Chapter Three: Brother

Hot water rushed over Light's skin as his fingers worked soap into his brown hair. Misa's hands rolled up his back, her fingers playing in the suds. "Come on Light." the beautiful blonde whined as her pink lips formed a pout, "What's wrong?"

"I should have made you kill him when I had the chance." he mumbled under his breath. "I can't believe he's using her like this."

"Who? Sayu?" her oblivious tone made Light's fingers twitch.

"Yes, Misa." Light huffed. "Sayu, he's using her to corner me."

"I mean...other than Sayu crying when he dies, I don't understand how this changes-"

Light tipped her chin up and aggressively cupped her face in his hands, "This changes everything, Misa."

"Light calm-"

"Do not tell me to calm down." he snapped in a harsh whisper. "If I kill him now, he's told the police to assume if anything happens to him, that I am Kira."

"Yeah but that was always a thing-"

"And now he has almost unlimited access to my family, to my house." a vein showed in the angry teen's temple. "Sayu could say the wrong thing at any time, Misa. He's using my sister as a shield."

"I've never seen you like-"

"Sayu wasn't involved before." Light dead panned.

"Your Dad's just allowing this?"

"L doesn't need his permission, it's part of the investigation. Dad isn't allowed to interfere and Mom doesn't know anything."

"Any chance Sayu will get bored and break up with him?" the model chirped.

"Misa that is the most idiotic-"

"No really!" she pushed on, "Sayu is a fifteen year old girl, they get bored and change their minds like they change clothes. She totally can't keep up with him in a conversation because she can't-"

Light glared down at the blonde and Misa felt a lump form in her throat. "I'm not calling Sayu dumb just saying she's not a genius like you or L, I get bored listening to him talk all the time because I don't know what he's saying! Maybe she will too!"

"That could very well be true." Light sighed and his girlfriend hugged him around the waist, pressing her bare body against his.

"See, you could be worried about nothing. He's creepy, girl's Sayu's age hate that." Her pretty eyes focused on his face that she loved so much.

Tired eyes stared back at her and Misa smiled a pretty smile "Where is Sayu anyway?"

"In the kitchen." Light groaned. "Making a cake."

"Well...he's not leaving her anytime soon." Misa frowned adorably.

"Thank .much….Misa." Light hissed sarcastically.

Sayu hummed a happy tune as she hand stirred chocolate lava cake mix around in a huge glass bowl. The counter was a mess. Cake decorating tools were littered across it alongside several dish towels and different attempts at homemade frosting. The fifteen year old's pretty brown curls were pulled back into a loose bun and she wore her mother's pink ruffled apron.

"Sayu! Ryuzaki is here, dear!" Sachiko called from what sounded like the living-room.

"I'm in the kitchen!" Sayu retorted with an excited smile.

The dark haired man sauntered inside after greeting Mrs. Yagami. His raccoon-esque eyes settled on Sayu and a small smile pressed his ivory lips "And what might you be making, Sayu?" his velvet voice cracked as he looked over the sugar coated mess.

"An 'I'm sorry my brother was a ginormous ass-hole' cake." The brunette retorted with a small half smirk.

"Language Sayu." Sachiko yelled from one room over.

Blush spread from Sayu's cheeks to the tips of her ears and she squeaked "Sorry Mom!"

A small chuckle befell Ryuzaki's lips as he hunched over beside her, to get a better look inside the bowel. "Can I-"

"You can have the bowl and the spoon after I finish with them." Glossy lips helps a lovely smile, "It's important that we never waste sweets after all."

"You're an angel." L deadpanned.

"You really like your sweets, huh?" She handed the eager man beside her the spoon he was already eyeing as she poured the batter into a cake pan.

"Sugar is one of a few things I enjoy in life, yes." he muttered around the batter covered spoon and stars filled his eyes. "This tastes amazing."

"It's just chocolate and like...hot fudge type stuff and-"

"It's perfect." L moaned as he swallowed the mouthful of liquid diabetes.

"Well, I'm really glad you like it. I hope the cake tastes as good as the batter." Sayu giggled as she slipped the pan into the oven and set the timer. "I made three different kinds of frosting because I wasn't sure what you wanted-"

"I could sample each one and-" a smile spread out on his lips as Sayu handed him a clean spoon.

"Knock yourself out." the girl mused as she leaned against the fridge watching him eat entire spoon-fulls of each bowl of frosting. "You're adorable." Sayu finally giggled after minutes of thinking it.

L froze and turned his eyes in her direction as he spoke softly "Me?"

"Mhm." She nodded her head insistently. "Yup! Total cutie-pie."

"Well thank you, Sayu. No one has ever said anything of that nature to me before." he husked as he stared down at each bowl of whipped sugar. "I think you should use all three."

"Seriously?" her eyebrow arched dramatically.

"Yes, two different ones on top, just split it down the middle and the third around the circumference." he explained softly as if the answer were obvious.

"Alright, it's your cake." A smile graced her pink lips.

The messy haired male stepped forward, dropping the spoon in the sink as he brushed some frosting away from Sayu's ivory cheek. "Are you always such a mess?" he muttered.

"I um- No?" pink turned to red in a heart-beat as heavy blush flooded her face.

"Too bad." Ryuzaki laughed softly at her embarrassment, "I wouldn't need to carry so many snacks around if you were."

"I mean, your snacks probably taste better than frosting off my cheek." The teen girl looked around nervously as he stuck his finger in his mouth.

"Nope. You taste just fine, Sayu."

"Awe!" Misa chirped from the doorway.

"What exactly are you doing to my sister?" Light asked as he appeared behind his girlfriend.

"Just sampling the wonderful desert she's taking the time to bake for me, Light. No need to be upset. I am sure Sayu will let you have a piece too."

"You won't want one though." Sayu interjected quickly. "You don't like frosting and there's gonna be...three…differ-" when her eyes met Light's she decided to stop talking.

"Well, I suppose that simply means more for me." Ryuzaki declared happily with a clap of his hands.

A small glint held Light's dark eyes as he looked to his baby sister "Sayu what is going on?"

"Mom said Ryu could have dinner with us tonight because you were such a jerk last night." The brunette explained rather matter-of-factually.

"It's nowhere near time for-"

'So we're hanging out, gosh Light!" She hissed, "Mind your own business!"

"Light." L's velvet voice interjected, "Why are you so upset? We work together after all, you know I would never hurt Sayu."

"I would like to have a conversation with you, Ryuzaki. Right now."

"I see no reason why not." L mused. "I won't be long, Sayu."

"Light you'd better not be a jerk!" The tiny brunette hissed.

"I won't. Misa, stay with Sayu." and with that the adversaries disappeared out the back door onto the porch.

Irritation filled the fifteen year old girl's eyes and she frowned at Misa "Why is he doing this?"

"Awe c'mon Sayu. He loves you he's just trying to protect you." Misa leaned against dining table, staring at Sayu where she stood in the kitchen doorway. "You've gotta know that."

"All I know is, Light has never cared this much about who I spend my time with, like ever." she murmured.

"Why does it matter anyway? I mean, how much do you even like Ryuzaki? Is it worth upsetting Light?" The blonde asked with a pretty smile.

"What kind of question is that?" the tiny brunette crossed her arms and shifted her weight onto one leg as she arched a demanding brow in the older girl's direction.

"I mean, he's weird." Misa held up one finger as if to count the ways. "He talks about the same stuff like non-stop-"

"He's smart." Sayu interjected.

"So?" Misa whined softly.

"So I like that."

"You're like fifteen! Why do you care if he's smart, I-"

"What should I be focused on, Misa?"

"I dunno' his looks? A sense of humor? Can't you just pick a boy from school?" The blonde begged. "There's like no way you can keep up with someone like him...like what do you even talk about?"

"I could ask you the same thing." The younger girl turned bitter.

"Are you calling me stupid?" Big round eyes went wide as Misa's mouth dropped open.

"All I did was repeat what you said, did you call me stupid, Misa?" The fifteen year old arched her dark brow.

The blonde's cheeks puffed up and she let out a deep breath "Okay, Okay, Okay...I'm sorry." Misa gave up. "But I do think you should-"

"Don't tell me to listen to Light."

Light's fingers wrapped around the rail lining his back porch "This is low even for you." He pinched the bridge of his nose.

"If you are not Kira, you have nothing to worry about." The detective mused as he stared at the oldest Yagami child.

"You're going to hurt my sister, I don't have to be a serial killer to be worried about that." Light's voice came out soft, a front.

"Sayu is a smart girl, she will understand in the end that everything was for the greater good."

A soft, sarcastic chuckle lingered on the air as Light responded "Sayu is a fifteen year old girl, she's not looking at the big picture, why can't you just leave her out of this?"

"Unfortunately, I have exhausted every other method I could think up." Wind moved through his dark hair, causing a veil of black to whisk across his vision.

"And that gives you the right to break her heart?"

"You give Sayu too little credit, Light. I know that she will understand when this is over." L stated softly with a matter-of-fact pang.

"Because you know her so well?"

"No, because she is easily the most understanding person I have ever met." His eyes remained fixated on a butterfly he'd noticed perching on a flower in the yard.

"You don't have to tell me about my sister, I have been with her every day since the day she was born. No one, not even Sayu, could possibly understand what you're doing right now." The irate Yagami brother snapped.

"I will not take this charade too far, I give you my word."

"I watched you kiss her, what exactly is 'too far' in your book, Ryuzaki?"

"Honestly?" The dark haired male arched a brow, "This kind of investigative process is all new to me, so I can't really speak from experience." his thumb rested against his lower lip as his eyes turned up in thought, "I'd have to say interc-" Light cut him off in one swift move.

Ryuzaki's back slammed against the wall, just beside the sliding door so that anyone who glanced toward the back porch wouldn't see them. Light leaned in, his fingers gripped L's shirt at the neck and held him in place, "Don't even think it." Light's nostrils flared. "You're lucky that I decided to let that kiss go. It doesn't take a serial killer to end someone's life over something like this. If you touch my sister, I will kill you."

"Duly noted." The dark haired male muttered in a relaxed fashion as he casually lifted his hands in surrender. "What I meant was, such a thing would be a step over the line. It won't happen." As his explanation fell from his ivory lips, L's eyes began to read with a hint of, 'Let go of me before I remind you just how small you are'.

Light begrudgingly released him and smoothed the wrinkles from his own shirt, "I'm not Kira, I wish you could accept that."

"As I have said many times, if you are not Kira, you have nothing to fear."
