The Goddess and the Vampire
Benny sat in a booth in a diner somewhere in Missouri. A tray of fries sat in front of him, but Benny didn't touch them. He wasn't at the diner for food. He was there to meet someone and she was very late.
Sighing, Benny poked absently at a fry in boredom. The bell above the diner door chimed, but Benny didn't pay any mind to it until a shadow cast over his booth. The vampire frowned and looked up, eyes widening when he found Kali standing over him with one of her typical frowns.
"You're late," Benny commented.
"I was being followed," Kali explained, taking the seat opposite of the vampire. "Two demons have been on my back for days, but I gave them the slip." She looked Benny over, noticing the dark look in his eye. "You've noticed them too, haven't you?" Benny nodded. He noticed them a few weeks ago. He'd been looking into a few places that were whispered to be places for Crowley's 'pets'. In the dark of the streets he had heard the soft patter of feet following close behind him and when he glanced over his shoulder he had seen black eyes. He knew searching for the lost angels was going to be hard, but he never thought Crowley would go as far as having demons stalk him and Kali. Hell, maybe they weren't the only ones. Maybe the other monsters searching were being watched too?
"You tell anybody else this?" he asked.
"No," Kali admitted with a shake of her head. "But we should. I was planning to send word around after this meeting." She picked up a fry from the tray in front of Benny and popped it into her mouth. "Any word from the Winchesters?"
"Yeah, Cas is up and about. They're living at a friend's place while their place is repaired," Benny stated. Dean had called the day he and the others were meant to leave the hospital. He'd told Benny what had happened and asked the vampire to keep his eyes open for the demon. Not too long after Benny got another call from the hunter, but Dean had sounded ten times happier than the last time. That was to blame on his angel. The little tyke had finally woken up. "He hasn't called me with any new information. Nothing's been revealed about Crowley's plan yet," Benny added. Kali nodded and looked out the window near their booth. They sat there silently then and Benny cleared his throat, deciding it was time to leave. He got up, but Kali's hand shot out. Her fingers wound around his wrist and she pulled him back into his seat.
"Look," she whispered. Benny frowned, but turned his gaze to the window. A man was rushing down the street. A baby basket was tucked in his arms and a small note was pinned to it and flapping in the wind. Any normal person wouldn't be able to read the note from so far away, but Kali and Benny weren't normal.
"Rachel," Benny read. "That an angel, yeah?"
"I believe so," Kali commented. She stood from the booth. "Let's check it out." Benny nodded and threw a couple of dollars onto the table before following the goddess. He nodded at the waitress as he and Kali went on their way and disappeared behind the diner door.
"Over there," Benny pointed out just as the man took a turn down the block. He and Kali raced after him, following him to a dark part of town. The man was walking towards a house with the lights dimmed low and weird plants surrounding it. He was just about to ring the doorbell, but Benny grabbed his hand before he had the chance. The man gasped in shock, eyes flicking black in his surprise. Benny grit his teeth together. "Got ya," he hissed, pushing the demon away from the door and pulling the baby basket from his arms. Kali caught the demon before he could run and pinned him to the green grass.
"Wh…what are you doing?" the demon yelped, trying to act innocent. It was pointless though. Benny had seen his eyes. "I'm with foster care. I was just taking this little girl to her new family." Benny glared at the demon and flipped the blanket hiding the little angel back. Rachel was curled up in her blankets. She was dirty from being held in Crowley's cages for so long, but she looked unharmed. She was snoozing away with her tiny wings splayed out. The top of her wings were a dark, almost navy blue. The underside of her wing was similar, but the tips of her feathers were a bright yellow and raspberry.
"She's okay," Benny called to Kali. The goddess nodded, but her deadly grip on the demon didn't loosen. She glared down at him.
"What's Crowley planning to do with the caged angels? Where are you keeping the others?" The demon glowered at her.
"I won't tell you anything, bitch." Kali's eyes darkened and Benny took a seat on the railing of the house.
"Here we go," he hummed to the sleeping angel just as Kali slammed the demon's head back into the dirt and creating a skull shaped crater. "Take it easy on him, sister!" Benny called. "He can't tell us anything if he's dead." Kali flashed him a glare and Benny held up a hand in defeat before turning his attention back to the angel sleeping in her basket. Kali let out a huff and returned her gaze to the dazed looking demon.
"Do I need to repeat myself?" she hissed. The demon stared at her with wide fearful eyes.
"I…I can't tell you! Crowley would…he'd…"
"Whatever Crowley will do to you will be a kindness compared to what I will if you don't tell me where the children are being held captive," Kali growled, her voice like venom. She slammed her fist into his cheek bone. "Where are the angels?!"
"Gone!" the demon screamed. Kali froze and Benny looked up at her and the demon. "Crowley had us move them after the Winchesters' house went down. He had every demon take an angel and sent them away to give them out to bad families."
"Bad families?" Benny questioned. He looked at the house he was perched in front of. He took in a big whiff and several smells hit him at once. He could smell a woman who was practically stitched with anger and hatred. The smell of fear from the people that used to live with her still resided in the house and it made the vampire's skin crawl. "What purpose is there in sending angels to abusive households?"
"Dunno," the demon lied. Kali grabbed his throat, squeezing hard.
"What was that?" she hissed.
"I don't know! Crowley hasn't told us. We just follow his orders!" he screamed. Kali looked over her shoulder at Benny. The vampire nodded and Kali turned her gaze back to the demon beneath her.
"Then you're no use to us." Kali killed the demon with a blast of her own powers and the demon died beneath her. She pressed her fingers to the demon's meat suit's throat. A pulse thrummed beneath her fingers and Kali carefully got off of him. He didn't look injured, but there was no telling what state his mind was in. She looked over at Benny. "I'll call an ambulance to pick him up," she said as the vampire strolled over to her. Benny nodded, stopping by her side. He held up the basket and Kali peaked inside, smiling at the angel within. Rachel was slowly waking up. Her eye lids were fluttering and she was looking tiredly between the goddess and vampire.
"Ma? Pa?" the angel murmured, popping a hand into her mouth. Kali and Benny stared at the angel with wide eyes.
"Huh? Sorry, sweetie," Kali started quickly. "We're not your –"
"Yep, that's me. I'm your papa," Benny interrupted with a shit eating grin. Kali glared at him.
"What are you doing?"
"Hey, she needs a family right?" Benny said with a wide smile. He set the basket down on the ground and picked Rachel up out of it. "I'm as good as any." He winked at the goddess then. "You could be mama." Kali shook her head, but there was no anger in her eyes. Actually, she looked like she liked the idea.
"It's too dangerous. We're being followed remember?" Benny nodded.
"I know," he hummed. "Where else would we take her though? The Winchesters have enough on their plates. I know they told us to call if we found any angels, but…" Benny shrugged and smiled at the sleepy angel in his arms. "I think she'll be okay with me for at least a little while. I can always take her to my granddaughter if things get sketchy." Kali watched as Benny rubbed a few feathers between his fingers. There was no getting through to the vampire. He was lost to the little girl in his arms.
"Fine," Kali sighed. "But if anything happens to her I'll chop your head off myself." Benny laughed at that and tucked Rachel into his coat so she was warm.
"See you around, sister," he called. Kali watched him disappear down the sidewalk and let out a small sigh. She looked back at the house the demon had planned on forcing Rachel to live in. A scowl coiled across her face and she pulled out her phone. First she'd call an ambulance for the man knocked out by her feet. Then she'd call the other monsters in the area. Crowley was planning on something and they needed to save the angels in his hold before they were too late and already drowning in whatever horrors he had planned.
