Inuyasha waited as tension grew further up his body. It was an awkward position he was in and knowing that he was in the dark about most things was not a space he preferred. So he had come up with some bullshit story to tell Sesshomaru about security and wall defense as they walked. The children had played and built items for Kagome. By the end of it she had been covered in flowers and Shippo had collected multiple leaves he had stuffed down her shirt. The twerp had claimed they were for protection and it was only Sesshomaru's nod that had him believing any of it.
It has surprised him when Sesshomaru had begun discussing Inuyasha's running of the castle while the demon lord had been gone. While Inuyasha had left much up to the toad in terms of schedules and where people slept defense had been his primary focus. It had been strange how easily the two had conversed over this. Towards the end Inuyasha couldn't help the lip he gave Sesshomaru about the men respecting him because he didn't look like a princess.
The eye roll Sesshomaru was unable to suppress was like music to his ears, mainly because it wasn't a fist threw his gut. It was like a whole new world of ways to annoy the stoic man had just opened up to him.
Which is what lead him here, pacing. His nose twitched briefly before he smelt the smoke near him. Leaping to the side he was determined to face this head on, "Oi, that could have hit me."
Malik grimaced, "Pity, I missed. I will need to burn everything to get rid of your stench but it is best to start with the source."
Inuyasha scratched his head after patting down a few sparks that had managed to infiltrate his hair, "Still mad about that rutting comment huh?"
Malik's eyes narrowed as the two of them stood in a less demolished set of gardens near the back of the castle, "Leave half breed, I am too tired to put up with you."
Inuyasha glanced at the man who did indeed look tired. His arm was bandaged and multiple injuries were surrounding his body. Inuyasha knew that he would heal with time but even demon healing had its limits, "Listen we do not like each other but I've got some theories and you probably have some answers. Let's not draw this out."
Malik growled as he had made the decision to turn around and just call it a day. This was not worth it to him and he had put up with enough idiots these last few months to not want to partake in ridiculous conversations.
"So for starters I think you are Kagome's dad."
Malik stopped mid-step. Placing his foot back down he slowly turned towards the smirking half-demon but did not say a word. Eventually Inuyasha moved up closer, "Not her actual dad because she was orginially pretty human but her Uncle Ken, the one that also seems to hate me. See I think future you seeks out Kagome and becomes part of her life. I know that Kagome only has a few memories of her actual father and somewhere in her mind Ken is the closest thing she has no matter how little she saw him."
Malik's face remained passive, "That is a large assumption for having no other evidence than him not liking you. I am positive most feel that way in fact."
Inuyasha shook his head, "This last battle was the first time you transformed in front of me and your aura changed. You were no longer masking it. I remembered that feeling; it was the same as the necklace that lit my ass on fire a few moons ago, the one she brought from home. What is it?"
Malik sighed, "A protection spell. She would have had to be near death for it to activate."
Inuyasha and him were eye to eye now, "So future you knew that if she did not have that spell she may have died and been overcome by her symptoms."
Malik glanced around the area and motioned for Inuyasha to sit. Once the two of them were awkwardly next to each other and facing the setting sun Malik started, "She said Ken had a child, she met her. I cannot have children."
Inuyasha shook his head, "Shippo is basically hers and Rin should have been born with dog ears with how Sesshomaru treats her. Both of them are not with their original parents but have their family."
Malik shook his head again, "To fulfill the time line I would have sought her out but the affection between them that she speaks of…"
Inuyasha smirked with a knowing understanding. He had been around his friend long enough now to see how she impacted others. Malik was still new to it and did not fully comprehend how one person could become so important in such a small amount of time. Especially with ones heart being closed. Almost jovially, because he could picture it easily, Inuyasha stated "You doubt her ability to draw someone in, even as some little kid running around probably terrorizing you as she got into way to much trouble than a normal person should ever be capable of? Besides, her time is a long way off from now who knows what happens in between then."
It was clear that the annoyed part and the curious part were at war with one another inside of the stoic cat demon. Malik looked towards Inuyasha with a final determination, "Ask your question half-breed."
Inuyasha sighed as he tried to figure out how to word this. Eventually he decided on his normal tactic of blunt honesty without caring who it might hurt, "So I am pretty sure my stupid brother is in love with her."
Malik just closed his eyes, "A foolish thing if it is true."
Inuyasha went for it again, "I don't think Kagome knows yet but if it could save her…"
Malik's eyes wandered towards him again, "You wish to know about the mating process?"
Inuyasha blinked, "No yelling or threats on my life? I expected this to be way harder."
Malik remained as stoic as ever, not an ounce of the former pain displayed in his body. Mental or physical. "I imagine my description would not do you any good. She was human so the spell somehow became twisted. I could feel its malformed nature at the time but did not care, I anticipated it being different due to her human status. At the time she was devoted to me but it corroded and her soul could not take the strain. I took on much of the burden and I would not wish that on Sesshomaru, even if it means Kagome's death. It would be better to let her pass so he can grieve."
Inuyasha shook his head, "Oh no, I don't think you understand. I'm not positive but I think Kagome likes him too, like really likes him. She isn't at love yet but I think that is because she hasn't let herself. I know my friend though, when she feels something she dives totally into it. Kagome doubts herself more than anything and would never see herself being good enough in his eyes so she hasn't let her thoughts wander."
Malik's eyes narrowed, "What are you implying?"
Inuyasha's own eyes became mischievous at the further questioning, "I am just saying, and I know it is a long shot, but what if that daughter of yours that Kagome met wasn't just any daughter. What if it was herself?"
Malik frowned, "There is no way to know, the ridiculousness of your statement is near insulting as is."
Inuaysha stood, "She was young, maybe Rin's age. Human memories are horrible and at that time she would have been concentrating on other things. If Ken is you who is to say how our Kagome ends up seeing you? That maybe you get your family too?"
Inuyasha did not know it but that last statement was the wrong thing to say, no matter how true it had the potential to be.
Malik stood as well; his eyes angry. Inuyasha had seen rage before and while it was nothing new to him the level of animosity was palpable. As someone who had spent his entire life on the receiving end of other's discrimination he knew when death was close. Malik's energy screamed for far more than blood, it was ready to ravage the land for the sheer joy of forgetting. Briefly Inuyasha remembered his near mental break that Sesshomaru had knocked him out of in the woods and he had been forced to submit. The urge to kill all those innocent children had been so strong. Was this what Malik faced daily? The feeling of loss? Of betrayal? Of something he would never be able to have?
The gravelly voice echoed around him, "Do not manipulate me with false words. We have a war to fight and if you attempt this again you will be in the crosshairs."
A large fire sprouted from Malik's feet as it engulfed him. The flames rose quickly as the heat filled the area and encased the surrounding gardens. Inuyasha leaped out of the way just in time to see Malik's face disappear, his eyes being the last thing that made contact. In is dash to safety he had been surprised at that last flicker of emotion before the flame dispersed and the demon was gone.
Inuyasha saw it though and it made him all the more curious. He saw the hope in the man's hidden eyes and knew that feeling well. He had worn it after first meeting Kagome and every day since then. He had hoped that she wouldn't leave, hoped that it wasn't someone else lying to him and hoped that he could keep her alive without letting her know just how easily she could destroy him.
Inuyasha smirked as he came to the realization that he had faced his own fear and that if surrounding company was anything to go off of full blooded demons were all pansies.
Kagome tossed back and forth as she attempted to position herself for better sleep. Her walk outside had not helped her in the slightest and if it was possible her heart beat faster that entire time. After speaking with Inuyasha and his ridiculous innuendos she could not help but be frantic. It was as if her mind had refused to calm down and everything became hyper aware.
Had Sesshomaru always stood this close? Had he always permitted people around him? Did he typically engage in flower receiving from others?
She nervously wiped her sweaty palms against her clothing and could not help but feel it was incredibly uncomfortable. Nothing like the silk outer layer of Sesshomaru's clothes. Sighing dramatically she looked at both children who were staring at her in concern.
She knew they needed to sleep but her mind was still racing which was most likely affecting them. A few hours was nothing like what they each needed to heal, especially her. Throwing the covers off of them Kagome stood. "You know what Rin, forget this. Sesshomaru was gone for months and he should see you now."
Rin's eyes widened as she took in Kagome's pose of determination. Kagome then walked around a bit, "And he probably hasn't eaten and I know he needs sleep too."
Kagome turned to ask Shippo where the man was but found her senses picked him up quite easily. He was closer by than she thought, in his rooms but Malik's energy showed that he was not sleeping. They were probably discussing battle plans and defenses. Turning towards the two children she nodded once, "Grab your things."
Both children did so quickly as Rin seized her doll and Shippo stuffed the now drying leaves back into his pockets. The three of them made their way towards the designated area and once Rin realized where they were her own smile grew. Kagome walked towards the doors, only slightly less confident, as she was determined to act in the same manner she would have before this internal crisis was happening.
Pushing the door open Kagome watched as the two familiar people stood before her. Placing her hands on both of the children's head she directed them to the bed. They walked over and situated themselves under the blankets with another encouragement from Kagome. Sesshomaru raised his eyebrow, "Is something wrong?"
She looked at the three people in the room. Sometime during her quest to the room Inuyasha had joined the scene. Though for some reason Malik seemed unusually upset by Inuyasha's proximity, his unfiltered aura radiating rage.
Kagome nodded again as she tried to find her words. Glancing at the children she stated, "I am watching Rin but she misses you. Perhaps we can sleep here while the three of you work?"
Sesshomaru blinked once and then twice. He turned back towards Malik abruptly as he stated a very clear, "Do as you wish."
Kagome felt an internal pressure lessen as she knew part of her had been anticipating a rejection. The truth was Rin had been an excuse. She had missed Sesshomaru and was not sure where they stood now that they were back in the world of the living. In the underworld she had finally thought that she was understanding him. When he opened up and cared for her then defended her from Touga she had felt like she had found her place. Then Inuyasha started saying stupid things and she no longer felt comfortable enough to just ask Sesshomaru what it all meant. Was she pack? A friend? Certainly not something more.
Walking towards the bed Kagome felt her own fatigue catch up with her the moment she caught his scent on the sheets. A bit of his residual aura was there as well bit most likely from stepping near it. Neither had been in this world for some time and she doubted he had managed a quick nap.
Once she had made herself comfortable, and knowing that what she was doing was rather bold, Kagome let another reason for coming up here out. She looked at them as they scanned over a map of the area, "I doubt any of you have slept recently and in case you are tired…it's a big bed and the castle is drafty because of all the damage. Body heat is helpful."
Kagome felt her own cheeks rise in a pink hue. She turned back around and pressed the now pulled up blanket to her face. Shippo pulled himself closer to her feet as was one of his favorite spots after burrowing under the blankets. Rin was in her arms and the girls breathing had already evened out indicating she was still tired. The men remained where they were though and she knew that was likely. All were warriors at heart and while she did not currently have the confidence to tell them all to get some rest maybe they would listen to her observation. When they resumed their conversation Kagome pulled Rin tighter hoping that this war ended soon and the people she had come to care about remained safe.
Inuyasha, for his part, loved how Kagome's mouth was causing all these predicaments for someone other than him. She did not know that packs typically slept together for warmth and safety. She did not know that what she offered was another step towards courting. She did not know that she had without a doubt proven his point to Malik of the possibility of a different future.
The moment she was asleep Inuyasha turned to Sesshomaru, "The kid has missed you and you look like something Kilala would pass up. When was the last time you slept?"
Sesshomaru turned towards him and the two faced off in this new cat and mouse game they played with each other, "You were clearly not beat enough as a pup if that is how you speak to your betters."
Inuyasha crossed his arms, "Yeah, cause Kagome would love it if you beat up her favorite person."
Sesshomaru's eyes glanced towards the bed after narrowing, "Shippo is safe on the bed. He is in no danger."
Inuyasha quickly went into a fighting stance, "Sesshomaru even I could take you with how you are right now. Get some sleep and let Rin feel your aura. It will probably help Kagome too with how much time you spent together in the underworld."
The last line was a low blow and they both knew it.
Much to both of their surprise it was Malik who spoke next. He was aggravated to say the least and was obviously being triggered by this conversation. With a forced look of acknowledgement to Inuyasha and then one to Sesshomaru he growled out a quick statement, "When you both are done I will be fortifying the castle."
The man removed his claws from the table and rolled up the map. Once he finished he stepped outside and shut the door as if he was not about to strangle both of them, but the fury came from him in waves meaning no one was fooled. Before either could comment Inuyasha turned back towards the older brother he was still accepting, "Listen Sesshomaru, she needs rest and you need to know she is safe. I will keep watch and you can be all coward like and wake before she does."
Sesshomaru's eyes narrowed, "I am not a coward."
Inuyasha huffed as he bypassed the comment, "Oh no, I came to the realization earlier that all full demons are cowards when it comes to anything important. Killing a bunch of people and you are fine but facing your actual fears and humans have you beaten. Just lay down and get some sleep, the pack will be looked after and you will be better prepared to head into battle."
It was clear that Sesshomaru was not sure which aspect of that statement to comment on. The coward piece or the continued insistence for Sesshomaru to rest with the others. Eventually he picked a less threatening topic of the two. Sesshomaru looked at the now sleeping three, "I will not sleep in the same bed."
Inuyasha growled, "And have her find out that she kicked you out of your own bed? Either way that is you losing and her upset."
Sesshomaru looked back at the sleeping group. He knew he was tired as well as only half listening to what Malik had been stating. When he felt her energy start moving around the castle he had instinctively latched on. Furthermore he was no coward and would not run from this, whatever this was. "On the other side, with Rin in the middle and Shippo by her legs. You will wake me in three hours."
"That's it, just go lay down next to the love of your life and make sure the children are there so you are not groping my best friend," he said casually.
Sesshomaru nearly walked out of the room with that statements but Inuyasha stepped in front of him. "Kidding, I would kill you if you touched her in her sleep."
Inuyasha nodded once again as he glanced at the door, "Agreed for what you said earlier though." Making one last glance at Sesshomaru Inuyasha quickly walked out the door. When he shut it quietly he motioned to the figure standing by the door that the roof was a better standpoint. Once they both made it to their respective locations he looked straight at Malik, "Am I still crazy?"
Malik scowled, "You are inviting death and heartbreak."
"She wanted to be there, with him," he countered. "And he gave in…Sesshomaru conceded like it was something normal in his behavior."
Malik stood stoic now that the sun had set and the night was running rampant, "Your theory is ludicrous."
Inuyasha knew he had him with the next statement, "Maybe, but in case you missed it she invited you to sleep there too. Sounds an awful like pack life to me, I would almost say she is feeling something familiar about you."
There was no flare in Malik's energy but the small glimmer in his eye was enough to let Inuyasha know he had gained headway. Eventually Malik spoke though not nearly as roughly as before, "And what is your plan now?"
Sesshomaru cautiously walked over to the bed as he looked at the slumbering group. Kneeling, his claws graced the blankets and he found himself nearly stepping out of the room to get away from the situation. How had he even ended up here? First it was Inuyasha catching him distracted enough that the boy managed a full body tackle and now he was willing to sleep in the midst of a crisis. All for the hope of being next to her?
Pushing himself onto the bed he remained routed on top of the covers. Brushing his claws over Rin's hair he was pleased to find her normal scent over her and not the stench of before. Kagome had done well with the pups and he could not be more grateful. Eventually he saw a familiar figure worm their way up to the covers, the green eyes staring at him. "Speak your mind fox, you have protected her well this far."
Sesshomaru knew that the pup had woken the moment the conversation turned towards his mother. The foxling reminded him briefly of that first night they spent together discussing Inuyasha as Sesshomaru contemplated Kagome on the roof. He remembered vividly how the fox had bit him only for Sesshomaru to offer to train him the following evening.
Loyalty, wits and courage was something to be rewarded. At the time that was what he had told himself but upon further review it may have also been something to bring him closer to Kagome.
Shippo gracefully stood on the bed and climbed over the sleeping humans. Once he was near enough to Sesshomaru he quietly settled himself on the sheets, careful not to wake anyone. "Her heart beats faster when you are close."
Sesshomaru closed his eyes as the boy worked out his observations out loud, something that Sesshomaru had taught him a few months ago. While it would not be helpful in an actual crisis it would permit the youngling to learn how to work through his problems strategically and take in all the necessary information.
"She is happier when you are near, Inuyasha isn't as much of an idiot and you are never far from her." Shippo glanced at the demon and crossed his arms, "You protected her when I could not."
This time Sesshomaru saw the tears welling in Shippo's eyes. Sesshomaru knew it was in a demon's nature to fight, protect and prove themselves. When Kagome re-emerged he must have felt so confused about where she was and what he could have done better. Despite Inuyasha's former role in the pack Shippo still protected her and saw her as his greatest light. His fear was understandable and in also wanting to know what to do from this point forward. Placing a hand on top of the boy's head he stated calmly, "Your alpha kept her safe; I have no intention of letting her be hurt. You did well in our absence."
Shippo's eyes watered more at the admission, but this time a sob of relief nearly broke from the fox's lips. Much to Sesshomaru's surprise the small demon moved again and pushed himself up into Sesshomaru's collar, rubbing his cheek against the demon. Once their scent's had intermingled Sesshomaru placed his hand again upon the boy. Moving him slightly away Sesshomaru made direct eye contact, "You are a valued member of my pack. Your protection of Rin does not go unnoticed and you proved your worth as a guardian multiple times over."
The boy nodded again as Sesshomaru spoke the words he had always longed to hear from his own father. Sesshomaru felt the resolve settle in him to raise this boy properly, to truly take him as his own. To be something that both had desperately missed even if neither spoke of it outloud.
Shippo tried to scurry back towards the foot of the bed and Sesshomaru lifted him by his collar, recognizing the movement for what it was. Pack dynamics dictated that the most important members of the pack remained in the middle with the most warmth and protection. Pulling Shippo towards his chest, and in-between him and Rin, Sesshomaru moved a comforting hand to rest on top of Shippo, indicating that this was his place now. Another small hiccup escaped the boy as the meaning hit him. As much as Kagome was his mother Shippo was still an animal driven by instincts and these baser needs of understanding were being met. After a few more minutes the small boy settled and allowed himself to sleep.
When Sesshomaru heard the heartbeat slow to the correct pace he finally permitted a deep breath of air. Glance to the other side he saw Kagome again and felt that despite him knowing mating was not an option he wished it was a possibility. He wished that this moment could be real for far longer than a couple of hours.
Without knowing it Sesshomaru's heart had called out to her and she responded. Her arms lazily drew forward as they pulled Rin closer, the tips of her fingers resting on Sesshomaru's hand that was still covering Shippo.
Sesshomaru glanced down as he permitted sleep to overtake him, knowing that Inuyasha would protect the keep while he rested.
Rin woke to the most wonderful feeling she had experienced in ages, it was a sense of protection and comfort. When her body finally adjusted to being awake her eyes flittered open to see herself surrounded by some of her most favorite people. She had experienced very little in the ways of parents as both of hers had died of fever when she was young. Since she had survived the village had labeled her as a demon, as an outcast. Afterwards the wolves had come, resulting in her second life with Sesshomaru. But she did remember this feeling, of just being happy.
When she heard a door crack open Rin's eyes glanced towards the door to see Inuyasha enter the room. Glancing at her lord Rin was surprised to see that he had not moved as if deep in sleep. She had never seen him sleep before as he was always awake when she would go to bed and when she would wake up.
"Oi!" yelled the familiar voice.
Rin watched as Sesshomaru's eyes snapped open, clear irritation flashing across them as he turned to his brother. "Quiet fool, you will wake them."
Inuyasha rolled his eyes as he took in the scene, "The brat is awake and Shippo…are those tears I am smelling?" Said half-demon's eyebrow rose questioningly as Sesshomaru ignored the comment. Inuyasha had his noise lifted into the air as if a bloodhound as it twitched back and forth.
Turning towards his ward Sesshomaru glanced to Rin, "Did you rest?"
Rin felt her own cheeks flush as she recalled how well she slept but just nodded her head.
Inuyasha placed his hands behind his head and smirked, "That's good cause when Sesshomaru mates Kagome I imagine these sleepovers will happen a lot more."
A whip crossed Inuyasha's face as he was immediately attacked. When Inuyasha had righted himself and rubbed the now bleeding cut on his cheek, the one that had a bit of acid dripping from it, he turned to his brother with a smirk. "What the fuck? I watched my language." He stated while completely ignoring the fact that his response had not been so tactful.
Sesshomaru rose from the bed but they both knew the damage had been done and it had been done on purpose. He turned to see Rin, all in an attempt to quell what Inuyasha so foolishly instigated, nearly turning pink throughout her body as sheer delight radiated off of her. Her excitement was under no way being contained as she almost bounced from the bed in joy, tripping over herself in the process. Grabbing her doll she looked back and forth between the two brothers happily. With a nod she came to a clear decision and bolted out the door.
Sesshomaru did not even pretend to hold back his growl, "What was that?"
Inuyasha looked at the sleeping woman who had yet to stir, "Oh I have decided you are no longer allowed to be an avoidant fucker so in true little brother fashion I am purposefully making your life miserable until you soldier up."
Before Sesshomaru could respond Rin came tumbling back into the room with her arms full of toys and flowers. Throwing them on the floor by Kagome she ran out the room again in what Sesshomaru could only presume was to get more things. Rubbing his head he blamed her tutors. They must have told her that demon custom offered wealth and favor to the important pack members. He also did not doubt that this was Rin also trying to show gratitude. But really he blamed Inuyasha for purposefully putting the idea of Kagome and Sesshomaru mating into her head.
He looked at his brother, "Your role as beta is to not cause me additional problems."
Inuyasha shook his head, "Whatever, fact is that we have a solution to help Kagome and I am not letting this go. If I have to recruit a few more people then I will. The moment I get any alone time with her to I am totally telling her everything no matter how you try and threaten me."
Sesshomaru rubbed his temples, "I cannot tell you the number of times I have regretted the decision to save you from yourself."
Before anything else could be said Rin rushed in again but this time her hands were full of freshly picked flowers, ones they could only assume she found nearby in one of Kagome's many flower bins the servants were re-filling. Running up to Kagome Rin nearly jumped on the bed and began weaving them into Kagome's hair as she had been taught. With all of the jostling Shippo finally emerged awake and sleepily looked around. When his eyes lazy matched Rin he tried to comprehend what was happening, "Why are you making offerings to momma?"
Rin excitedly turned towards her new friend, "Lord Sesshomaru is going to mate Lady Kagome! I am making sure she knows how welcome she is and how much I love her."
Shippo's eyes widened to saucers as his head snapped to Sesshomaru and Inuyasha. Then he finally turned back towards Rin once he realized how different their expressions were. "Like mate, mate? Or like make foxlings together?"
Inuyasha immediately started laughing as the room burst into chaos. Sesshomaru realized how quickly the conversation had spiraled as not only was he going to have to set Rin right but also stop the fox from having the rutting conversation with his ward. Grabbing both children by the back of their shirt he began correcting Inuyasha's mayhem. Bringing Shippo up close he stated a very clear, "You will spend the day cleaning what is left of the training grounds" and then he turned to Rin, "and you will go to your lessons and never ask about mating again."
Both children looked at him in question as he saw a flicker of defiance in the fox. He couldn't blame him as it was not only his nature but Shippo had far more understanding of what Inuyasha had implied. Placing both down he made a very clear gesture for them to leave the room to complete their assigned tasks. Once they were gone Inuyasha scoffed, "Lessons? When we are fighting a war?"
Sesshomaru turned towards his brother, "It keeps her safe and out of trouble. And it will keep her far away from you."
Inuyasha waved the statement away dismissively, "Sure."
Turning back towards Kagome Sesshomaru saw as various toys and clothing items were scattered around her. A pile rested by her hip and he knew they would most likely confuse the woman more than anything. If one thing had been made clear to him in the underworld it was how different their species were. As much as he loathed to admit it Inuyasha was his greatest insight into Kagome at time. His half human nature permitted him to see things that his intsticts brushed aside. "Have you developed the defenses?"
The switch was almost immediate as Inuyasha went into beta mode. "Yes the castle has the precautions you and Malik had discussed, though we added a few more as the left keep had more damage than others. The injured have been given the most secure wing and Miroku has woken, though only for brief moments of time."
Sesshomaru moved back towards what was left of their notes from a few hours ago, "And the death toll?"
Inuyasha nodded, "Small, most individuals were injured and are being treated. Jinenji has saved a lot of lives and now that we had time to do the full headcount it is far better than anyone thought. Most cannot fight though. Once Shiori is rested she has also agreed to help with maintaining a barrier around the perimeter. We have also recalled Kouga and he will most likely make it to the castle by sun up."
"Will the slayer be able to fight?" he asked as he assessed their remaining resources.
Inuyasha looked down, "Her main weapon was broken but she will manage, I am more worried that she will do something reckless in a fight. Her brother had a shard in his back, one which Kagura removed in front of her and then was sent through the mirror by Kanna undoubtedly to Naraku. She buried the body while Miroku slept."
Sesshomaru closed his eyes. His energy naturally called for Kagome's calming presence, much as it had before sleeping. The warmth on his hand was near tangible as he recalled the instinctive way she had been there. Her own aura meshing with his in a similar fashion as to when they had taken the barrier down. "You will need to stop this mating argument and focus on the present Inuyasha. Kagome will not be placed in unnecessary danger."
A large sigh escaped his brother and eventually Sesshomaru turned to look at him. After a few more seconds the younger sibling spoke, but much to Sesshomaru's surprise the man did not comment on Kagome. "It's not just her; whatever this family thing is I am not losing it. I won't lose you both."
Then he left, an even pace with nothing but determination in his stance.
That comment has Sesshomaru re-evaluating his bother. They had never gotten along or been able to stand one another. They had grown up with such different principals with resentment stemming from each one of them. It was true though, their relationship had shifted greatly. While he would not identify them as friends they were…brothers. Inuyasha had demonstrated a different side of himself and it was something Sesshomaru had learned to rely on. His energy flared as he understood a secondary motivation of Inuyasha's. He did not want Sesshomaru to go back to ignoring him and hatred clouding every interaction.
He had brought up a point that Sesshomaru had more than considered. What would happen if one of them were to fall in this fight? Naraku was powerful with all of his body adjustments and the idea that Kagome would have to function on her own without their protection warranted attention. It was inconceivable that she would die and he refused to give it more thought.
His eyes moved to Kagome as he heard her heartbeat quicken as she woke. Briefly he realized his energy had indeed been pulsing with his thoughts, undoubtedly waking her when the loud room had not. When her eyes flicked open she moved just enough to cause a small pile of items to topple to the ground. Looking to her side in confusion Sesshomaru shook his head, "Rin was very appreciative of you earlier."
It was the easiest way to explain what had happened without any awkward conversations. Whatever one Inuyasha was going to give her would undoubtedly be far worse.
Kagome blushed as she realized the children were not present. Only when she ran her fingers through her hair did she realize the flowers that adorned it. Pulling one away and smiling Kagome found her voice, "You have a very sweet daughter."
His immediate instinct was to correct her language, that ward was the appropriate term, but he stopped himself. With a small half smile he responded, "It is not a trait she inherited from me."
The acknowledgement of their role in one another's life felt as if a weight had been lifted from him, a weight he had thought would get heavier with the admission. And of course, in true Kagome fashion she just smiled. She glanced around again and asked where they were.
Sesshomaru moved closer before speaking as to ease any discomfort she might feel in being alone in a room with him. "I set them to work seeing as Inuyasha was who would be watching them otherwise. He is not an adequate influence on them."
Kagome scoffed, "Why? Because he is a kid himself and will probably get them in way more trouble than they would ever find on their own?"
She pushed the covers off and immediately found herself standing as if prepared for the day. Sesshomaru had nearly lunged for her but stopped when he saw her starting to pick up the toys. Wrapping one of the kimonos around her arm he watched as she participated in domestic work. Eventually, once the assessment that her ankle was no longer injured on a near miraculous level was complete, he looked at her skin. It still had injuries but all bruises had dispersed. Had her body healed her? It could only be her powers and she had not even realized it. Logically he knew that the only difference in her sleep pattern this time had been him but he would not count that as the reason. She was not reacting to him any differently.
Still, he needed to determine something further.
Walking up to Kagome Sesshomaru reached out his hand almost gently. Kagome looked at him questioningly while placing the items on the table. Without a word she took it and stepped closer to him. When they were less than half a swords length apart he stated very calmly, "Do you trust me?"
Kagome's eyebrow rose questioningly before responding, "Yes."
Then he did something that he rarely permitted himself to indulge in. He was spontaneous. Wrapping his energy around them Kagome was suddenly in his grasp as he transported them to another area. His energy turned into a bright light as he focused on her safety, still not sure how another would do in his sphere. He had never taken another as most items would burn up in the process, let alone another creature. He felt that his energy would protect her though, and she stated she trusted him so hers flaring instinctively was far less worrisome. When his foot landed on solid ground and he still felt her in his arms just as solid as before Sesshomaru knew he had been right. Then he glanced at the dark castle before them.
Kagome's eyes adjusted as he walked over to a broken batch of wood and lit it with a small amount of demonic energy. It had taken an absolute amount of control as fire was not his element but served him well none the less. It was a control he would have appreciated in the underworld but that time had already passed. He reached for her again and Sesshomaru watched as the woman willingly took his arm. She asked no questions and for that he was glad, for as of yet he was unsure what to say. It was clear that this was not his castle but he moved around it proficiently. When they reached the outside area Kagome's gasp was near silent, though nearly stopped his heart in his chest.
Before them was the night sky, the stars luminescent and closer than ever. The moon was a crescent much like the one adoring his forehead as it glowed majestically before them. She walked closer as if to touch it but stopped herself when she saw the mountains nearby, the ones below them. Turning back realization dawned on her that this castle was floating in the sky.
Standing still Sesshomaru finally found his words, "Before my mother died this was hers. I still come here from time to time when I need to configure my thoughts in peace."
Kagome stepped back towards him as she tried to wrap her head around what Sesshomaru was showing her, "What happened to her?"
Sesshomaru looked at the moon as he felt his mask nearly fall into place. Instead he tried to focus on the facts as it had always been difficult to hide from himself when in the building. "She challenged me for the title of the west after Touga passed. She was killed in single combat by me when she refused to rescind her challenge."
Kagome's hand went to her mouth. Eventually she stepped directly in front of him and something akin to a haze crossed her eyes. What she saw could be described as nothing less than a vision. A small silver haired child covered in blood and wounds as a similar looking woman advanced on him with killing intent. She watched as a last effort he had tried to determine why she was attacking, about that which made his title so important to everyone. The resolve to keep it if only to prove his worth. Of how it felt to strike his own mother down because of her selfishness.
Her eyes watered as she latched on to his hand, unsure if he would want any further comfort from her. "I-I cannot imagine what you must have gone through."
Sesshomaru's eyes remained steady on her own gaze, "I do not trust others, it is what has kept me alive. Yet here you are standing in defiance of everything I believe and with more protection from those that love you than I could ever amass."
Kagome felt herself blush at the acknowledgement as well as vulnerability. "Yet, you brought me here."
Sesshomaru's eyes remained firm, "Yes…that I did."
Keeping the contact Kagome asked the question she had been wondering from some time now. It encompassed so much confusion and want in her mind that such a small word felt like it could not do her confusion justice, "Why?"
"Because in the end my way did not get me what I wanted," he countered.
She turned away after a few more minutes as her heart could not take the intensity it had been beating at. The racing thought of 'and what is it you want?' continued to remain on the tip of her tongue. Recalling Inuyasha's words while providing herself the distance needed, Kagome sat down on the cold bench and realized some spell must be protecting them from the wind. When her heart calmed down Kagome continued the conversation, "And when did you learn to be so sweet?"
Sesshomaru scoffed in what she could only describe as a very Inuyasha like manner. It was not refined or silent, in fact she would have guessed he was purposefully being loud had she not known him better, "I owe a great debt to you, for reasons I cannot begin to name. The underworld was enlightening and I thought to share this experience with you as well. Tactical and possessive are more appropriate terms that sweet."
Kagome felt herself flutter at his dismissal of his gesture. Gathering her courage Kagome was quick to correct him. "I don't know, you take care of me, protect me, introduced me to your father and then take me to a secret moonlight get away. I would say you are pretty sweet, if I did not know you better and we were in my time I would say we were dating."
The word was foreign to him and it was apparent on his features. Schooling her own thoughts together Kagome worked hard to find an appropriate translation, "Courting." The blush was back after she said that and he could feel that this conversation was uncomfortable for her. He wondered if it was because of her concern about his reaction to the insinuation or because of her own distaste for the idea.
Eventually he sat down next to her on the bench, "And what does this courting method entail in your time?"
She narrowed her eyes briefly, "I don't really know. I have traveled back and forth between the times so frequently that I am probably the worst person to answer. My friends talk about it like group dates and such but it seems so fake."
Sesshomaru paid keen attention to her description and where she struggled with this concept. Turning back towards the moon he shared his own insight, "I know little of the topic but I imagine the end goal would be to find someone you trust above all others. Someone that you would never want to let go and cherish more than anything."
He turned to her again, "Thank you for coming to find me. I never said that to you back in the underworld and I should have."
Kagome drew her knees up to her chest as he listened to her heart rate pick up, "How would you do it? Show someone that you cared? That you loved them? I know Inuyasha would probably be an ass about it and at the same time give them more food than they could ever eat but he doesn't count. He is a moron when it comes to most things involving other people."
Sesshomaru briefly recalled his own interactions with the priestess before him, "I imagine it would be very confusing for me. I would probably fight my instincts to be near them and then push them away. I am a broken man and what I touch does not last long."
He watched as Kagome's ire rose but his confusion remained internal, "That is not true. I am still here, Rin is still here. Inuyasha is still mostly here and at some point you stated each one of us was something you wanted to protect."
He actually laughed at the mostly comment regarding Inuyasha. Pieces of that half-demon could probably be found across all of Japan, "Yes, the hole in his stomach healed quickly. I was disappointed at the time."
Her own frustration died as she saw the mirth on his face. Eyes softening she turned back towards the moon, "Of course you were, it's like you two got joy from beating each other up since day one."
Flicking his nails Sesshomaru smirked, "It is adequate exercise."
Rolling her eyes Kagome once again concentrated on the bright lights around her. "But really, how would a demoness know that the great and powerful Lord Sesshomaru of the West was interested in her? Or him?" She flashed a teasing smile with the last one.
Sesshomaru's eyes narrowed, "You think I am attracted to males?"
Kagome shrugged her shoulders as if to ease the tension, "I mean you do have really well-groomed hair."
Sesshomaru could have puffed himself out like a peacock but decided that would only prove her point. "I assure you only a female could stir this Sesshomaru. She would be pleased with me in all manners: as a ruler, father, lover and if she would have it…a mate."
Kagome glanced again, "Because you would say so?"
Sesshomaru's eyes relaxed as he noticed that the conversation had turned internal, her own thoughts pulling her away. In an attempt to re-gather her focus he was more than truthful with his answers. "If I were to pursue a mate I would make sure that I was the best because she would deserve the best. I would never permit anything else from myself."
Kagome continued to stare out at the moon.
Sesshomaru closed his eyes as he tried to think of a way to re-engage her. "To answer your question though I imagine I would be silent in my affection unless I was sure where she stood. I would protect her above all others and consider my own life forfeit without her. I have no doubt she would drive me mad with anger at times but perhaps that is healthy as a leader there are always new things for me to learn."
He watched as her gaze travelled back to him, her head now resting on her curled up knees. "Is that how demon's do it then? That is how they court? Silently and hoping the other person notices?"
Seeing that he had her attention again Sesshomaru shook his head as he briefly wondered why she was so adamant about this topic, "No, most are clear in their intentions. They will attempt to shower with gifts, food and severed heads of enemies."
Kagome's nose bunched up as she pictured that in her mind, "So like when my cat brings me dead things?"
He had no response for that but tried not to feel offended at being compared to her family livestock.
She suddenly laid her own body up against him, them now being side to side as he felt her mind wander once again. "I think I would want someone to be honest and clear but without all the other things you said. I would want them to understand that I make really impulsive choices and half the time I just need someone to be there for me. For a whole minute there I thought it could be Inuyasha but that passed quickly. I think I have seen him pick his toes to frequently to ever consider him attractive…is that a thing for demons? Does physical attraction play a part in it all?"
Sesshomaru's body was once again keenly aware of how she was touching his arm while leaning against him but his eyes were focus on her head. She was not looking at him but still at the moon and he nearly lost his breath when attempting to answer, "Yes, it plays a very large role."
"So it isn't all bloodlines and purity?" she said while still looking out.
This conversation was impacting him in ways he could not say. Back in the underworld when they had touched it had usually been for survival or him in a fit of rage. This was different and his body knew it. The uncomfortable warmth was spreading and thoughts he had been suppressing all day were in the forefront of his mind. "Beauty is breed in at times but when it comes to desire a demon has a very difficult time controlling their wants. We are instinctual by nature and it is challenging to ignore raw attraction."
Kagome giggled, "So what do demons look for?" she laughed briefly and then pulled herself up to look at him. The intensity in his eyes must have shocked her for she pushed herself back, "I am sorry, these are personal questions."
He desperately tried to curb his gaze but with the moonlight behind her and her energy swirling it was near disastrous for him. Remaining firm he heard her heartbeat pick up as well which made him answer, "Each is different much as I assume humans to be. Inuyasha has a preference for stability and gracefulness. It most likely speaks to the childhood he had wished for. I have yet to find the words to describe what I find attractive. I can say that there are mental traits I have only recently admitted as attractive but physically, I think the eyes would be something I could not ignore."
She looked up at him blinking, "You want them like yours, golden?"
He nearly growled, "Never; mine are hardened with years of hate. I would need hers to be trusting, loving and safe. Eyes filled with beauty that I could not describe, depth that would overcome the greatest oceans. I would see it in her every time I looked in those beautiful eyes. of hers."
Kagome blushed even in this light and pushed herself up. he was better than most romance novels in the way he conveyed what he felt. She blamed it on his voice. It was probably the most attractive and seductive things in this era. Or you know, any era. "Is this strange? Us being here? Talking about this?"
That snapped Sesshomaru out of his daze as he was internally trying to catalogue all that he found attractive about the woman. He felt her unease and knew he had most likely revealed to much. He had become lost in her gaze as every quality he imagined lead back to her. He was attracted to her in so many ways and upon initially meeting her he had been disgusted with himself. Now he wished he had spent more time looking at her beauty. Her touch on his body was still warm; the image of her exposed thigh graced him in a near wicked thought. Pushing it aside and thinking of everything unattractive he managed to cool his responses down. Perhaps it had been a mistake bringing her here but he had wanted to, he had wanted her to himself for just a moment longer. "No, I think you have come to know me better than most. It is only appropriate that you know what I would desire in another. As for the castle I am gifting it to you; I thought it best you saw it."
Kagome blinked rapidly as her mouth dropped. She pushed away very slowly as they made eye contact, "What?"
It had been another impulsive thing but he wanted to provide for her and if he were to die in the battle with Naraku he did not want her tied to a new ruler who might take advantage of her. If she survived this Kagome would have a place to live her life. Or at least what remained of it. "The castle is yours to do with as you please. I would want you to stay in my home but knowing your adventures I wanted to be sure you were taken care of in my absence."
Kagome blinked again, "Are you going somewhere?"
He stood up, "Should I die in battle I want to know you are well cared for. The servants would undoubtedly follow you."
Her anger grew, "I think we both know I will be the one not surviving this next battle Sesshomaru, do not belittle me like this with false gestures."
He looked her in the eye directly, "You will survive Kagome, you will survive no matter what because you are too precious for the world to let die. I will not permit it."
She stood up on the bench making her above his eye level as if being spoken down to, "And somehow my life is more valuable than yours?"
"Yes, it is," he growled back.
Her body went slack again as he gave her a very different response than what she had been expecting, "You are a demon; I am a little human that will die anyways. My life should not even be considered in the grand scheme of things. Naraku has to be stopped and you will not prevent me from doing everything I can to help even if it gets me killed."
"I would never stop you from helping in this battle," he countered. "I know you and you will not ever permit others to be hurt when you can intervene. I will make sure that you survive your own bleeding heart though. If that costs me my own I will hold no regret."
She huffed angrily and her face turned a sheet of red as she continued to face off with the demon lord, "And I will never let you sacrifice yourself in some stupid sacrificial way."
He huffed, "Settled then."
She crossed her arms, "Neither one of us will let the other die."
It took a total of ten seconds for Kagome to burst out laughing. After a few more moments Kagome turned to him, "Did we just fight over who is not allowed to die?"
His own anger receded as he too caught up with their argument. It seemed they had indeed been fighting over the other not being permitted to die, "You do tend to argue with me needlessly."
Huffing in annoyance Kagome glanced around at the castle, "It is sweet of you to give me something so personal, I will be sure to come here when I am annoyed with you in the future."
He offered his hand to her as she stepped from the bench down to the ground. Once she was steady on her feet Sesshomaru found himself leaning down to her eye level. When he was an appropriate distance where he could see her blush forming once again he stated a very soft, "Tactical and possessive, the term is tactical and possessive not sweet."
She immediately connected the reference to their earlier disagreement as well. Shaking her head in a more light hearted manner than she had felt in ages Kagome let lose the small smile gracing her lips. Sesshomaru wondered if she was questioning this new openness. The underworld had showed him how much he had missed, the feelings he had been ignoring and fearful of. It was not entirely wrong when Inuyasha had called him a coward. He would rather face hordes of demons than face what was raging inside of him. So he would continue to be one, he would be a coward because the idea of losing her was far more painful than he thought possible. It was as if a damn had opened when they returned and no matter how he patched it the damage had been done. So he would protect her from the sidelines under the guise of their new friendship and make sure the woman lived.
"One day you are going to have to tell me how I became important here. I was just your brother's shard detector for years. One who had a skill at surviving your poison and manhandling swords out of graves. When did we become friends? I think I missed it somewhere."
He could not pinpoint it either. The way she had defied him, the way she had become invaluable to his keep, his daughter. It had happened so seamlessly that his underlying thoughts towards her had continued to grow. Kagome had a unique ability to be at exactly the wrong place at the right time.
In his mental haze he barely registered that he spoke out loud, "When I finally looked in your eyes, that is when it happened. I could not ignore it anymore."
Firevixen73 – I love it! Told you we would see some real shipping going on. Talk about an accidental confession. And I only thought it fair that now with Touga gone someone has to play matchmaker. Who better than an annoying little brother and best friend? He doesn't have much time though what with Naraku waiting around the corner for them. Leave your thoughts as I love reading them! Thank you so much for the inspiration.
