Best Friend

"Thanks for this, I don't know how I would've carried all this awesome stuff without you!" Rela, one of the twins exclaimed as she and Saria entered the twins' house.

"It's no trouble." Saria put down the big, cracked pot she'd been carrying. Staring at the odd collection of pots, stones and what looked to be a smashed green rupee, she wouldn't have called them 'awesome' personally but as long as her friend was happy she wasn't going to argue. "What're you going to do with all these things?"

"Um, I don't know yet but something will inspire me soon enough!" Rela grinned.

"Well, here, let me take the pot and try to fix it up for you." The green haired girl knew her friend was perfectly capable of fixing it herself but when her sister saw this mess, she'd have other things to worry about.

"Oh, thank you! I guess I did bring a lot back from the woods, huh?" The twin handed Saria the pot. "You know what? After my sister, you're probably the best friend I have Saria."

Later on that day, Saria found herself walking through the village when she suddenly heard someone fumbling around in the bushes outside Mido's house.

"Oh man, he's gonna' kill me if I don't find it!" Lomi, one of the boys Mido liked to boss around scolded himself.

"Lomi? Are you ok?" Saria stopped to ask.

"Huh? Oh! Saria! Well, ya see, Mido lent me a five rupee the other day to buy some seeds from the shop and I was finally able to get it back today in exchange for some green rupees but now I've gone and lost it somewhere in these bushes!" The boy started frantically flinging small bushes aside.

"Can't you just give him another five rupee?" She had a feeling she knew the answer already but it was worth a shot.

"I can't! Mido said it was really sentimental to him and he'll be super mad if he doesn't get it back."

Saria sighed, Mido was up to his usual tricks again. "I'll help you find it."

Searching the nearby grass, the pair gradually moved closer to the pond, until Saria's hand skimmed over something small and shiny.

"I think I've-"

Splash

Lomi had been walking quickly backwards behind Saria, managing to bump into her and send her flying into the pond.

"Found it." She spat out a mouthful of water.

"Yikes! I'm sorry!" Lomi reached out a hand to pull the soaking girl out. "But hey, thanks a lot for finding the rupee! You're a real pal, Saria, a best pal!"

As the evening sun began to set over the small village, a dried off Saria was about to head home for the night when she caught sight of one of the Know-It-All brothers, Remo, or Rem for short, making his way towards the Lost Woods with a nervous expression on his face.

"Going for an evening stroll through the woods?" She asked him jokingly. No one went for a stroll through the Lost Woods without good reason.

"A-actually, I was going to- Uh, never mind, it's kinda' daft really." Rem glanced down, shuffling his feet in the grass.

"I'm sure it's not daft at all. Come on, what was it?" Saria knew Remo wasn't one to take part in silly schemes like Mido or some of the other boys.

"I uh, I've noticed Fala has been looking a bit down lately and I wanted to cheer her up, you know? I remembered her favourite flower grows somewhere in the woods so wanted to go get some for her."

Fala was Rela's twin and it was true that she had been looking a little sad lately. It was also common knowledge that Remo had a soft spot for her.

"I think I know the flowers you're on about..." Saria pictured the dainty purple flowers in her mind, having seen them countless times in the twins' house in the past. "They can't be too far into the woods, I can help you find them."

"Aw jeez, Saria, would you? That'd be great!" Rem's mood instantly perked up.

"What're you doing?! You can't go wandering around the Lost Woods at this hour!" Nori, Saria's light blue fairy hissed into her ear.

"Stop worrying, we're not going far." Saria ignored her fairy and entered the woods.

Walking through a series of tunnels, the two soon stumbled upon a grassy clearing filled to the brim with various flowers and plants.

"There it is!" Rem pointed towards some purple flowers, perched high on top of a tree.

"Of course they're up there..." Saria frowned then had an idea. "I think I could reach them if you can give me a lift."

Helping his friend get some height, Remo squeaked when he noticed a gang of unimpressed deku scrubs bouncing in their direction. "Uh Saria? We've got company!"

"Almost got them...!" Saria stretched as far as she could while balancing on Rem's shoulders.

Suddenly, there was a thud as the boy got pelted with a series of deku nuts. Wobbling for a few seconds, he yelped when one hit him right in the face, causing him to move violently from under Saria. Letting out a startled scream, the girl managed to grip onto the highest branch in the tree, allowing her to reach one of the flowers.

"Okay, I've got one!" She called out. Turning to check on Rem, she got a shock when a seed struck her in the back, sending her tumbling down into a bush of stinging nettles. Ignoring the burning sensation on her arms and legs, she signalled for Rem to run.

"I told you this was a bad idea!" Nori shrieked over the screeching deku scrubs as the pair rushed from the clearing.

"Here... you... go!" Saria wheezed, rubbing a dock leaf on her stings.

"Thanks so much, Saria! I'm so sorry you ended up getting hurt. You sure there's nothing I can do to help?" Rem looked genuinely apologetic.

"No, I'll be fine!" She put on a brave face, not wanting him to feel any worse than he already did.

"Well, thanks again. You're such a good friend. A best friend!" Rem smiled before disappearing into the village.

That night, Saria sat in her house, looking up at the ceiling from her small wooden bed. It was true that she had a lot of good friends within the village and she knew they would always be there if she needed them but then why did she feel so alone? If she was everyone's best friend, who was hers?
