didn't want to be that rude.
"Always had a large appetite. I've a fast metabolism."
He leaned back, looking over us all.
"Perhaps now is the best time to speak."
Sook looks to Jason, something passing wordlessly between them. Niall nods his head toward me.
"I can sense the fay in you."
Sook's head snaps to look at me. "What?"
I blink at her. "What?"
"Since when? Why aren't you surprised?"
"Since Ben showed me today."
"You were with Ben? All day?"
I grin toothily, wiggling my brows at her. "Who else would I be with?"
Jason leans forwards, frowning and ready to go all protective. "Who's Ben?"
Sook looks to Niall. "Ben is another Halfling who happened to be passing through."
Niall looks to me. "And you are in a relationship with the man?"
I shrug. "I guess. Either way, he showed me I was fairy at least in some part earlier."
Sook beams. Niall sits back, seeming a bit thoughtful.
"The reason we are all here is to speak over our plans."
"Plans?" I cut off, looking to Sook for clarification.
Jason was the one to supply it. "To keep that freak Warlow from taking Sook."
"Or Faelyn," Niall amends. "As it is, the contract that one of my descendants made did not specify. Both Sookie and Faelyn carry the Fay in their blood. In terms, he could take either."
"Whoa!" I call loudly, hands up to stop all talk. "What?"
"Fae," Sook starts.
"Don't you 'Fae' me to calm me down, Sook," I snap, tone rather biting. "What the hell is with this crap?! I know who two of the groups after me are. Now I've got some unknown creep called Warlow to worry after?!"
"Fae, calm down," Niall starts in a soothing tone.
"What?!" Sook snapped around to look at me. "Two? You distinctly left something out, Faelyn!"
"Did not!" I argue back as we were both rather loud. "I told you that the Authority was attempting to get me looped into some contract-"
"I thought you meant to work for them!"
I motion at the table without meaning the table in specific. "Sook, why the hell would they want me to work for them?! They said, blood, services and procreation! When the hell was that working for somebody?!"
"Pardon?" Niall's tone was like ice as he cut off the small argument between Sook and I.
Sook turns to Niall. "Fae's been on the run from some vampire back in Missouri. She came here, used Eric, an older vampire, to have some claim. The other vampire came after her and they involved some higher ups in the vampire community. Apparently the higher ups now want her."
I hold a hand up, brows quirking as I roll my eyes to the side. "And I will gladly kill the first to even try to kidnap me. But, that's not the point. I've got them tangling with a lot of paperwork and legal drama. At least they are still aiming for a peaceful turn." I looked back to Niall. "Now. This Warlow. What do you mean?"
He easily keeps to that line, clearly agreeing that it was the more dire situation.
"Warlow is a vampire that killed my people so very long ago. He's obsessed with the fairy, specifically my line. One of my foolish descendants agreed to a contract that allowed him to take a female of the line who carries the Fay blood."
"Meaning me or Fae," Sook murmurs.
"Vampire? Let's pretend I understand what's special about fairies. What's the exact danger?"
Jason looked disturbed by the near cool and distant way I was taking this bit.
"Fae! Warlow is a vampire! He wants to take either of you!"
I shrug. "Happens to be a common trend for me of late, Jase. Learning to pick and choose here."
"Fae," Sook says with a frown.
I looked to Niall, stubborn. "Look. I'm not an idiot. It all scares me. But the point is that I have a better fighting chance than Sook. And the issue is if this Warlow is specifically after her. He may not even realize I have fairy in me."
"You would martyr yourself in the stead of Sookie?"
I shrug. "Sook's got more than enough problems. I promised them both I would look out for them when I returned. If it means going in her stead, then I will. But I wont go down without a fight."
He nods, seeming pleased. He leans forward. "As of now, I am here to help rid of this beast."
"Wait-" Jason cuts off looking to me. "Are you saying you would just let him kill you if it saved Sook? That's hardly the point, Faelyn."
"Jason," I cut, eyes narrowing in dark warning. "I've more than enough on my plate. The idea that it just may end isn't really that bleak to me at this time."
Sook cuts off anything else. "Look! Who knows what this Warlow wants. He could want to keep either of us. He could just want to kill us. There isn't a definite way to know. So it's best to view it as a bad situation."
"Until then, I will require both of you," Niall says pointedly with a firm look to Sook and I. "To stay within the house and not go out."
"Nope."
"Pardon?"
I rose to my feet, hands to my waist. "I can't just stay here. I've a shit storm to deal with. I've got a number of people who look after me outside of this house. Focus on Sook. I'll come back in the morning. But, on that note. I will have to leave to make it to a safe place before dark."
"You're leaving? Fae, we are supposed to stick together and Grandpa Niall was going to-"
I shake my head, looking down at Jason. "You all have my number. Keep tabs on me if you must. But I have to go."
Niall looks anything but pleased. "If you are not back tomorrow, we will assume the worst."
I shrug. "Best to always do that."
Sook looks up at me, confused. "How are you getting home?"
I wiggle my fingers and brows at her. "Godric taught me a new trick. Though I will need any strong alcohol you have."
She rose, not seeming to trust it. But she was going along with it. She pulled out the new bottle of whiskey, the men following to watch. I opened it and took a number of greedy pulls from the bottle, drinking far more than a quarter of it.
Shaking my head at the nasty taste, I passed it back and moved for the sink to get some water. My things came sailing into the room from the entrance, drawing Niall's eye. Breath steadied, I felt the warmth of the whiskey in my system, winking at Sook as I put the phone and wallet in my top.
"You'll message soon as you get there?"
"Yup." I slipped out the back, the group following. I paused a short distance from the house, shaking my hands out as if to amp up for something. "And I'll answer any messages you send."
"Fae," Sook says warily. "How do you plan to even make it home?"
I give a shit eating grin. "Same way I made it to the party the other night. Love you all. Nice to meet you, Grandpa Niall."
And I aimed my palms down before I was hurdling into the sky like a rocket. Sookie screamed out in alarm.
