The Homeless Angel
Lucifer woke up, feeling cold and wet. He looked out around himself with blurry eyes, seeing that the sky was dark and rain was pelting down on him. He tried to get to his feet, but for some reason he couldn't support himself. Fear hit him hard and he looked down, expecting to find himself bloody and broken, but no it was something far more terrifying. His legs were no longer his own. They were small and chubby, no longer his vessel's strong, long legs. Lucifer gazed at the rest of himself, finding that his arms too were small and chubby too. He gazed into the growing puddle he was currently sitting in along with a heap of too big clothes. Realization hit him right in the face. He'd been de-aged. Memories of God and his plans suddenly came crashing down onto the angel and tears started to burn his eyes. Of course he'd been cast down too. Why had he thought he'd stay in Heaven with Joshua? He hated humans the most after all. Why was he left alone though? Why was no one here with him? It had been made clear where each angel needed to be, but what about him? Was he being abandoned? Left in the middle of a woods scared and alone. A sob broke past his lips and Lucifer didn't hold back as fear rattled in his chest.
The sound of feet crunching against leaves could be heard in the darkness, sending more fear into the scared angel. Was it an animal coming to feast? Some monster that would rob him of his feathers for spells? Luci didn't know. All he knew was fear and he hated it.
Suddenly, he was blinded by light. It shown in his face and the silhouette of a woman appeared in the light. Monster it was then. Luci tried to crawl away, screaming in terror as arms suddenly grabbed at him. He beat at the monster with his muddy, wet, wings and took a few swings, but he was too weak.
"Hey, hey, you're okay, sweetie," A soft voice whispered. Luci felt something warm wrap around his shivering, naked body and gentle fingers brush through his wet hair. Lucifer glanced upward, meeting his captor's eyes through his blurry ones. It was a woman with a sheriff hat and dark brown hair. She had a startled look on her face, but a kind and calming smile. Lucifer tears slowly stopped falling and a feeling of safety warmed him. "My name's Jody. Don't worry, honey, I'm going to get you somewhere safe," she whispered, rocking him back and forth. She started moving, carrying Lucifer towards her car. She pulled one hand from him and opened the drivers door. When inside she set the angel onto her lap, moving her coat around so it completely swallowed the tiny creature. She turned on the heat then and Lucifer closed his eyes in bliss as the warmth encased him. Jody smiled down at him and stepped on the gas, racing back to home.
"Alex!" Jody called as she entered the room. A girl with brown hair walked into the hall to meet her adopted mother, mouth dropping when she saw a two year old infant with wings in Jody's arms.
"Uh...what the hell is that?" Alex questioned. Lucifer huddled closer to Jody and the sheriff started carding her fingers through his soft wings.
"He's an angel, Alex. I found him out in the woods," she stated, walking up the stairs and into her son's room. She pulled out a dusty, old box marked with her son's name. Alex helped her open it and Jody pulled a pair of baby clothes from the bottom of the box. She then took Lucifer into the bathroom, turning on the water for the tub.
"Wow, so I guess Sam wasn't kidding about all the angels in heaven getting shrunk, huh?" Jody laughed.
"Ya think?" When the water was warm enough Jody set Lucifer down into the warm water. God knows how long he'd been sitting out in that cold rain. "Can you watch him for a second?" Jody asked. I'm going to see what I can do about getting his wings to fit in these clothes." Alex gave a weary look towards the baby angel, but nodded. Jody left the room quickly after that, leaving the two alone. Alex looked into the bathtub to see Luci sitting silently in the water. Alex leaned over the rim of the tub and lightly splashed the angel, knocking him out of whatever depressing or frightful thoughts he might have been having. The angel looked up at her in confusion, slightly reminding her of Cas when the angels visited. She splashed him again and a small giggle left his lips. The angel seemed surprised by the sound and Alex was reminded that not all angels had been like Gabriel, Balthazar, and Cas. They were soldiers. Hell, maybe this angel hadn't laughed like that before? Alex splashed him again, hoping for the same response and again she watched as a shy smile ghosted over Lucifer's lips. The baby angel splashed back, not knowing why he found it so fun to splash the warm water, but he went along with it. He puffed up his hellfire red wings, swiping them through the water and hitting Alex with a tidal wave of water.
"BAWINGS!" Luci screeched, giggling loudly as Alex brushed the wet hair out of her eyes.
"Glad to see he's living up to his brothers' bath skills," Jody said as she entered the half flooded bathroom again. Alex and Lucifer both laughed and Jody picked Lucifer out of the water, drying him off with a cottony towel. He jabbered to her as she dried his now clean hair and wings. Some words came out and others were complete gibberish. Jody set him down on the counter and held up the baby clothes once he was dry. "The Winchesters used to cut holes out of the backs for their angels before Gabe and Balthy could use their grace." No one noticed how Lucifer stiffened on hearing the word Winchester. Instead, they both helped the angel into the footy baby clothes and pushed his wings through the holes in the back. Lucifer flapped his wings a few times, seeming content. Alex picked him up then and followed Jody into the living room. "She watched as Jody grabbed her phone from the table and dial in a number.
"You calling them?" Alex asked. Jody nodded, holding the phone to her ear. It rang a few times before Kevin's voice sounded on the other side.
"Kevin? Hey, it's Jody. I just found an angel," she said into the phone. She heard Kevin shout for Sam and Dean.
"You're on speaker, Jody," Kevin said through the phone. Jody grinned.
"How's it going, boys?" she called through the phone. There was a loud clatter from the other room and a few swears.
"Oh, the usual," Sam sighed, shouting at someone (Gabriel) in the background. Jody chuckled and turned her gaze towards Alex and Lucifer.
"So, think you can help me out with my angel situation?" she asked. There were a few murmurs from the other end until Dean's voice crackled loudly over the others.
"Did you find a card with his name on it in his clothes?" Dean asked. Jody swore to herself. No, she didn't. She had left the sopping wet mess in the goddamn woods.
"No, sorry, boys. Is there another way?" she asked.
"Can you tell us about his wings. They're all different so…"
"Red," Jody interrupted. "The really downy feathers are slightly pink too." Silence was all she heard on the other end. Jody frowned, wondering for a second if her connection broke.
"Are you sure they're...red?" Sam asked carefully on the other end. Jody frowned and glanced back towards Lucifer.
"Either that or I'm red-green colorblind." Silence once again was all she heard from the boys. Jody sighed, irritably. "I don't have time for the silent treatment, Boys. Who-"
"Lucifer," Dean's voice answered suddenly. Jody's eyes widened and she stared in disbelief at the giggling baby in Alex's arms.
"Lucifer?" she questioned. Alex's eyes widened then and the baby shrunk down in her arms on seeing her reaction. "Dean, this kid is in no way the devil-"
"He is Jody," Dean sighed. "Listen, I'll text you what you'll need to pick up to take care of him okay? Stuff for his wings and all that."
"You're not going to come and take him home?" Jody questioned. Lucifer curled in on himself.
"No. God chose where the angels end up for a reason. We just want to record where they all are," Sam explained.
"Yeah, we can barely handle three anyway," Dean grunted. "Snap a picture of him and send it to me alright? We need to keep records of the ones we find," he added. Jody gave an affirmative and said her goodbyes before hanging up the phone. She stared at it for a few seconds before looking towards Alex and Lucifer. Lucifer's face was red as silent tears ran down his face. Alex tried to calm, him but the little angel only kept on crying. Jody knelt down on the floor by her daughter and the angel.
"Hey, what's the matter, buddy?" she asked, reaching out for the little guy. Lucifer swat a wing at her hand and rubbed at his eyes with his tiny fists.
"H...hwate mwe," Lucifer sobbed. Alex looked at the baby angel with shock.
"We don't hate you…" Alex trailed off and looked to Jody. The woman was staring at the angel, biting her lip. Fury erupted in Alex's eyes. "You can't honestly…"
"He's satan, Alex. It kind of catches a person off guard that God chose you to watch over the angel everyone sees as a monster." Jody said in a hushed voice.
"I was a monster too once," Alex all but whispered. "But you helped me. You and the Winchesters. Maybe that's why God or whoever the hell chose you to find him? So that you could help him too like you did me," Alex said, hugging the baby close to her chest. Jody smiled a small smile at her adopted daughter and reached out for Lucifer, brushing her fingers through the red feathers. Lucifer didn't swat her this time. Instead, he met her gaze, still sniffling.
"Luce?" she whispered softly. Lucifer looked up at her, eyes red from the tears. "Do you want to be part of our family, honey?" Shock took over Lucifer's expressions. "You're no more a monster than anybody else. You're our angel and if you'll have us...we'd like to add you to our little family." He looked between Alex and Jody like he was waiting for them to start laughing like they were pulling some sick joke. When they didn't Lucifer met Jody's eyes, new tears falling down his face. They weren't sad or frightened tears this time though. They were happy ones.
The little angel held out his arms, reaching out for Jody and the sheriff took him into her arms, cradling him close to her. "Welcome home, Luce."
