Song
Kokiri Village at sunrise was usually a calm, tranquil place where the only sounds could be heard from the waterfall running into the pond and a few early rising birds. However, that morning there was another, rather unwanted sound screeching throughout the entire village at such a volume that it was a surprise anyone was still sleeping.
"Ugh, what the heck is that?" Saria blinked, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. The deafening pitch of whatever was the source of the noise was physically hurting her ears.
Making her way into the village, she immediately saw the culprit. Mido was stood atop the tower in the centre, dancing around without a care in the world while playing a wooden flute.
"Mido!" Saria yelled from below him but of course, the boy was too engrossed in his 'playing' to hear anything. Walking up the ramp behind her house and along the bridge, she met him at the top, an unimpressed expression on her face. "Mido!"
"Huh?" The Kokiri leader stopped his playing. "Oh, hey, Saria! Did ya come to enjoy my playing up close?" He grinned.
"Enjoy isn't the word I'd use." She went to snatch the flute out of his hands but he was too quick.
"What do you think you're doing?! I haven't even finished the first verse of this song yet!" He held the instrument out of her reach. About to carry on playing, he noticed she was stood with her hands on her hips, glaring him down in that way she only seemed to reserve for his benefit. "Okay, I get it now."
"Finally," Saria smiled.
"You're jealous! Sure, you can play the ocarina but when it comes to this bad boy." He held up the flute, twisting it through his fingers. "You're at a loss and my talents are too much for you, right?"
The green haired girl was lost for words. There was absolutely no point arguing with him when he was being like this. Covering her ears as he started his 'song' once again, she went back to her house, not wanting to see his face any more, even if she still had to hear that shrieking tune.
This routine continued for the next few days until finally, Saria couldn't take it any longer. Estimating the time Mido started his playing, she made sure to wake up even earlier and set herself right outside his house before he had a chance to get started. Taking out her ocarina, she ran her hands along the smooth wood, contemplating what to play. She was used to playing songs the Deku Tree had taught her but none of those were quite what she wanted. It had to be annoying and yet catchy at the same time, something repetitive enough to make Mido realise how troublesome he was being.
She tested out a few notes in various sequences until one caught her interest. "This might work." Playing the three notes over and over, she began to play louder and more determined. Forgetting the original purpose of the notes, she added more to the tune, expertly picking up the tempo the longer she played.
As the song drifted through the village, the trees and plants became alive at the sound, appearing to dance and sway to the music. Poking their heads sleepily out of their houses, some of the Kokiris glanced in Saria's direction, wondering what was going on.
"Is that Mido again?" Fado rubbed her eyes. "At least he sounds better this time."
"Nope, it's Saria!" One of the boys shouted. "It's Saria's song!"
