Felicity gave thanks for Anna's shoes as she ran through the hot sand toward the wreck.
Sharon, on her bare knees in that sand, screamed Adrian's name and jerked on the mangled car's door handle. This, clearly, not working, the woman beat on the driver's window with the palms of her hands, losing it.
"Answer me, Adrian. Damn it. YOU ANSWER ME! YOU ARE NOT DEAD. DO YOU HEAR ME?"
Falling to her knees, she skidded to a stop in the hot sand and pressed her nose against the unbroken driver's door glass, while Sharon hollered Adrian's name.
The large teen laid prone, face down, on the upside down car's roof, bleeding and looking broken.
The wreck had compacted the Jeep into one big, jagged, metal ball. She found herself amazed the jeep's side windows remained intact, though impact had crushed the windshield, and spider webbed the rear glass.
A hissing noise drew her attention, along with a small sizzling sound coming from the engine.
Her brain processed running scenarios as she gathered facts.
The battery was upside down. The smell of gas and oil filled the air. The sizzle came again. Leaking fluids everywhere. The battery shorting out against the car's metal frame.
Frack, it'd be easy to achieve combustion.
One spark from that upside down battery added to the gas or fumes and this kid would be getting a one-way ticket to whatever afterlife he did or didn't believe in.
And if she wasn't quick the car would take Sharon and her with him.
Another hiss.
Time to move this along.
"Sharon!"
The woman kicked at the door glass now.
"Sharon! Listen to me. We have to get him out."
Frack, how did she get into these situations? Here she was in a small town. No villains or vigilantes anywhere. Safe and easy life here.
When would she learn to mind her own business? Her heart leapt into her throat.
She shook her blonde head and thought probably never knowing her. Seemed she thrived on this crap.
The ugly thought, remember you were bored, cropped up.
Shut up, she told herself. You're not bored now, especially as she watched a continuous tiny puff of smoke climb from the engine's hood and the stench of gasoline filled her lungs.
Faint sirens screamed in the distance but help was still too far away.
Another hiss of liquid leaking onto hot metal and she grabbed Sharon's shoulders and shook her hard. "STOP freaking out! Get it together. We have to get him out NOW. This car could blow up any minute, and I know we shouldn't move him but we can't wait. Now, you have to help me. He's too heavy for either of us to move alone."
The woman's eyes panicked, she shook her again. "Listen to me. We crawl in that car now and pull him out. Focus and right now or he'll die."
Another hiss and the smell of fuel filled the air.
"But I can't get the door open. And I've tried kicking but the window won't break. I can't get in."
"The car's got laminated side glass. Kept him from being ejected from the car during the rolling but it's hell to break. Probably a trick to breaking it but I don't have time to look it. We need to finish kicking out the windshield or the back glass."
A motorcycle roar filled the air.
Turning her head, she saw her man doing what he did best.
Well one of the thing he did best.
Oliver arrived throwing sand in a rooster tail as he braked the bike to a hard stop. The bike kept moving as he jumped off, kicking away, while dumping his bike into the sand.
Without a backward glance, he ran, across the sand, toward he. And her chest lightened at the sight of him.
Tossing his helmet aside, he growled, "Felicity, what have we got? I'm thinking no time here."
"You're right, time is of the essence and we need to fracking hurry. This Jeep's bleeding fluids everywhere, and I smell fresh gas. Hopefully the electric fuel pump shut the fuel off, but who knows? Since all you need for combustion is oxygen, fuel and ignition, and you know a spark? And since the battery's no doubt shorting out again the car's body, which means we have spark. And, since the car's upside down, the motor oil and transmission fluids are leaking out the dip sticks, which mean we have fuel. And . . ." She made an exploding motion with her hands.
"Felicity, save time next time and just say the car's about to catch on fire and blow up. Now, get out of here! And take her with you." His Green Arrow voice growled as he pointed.
She grinned at him and he grinned back.
Unable to help herself, she rushed him and kissed him before she pushed back and grabbed Sharon's hand.
He put his game face on. "You get her back, now. I'll get him."
Oliver started kicking the glass in the car's door and it didn't give. And Oliver had strong legs.
"The back or front glass, Oliver. The doors are laminated glass. The back and front glass are still tempered and already broken. Easier."
Ned appeared out of the blue as he sprinted across the sand screaming. "Sharon, get out of here. I've got him. I promise I've got him."
"Ned?"
"I'm here. You go. I'll get him out."
"Get out of the way, Oliver, there's a trick to breaking a laminated door glass." Ned pulled a pocket knife out of his pocket and stabbed the window at the top corner, by the door lock, which was really the bottom of the window, since the car lay upside down.
The window broke with a large popping sound as the glass spider webbed but didn't break apart. Ned kicked the window with his heavy army boots and the glass folded in the middle like a piece of paper. The man grabbed the limp glass, pulled it out in one whole piece and threw it behind him and crawled in to the damaged car before she could blink.
Oliver looked from the man disappearing into the flipped car at her and did a double take.
"Wow, never knew Ned could move that fast." She grabbed Sharon's hand.
"Me either. Now get her out of here." And he dropped and crawled into a Jeep that could blow up at any second like doing so was everyday life. She sighed and shook her head, finding herself happy to hear his Arrow voice.
She tugged on Sharon's hand. "We need to go."
"No, I'm not leaving them." Sharon pulled her hand free, dropped to her knees and stuck her head in the Jeep's busted out window. "Ned, is he breathing. Please, tell me he's breathing."
"He is." Ned yelled. "Now, get back, Sharon. This car could blow any second. GO! NOW!"
"No, everything I want is right here. I'm staying until everyone is save."
Ned's face harsh, he reached and squeezed her arm. "I swear I'll get your boy out or die trying."
"Our boy."
Ned nodded. "Yeah, our boy."
Felicity looked at Oliver and shut her eyes and opened them. "You're the love of my life, please be careful. I've got a weird feeling."
"Get out of here." And he crawled deeper into an upside, smoking car, and she forced herself to move.
"Come on. We need to get further back." She tugged on Sharon's arm.
"NO! I want to stay here."
"Yes. Oliver wants me further back, and I trust his judgement. I distract him when I'm close and in danger, so I'm doing what he asks. Now move since I'm not letting you distract him and get him killed. He's good at things like this. We have to trust him and Ned to get Adrian out."
"My boy's hurt. I can't leave Ned's in danger too."
"We have to get further back and trust that Oliver and Ned will save him." She pulled on the woman's arm as she heard a small pop and the smoke thickened out of the car's engine. "NOW! We have to go. NOW!"
Sobbing, Sharon cried out, fighting her. "Adrian, Ned. Let me go. I have to go to them."
"NO! Oliver's there. Give them time."
And just as she said the words she saw the flash of the engine igniting.
They had achieved spark and now the car was now on fire.

Oliver
"Adrian? Can you hear me?" Ned had crawled half way into the car, pushing aside the trash and the kid's backpack, which he pushed out of the way. Oliver saw Adrian's cell phone lay beside him on the Jeep's roof, and he slung it hard out the open window into the sand.
The whoosh of the fire igniting reached his ears, along with a hiss and the crackle of something burning.
Down on his belly like a snake, hindered by the not completely deflated airbag, Adrian's backpack, trash in the car and the bucket seats, he reached and laid the seat down to give himself more room to crawl further into the car's ceiling.
Black smoke now rolled out from under the dash and the hiss of liquid hitting hot metal had his heart pounding. He coughed and held his breath.
Ned rolled the teen over.
"Shit, I don't think he's breathing?" Ned's voice broke.
"No time to check. We've got fire in the engine. No time now." Scooting on his belly, he flipped over on his back and kicked the back glass out, sending it flying. "Grab his other arm and help me. He's heavy. Let's take him out your window. On three. One, two, three."
He grabbed the boy's arm by the forearm and pulled and the teen barely budged as he struggled.
The black smoke filled the car. Ned ordered. "Try not to breathe the smoke in. It's toxic."
"Know that, Ned. Pull harder he's heavy."
Adrian didn't make a sound or stir, as they moved him toward the hole in the back of the Jeep, but the smoke got thicker, quickly filling the car and both of them were coughing.
"Get out, I've got him."
He crawled out still coughing and turned to help as Ned grabbed the teen's arm, and together, they jerked the teen out onto the sand.
Standing, together they dragged Adrian lifeless body across the hot sand. Still trying to get further away when a familiar pop sounded.
"Get down." He fell over the teen covering him, and Ned fell covering him as the car exploded becoming a fire ball engulfed in flames.
Flaming debris surround him as he pushed Ned off him.
"You're on fire." He rolled Ned into the sand, putting his shirt out, while the man ripped it from his body, exposing the tattoo on his chest that said "Sharon" right over his heart.
Finishing stomping the t-shirt out, Ned hurriedly put the burnt article of clothing back on. "Not one word, Oliver. I told you I was drunk."
"Says something that you never had it removed but I'm not judging."
Sharon ran up, crying, her make up running streaks down her face. Felicity right behind her. She ran straight into his arms and squeezed him for all she was worth. "You love to cut it close don't you."
"Had plenty of time." She squeezed him again.
"Adrian! Is he?" Sharon fell to her knees in the sand and pushed the hair out of the youth's face.
He checked Adrian's pulse. "He's alive. Pulse is strong. He's knocked out cold though."
"Ned, are you alright?" Sharon went to hug the man, and he put his hand out stopping her.
"Later, Sharon. I'll hug you later but not in public."
"But . . . but, I don't understand." Sharon dropped her arms.
"I know and I'm sorry. I need to tell you something important, but now's not the time or place. I know this is hard, Sharon, but I need you to trust me. People are no doubt recording this. We have to think about Adrian right now and I need you to trust me. Okay?"
"Okay." Sharon nodded and brushed Adrian's hair back from his forehead.
"Oliver?" Felicity tilted her blonde head and whispered. "I got Adrian's phone."
He whispered. "Good, I'll explain soon about what's going on."
She nodded.
The fire department and ambulance rolled in. And Joe and Wayne hustled across the sand with a backboard.
"Crap, and of course, he's one of your team members. Oliver, people are going to start saying being on your team's bad luck." Wayne lifted his chin to Sharon, Ned, and Felicity.
"Blame this one on me." Felicity gave a shrug. "Drove by and saw the wreck."
"He was ejected?" Joe worked on getting a neck brace on Adrian.
"No, pulled him out." Oliver braced as Joe stiffened.
"You moved him? Jesus, Oliver, he could be paralyzed."
Wayne frowned up him as he took his vitals.
He shrugged. "What were we supposed to do? Move him or watch the barbeque?"
"You have a way with words, Oliver. Like always." Wayne used his flash light to check Adrian's eyes. "We need to move, his pupils are unequal sizes."
"What does that mean?" Sharon demanded as her back stiffened.
"Head injury. Concussion. Maybe a brain bleed. Sharon, you'll want to ride in with him. They're going to need your signature to admit him."
"God, yes." She stood.
"Let's move then."
Sharon froze. "Wait. My car? I can't leave it on the side of the road. I'll get towed."
Felicity offered. "Got you covered. I'll drive it to the hospital for you."
Sharon nodded. "Thanks. I think the keys are in it."
"Go," Felicity waved her hand. "I've got this." She squeezed his hand and headed across the sand toward Sharon's car. "Be right back. I need to get my shoes."
Sharon looked at Ned and shut her eyes, for an instant, before she opened them and hurried away. Ned's eyes followed her and Adrian, until the ambulance's doors shut, and they drove away lights and sirens on.
Moving, he stood beside the man. "Keep holding it together, Ned, I'd bet whoever's watching you both right now has eyes on you. Don't do anything to tip them off or this could quickly become life and death. Someone's gone to a lot of trouble over the years to let you screw things up now."
The man nodded. "I want to go to the hospital. But don't think I should. What do you think?" The man rubbed his scar on his chest.
"I think you never came when the other team members got hurt so you should stay away until we figure this out. You need to act like it's a normal day. Go home. Do what you normally do. I'll go and keep you posted. Remember someone's watching right now and you've been told to stay away."
"I'm noting you're not saying everything going to be alright." Ned rubbed the burn on his chest again.
"Can't promise that. Have to say that most of my life nothing was ever alright. These last month's living with Felicity have been the best days of my life."
"Shit." Ned spit on the ground.
"Yeah, pretty much but things are looking up. You're not alone anymore. And between us, we'll figure this out."
"I've never gotten a happy ending in all my life. Why would I get one now?"
"Believe it or not, I've realized that you have to have hope to find love. And there come's my happy ending now. Could you give me a minute? I ditched my bike and don't know if I damaged it. I might need a ride."
"Sure. I'll wait." Ned walked toward his truck, lighting a cigarette.
Felicity walked up, swinging her heels from her fingers. "Feel like going out to eat? You know drama always makes me hungry. Anna said she'd drop me at the house to pick up the car."
Slinging his arm over her shoulder, he whispered in her ear, "Hospital café?"
"Seems to be our place. We should swing by and check on Jordan while we wait for news on Adrian. Seriously, Oliver, Mae going to be mad. She swears your soccer players are giving them way too much business lately."
"I don't see how she can blame me for Adrian wreck but you're right. Crap, I forgot my meds. You know she'll corner me and take my blood pressure."
"I'll pick them up for you and met you at the hospital."
He winked at her. "That's my girl. By the way are you ready to go back to not boring for a little while?"
She giggled and batted her lashes at him, while her eyes sparkled. "As a matter of a fact, I am. What's up?"
"Wait until I tell you Ned and Sharon's story. You're going to love it. It's a good mystery that needs your special touch."
"Do tell." And she smiled her smile up at him.
He whispered in her ear, "Later, too many people here now, but it starts about twenty some years ago with a boy and a girl and some bad guys."
"Oh, that's sounds like a great beginning. I love it and you." And Felicity laughed and hugged his neck.
Releasing him, she turned and skipped across the sand toward Anna's car. He shook his head. Only Felicity would be happy he had drama to share.
