An Angel's Ego
Cas has been able to fly for a while now. Well, more like hover, but it's a good start. Gabriel on the other hand has been nothing, but an arrogant little show off. Whenever Dean and Cas run away to the backyard to practice flying the angel will tag along and fly circles around the little angel. Sometimes Balthazar would join in on the teasing of Castiel's flying too, but he'd always help Cas practice afterward. Gabriel of course just kept on doing those big flips and summersaults.
It was a sunny morning and Cas, Dean, and Balthazar were in the backyard practicing. So far they had had a peaceful day without Gabe butting in and showing off. The angel was probably watching cartoons or playing on the Nintendo with Sam and Charlie. Either way, the three didn't care where he was as long as he stayed out of the way. Dean held his hands out, ready to catch the angel just in case. Balthazar and Castiel stood on the play set Bobby and Kevin had set up for the angels the other day.
"Remember, let the wind take you and use your wings to stears," Balthazar said, jumping off the rock himself and soaring around the play set a few times before landing next to his brother again. Cas nodded and readied himself. With a deep breath, the angel let his wings stretch out and he jumped into the air, catching the air and gliding.
"That's it, Cas!" Dean shouted, watching the angel as he glided and wobbled in the air. A smile spread across Castiel's face as he let the wind carry him. Balthazar flew up into the air after his little brother and began to instruct Cas to flap or turn his wings certain ways. Cas did as his brother instructed and Dean would cheer the angel on.
"Try to go a little higher," Balthazar suggested. "But be careful. The winds are starting to pick up." Cas nodded, flapping his wings hard so he went higher up.
"Coming through!" Gabriel screeched as he zapped himself next to Cas and did a spin, knocking Castiel a little. The smaller angel yelped as he lost concentration and a gust of wind caught his wings. The wind spun the angel a little before finally spitting Cas towards the ground at a dangerous height and speed.
"Cas!" Dean yelped, holding out his hands and diving for the angel. Balthazar covered his eyes, waiting to hear bones crunch against the ground, but there was none. "You alright, Cas?" Dean questioned as he pulled Castiel from his chest. The little angel stared up at Dean, breathing heavy from screaming. He flapped his wings a few times before finally nodding. Dean sighed and turned his attention to Gabriel as the angel flipped through the air, zapping one place to another. "Just because you can use your powers to zap yourself around and are a stronger flyer doesn't mean you can show off, Gabe," Dean shouted up at the older angel as he jumped back onto his feet with Cas in his arms.
"Yeah, Gabby, that was mean!" Cas shouted up at his brother. Gabriel did another flip in the air, completely ignoring the hunter and his brothers. Dean grimaced. That Angel's ego was going to get him in trouble one day. Well, it already had. Several times.
"Gabby, cut it out!" Balthazar shouted as his brother let the large gusts of wind slam into his wings and carry him higher into the air. "The wind's too strong to be doing that!" Gabe continued ignoring his brother and zapped even higher where the wind was strongest. Dean felt something squeeze inside him and began to panic as the angel got higher and higher.
"Gabe, it's time to come down. We get it, Dude. You're a good flyer…"
"Good? I'm awesome!" Gabe shouted. Dean tried to call the angel downward again, but Gabe only flew even higher until it finally happened. "Look what I..." A strong wind grabbed hold of Gabe and whipped him around hard. The angel gasped in shock as he got rocked about. Just as the angel was about to try to straighten himself another wave hit him and pinned his wings down.
"Gabe!" Balthazar screamed as his brother began to fall. Dean grabbed the middle angel before he could join his brother. "Dean, I…"
"You'll only get caught in the wind too. He's too high up," Dean shouted, before pushing Balthazar and Cas onto the play set steps and watching the angel tumble towards the ground. Gabriel screamed as he tumbled towards the earth. Every so often he would try to force his wings out, but the wind had him pinned. "Gabe, zap out of there!" Dean shouted frantically. "Zap!"
Boom!
Dean whirled around to see that Gabriel had zapped himself away from the wind, but he had been moving too fast to stop falling. Gabriel lay on his back in the grass, gasping, but not moving.
"Gabriel!" Dean screamed, rushing towards the stupid Archangel. Cas and Balthazar hurried after and the three kneeled around the angel. Gabriel was scuffed up and bruised and tears were burning in his eyes as he lay in the grass. "Gabe?" Dean whispered with worry, gently lifting the angel up. Gabe screamed in Dean's hold and a cry left Balthazar's lips.
"His wing!" the middle angel yelped. Dean's eyes fell down to the golden wing hanging limply to Gabe's side. It was twisted oddly and the feathers were in odd positions. Dean rearranged Gabe in his hold so the angel was laying on his tummy and the Winchester brushed his fingers against the bent bone. A sharp scream erupted from the angel and Dean pulled his hand from the wing. Yep, it was busted. Gently, Dean rushed Gabriel into the apartment and to the kitchen.
"Dean, what-" Kevin trailed off as he saw Dean run in with the sobbing angel. "Oh my god."
"Kevin, get Sam and grab the med kit," Dean ordered, gently folding Cas' baby blanket laying on the kitchen floor and setting it on the kitchen counter for Gabe to lay on. Balthazar and Castiel fluttered to their brother's side, trying to calm their crying brother down while Dean got out an ice pack to press against the broken wing. Luckily it had only been the one that broke, but how the hell were they going to fix a busted wing? They had to take Cas in when he broke an arm, but they couldn't do that now. It's not like there are any angel doctors waiting patiently in ER. Nope, they would have to take care of this one themselves.
"Oh, Gabe…" Sam gasped as he rushed in the room with Kevin, Bobby, and Charlie close behind. Sam handed Dean the first aid and started to brush the blond strands from Gabe's tear stained cheeks. Gabe turned his eyes to Sam's and started crying harder.
"H…hurts, Sammy. H…hurts s…so much," the angel sobbed. Sammy shushed the angel, leaning his forehead against the angel's and gently running his fingers through the blond locks of hair. Dean handed Sam an ice pack and gently rolled Gabe onto his belly so the hunter could start fixing the messed up wing. Dean gently took the wing in his hands, ignoring the scream that came out of Gabriel's mouth and Bobby peered at the busted limb carefully.
"It's not too different than a usual break, but bird wings are hallow so we have to be extra careful if we don't want to snap his wing any worse than it already is," Bobby informed the hunter. Dean nodded and began to run his fingers over the wing in search for the breaks.
"Stop! Please!" Gabe screamed. Sam just shushed the angel, pressing a wet cloth against the angel's sweaty forehead. Cas and Balthazar hung onto each other as they watched Dean's fingers find two breaks in Gabriel's wing. Taking in a breath Dean nodded at Sam and Bobby. Sam nodded back, turning back to comfort Gabe and Bobby held the angel down.
Snap! Snap! Gabriel screamed thrashing against the counter hard in attempt to get away. Dean held tightly onto the wing as the angel tried to pull free.
"Hey, it's okay, Gabe. We're done. We're done," Sam tried to reassure the angel over and over again.
"Charlie, Kevin, give me the splint and bandages in the kit," Dean ordered the two watching from the side. They nodded, grabbing what Dean asked and the hunter took the supplies from them. Bobby held the splint and wings in place while Dean wrapped the wing in bandages. Then, Dean took another bandage and tied the wing down against Gabriel's back. Dean looked over his handy work before finally stepping away and Sam gently lifted Gabe into his arms and carried the angel out of the kitchen. With a heavy sigh Dean plopped down on the counter and grabbed a beer from the fridge. "I never want to do that again," Dean mumbled. Nobody said anything. They didn't have to because they all felt the same.
Dean sat on the couch with Gabriel wrapped up in a blanket on his lap as they watched The Curse of the Black Pearl. Balthazar and Castiel sat on the arm rest of the chair closest to their brother and Dean, pretending to be Captain Jack and Will Turner with plastic butter knives. Gabriel watched his brother's, pouting as he crammed a scoop of ice-cream Sam had brought him from the kitchen into his mouth. Dean slapped the angle on the head, earning a glare from the injured angel.
"Stop pouting, Gabe. This is what you get for bragging," Dean told the angel. "You shouldn't be pouting anyway since you've got Sammy acting like a damn slave." Gabe smirked as Dean motioned at the bowl of ice-cream the angel was currently munching on.
"It is but a small offering for the perils I faced," Gabe stated smoothly, poking his tongue out at Dean. The Winchester rolled his eyes. Even broken and beaten the Angel can't help but be…well, Gabe. Balthazar tagged Castiel with a tap of his fingers and the two angels flew off the couch, chasing each other and giggling with glee. Gabriel's charm left and he watched the wings on his brothers' backs flutter as they moved. His injured wing shivered slightly from where it was tied down and the other curled protectively around the young angel. Dean watched him, feeling sorry for the poor angel. He couldn't imagine how it felt for an angel not to be able to fly. The hunter looked back up at the flying boys and nodded to himself. He was going to change that for the archangel. Scooping Gabe up carefully onto his shoulders Dean began to run around the room after Balthazar and Cas. Gabe gasped in surprise at the Winchester's actions and Dean looked over his shoulder at Gabe with a wide smile.
"Ready to fly, Captain?" Dean asked. Gabe's eyes widened and his chubby hands tightened around Dean's neck so not to fall off.
"Let's go!" Gabe shouted. Dean zoomed off, running as fast as he could without upsetting Gabriel's wing. Balthazar and Cas slowed down for the hunter and their brother. When Cas started wobbling, still not fully in control with his wings, Gabe started giving Cas a few tips on how to lean or whatever. A few times Gabe would snap his fingers and blast confetti in his brothers' faces, surprising the shit out of them. Dean's smile widened as he watched the angels flying above him and the angel on his shoulder. Gabe's ego was one like any other. The angel was rude, naughty, a show off, fun, lovable and always tricky. Those are some of the things that make him Gabe. A broken wing grounding him from flying or sprouting a few tricks wasn't going to stop him from expressing himself and Dean wasn't going to let it happen either.
And it's finally here! Hurray! It took a lot longer than I had hoped, but I got it.
