My Special Angel
The angels sat by the table, surrounded by several human children eating glue and old macaroni noodles. They were supposed to make a picture, but apparently eating the craft supplies was more fun. Still, they participated. Balthazar created a smiley face with his, claiming that it was a portrait of Gabriel's beautiful mug. Gabe reacted by squirting glue onto Balthy's head. Balthy in return, ruined Gabriel's picture of a lollipop. Cas had made sure to keep his bee portrait away from his brothers. While destroying each others artwork they continuously glanced at Dean every few seconds. The hunter was talking with the daycare teacher, looking disgusted and ready to burst. Maybe if they were lucky Dean would get them kicked out? Well, getting kicked out would actually be a bad plan. They were on a mission after all. Sam had sent Dean to take the three to daycare against their will. Usually Dean just drives to the park instead, but the angels felt the pull of a baby angel's grace when they passed Daisy's Daycare. Now they were stuck watching kids eat glue until they found the little guy or gal.
"Heys! Heys!" a little voice called a little ways down the table. The angels followed the voice and spotted a blond haired two year old kid in a grey sweater. The kid held up his plate, showing off the mess of macaroni to everyone in the room. What it was, none of the angels could tell. Daisy the daycare lady seemed to know though.
"Oh!" Daisy cried, walking away from Dean mid-conversation and striding over to the child. "What a gorgeous picture, Ezra!" The angels stiffened. Ezra? Oh no. "Here's a gold star for your beautiful work," Daisy said, putting a gold sticker on Ezra's sweater before taking his picture to hang on the wall with several other hideous crafts. Dean knelt next to the angels then by the table.
"Please tell me you found your little bro or sis? This place is making me sick," Dean grumbled. "That freaking lady clearly has no idea on how to take care of little people." The hunter shivered again, nose wrinkling when he noticed several kids sucking on their glue covered fingers. "So...do we have an angel?" he questioned, looking back to the angels. The angels each pointed at the blond child currently gloating over his gold star. Dean frowned at the angel. "Uh...okay. Who's he?"
"Ezra," Gabe sighed. Dean's frown grew.
"Never heard of him."
"You wouldn't," Balthazar sighed. "He's a low class angel. Pretty much just kept in the back row so he wouldn't trip over himself, ya know?" Balthazar began to pick at the drying glue on his fingers, looking rather bored on discussing the new angel. "Ezra is one of those guys that tries to make himself important though."
"Michael asked me personally to blah blah blah!" Gabe shouted, mimicking the angel. "Commander Castiel asked me to go for tea and cookies!" Balthazar and Gabriel both snickered and a look of irritation crossed Cas' face like he was re-living a piece of his past that was cringe worthy..
"It appears he hasn't changed," Dean huffed, nodding back towards the sweater wearing angel. "Wonder what poor bastard got stuck with him?"
"We can find out tomorrow actually," Gabriel stated, pulling a homemade card from his pocket. Dean took it and read the scribbled printing. It was a birthday party invitation from one of the girls at the daycare. "Everyone is invited," Gabriel stated. "I doubt Ezra and his folks won't show up." Dean nodded.
"Sounds good to me as long as we can leave this god awful place," Dean groaned. The angels each hummed in agreement and Dean got back to his feet. He handed each angel their jacket, Cas ending up in two since his trench coat was in no way warm enough to keep him from freezing. Dean started to herd the angels to the door, waving to Mrs. Daisy on the way before quickly rushing as far away from the daycare as they could.
Cas, Balthazar, and Gabriel bounced up and down in the princess style bouncy house. Once again they were on a mission. While Dean talked with the other parents at the party the angels were to follow Ezra and find out who his parents were. Ezra was a few bounces away from them, trying to show off how far he could jump, but it was a bit hard when someone always bumped into him when he tried. His three brothers were tired of following him though. The angel had to play every game at the party and run up to everybody there in attempt to boast or make up a story that made him sound special. Gabe, Balthy, and Cas were seriously thinking about tying him to a tree for the rest of the party.
"Should we help him?" Balthazar asked when Ezra fell onto his hands and knees. He had been bouncing in front of a group of boys and one had pushed him out of annoyance. Gabriel nodded and hopped over with his brothers close behind. Ezra had managed to push himself up a little, but there were tears in his eyes and a blush on his cheeks.
"Ezra?" Gabe called. The angel in question looked up, eyes widening when he met his brothers' gazes.
"G...Gabwiel?" he gasped. He looked towards Balthazar and Castiel. "Balty? Castwiel?" The two nodded and Ezra quickly brushed his tears away, putting on a new face that was not his own. All three groaned. They were sick of seeing that face.
"Drop the act," Balthazar stated before Ezra could try anything. The angel stared at Balthazar, face reddening slightly again.
"Don't knows what's you twalk about," Ezra huffed, looking away quickly. Cas stepped forward, pressing a gentle hand to Ezra's back. He could feel the angel's wings folded underneath the fabric of his clothes. They felt tense.
"Hey!" a child called from across the bouncy house. Ezra glanced up, meeting the gaze of the same kid that had pushed him. "The gweatest jwumper can'ts get ups by himselfs?" the kid taunted. Cas felt Ezra's wings grow even more tense beneath his hand. Cas pressed back in attempt to comfort his brother, but Ezra's wings instantly tried to pull away from Cas' touch. Cas pulled his hand back a little, but kept his smile on.
"Lets get out of here, okay?" Ezra frowned at his brother, confusion written all over his face. Cas nodded to the laughing boy still taunting the poor angel. "You rather stay?" Ezra grabbed Cas' hand in response. Cas grinned and helped his little brother towards the exit of the bouncy house. When out, Ezra was led to the back of the party behind a few shady trees. When covered by trees Gabriel snapped his fingers, grace coiling around him, Balthazar, and Castiel. Their wings manifested feather by feather, shimmering lightly as they came into view. Ezra marveled at their wings, not noticing that Balthazar and Castiel had snuck behind him to pull of his jacket. When the cool air hit his wings Ezra let out a gasp, turning his head to the the side to see his simple cream colored wings stretching out behind him. He blushed, folding them behind his back. Balthazar frowned at the action.
"Why are you hiding them?" Balthazar asked. Ezra's cheeks blushed deeper and he pointed at the wings of the three and then to his, still not looking at them. Gabriel snapped his fingers.
"It's because ours are cool, right?"
"Gabby!" Cas cried. "That's mean!"
"Hey, its the truth," Gabe added, gazing at his wings proudly. Castiel rolled his eyes and looked back to Ezra, reaching out and petting the creamy feathers.
"I like them," Cas said, causing Ezra to finally meet his gaze.
"Y...yous do?" he asked, eyes wide. Cas nodded and continued to pet the soft feathers. A small smile pulled at Ezra' face and the mask he always wore seemed to drop.
"Ezra!" The angels turned their heads, noticing a young man with sea-green eyes walking towards them. Another smile pulled at Ezra's lips and the angel waved his pudgy arms at the man.
"Your dad?" Gabriel asked. Ezra paused for a moment before nodding.
"Yeahs, mets at a swoup kitchwen," Ezra said, smile growing as he watched his parent come towards them.
"Oh, he works there?" Ezra shook his head and the others grew silent. Oh. Ezra's father finally reached them and knelt down, smiling at the four of them. He had messed up hair that needed a cut and he wore old clothes with holes and a few patches here and there.
"Hey, kiddo!" His eyes turned toward the other three. "More angels? Where-"
"They're mine," Dean said, stepping out from behind the tree, smiling kindly at the man. "Dean," the hunter introduced himself, holding out a hand.
"Dan," Ezra's father said back. He then nodded to Ezra and the others. "I...I take it you know…"
"That they're angels? Yep. In fact, me and my family are helping to make sure these little guys are being cared for," Dean said. "I've got some angel-care stuff in my car. These little guys are a bit high maintenance."
"Are you saying we're a pain in the ass, Dean-o?" Gabriel gasped, mockingly putting a hand over his heart. "That hurts." Dean rolled his eyes at the angel.
Suddenly, Dan picked Ezra up, holding him towards Dean. "Here," Dan practically whispered, holding Ezra away from himself and towards Dean. Silence surrounded them and Ezra's eyes widened in shock, tears burning at his eyes. The sting of rejection swirled through his veins. Dean opened his mouth to question or scold the man, but Dan beat him. "M..my life is nothing to brag about. I do what I have to to make a living, but…" Dan glanced at the angel in his arms. "I'm not good enough for him. He's an angel! He doesn't deserve to be with some guy like me who can barely keep a job." Tears were running down Dan's face then and Ezra was frozen with shock. Cas glanced between the others, waiting for someone to speak up. When they didn't, he did.
"He feels the same about himself," Cas said, looking up at the Ezra's father. Dan looked at Cas in confusion and the angel smiled. "He's a lower ranking angel. The kind nobody knows or really cares about."
"Ouch, bro," Balthazar grumbled. Cas swat Balthy with a wing and continued.
"He thinks his wings are just as simple as his job and...well, maybe that's why our father chose him to be with you." Cas flew up from the ground and pushed Ezra towards the human until Dan pulled the two year old back against his chest.
"You both don't believe you're good enough. Maybe God thought if you two were together you'd see that isn't so true?" Dean guessed, catching on to what Cas was thinking. Castiel nodded and flew into Dean arms. Dan looked at the angel in his own arms, noticing Ezra had shrunk into himself, his wings folded back against himself tightly.
"Oh, Ezzy," Dan chuckled warmly, running a gentle hand through the creamy feathers. "Is that true?" Ezra nodded, wiping a hand over his eyes as tears threatened to fall again. Dan pulled the angel close, wrapping his arms tightly around the angel.
"I don't care what rank you were, Ezzy. I don't care if you think your wings aren't special. You know why Ezra?" Dan pulled Ezra back a little and met his gaze. "I love your wings Ezzy. I love the way they fluff up when you laugh and I love it when you babble songs and dance around with them swinging around you. You are special." Ezra let out a sob and Dan lift the angels chin up with a finger, brushing away a tear with his thumb. "I love you, Ezzy. You're my special, special angel." Ezra let out a soft sob, but a smile appeared on his face as he flung his arms around Dan's neck.
"Wuvs yous too," he cried.
Thank you Kjboulware for the craft and birthday party request. For those of you who might not remember: Ezra was the angel in S9E21 that claimed that he was an 'important' member of Metatron's team. When I watched the episode I felt Ezra was trying to be someone he wasn't so he'd be cool like his other siblings and not just some lower ranked angel that probably pushed papers all day. Thanks for reading!
