Our Baby Unicorn
What the demons were guarding in a shitty motel room was beyond Sam and Dean's knowledge. All they knew or needed to know was that there were demons two towns too close to where they lived. The two hunters had left when the angels went to bed the other night and were hoping to get home before they woke up for breakfast. They hated leaving the three at home, but they needed to get rid of anything that could threaten their angels.
Sam and Dean tiptoed down the hall of the motel, ruby's knife and their angel blades drawn and ready. When they found the door the demons were hiding out in, the two surrounded it. Sam readied to kick it down and Dean prepared to jump in.
Suddenly, the sounds of a fight could be heard on the other side. The two frowned, but didn't go back on their plan. Sam kicked open the door and the two rushed in, finding several demon meat suits on the ground and two ladies in the room. One was tied to a chair and the other was furiously trying to untie them. Both Sam and Dean lowered their blades, recognizing not just one, but both of the demons.
"Meg?" The one tied to the chair smiled at them, lips split and face covered in cuts and bruises. "Bella?" the one untying Meg finished her job and stood back up straight, smiling at the two Winchesters.
"Long time no see, Boys," she hummed, eyes flicking black for a second before going back to their normal shade. Both brothers warily raised their blades.
"You're a demon?" Dean growled. Bella rolled her eyes at him and helped Meg to her feat.
"The good kind if you'll believe that," she stated. Dean shook his head, lips creased in a sneer.
"Nah, I don't and why should I?"
"Well," Meg hummed, rubbing at the tattered flesh around her wrists. "Bell's been trying to save me since Crowley got me locked up because it turns out me and her share a 'We hate Crowley's guts' thing. Actually, I think your angels could give you another reason themselves." Dean and Sam both frowned. The angels never mentioned meeting Bella. Then again, they never met her so how would they know to mention her? When did they meet her though?
"Alright, so what went down here?" Sam questioned, changing the subject. He was curious, but they needed the angels if they were going to figure anything out on whether Bella was anybody to trust. Meg was already hard to trust at moments, but the angels trusted her and that was enough for both Winchesters even though it sent their skin crawling.
"Crowley's been keeping me on Earth instead of Hell as his prisoner after my little escape act a while back. He's got guards on me 24/7 and they're always moving me around. When we came here Bella finally caught up with the scent and sent those bastards back to hell," Meg explained, nodding at the meatsuits sprawled all over the floor. Sam nodded and looked to Dean. He waved at the other hunter and the two stepped back a few paces to talk silently with each other. Bella and Meg stepped back too, giving them a moment.
"Do we trust them?" Sam asked. Dean shrugged, thinking about the last time they heard about Meg. At the hospital, Balthazar and Gabriel told them how Meg had tried to save them when Cas was getting tortured. Demon or not, Dean was grateful to her for that. Bella on the other hand…he didn't know what to think about her. She was never the most trustworthy person and being a demon was not helping her case, but they had history and if Meg trusted her then hopefully they could too.
Dean nodded at Sam and turned around, looking the two demons up and down.
"We'll take you back home with us," Dean stated. "But…" Dean held up a finger in warning, directing a glare at Bella. "If you hurt our family in any way we will do far worse than kill you." He turned his back then and disappearing through the door.
Sam opened the door and stepped through, holding it open for Meg, Bella, and Dean. Together, they walked into the kitchen and Sam pulled out a first aid kit from a cabinet, setting it in front of the chair Meg had taken a seat in. As he cleaned off the blood covering her skin and wrapped her wounds Bella sat in a chair opposite of Meg, tapping her fingers against the hard wood of the table. Dean watched her, hand over the knife hidden in the inside pocket of his jacket.
The pitter patter of little feet running down the stairs snapped him out of his protective stupor though and Dean turned his head towards the kitchen doorway, watching and smiling as three sleepy angels walked in. They froze when they saw the two demons, mouths dropping open slightly. Meg stared back, but Bella kept herself occupied by tapping at the table. Meg pushed Sam's hands from her and slowly stood up. The angels watched as she walked around the table and knelt down in front of them. She reached out, touching Balthazar and Gabriel's faces lightly before letting her eyes fall completely onto Castiel. The last time she had seen him he was being tortured by Wrath. It was a memory that stuck with her most of her days under Crowley's lock and key, but seeing her unicorn safe and sound helped ease away the terrible image of the angel's broken body and his frightened siblings.
"Clarence –" Castiel barreled into her, wrapping his arms tightly around her neck. Meg startled, but held the little angel back just as tight.
"Hey…" Meg and Cas broke apart, looking over towards Gabriel. The angel was staring at Bella, brow raised. "Aren't you that demon with the old lady meat suit back at the cages with the seven sins?" he questioned. Bella smirked and looked up from watching her fingers drum against the table.
"That's me," she hummed. "I was undercover then though. I was supposed to be helping Meg escape, but when she found out you three were caged up she had me keep an eye on you," Bella explained. "When things got hairy I helped her escape and she went back to help you."
"Well, I tried," Meg added, a sad look in her eye as she said it. Cas brushed at her arm with his wing and she relaxed a little again.
"Why didn't you help?" Dean questioned, his words were sharp and stung like poison. Bella glared at him hatefully.
"I've been a demon since I gave up torture after that damn hellhound pulled me down, Winchester," she growled. "Crowley didn't trust me then and I didn't trust him. The only one I trusted was Meg, but she wasn't always around. I had to work my way through hell's systems to gain the king's respect and 'trust'. If I had revealed myself I would have lost any chance in helping Meg escape. He'd have me locked up too and we'd both still be trapped in hell. I wasn't going to risk that and I had hoped Meg wouldn't either, but…" Bella paused and glanced towards Meg. Gabriel and Balthazar sat on either side of her and Cas was still tucked tightly in her arms. "…I underestimated her feelings towards your angels. I should've never told you about them, Meg. We would've been out of there so much –"
"We're out now," Meg snapped, cutting Bella off. "Who cares what happened along the way." Bella remained silent and Meg stood back up, setting Castiel down and going back to her seat by Sam. Sam grabbed the bandages again and started wrapping.
"Do you know anything about the other angels? The ones that Crowley had caged up?" the younger hunter questioned. Everyone froze, staring at the two demons. Meg shook her head.
"All we know is that he's planning on corrupting them into creating his own little army. That's what all the torture and crap was for, to brainwash them or something," Meg stated.
"We don't know what he did to them though," Bella added. "He had Meg taken away long before he did anything to the angels and I couldn't wait around to see what was going on and risk losing Meg." An uncomfortable silence filled the room. Thoughts littered everyone's mind. What was Crowley building an army for? Did that fiasco with the angels change anything with how Crowley's having the others 'trained'? Where were the angels now?
"How about some breakfast, Angels?" Dean asked, changing the subject. The three nodded and Dean pulled a carton of eggs from the fridge. Gabe and Balthazar flew up onto the counter to help him, but Castiel flew to Meg instead. Dean frowned and glanced over his shoulder at the angel, watching as Cas took the bandage roll from Sam and started working it around Meg's torn up wrist himself. Sam shrugged it off and grabbed another bandage to work on Meg's other wounds. Dean turned back around, swallowing down the weird feeling in his chest and focusing on making sure Gabriel and Balthazar didn't get any shells in the bowl.
When breakfast was finished the rest of the Winchester household came down to join them. Bobby had nearly taken Bella's head off when he saw her, grabbing for a gun hidden in a secret compartment by the trash can. Luckily for Bella, Bobby couldn't shoot with Gabe and Balthazar sitting so close to her. After some explaining and introductions, breakfast went on as usual. Well, as usual as it could with a family of hunters, angels, a hacker, prophet, and two demons.
The angels dashed off to play after breakfast, but instead of grabbing Dean to pull him along, Cas grabbed Meg, tugging her to the living room. The hunter's shoulders slouched and that feeling in his gut came back. Sam and Bella watched the hunter in the corner of their eyes, one smirking and one frowning.
Sam walked into the living room. Cas was there, rubbing at a black feather he had given Meg before she left. Meg was nowhere to be seen, but Sam doubted she was far. She was probably doing something with Gabriel and Balthazar or taking a break from all the attention and play times she's been getting all day. Cas had hardly left Meg's side all day. That wasn't necessarily a problem. The problem was that someone else was getting a lack of attention. Dean was usually the one Cas was glued to. Dean had been in a funk all day. Sam had tried talking to his brother about it, but Dean had just brushed it off. Well, Sam had enough of Dean's moping and if Dean wasn't going to do something then he was.
"Hey, Cas," Sam greeted, walking into the room and taking a seat. Cas looked up at him and stuck the feather into the pocket of his trench coat.
"Hi, Sam," Cas greeted back, lifting his hands up at the hunter. Sam picked him up, setting the angel on his knee. Sam nodded at the feather poking out of Cas' pocket.
"What are you doing with that?" he asked. Cas glanced at his pocket and smiled at the feather.
"Preening it," the angel stated. "I gave it to Meg once and it's been through a few rough patches so I'm taking care of it for her." Sam smiled.
"That's nice of you," Sam told him. Cas reached back into his pocket, preening the feather again and Sam watched. "Cas?"
"Hmm?" Cas hummed. Sam drew in a breath. It was now or never.
"Why have you been giving Meg more attention than Dean lately?" Sam questioned. Cas' eyes widened and he stared at Sam, mouth hanging open.
"What?" Cas questioned. Sam rubbed at the back of his neck.
"Dean's been moping all day, Cas. I think he's…I think he just feels left out because you've been spending so much time with Meg," Sam explained.
"My time with Meg is always short," Cas sighed, looking back to the feather. "She always leaves and I never know if I'll see her again, but Dean…Dean's always there for me. I can count on him to come back. I'm spending all my time with Meg, Sam, because I'm trying to get all I can of her just in case there isn't a next time." Cas paused, suddenly looking sad. "I didn't mean to…"
"Calm down, Clarence," Meg called, walking into the room. The angel and hunter turned, looking to the demon. "It'll be okay."
"Hey, Mr. Grumpy Gills," Bella taunted, walking onto the deck and joining Dean in staring out over the water. Dean glared at her, but didn't say a word. Bella smirked at that and glanced back towards the house. "Oh, or should I call you Mr. Peanut butter and Jealous?" she mused.
"Who's jealous?" Dean grumbled, throwing a flat stone into the water. It fell in with a plop, never getting the chance at skipping through the water. Bella broke out into a loud laugh.
"Oh my father Lucifer! You are such a child!" she cackled. "You're jealous Meg's getting all the attention from your little blue eyed teddy bear." Dean scowled.
"Am n…" He trailed off, glaring at Bella when she gave him a look. "Shut up," he grumbled instead and Bella laughed again.
"Oh this is precious!" she cackled. Dean tried to ignore her, staring intensely at the blue water in front of them. Bella wiped her eyes and patted Dean on the shoulder. "He's got the right to have more than one friend," she told him, more gentle this time with her words, her teasing tone slowly slipping away. Dean's shoulder's slumped and he leaned against his knees with his elbows.
"I know that," Dean sighed. "It's just…I don't know."
"He and Meg went through a lot together. You and Cas have too, but you and Cas were there for each other after. Meg and Cas weren't, Dean. I don't know how Cas was after that fiasco with Wrath, but Meg…she was different. She was angry at herself. She hated herself for not being able to do more. She wanted to make sure your angel was alright, but Crowley had caught her and locked her up again. Meg couldn't hug Cas and know that he was alright. She couldn't do anything and neither could Cas. He didn't know if she was even alive!" Bella let out a puff of air, calming herself down. "Did Cas say anything about Meg?" she questioned. Dean paused. No, Cas never brought Meg up. Cas didn't even say a word about her when he woke up.
"No, he didn't say anything," Dean admitted. Bella nodded.
"Well, he is now," she told him. "He and Meg are getting the moment they didn't get, Dean." Dean nodded and looked back towards the house where they others were. Sighing, he got up.
"Thanks, Bella." The demon shrugged, waving at the hunter to leave her alone and the hunter walked back toward the house. Bella watched him for a moment and the looked back over the water, listening to the wind and the crickets chirping around her.
Dean walked into the living room, finding Cas and Meg playing on the Nintendo. Cas grinned on seeing Dean and ran to the hunter, fluttering up into the air and launching himself into Dean's arms. Dean let out a grunt as the air was smacked from his lungs, but he recovered quickly.
"Dwean, wanna play Mario?" Cas asked happily. "Meg says she doesn't like playing video games, but she likes to watch them and you like to play them," Cas jabbered. Dean laughed at the angel.
"I don't know, Cas. I don't know who this Dwean guy is…" Cas let out a loud sigh, but he wasn't really irritated.
"Dean, please? Please?" the angel asked, saying the hunter's name correctly. Dean grinned at him, ruffling Castiel's hair.
"You're on, Buddy," Dean chuckled. Cas squealed with delight and flew back into Meg's lap. Dean took a seat next to her, glancing at the demon in the corner of his eye as he picked his character. Meg grinned at him, winking knowingly before drawing her gaze back to the TV screen.
