The Bunker
"Holy Hobbits!" Charlie shouted through the phone receiver. "Guys I'm so sorry. I wish I would have been there…"
"There was nothing you could have done, Charlie," Sam reassured.
"It still doesn't make me feel better," Charlie sighed. "So now we've got demons to hunt for too?"
"Yeah, but Lydia said this place the men of letters had should make everything easier."
"Well, Lila and I are on our way over to help. I'll see you guys tomorrow morning, okay?"
"Okay, see you." Dean hung up the phone then and put his focus back on the road ahead. The car was packed. He and Sam sat in the front while Gabriel, Balthazar, Castiel, Crowley, and Abaddon sat in the back. Bobby and Kevin road in the old pick up behind them. They were all on their way to see the place Abaddon couldn't wait to get her hands on. It was probably a bad idea to bring her and Crowley along, but they were two year olds now and stripped of all their power. They were just as dangerous as the angels. They were also just as annoying.
"OUCH! Stop pulling at my feathers!" Gabriel screamed, smacking both Abaddon and Crowley over the head with his golden wings. The demons yelped, ducking their heads. Gabe's mere smacks didn't do much to stop them though. Instead they pulled at his brothers' wings. Crowley yanked at Cas' while Abaddon yanked on Balthazar's.
"How can God think this is a good idea?" Sam grumbled, turning around in his seat and reaching into the back seat. Dean glanced into the mirror, watching as his brother pulled the demons' hands away from the angels.
"He's God, Sammy."
Sam sat back in his seat, glaring daggers at Abaddon and Crowley in the mirror. Dean just rolled his eyes and focused back on the road and the large building surrounded by trees coming into view. Dean pulled off the main road and journeyed onto an older road that had clearly not been driven on in a long while.
After a few turns and twists, the Impala and Bobby's pickup finally pulled up to the abandoned building the note had led them too. They all piled out of the car and looked to the heavy set of doors nearby. Bobby let out a low whistle and scooped Crowley and Abaddon into his arms.
"When's the last time somebody was in this place?" Dean pondered, walking up to the door with Sam by his side and Bobby and Kevin trailing behind with the angels and demons in hand.
"65, 70 years ago?" Sam guessed. He pressed his fingers against a key hole in the door, running his finger across it carefully. He looked to Dean and the hunter pulled the box they had taken from Henry from his pocket. Dean opened it, finding a key inside. It was a normal looking key one would likely have seen 65 or 70 years ago. What separated the key in Dean's hands from others was the marking on the handle. It was there that a six pointed star was etched carefully into the metal.
The door swung open when Dean turned the key inside the lock. Darkness waited for them ahead, but the Winchesters and their family trudged on. Flashlights beamed through the dark as they walked farther into the dark building. A railing could be seen up ahead and they realized that there was more than one floor. Dean shined his light downward while Sam shined his at a set of stairs.
"Son of a bitch," Dean commented as he let his flashlight travel through the dark. Dean's light bounced off several old machines on the lower floor. A ham radio, telegraph, and switchboard were only a few of the many. "Look at this."
"This was their nerve center," Sam realized as he carefully took the stairs down to the lower floor.
"Henry did say that they ran dispatch on their own team of hunters," Dean recalled.
"Dwean, it's too dark," Cas whimpered, hugging at Kevin tightly. Dean turned, pulling the angel from Kevin and maneuvering the angel so he was settled in his arms. "It's okay, buddy," Dean whispered. He handed Cas the flashlight. Cas took it and pointed the light around. He focused the beam on a table nearby. A chess game sat on top the table along with a cup of coffee.
"Halfway through their coffee and a game of chess…looks like whoever was manning the hub left quick," Dean said, picking up the cup of coffee and inspecting it. He set it down and followed the beam of light as Cas shown it at something on the wall. It was a circuit breaker. Dean walked over and pulled the door open. He pulled a lever upwards and it sparked as power began pumping for the first time in years. The generator whirled loudly and lights slowly flickered on until the entire place was lit up.
"Son of a bitch," Sam gasped in awe as the darkness was chased away. He walked a little ahead and chuckled as he stepped into the doorway of what looked to be a giant library. The walls were covered in book cases and filing cabinets. Peeking out from a room past the long tables centered in the library was a giant telescope. Dean made his way down the stairs and stepped up beside his brother.
"Sammy, I think we found the bat cave," Dean gasped.
Kevin joined them, walking past and twirling around the giant library.
"This place is…is..."
"Biggy," Crowley finished for Kevin. He frowned at himself at the strange way the word had come from his mouth. He tried saying it again, but it kept coming out the same.
"Stop it before you hurt yourself," Bobby warned the demon in his arms. Crowley huffed, but went quiet and stuck his tongue out at a snickering Abaddon.
"So…what now?" Kevin questioned.
"Explore?" Gabe suggested. "We're staying here until Charlie and Lila come over anyway, right?"
"Yeah, yeah," Sam agreed. "Might as well find some beds to crash in too."
"Stay together though," Bobby pushed. "We don't know what these guys hid in here." Everyone nodded in agreement and split up. Dean and the angels went down one direction, weaving down a long corridor. There were doors that ran all the way down, each leading somewhere new.
"Okay," Dean said, looking at the angels padding along the floor by his feet. "Our mission is to find some beds, alright?" The angels nodded and Balthazar rushed over to a nearby door. He turned his hand and the door slowly eased open. He peaked inside.
"Kitchen," he revealed, stepping to the side so the others could see. A small table was pushed up against a wall beneath a clock and stretch of tackboard. Along the wall to the right of the door was a table complete with coffee maker.
"Sweet," Dean said, stepping inside and inspecting some of the food packed up along the shelves. Everything was canned or boxed up. Thankfully, Dean couldn't spot any rotting food sitting around. That was at least one less mess to clean up.
Dean stepped out of the kitchen, meeting the angels back in the hallway. He shut the door and waved at the angels to find another door. The angels scurried ahead, searching for another doorway to explore. They curved down hall after hall and Dean was starting to wonder how big the place really was. He glanced behind himself, wondering if he should have tied a string to something to help find their way back to the library.
Dean followed the angels around another corner, nearly tripping over the three. They had stopped and were staring up curiously at a door with the number eleven etched onto it. Gabriel waved his hand at the handle and the door slowly creaked open. The four peaked inside, grinning ear to ear. They had found their first bedroom. Dean pulled out his phone, dialing in Sam's number. It rang only once before Sam finally picked up.
"Dean –"
"Room 11 is mine and the angels' room. We call it," Dean stated. "Also…we have a kitchen."
"We also have a dungeon," Sam revealed. "Kevin, Crowley, and Abaddon were snooping around an archive room when the shelves suddenly moved. The place has a huge devils trap and everything. Oh –and Bobby found a shooting range."
"Man this place is awesome," Dean said excitedly, watching the angels jump up and down on the memory foam mattress in the room. "Too bad we've already started building the house back up. This place would've been perfect." Dean took a seat on the bed, falling back against the soft mattress and pillows.
"It's not a home, Dean. It's a secret headquarters," Sam reminded his brother. "A secret headquarters that is supposed to help us with our angel and demon problem." Dean groaned, draping a hand over his eyes. Why did Sammy always have to be a downer?
"Yeah, I know," Dean sighed. He glanced over to his right, finding that the angels were snuggling against the pillows. "Gotta go put the kids to bed. See you in the morning, little bro. Good luck finding a bed."
"Night, Jerk."
"Bitch."
Dean hung up the phone. He smiled at the sleepy angels and stoked a hand through their feathers. He pulled his hand back. "Ick. You three need a bath," he revealed. "You're wings are all greasy."
"Mmm, wanna sleep," Cas moaned into the pillow he and his brothers were curled up around. Dean chuckled and tickled the angel's sides. Cas squealed, squirming and beating his wings against Dean's assaulting hands.
"You can sleep…" Dean hummed, scooping the angel into his arms. "…after we hunt down a bathroom." Dean sat up in the bed with Cas in his arms and stood to his feet. Gabriel and Balthazar reluctantly pulled back from the comfy mattress and pillows. They flew to Dean shoulders and the hunter carried them out of the bedroom. They started down the halls again, opening doors and peaking inside. They found storage rooms and bedrooms, but after twenty minutes of searching they found a shower room of all things.
"Well, it's not a bath, but it'll work," Dean hummed. He walked over to one of the showers and peaked inside. The showers were all separated by white tiled walls and light grey shower curtains. "Wonder if they've got any soap for your wings lying around," Dean hummed. He walked over to a basket near a long mirror that ran down the opposite wall of the one the showers were. A counter complete with several sinks hung beneath the mirror. Dean opened the cabinets attached to the counter, finding soft towels, robes, and strange kinds of barred soap. Dean picked up a bar and sniffed it. It smelt like baby shampoo mixed with lemon. He held it up for the angels to see. "We're in business," he called, closing the cabinet and padding over to the angels waiting by the first shower. Dean helped them strip down and turned on the shower head. He stuck a hand beneath the spray and hummed appreciably at the warmth. The angels ducked under the spray of water when Dean gave them the go ahead. Their eyes rolled back and they practically purred. "Nice, huh?"
"You should really call the people building our house and have them install a few of these into the house," Gabe purred. Dean laughed and rubbed the bar of soap against his hands until suds covered his hands. He worked through the angels' feathers, starting with Gabriel's and working his way to Balthazar and Castiel's. He rinsed the suds from their wings and then rubbed more soap in his hands so he could get through their hair. When he finished with their hair he rinsed the three off and turned the water off. Dean threw the fluffy towels from the cabinet drawers over the angels and dried them all off.
"All done," Dean said, wrapping the towels around the angels. "Let's find some pajamas." Dean pushed up from his crouch and walked to the door leading out of the shower room. The angels followed him to room eleven and plopped down on the bed. They watched Dean dig through the drawers in the bedroom and the hunter let out a happy cheer as he held up three T-shirts. He handed them over to the angels and the three threw them on. The shirts were huge on the angels. They slipped off the three's shoulders and rand down to their ankles, but they would do for the night.
Dean pulled back the covers of the bed and the angels climbed in, curling close together and draping their wings over each other.
"I'm gonna go shower," Dean whispered. "You three sleep tight." The angels nodded tiredly and Dean brushed a hand carefully through each angel's hair before pulling back. He turned off the light, but kept the door open a crack to let the hall light in. He made his way back to the shower room and stripped down. He turned the water on and stepped into the steady stream. His eyes rolled back. He was definitely calling the contractor later about new shower heads.
So this chapter has a little bit of dialogue from Everybody Hates Hitler mixed in with it. Next chapter will have bits and pieces from that episode too along with the ever wonderful Charlie and Lila.
