Dangers of Trust
"How's he doing?" Jane questioned. She was standing in the back room of the restaurant she worked at with her phone clasped to her ear. It felt like she'd been gone from home for days, but it had only been a few hours.
"Oh, he's doing fine," the new babysitter hummed through the phone. Jane had only hired him a few weeks ago after finally managing to find a job at the restaurant she now stood in. "He misses his mom of course." There was a loud noise from the other side of the phone met with soft whispers then before the babysitter spoke again. "He wants to talk to you." Jane listened to the muffled sound of the phone being passed and a smaller, slurred voice thumbed through the speakers.
"Hi, Mama!" the little voice called through the phone. A smile eased over her lips and she grinned into the phone.
"Hi, baby. You okay?"
"Uh huh. When you home?"
"In a little bit, honey. My shift is almost over –" Jane turned, eyes falling on one of the waitresses she worked with. The waitress pointed at a table outside the restaurant where two men and three little boys sat. Jane let out a long sigh and held up a finger to her coworker before turning her attention back to the phone in her hand. "I have to go now. Bye, sweet pee." She hung up then and smiled sadly down at her phone before quickly pocketing it and racing outside to her table. The faster she took care of this table the faster she'd get home.
She hurried over to the table, brushing her reddish-brown hair out of her face before she reached the table.
"Hi, I'm Jane. Can I take your order?" she said with a wide grin. The larger of the two men startled and looked up at her. His twiddling thumbs slowed and he dropped his hands from the table into his lap. He grinned and pointed at the pancake section on the menu while staring up into her blue-green eyes.
"Sure, I'll have a stack of pancakes with extra crispy bacon on the side," he started. Jane wrote down the man's order quickly and looked up at the boy next to him. She froze instantly, pen falling out of her hand and landing with a loud tap against the restaurant floor. The Asian boy sitting between the two out of the three boys bent over, grabbing the pen from the floor. He held it out to Jane, but she didn't take it from him. She continued to stare at the bright eyed boy, eyes flicking to the other two too.
"Miss?" the Asian boy questioned nervously. His eyes flicked over to the larger man at the table. Jane's did too, picking up the way the man was reaching for something in his back pocket. "Are you alright?" Jane startled from her thoughts and grabbed the pen she'd dropped quickly from the Asian boy.
"Sorry, I…I…I'll be right back." Jane turned on her heals then, rushing towards the back of the restaurant. She didn't go to the kitchen though. Instead, she slipped out the back door. She couldn't believe it. Those three little boys weren't little boys at all. They were angels. She could see their grace coiling beneath the skin of the vessels they rode. Their grace wasn't as bright as the few Jane had the misfortune to see. Week grace or not though, those three were dangerous and Jane couldn't afford to lose her life with a little one at home.
"Hey!" boomed a voice from behind Jane as she ran down the alley connected to the restaurant. She turned her head, eyes falling on the men from before right on her heals. In the air above them were the angels. Their wings were visible, each flapping loudly in the wind. Jane picked up her speed, but it wasn't enough. She turned the wrong way and boxed herself into a dead end. She turned around, facing the five figures before her. She had no choice now. She had to fight.
"Alright," she growled through her teeth. "Let's do this." The five in front of her stared at her in confusion.
"Uh…do what?" the Asian boy questioned.
"Fight!" Jane shouted. "I'm not going to just roll over and let you slay me if that's what you think."
"Slay? We're not slaying anyone," the boy stated.
"Then what do you want?"
"We want to talk," one of the angels jumped in. Jane looked him up and down. He had a stronger grace than the others, marking him clearly as an archangel. "We're on a mission."
"Yeah, we had a vision that one of our siblings was in the area," another joined in.
"What are you saying?"
"Well you are half angel so…"
"Wait, what?" the larger man in the company questioned. "Half angel?" The archangel nodded.
"Half angels are also called Nephilim. They're not exactly liked upstairs though. We like to keep any information about their existence quiet." Jane scoffed at the archangel's understatement.
"Wait," the Asian boy started, holding up a hand. "If she's half angel she's still an angel. Why didn't she de-age too?" Jane raised a brow and looked to the three angels. De-age, huh? That would explain the tiny angels. It wasn't odd for angels to take children for their vessels, but it was preferred that vessels were full grown and strong.
Jane looked down at her own body. She didn't always look like she just graduated high school. Unlike the three angels in the alley, she did not get turned into a toddler. She sure as hell got knocked down a few years though. She glanced back at the restaurant. "Luckily I didn't de-age any more than this," she murmured to herself, thinking she was still speaking in her head. "How else am I supposed to support two?"
"Two?" the angels each questioned. Jane paled and her lips creased into a thin line.
"I…uh…it's nothing. I have a dog."
"You're lying," the blond angel with blue eyes stated simply. Jane looked between the men and angels surrounding her. She felt like a caged rabbit as they stared into her, searching for the answer to their question. The big guy was really making her nervous though. His bright green eyes were boring into her and unraveling each seem that held her together. After a minute or two though his shoulders slumped and he stared at her in understanding.
"You've got a kid." Jane could hear the understanding in his voice, but she pushed the thought back quickly.
"What's their name?" one of the angels asked. Jane kept quiet. The little angel didn't seem upset though. He just smiled and flew over to Jane, holding his hand out.
"My name's Castiel," he introduced. He turned his head, nodding at the other behind him. "That's Gabriel, Balthazar, Kevin, and Dean. They're my family. Who's yours?"
Jane chewed at her lips as she stared into bright blue eyes. She tried to sense the danger she usually did when around other angels, but she didn't feel any of that while standing in the alley.
"Inias," Jane found herself whispering. Castiel's eyes grew large and Jane suddenly feared that she'd made a huge mistake in trusting the small angel.
"I swear that he's full angel," she started. Even if she did win in a fight against the three small angels and their humans she couldn't risk Inias being known as a Nephilim. The angels would hunt him just like they did her. She couldn't let him live that way. "I know I'm only part angel and that for some reason that means I have to die, but please…please don't kill Inias." Her eyes were glistening now with unshed tears.
"We don't care what he is," Gabriel started. "And we don't care what you are either." Jane's eyes widened in shock and disbelief by the archangel's words. "We're not here to hurt anyone."
"Gabe's right," Kevin joined in. "We're here to help."
"Help?" Jane sputtered. "Your kind has never helped me before."
"We are now," Balthazar urged. He waved a hand at himself and his brothers. "Do you believe us?" Jane licked her lips, looking each angel up and down. She didn't know what to believe. She'd been around long enough to know that angels could be manipulative when they wanted something. It didn't feel like the angels were doing that to her now though.
Balthazar spoke up again after he sat several minutes without an answer. Jane blinked up at the angel and he let out a heavy sigh.
"We can show you if you want," he started. "We can prove you can trust us."
"How?"
"Inias," Castiel joined in. "Let us see him." Jane's entire body tensed and her eyes darkened.
"I'm not taking you to my home," Jane growled. "I don't need you guys knowing where I live and I'm not endangering Inias."
"Understood," Dean stated with a nod like he really did know how she felt. "We can meet somewhere else. We're staying at –"
"No," Jane interrupted, glare zeroing in on Dean. "No, if we're doing this I'm planning where we meet." Dean sighed, but nodded. Jane nodded back and quickly thought of a place she knew she'd be safe. "There is a park across the street from the bakery two blocks down from the restaurant." The two humans and three angels nodded. "I'll meet you there with Inias tomorrow at 2:00." Again the five nodded.
"Okay," Dean said. He looked to the others and then Jane. "We'll get going then." He picked up Castiel and Gabriel while Kevin picked up Balthazar. He smiled at Jane before turning his back and in a matter of minutes Jane was left alone. The Nephilim's legs buckled beneath her and her body slumped against the ground. Her heart pounded hard in her chest and tears burned in her eyes. She let out a silent plea into the night, praying that she hadn't ruined whatever chance at a safe life that Inias and she had.
