And at that very second, Adrian hated Mom's lying ass.

Blowing through the stop sign at the end of the street, he took the corner too fast. Fishtailing, he barely avoided a parked car, as he jerked the steering wheel at the last possible instant to avoid impact.

"Get control. Dumbass, you're going to wreck Blue and be walking." He slammed his hand against the steering wheel repeatedly.

But, it wasn't enough.

He slapped his stomach right on his fresh bandage, crying out in pain.

A pain junkie, he needed the relief cutting gave him.

Normally, he'd have another session before pushing carts at work, and it'd help settle him.

He imaged getting the razor out and scoring his flesh. It sucked that he'd promised Ms. Anna he wouldn't cut.

Damn, why had he promised?

So stupid.

Cutting would help him numb down, relieve the stress of Mom's lies and of finding out about Walker Starker.

Using his knee to steer, he popped the rubber band on his wrist and whimpered. It hurt, not enough, not like cutting, but enough to get his attention as he popped it again and again.

His brain processed.

Mom had lied to him about his dad. Ned, Walker, Walker Starker was his dad.

Ned Walker's my dad. My dad?

NO! It can't be true?

His thoughts circled.

He laughed wildly., "My dad's my probation officer. The team's probation officer."

And then he stopped laughing.

The world would never let him live his dad down.

Hardly the popular guy, the guys, shit, the entire school would have a field day with this one.

On, yeah, they'd all laugh and tease and fuck with him.

And everyone would laugh at him.

Never a girl magnet, now with Fucking Walker being his father, almost a damn cop, and a true hard ass, he wouldn't have a chance.

Well, he'd just have to deal.

The man probably wasn't into starting a relationship with him so maybe this would be okay. He'd never had a father and who said Walker would want to be a father.

Yeah, he didn't need a father, especially Ned Fucking Walker.

No, instead, he needed booze, some pills and some good weed. He needed to check out and stop thinking.

What a bitch he had to go to work when he truly needed to find numb.

Yeah, he wanted numb.

Desperately.

But if he was a no call no show, he'd point out, and he'd lose his job and his phone, since he wouldn't be able to afford minutes and gas and those other necessities like drugs and smoke.

Not paying attention, too into his head, he turned onto the bypass.

Someone blew the horn at him. He flipped them off and pushed the accelerator harder, blowing past them and several others.

The traffic busy, he noted he was only five minutes late.

His phone dinged, and he knew better but he picked up. He'd seen the videos. He'd heard the warnings. He honestly knew better than to text and drive but he looked, anyway.

Jerad's name lit the screen.

Awesome, his connection.

Texting and driving a for sure no, no but he didn't care.

He did it anyway.

Teachers called it distracted driving.

He'd watched YouTube videos about it in class. The teachers had warned all of them about it, but he'd be fast.

He'd had a lot of practice texting.

So, it was no big deal as he texted his dealer.

His eyes only left the road a few seconds as his thumbs flew. "Call me. I need liquid, vapor and cotton."

Jerking his eyes from his phone, his eyes were back on the road in a few seconds.

But traffic had come to a dead stop in front of him.

His heart leapt into his throat, choking him.

The one stop light on the bypass now a solid red.

"Shit." He dropped his phone into the seat beside him.

Two lanes of traffic surged forward blocking his path.

He slammed his brakes.

His brakes screamed, locking, his beloved Blue skidded toward traffic.

"NO! Shit, shit. NO!"

Going too fast, no way to stop, he heard his Gram in his head, "If you go into a skid, get off your brakes. Drive in the direction of the skid as long as you can then try to get control. Don't jerk the wheel or you'll flip."

He let go of the brake, just like Gram taught him.

But he still skidded. And Blue still flew too fast, skidding out of control, headed straight for the green minivan stopped in front of him.

The sign "Baby on Board" on the tailgate caught his eyes.

Small heads bobbed in the back seat.

Someone sat at the wheel unaware he was about to hit them hard, about to slide straight into them.

"NO!"

His eyes swept moving traffic hoping he could go around, avoid wrecking.

A man drove a four door. More kids in the back seat.

Wall to wall traffic and nowhere to go.

A sports car with a man in a suit.

A woman talking on the phone.

At the last possible second, he jerked the steering wheel hard, shooting for the open space between the road and the open sand, away from the traffic, away from the green minivan, away from the people.

Screaming, he fought the wheel as his jeep left the road, skidding.

SHIT, he thought, helpless now, riding the ride out.

Out of control, his jeep flew sideways through a road sign, then through another with a sharp twang.

Shearing the signs off, time slowed, as his top heavy jeep, Blue, left the ground, and he became weightless as his jeep found lift, and he became upside down.

He screamed, his stomach plunging, as the jeep slammed upside down into the sand, breaking the windshield, spider webbing it, as the jeep's air bag exploded, punching him solidly in the face.

Pain exploded as the airbag's punch busted his lip and his world moved in slow motion.

His heavy book bag flew past him as his chest crashed into the steering wheel, knocking the air from his lungs. Empty soda bottles and cigarette packs hit him as everything in the jeep shifted and became airborne.

The air bag already deflating in front of him, and the airbag barely slowed the impact as he crashed chest first into the steering wheel.

And the jeep kept rolling.

His book bag returned on the next flip and collided solidly into his head, and he lost hold of the steering wheel.

Free falling now, screaming, he rode the ride as Blue flipped out of control, screaming, metal twisting and roaring in his ears.

Banging and crashing, he existed as he smashed the back of his head into the passenger window.

His book bag banged solidly into him, knocking the air from his lungs on the third pass.

The dash flew by, and he saw spots as his head smashed into the passenger window again while the car tumbled over once more.

Seeing white from the impact, unable to catch his breath, he and everything in the car circled in the air as flying objects.

This is why we wear seat belts, he thought. And he wished he'd put his on.

His life flashed in short memories. Hugs and kisses at bed time. Stories Mom read to him. Cookies and milk after school with Gram. His first bike with Mom teaching him to ride. Christmas' trees and birthdays. She always attended his birthdays. Gram giving him the keys to Blue. Everything blurred together but he saw Gram and Mom. Hugs and I love you. Mom's face crying.

He wished his last words to her hadn't made her cry. Now he'd never see her again.

"I can't die. Please, I'm too young to die. I have stuff to work out. I want to talk to my Dad."

But he couldn't stop the jeep from rolling, and now he'd never find out why Ned Walker had fainted when he found out he was his real dad. "God, please, I need another chance."

The book bag, the half-drunk soda bottles, the candy wrappers, chip bags, and cigarette packages hit him as he circled the air the jeep flipping over beating his body against hard metal and glass.

Abruptly the jeep stopped rolling and gravity returned dropping him, with a solid thud, slamming him to a stop as the world went dark, his last thoughts that only the good die young.

Anna turned onto the bypass, and hit stop and go traffic.

"I didn't realize this town had rush." Felicity shaded her eyes against the evening sun. Squinting, she tried to see ahead of them.

"Funny." Anna rolled her eyes at her. "Must be a fender bender or something." Then her friend's eyes widened. "Oh, no, is that Sharon's SUV's on the side of the road."

"If it is then she's left her driver's door open." Not a good sign in her opinion, but she kept that to herself, knowing Anna would probably freak out if she knew about her and Oliver's real past. But now she sat up and took notice.

They inched forward and as soon as they reached where Sharon's SUV looked abandoned in the ditch, Anna said, "Look is that a car upside down out in the sand? Oh, my God. Is that Adrian's car?"

"Could be since I'm pretty sure that's Sharon by the wreck."

"Adrian!"

"Anna, pull over right now!"

"What are you going to do?"

"Go and help."

"I don't think that's a good idea. We need to stay in the car. Wait for help to arrive."

"The car's smoking. Adrian could still be inside."

"I'm sure someone's called 911 by now."

"ANNA, PULL OVER!"

"You don't know what you're doing? You could get hurt. FELICITY? Do not get out of the car."

Felicity opened the door and started to get out then remembered she wore heels.

"Anna, you have on flats. Give me your shoes!"

"My shoes?" She looked puzzled.

"Yeah, give me your shoes."

"I don't think this is a good idea."

"SHOES! ANNA! NOW!"

She pulled them off and thrust her shoes at her, with the words. "I'm going to call Oliver."

"You do that."

Throwing her heels in the seat, she slipped them on. They were a little big but she could work with them as she headed at a dead run toward the overturned car and Sharon.

Please review if you have time.

And please, save your own life. Don't text and drive or walk and text.

Our family buried someone not long ago, she was looking at her phone and walking down the highway. She got clipped by a semi and became an instant organ donor, and she was twenty-eight. I'm sure she didn't believe it could happen to her.

JUST DON'T DO IT. That message isn't worth your life or someone else's.

Also don't forget. Good news. I have finally launched my website and the next chapter of this story is already up on my site. I will post the next chapter on this site in one week's time, but I will always stay at least one bonus chapter ahead on my site.
