Pen Pals
It was humid in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Victor Merrill was tapping away on his computer with a small fan blowing in his face. Usually he would use the bigger one, but his adopted daughter Adina was using the other as she slept in the other room. That was fine though. Victor was used to the heat, but poor little Adina was still adjusting to it all.
Victor was just scrolling through his email when his computer let out a small ding. He looked up from the email he'd been reading and looked to the little bubble indicating he had a new chat message. Quickly, Victor tapped at it, grinning when he saw it was from his Egyptian pen pal.
Unread Messages (1):
AzizaL: Hey, you up?
Victor grinned at the short message and quickly typed back to his old friend.
Message sent at 12:25:
VicM86: Yep, just put Adina to bed.
AzizaL: Daniel's in bed too. Poor baby's been having some trouble sleeping.
VicM86: :( nightmares?
AzizaL: I'm not really sure. I think it's all the noise from the streets he's not used to.
VicM86: Aw…poor guy. Adina isn't completely used to noise either, but we're taking a little business trip to America soon so hopefully we'll find some quiet there.
AzizaL: America?
VicM86: My twin brother lives there and is going to be having a baby soon. I wanted to be there for them when it happens.
AzizaL: How sweet. Daniel and I are going to America too! Kansas to be exact. My father there and he sent us tickets to come visit him since he hasn't gotten to meet Daniel face to face yet.
VicM86: u wouldn't happen to be going to Lebanon, Kansas would u?
AzizaL: Uh…yes, but how did u know?
VicM86: That's where the hospital my brother and sister in law will be having their baby.
AzizaL: u want to meet up?
VicM86: I'd love too.
AzizaL: I can give u the address to my dad's if that's ok?
VicM86: Perfect :)
Victor leaned back from his computer with a wide smile on his face. Aziza and he had been pen pals since a project at their school. Their teachers had come in with lists of students from all over the world that they could write to and by some strange luck both Aziza and Victor and chosen each other. Maybe it was fate for them to be best friends or something like that? Either way, the two soon became close friends that itched to be face to face for once. Now they were finally getting their big chance.
"Da! Da!" Victor looked up from his computer on hearing the shouts from his room and quickly got up. He hurried to his bedroom, finding little Adina sitting up in bed. Her soft blue wings with fiery amber tips and veins were fluffed up behind her.
"You okay, Baby?" Victor questioned. He sat down on the bed and opened his arms up for the little angel to crawl into. She nodded and wrapped her wings around him instead of her arms.
"Wokes up, but you gone," she said softly. Victor ran a hand through her blond curls and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
"Sorry, Baby, I was just talking to a friend."
Aziza had been to America a few times before in the past so the trip to Kansas had gone smoothly. When she did have questions the people she asked were mostly kind and helpful. Sure, she received a few odd looks as she walked through the airport at times, but Aziza just pulled her head scarf tighter around herself and kept walking with Daniel tucked in her arms. It had taken a while, but eventually they found their luggage and rental car and started their long drive to Aziza's father's home.
"Aziza!" her father cried when the two finally pulled into the driveway. An old man hobbled out onto the porch with open arms. With Daniel in her arms Aziza ran to him.
"Hey, Dad," Aziza greeted, hugging her Dad tight as he planted a kiss to her forehead. She held up Daniel a little higher when she pulled back and her father smiled down at the little boy. Daniel's jacket had slipped down from his shoulders a little, making his fluffy wings visible. The top side was a bright blue mixed with vibrant shades of green while the underside was a soft yellow. Daniel giggled when his grandpa tickled a few feathers fondly before kissing the angel's forehead.
"Nice to meet you, Daniel." He pulled back then and opened the door for his daughter and grandson. They stepped in, Aziza heading right for the coffee pot waiting in the kitchen. Her father shut the door behind him, but glared out the window of it when he heard a loud rumbling from outside. A sleek, black Chevy Impala roared down the street and past his house. He let out a string of curses as he left the window and came into the kitchen where his daughter and grandson waited for him.
"What's the matter, Dad?" Aziza questioned as she pulled two mugs from the cabinet above the coffee pot.
"That Impala's been roaring down this street all day," Aziza's father huffed in answer. "Don't those kids have better things to do than disturb the peace? Where's a cop when you need one? That boy needs a muffler on that damn contraption."
"Dad, calm down," Aziza hushed as she poured her old man a coffee. "Maybe the owners are from out of town and don't know where they are going."
"Well, they should stop and ask someone then," he grumbled before taking a seat in his chair. "Anyway…when is your friend stopping by?"
"He was going to visit his brother first and then come by so…he should be here soon enough." Her father nodded and then looked to Daniel again. The little boy was currently stretching out his wings, clearly happy to no longer have them covered. "Does he know about…"
"Yeah," Aziza stated while her father motioned towards Daniel's wings. "His daughter has wings too." Her father's eyes widened at that, but Aziza only shrugged. Sure, it had been odd when they both sent messages on the same day that they had both adopted kids. When they both revealed too that their kids had wings that had seemed even stranger, but the two just brushed it aside and filed it under the list of things fate has done to join them closer to one another from such a great distance.
"What's the little one's name?" Aziza's father asked.
"Adina," Aziza revealed. "Oh, Dad, wait till you see her. She's got the most gorgeous blond curls. Oh! And her wings—"
"My wings cooler!" Daniel huffed, puffing his wings out and making himself and the fluffy appendages look better. Both Aziza and her father broke into laughter and the little angel grinned at them, not really understanding why they were laughing, but still feeling happy to be the one that caused their loud laughter.
As the laughter began to die down, the sound of a car running caught everyone's attention. It wasn't the loud hum of the annoying Impala like before. This time was different. The car didn't rumble as loud and it sounded like it was practically outside their door instead of plowing past the house.
Aziza hurried to the window on the front door after leaving the kitchen. A grin stretched ear to ear across her face as a man with black skin and a red T-shirt got out of the car now parked in her father's driveway beside her own rental car. The man ran a hand through his short, wiry hair and then approached the passenger seat of his car. He opened the door and a few seconds later pulled out a girl with blond hair and fluffed up wings.
Victor crawled out of his car with Adina tucked in his arms. He sent out a hopeful prayer that he'd found the right place, but he knew it had to be when Aziza's smiling face appeared from behind the front door of the white house he had parked in front of.
"Aziza!" he cried, hurrying up onto the porch with Adina in his arms. Aziza hugged him when he was in reaching distance and the two laughed against each other's shoulders as they embraced, blubbering back and forth greetings. It felt so odd to see each other face to face instead of just the blurry image from Skype and the two absolutely loved it.
"Are you two going to stand there all day or are you going to come in?!" Aziza's father shouted from inside the house. Aziza laughed and tugged Victor and Adina inside, leading them to the kitchen where her father was waiting with a big smile on his face. He held out a hand to Victor.
"I've heard a lot about you Victor. I'm Aziza's father Dimitri."
"It's good to meet you too, Mr. Loren," Victor said back while shaking the old man's hand. He raised a brow at Aziza then. "So you talk about me a lot?" he asked teasingly. Aziza slapped him fondly and then took Adina from his arms. She smiled at the little girl with a wide grin.
"Hey, Addy, remember me?" she questioned. Adina tilted her head and pointed a finger right at Aziza's nose.
"Compooter lady," she realized. Aziza laughed at the nick name.
"Yep, that's me. He'd do you want to meet someone awesome?" Adina nodded in answer and Aziza carried the little girl to where Daniel was sitting. She set Adina down in front of her son then and the two stared at each other with big eyes.
"Adina, this is Daniel. Daniel, this is Adina."
The two stared at each other for a long moment before spreading their wings and hugging each other with the colorful appendages. A string of giggles made it past the two's lips and both Aziza and Victor watched them with big smiles plastered on their faces.
"Best friends at first sight," Victor mused. He elbowed Aziza gently in the ribs. "Just like us."
Aziza and Victor watched from the porch as their kids played on the front lawn. Adina and Daniel were tossing a ball back and forth, playing with each other like the best friends they had quickly become.
The little orange ball that Adina was holding was thrown into the air right after she caught it. It went higher than the other times and zoomed over Daniel's head as the wind caught it. In a matter of seconds the ball was sailing across the road. Victor slowly rose to his feet to go get it for the two, but he was too late. Daniel had already pushed up onto his feet in a blink of an eye and was pattering across the lawn and onto the road. Adina called out to him to stop and come back, but the little boy just kept going until he was halfway across the road. The rumbling of an Impala's engine and the screeching of tires suddenly made the moment ten times more frightening. Adina and Victor both watched in terror as the Impala swerved and screeched in attempt to slow down before reaching the fear frozen boy.
"Daniel!" Aziza cried. She shot up and practically leapt over the porch in attempt to get to her baby faster. It was a sad attempt. There was no way she could get to Daniel in time thanks to how fast everything was happening and how far away she was. Still, she tried and so did Victor. The two ran for Daniel, breath catching in their throats as the Impala finally came to a stop several inches away from Daniel's shaking body. Relief washed over the two, but they didn't stop running. They didn't even slow down when they reached Adina. Victor just whisked her up quickly into his arms and continued to follow Adina.
Two men were out of the black Chevy in seconds. The driver was a tall man with sandy brown hair and bright green eyes. His passenger was even taller and had long brown hair that almost touched his shoulders. The two knelt down beside a frightened Daniel, asking frantically if he was okay.
"Daniel!" Aziza cried again as she pushed past the bigger of the two men to reach her son. She wrapped her arms around him, holding him tight as tears spilled past her eyes. "Don't you ever do that again!" she cried. Daniel let out a loud sob and clung to her, letting out shuttered apologies as he cried.
"Is he alright?" the taller of the two men questioned.
"I think so," Victor said for Aziza. "Just shaken up."
"Listen, I'm real sorry, man. I—"
"Hey, it isn't your fault. Daniel shouldn't have run across the street like that," Victor stated before the shorter of the two could finish. He held out his hand. "I'm Victor by the way. This is my daughter Adina, my friend Aziza, and her son Daniel."
"Sam," the taller greeted.
"Dean," the driver of the Impala said back, but his eyes were still on the sobbing angel in Aziza's arms. It wasn't the same, terrified and guilt-ridden look he had stared at the boy with before. This time he had a look of shock and relief mixed in his bright green eyes. His gaze was focused on Daniel's back too instead of the boy's face. Victor curiously followed the driver's gaze, realizing the guy was zeroing in on where the coat had fallen a little off Daniel's shoulders. Victor's eyes widened when he realized the boy's wings were visible. He opened his mouth to explain, but Dean was suddenly shouting something at the car, calling out for someone. Three little boys pushed themselves from the back seats of the Impala then and hesitantly made their way to Sam and Dean's sides. The three stared at Daniel and then Adina, looking right through the two like they could see into their souls. The three unzipped their heavy coats then and both Aziza and Victor gasped when gold, silver, and black wings were suddenly released for all eyes to see.
"Wha—"
"This is Gabriel, Balthazar, and Castiel," Sam said, pointing to each angel as he said their names. "They're angels, just like your kids."
Victor and Aziza both shared a quick look with one another and then looked back and forth between their own kids and the three angels before them. The idea that the kids were the products of human experimentation or area 51 escapists like they originally thought was farfetched, but angels? Why would angels be on Earth instead of Heaven and why would they take the form of children?
"There're thousands of them walking on Earth. Same goes for demons," Dean said, cutting to the chase as he watched confusion cross over the two parents' faces. His words only seemed to make things worse though so he went on. "They got sent down here to carry out a…" He shrugged. "Well, I guess you could call it a mission in a way."
"How do you know all this?" Aziza finally questioned. She slowly pushed off her knees and stood, still holding Daniel in her arms. "Are you angels too?"
"God no!" Dean laughed.
"It's kind of our job," Sam revealed, giving his brother a look before continuing. "We hunt down de-aged angels and demons and find them safe places to live or help out their parents if they already have a family."
"We were actually looking for your angels all morning," Dean added. "Our angels had a vision that you were on this road, but they couldn't sense any angels when we drove past."
"We just got here not too long ago," Adina sniffled. I'm from Egypt and Vic is from Brazil. We were meeting up here."
"Well, that explains the sensing problem," Dean sighed, running a hand over his face wearily. Sam watched him silently and then looked between Adina and Victor.
"Do you mind if we take this inside. It's been a long day and…well, it's about to get longer. This angel and demons stuff takes a bit of explaining, yah know?" Victor nodded slowly and looked to Adina.
"Your call," he said softly. Adina looked down at Daniel, teeth bothering at her bottom lip as she thought over her answer. Dean stepped forward then, earning a look from Adina.
"I am sorry, ma'am," he said. He met Daniel's eyes then and held out a hand. "Forgive me?" he asked. Daniel stared at the hand offered to him for several minutes before wiping his eyes with the back of his hand and reaching out for Dean's large hand. He squeezed it and Dean squeezed back.
"I sorry too."
"We're both forgiven then," Dean said with a smile that was quickly returned. Adina's teeth stopped bothering at her lip then and she nodded toward her father's house.
"Okay then," she started. "Let's hear about your hunt for baby angels."
Thank you, Alexis (guest), for the request! I'm sorry to say that I won't be posting a new chapter next week. I'm leaving the state and I also have finals to study for so writing is going to be a little impossible. Again, sorry, but the following week a chapter should be written and ready for reading :)
