Happy Anniversary
Dean shifted on his feet as he stood outside his bedroom door. He took a deep breath and clasped his free hand over the handle. The door clicked open when he turned it. Dean peaked inside, finding Cas sitting on a pillow. The little angel had The Wonderful Wizard of Oz propped open in front of him and his trench coat thrown over his legs like a makeshift blanket. Cas looked up from his reading and smiled widely at the hunter peaking inside.
"Hello, Dwean!"
"Hey, buddy," Dean greeted back. He stepped into the room, keeping one hand behind his back and out of Castiel's line of sight. He took a seat on the edge of the bed and Cas wiggled into his lap, wings fluffing happily. "How's Oz?" Dean asked, glancing at the forgotten book sitting on the pillow Cas had once been.
"Inaccurate," Castiel said with a shrug. "Oz is a much darker place than written."
"Well, it is a children's book," Dean reminded, raising a brow at the angel. "I suppose they had to alter some things. What? Did the flying monkeys eat Toto or something?" Castiel didn't answer. Instead the angel's eyes skimmed over to where Dean was hiding his right hand. Cas' brows pinched together.
"What's that?"
"It's…uh…" Dean let out a breath and met Cas' blue gaze. "Cas?"
"Yes?"
"Do you know what day it is?"
"I believe it is the eighteenth," Castiel stated simply. He nodded at the calendar pinned on the wall to prove his point. Dean groaned and shook his head.
"No, Cas, that's not what I meant." He pulled his hand out from behind his back and Castiel's eyes popped open wide. In the center of Dean's palm sat a cupcake. It wasn't any cupcake. It was one of Dean's own creations. The cupcake itself was peanut butter flavored. Strawberry jelly was spread lightly over the top like frosting and a candle in the shape of a seven sat on top.
"Dwean, wha –"
"Happy anniversary, Cas." Dean set the cupcake into Castiel's hands. "It's been…oh…six years?"
"Seven," Cas corrected.
"Seven," Dean repeated. He thought back to that night in the barn. Even now he could still vividly picture it. He could hear the barn creaking and see the lights sparking brightly as Cas stepped into the barn. Dean could still see the stoic angel that eventually became part of his family walking towards him, not even flinching as he was pelted with every bullet Dean and Bobby could shoot. Seven years. It was so long ago, but at the same time it felt like almost yesterday.
Castiel tugged at Dean's shirt and the hunter looked down. His angel smiled, eyes flicking down at the peanut butter and jelly cupcake in his hands and back to Dean. He held it back up to the hunter.
"Want to share?" Dean nodded, taking the cupcake back. He split it down the middle, keeping one side for himself and giving the other to the angel that had pulled him from hell exactly seven years ago. The two dug in, gobbling down the homemade cupcake until only the candle was left.
"I'm glad I made more of those," Dean hummed around the fingers he was sucking clean of jelly. He pulled his fingers back from his mouth and wiped them on his shirt before falling back against the bed. "Damn those were good."
"Really good," Castiel agreed, plopping down on Dean's chest. He fluffed his wings out and over his head so they tickled Dean's cheek. The hunter laughed, earning a smile from the angel on top of him. Cas' right wing drifted down, tickling at the hunter's neck. Dean's eyes widened and he arched beneath the angel, laughing heartily now.
"Cas! No! ghahaha!" Stoahahahop!" the hunter cackled as his angel attacked his neck with light feathers. Cas' fingers got involved then. They dug into Dean's ribs, making him squirm and squeal. Castiel was so distracted by Dean's red, smiling face that he didn't notice the two large hands sneaking their way towards him before it was too late.
Cas yelped in surprise when Dean grabbed him and tossed him into the air. Dean caught him when he fell downward and attacked the angel's wings and feet. Cas screamed, kicking and laughing as the hunter tickled him. Tears streamed down his red cheeks. Dean was relentless in his attacks, but he was only human and tickle fights took a lot out of a person. Dean's fingers slowly stilled and his grip on Castiel loosened. He closed his eyes, focusing on balancing out his breathing. Castiel climbed higher up on Dean's chest and sprawled out, muscles twitching every so often.
"Happy anniversary, Dean," Cas hummed once he had calmed down enough to speak. He snuggled against the hunter's neck and lifted his wings up so they hugged at Dean's shoulders. Dean placed a hand between Cas' shoulder blades, rubbing gently as he held the angel close. His stomach growled and he looked down at it along with Cas. He looked back up at the angel and gave him a wide smile.
"I guess I worked up an appetite," he stated. "Wanna go grab another peanut butter and jelly cupcake?" Cas bobbed his head in answer and Dean rocked forward on the bed, sitting up slowly. He set his feet on the floor and stood, walking to the doorway with Cas in his arms.
Happy 7 Year Anniversary, Dean and Castiel!
