Grandad's Angel
Kristen and Siobhan both sat on the couch in Kristen's grandfather's library. They had come home on vacation time to help the old man with the shop. When the girls had shown up Grandpa Churwood had shooed them to the couch and had told them excitedly that he had a surprise for them. The little old man disappeared then, leaving the two girls alone with their thoughts.
"Wonder what your grandpa has for us, Kris?" Siobhan sighed, stretching her arm out over the back of the couch and looping it over her girlfriend's shoulders. "Maybe he made us cookies or something?" Siobhan received no answer and the girl frowned. She glanced down, finding Kristen tapping away at her phone. Siobhan rolled her eyes and snatched the phone away, earning a squeak from her girlfriend. "Who are you cheating on me with?" Siobhan sighed, flicking through the never ending stream of messages. Kristen's cheeks flushed red and she snatched away the phone.
"It's Marie," Kristen admitted. "She says she's switching the play for next year's play." Siobhan frowned.
"Switching it? I thought we all agreed on Wicked?" Kristen shrugged, eyes brightening suddenly.
"She says she's going to switch it to Carver Edlund's book series Supernatural!" Kristen practically squealed.
"Is that the lame book series she gave you to read during first semester that practically turned you into a hermit until you finished?" Siobhan joked. Kristen slapped her arm.
"For your information, yes, and it was one of the best series ever!" Siobhan rolled her eyes again, but before she could continue teasing Kristen gramps rushed out from behind a stack of books. The two's conversation went forgotten and the two stared at the little boy tucked in Grandpa Churwood's arms and a heavy blanket. The little guy had curly hair and big eyes. He was absolutely precious and both girls were instantly off the couch and reaching for him.
"Oh, he's so cute!" Kristen awed. "What's his name? Where'd you get him? Grandpa –"
"Whoa, Babe, give the man some time to talk," Siobhan chuckled. Kristen blushed again and shut her mouth. Churwood took a step back from them then, bouncing the startled child in his arms lightly until the tension eased out of the little guy.
"This is Metatron. I adopted him a while ago," he explained. Metatron raised a hand, waving shyly at the girls.
"Metatron?" Siobhan huffed. "That's a weird name. Bet his parents were drunk off their –"
"Siobhan!" Kristen scolded. "Don't be mean!" Kris turned back to Metatron, smiling at him kindly.
"It's nice to meet you, Meta," she cooed. I'm Kristen and this mean grump is my girlfriend Siobhan." Metatron smiled at her, and uncurled himself from Churwood a little.
"There's something else too," Churwood whispered, face falling and something dark crossing over it. "He's not a normal child, girls." Churwood pulled away the blanket hiding Metatron's body. "He's an angel." Two wings stretched out from between Metatron's shoulder blades and the girls stared in shock at the impossible things.
"Grandpa, wha…"
"Please, Krissy, don't argue about this with me, alright? This is who he is, girls. Please just respect that and don't…don't go telling people about it. He's just a baby and…"
"Gramps, Gramps!" Siobhan shouted, holding up her hands in surrender. "Don't worry about it. We won't do anything that'll hurt the little guy," she promised. "There are some real assholes out there that like to make fun of kids like…well, that are different. We're the last ones that are going to throw him to those packs of wolves." Churwood gave her a thankful smile and held Metatron out towards Kristen.
"I have to go to the store for some more food. The little guy's eating me out of house and home," he chuckled. "Can you girls watch him while I'm out?" Kristen and Siobhan both nodded and Krissy took Metatron, bouncing him in her arms a little when he tried to reach back to her grandfather. Churwood reached out to the angel, ruffling the angel's wings gently. "Just read him a story and he'll be just fine," Churwood told the girls. He took a step towards the door, but paused. "Are…" he turned back around, looking between the two girls carefully. "Are you two sure you're alright with him being…uh…" Siobhan waved off the old man.
"Dude, it's cool. Like we're ones to talk when it comes to weird, right?" Churwood gave her a thankful smile and turned back around, exiting the store. When he was out of sight Siobhan slumped back down onto the couch, staring wide eyed at baby Metatron. "What the hell?!"
"I know," Kristen murmured, staring at the little angel still in her arms.
"Where did your grandpa find this kid? A nuclear plant? Area 51?!"
"Siobhan, he can hear you," Kristen scolded. Siobhan shut her mouth and stared at the little angel that was slowly curling in on himself. She suddenly felt a pain of guilt in her chest for being so inconsiderate of the little guy. He was only a baby and was already getting judged for being a little different. Well, he wasn't a little different. The dude had fucking wings sticking out of him back! They were cool wings though.
"Crap…I'm sorry, dude," Siobhan whispered, getting up from the couch and taking the angel from Krissy. Metatron struggled in her hold, but Siobhan held on tight. "I didn't mean it, okay? I was just being stupid. I'm sorry, Meta." The tension lifted a little and Metatron relaxed in Siobhan's arms. Siobhan smiled and looked to Krissy with a wide smile. Kristen returned the smile and pulled a book from a shelf, taking a seat on the couch. Siobhan followed, setting Metatron in her lap. The angel perked up at the sight of the book, clapping his hands together excitedly.
"Bwook! Bwook!" he squealed. Kristen squealed at the angel's cuteness and hugged at him.
"He's so precious!"
"He sure is," Siobhan laughed. She took the book from Kristen and opened it up. Metatron held out his own hands, setting them over Siobhan's hands so he could help turn the pages of the book. Siobhan began reading, telling a tale of a boy wizard and his two friends in a magical castle. Siobhan gave Kristen a look, but received only a shrug back.
"What? You're never too young for Harry Potter," she stated. "Keep reading." Siobhan did as told, reading each page and blowing raspberries into Metatron's neck when scary moments came up, hoping that would keep away any bad dreams that could result. Siobhan personally still got the creepy crawlies with spiders thanks to her two favorite book series. Why did Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter both have to have ugly ass spiders? Did the authors want to mentally scar their readers?
When book one was finished, Metatron was left wide eyed and Kristen quickly grabbed the next book. This time she read it so Siobhan could get some supper started. While Kristen read, Siobhan rushed upstairs to the kitchen in the house joined onto the library. She found a kettle and started on some pasta, adding tons of cheese and a ton of spices for flavor. Once finished with the pasta she got three bowls made and brought them downstairs. Kristen and Metatron were half way through the second book by then and looked like they were about to spring from their seats in anticipation as the book drew them in. Siobhan laughed at them and slammed their bowls down hard on the table next to the couch. Kristen and Metatron both jumped, almost falling off the couch.
"Isn't she such a meanie, Metty?" Kristen teased, sitting up and setting the book aside. Metatron only lifted his arms towards Siobhan. Well, towards the bowl of food in her hands actually. He clapped his hands together, blabbering in cute little kid gibberish until finally being presented with a bowl of pasta. Together, the three munched happily on the couch, Kristen and Metatron filling Siobhan in on everything that happened so far in the book animatedly. Even though neither of the girls could understand the excited babbling leaving Metatron's lips they still listened, gasping every so often or making a comment. When their bellies were finally full the three snuggled together on the couch again, finishing book after book until they were nearly buried alive by paperbacks and hardcovers.
Mr. Churwood silently entered his library. It was dark out and he had two bags stuffed under each arm from the grocery store. He looked around the dark library, finding the girls and Metatron right where he left them. They were all sprawled out on the couch, a tangle of arms, legs, and feathers. Several books sat in piles on the floor by their sleeping forms. Churwood chuckled and set his bags down on the floor. He walked over to the couch, lifting the sleeping angel from between the two girls and cradling him in his arms. Metatron roused a little because of the suddenly blast of cold air he felt from being pulled from the two bodies and the comfy couch. Churwood draped the blanket from the back of the sofa over the two girls and looked back to Metatron as he carried the baby angel back up to their home upstairs.
"Have fun today?" Churwood asked in a hushed voice. Metatron let out a little hum and snuggled closer to the old man. Churwood took that for a yes and glanced back over his shoulder. He looked over the two girls, whispering a soft goodnight to them before disappearing up the long flight of steps.
