Chance Meetings

Balthazar stared wide eyed out the backseat window of the Impala with his brothers and nephew. He did not stare at the endless fields or thick woods as the Impala rolled down a winding, dusty gravel road. His eyes were glued to a building slowly coming up ahead. It was a beige house with rock siding and huge windows. A porch could be seen peeking out the back of the house and cobblestone created a path all around the house and unfinished garden.

"Pretty awesome, right?" Dean asked, watching the angels' expressions through the mirror. Balthazar didn't answer and neither did the others in the car, each too in awe to speak. Sam and Dean had been working on the makings of the new house for months, but it the idea of getting a brand new house hadn't sunk in until the house started to peak out over the tree line as they drew closer.

Dean chuckled, mumbling a few words to Sam before pulling into the driveway of their home. The angels and Vali climbed out of the Impala and stood in the gravel, staring at the magnificent house before them as Bobby pulled up with Kevin in his truck. Months ago, their old house had stood in the same spot before burning in a terrible, demonic fire. The Winchesters and their family had lost a home then, but now they had ganged a new one.

"Howdy do, boys!"

The front door of the house swung wide open. Sheriff Donna Hanscum stepped out of the beige house with a wide smile on her face and a man in a construction uniform following close behind.

"Sheriff," Sam greeted, surprise in his voice.

"Uh…are we in trouble?" Balthazar muttered, glancing at the two Winchester's curiously as Donna hurried over to them. She shook Sam, Dean, Kevin, and Bobby's hands and gave the angels each a pat on the head.

"Long time no see, fellas. Sorry for crashing your place. Don't worry. I'm not here because ya'll are in trouble. When I heard you were coming back to the neighborhood I figured I should welcome ya'll back."

"Thanks, sheriff," Dean thanked. "How's the house look on the inside?"

Donna grinned. "Oh, it's gorgeous! It's not finished, but man…it's a beauty," she praised.

"It'll be finished in a day or two now that the Winchesters are here," the contractor behind her stated then, nodding to Sam and Dean. "The sooner we get started the better."

The brothers both nodded and then turned to their family. "We'll be staying with Samandriel and his family until Sam and I get the finishing touches on the house figured out with the contractors," Dean stated. "Why don't you go get settled?"

"Aw, but we want to see the rest of the house," Balthazar pouted, shoulders dropping with his invisible wings.

"Sorry, but not yet," Sam sighed. He glanced at his brother in the corner of his eye. Dean winked at him and Sam rolled his eyes. "Anyway…" Sam nodded at the house sitting across the street. "Alfie's probably driving Amy and the guys crazy waiting for us."

"Fine, we'll go," Gabriel grumbled.

"Before you guys get going…" Donna started. "I wanted to talk to you boys about the fire." Everyone stiffened. "My teams been working on your case for months, but we still can't find anything directing us towards the culprit that started the fire or who put those weird bags in your walls."

"Bags? How'd you know about that?" Kevin questioned in shock.

"I told her," the contractor said, breaking his silence. He looked to Dean and Sam. "You both looked rather upset that they were in the house and I guessed you weren't the ones to put them there…"

Balthazar's attention left their conversation. His mind drifted and as it did so, he realized that there was something with them. It wasn't a threatening presence or anything like that and whatever it was it was very week. Almost like a—

"Angel," he gasped, gaining his brothers' attention.

"You feel it too?" Castiel questioned and Balthazar nodded. "I've felt it since we pulled up to the house."

"Why didn't you say anything?" Gabriel whispered so the grownups couldn't hear.

"I was a little distracted," Castiel defended.

"I can feel it coming from over there," Balthazar said, pointing down the driveway where Donna's car was parked with the construction worker's equipment and vehicles. He started walking, his brothers following close behind. The closer they got, the stronger the feeling in their chests grew.

"It's in the car," Castiel said, placing a hand on the door of Donna's car.

Balthazar flew up to the door handle and yanked it hard, using all his strength to open it. Cool air from the air conditioner blew into their faces and the songs of old nursery rhymes sang from the radio. Balthazar peaked inside the car with his brothers, gasping at the sight inside.

A little boy with black skin sat in a car seat in the back seat of the car, babbling along with the nursery rhymes. A pair of dark grey wings with purple raches stretched far out behind him, twitching along to the music.

"Is that…"

"Uriel," Castiel breathed, finishing Balthazar's sentence.

"Caaas!" Uriel yelled on seeing his brother and he opened his arms to his brother. Balthazar frowned. Castiel had told him about Uriel and what had happened to him. They hadn't left each other as friends and yet, here Uriel was reaching for his brother like there wasn't a great rift between them. Maybe his time in the world of humanity has already started to affect him—

"OUCH!" Castiel cried. Balthazar snapped out of his thoughts. Castiel had flown to Uriel and in return received a quick attack from his brother. Uriel's hands were in Castiel's right wing and tugging hard. It appeared that Uriel wasn't over his and Cassie's little spat after all.

"Come on, Uriel," Balthazar coaxed, flying onto the seat beside his brothers. "Let Cassie go. You both were douchesnozzels. Let's just admit that and move on—Hey!" Uriel's wings slapped Balthazar in the face, filling his mouth with feathers and sending him tumbling onto his backside. Balthazar spat out a spray of feathers. "Okay, apparently some of us are still douchesnozzels." Balthazar glared at his brother. "You know, Uriel, it's not all Cassie's fault with what happened. You were the asshat that started killing your own kind—"

"Balthy," Cas hushed. Balthazar shut his mouth and watched as Castiel curled his free wing around Uriel. Uriel's eyes met Cas' and the two stared each other down, a silent conversation flying between them. Balthazar had seen them do something similar back in the old days when they were soldiers of the same garrison. Castiel and Uriel were a force to be reckoned with. Together they made one of the strongest teams in Heaven. In just one look they would be able to pass on war strategies or secrets to help them against their foes. They weren't exactly friends, but they were brothers in both grace and arms.

"Sowy."

Balthazar's eyes widened. Uriel pulled his hand back from Castiel's wing, releasing the black feathers. Castiel smiled at him and curled the wing that had once been in Uriel's hand around his brother in a sign of forgiveness.

"Hey, angels!" Bobby called suddenly, snapping the angels out of their moment. The four turned, eyes falling on the old hunter, Kevin, and Donna as they ran over. "What are you three up to…" Bobby stopped, freezing in his tracks when he got a good look at the baby angel wrapped in Castiel's arms. "Who…"

"This is Uriel," Balthazar introduced. "You remember him, right?"

Bobby huffed. "Yeah, I remember him." He looked to Donna. "You're his guardian?"

"Uh…yes…I…" Donna sucked in a breath. "Listen, I know he's got wings, but he's not a monster. He's just a—"

"He's an angel," Kevin interrupted. "We know." Donna frowned in confusion and the angels took the chance to manifest their wings. Donna gasped, eyes going wide as black, gold, and silver wings became visible to the human eye.

"They…what?"

"It's a really long story," Gabriel sighed. "Long story short, God decided to give us all a do over and cast all the angels in heaven down to earth to learn from humanity."

"Wait…all angels?"

"Yes," Castiel said with a nod. "There are many of us spread out throughout the world. We've only been able to find a few."

"This is insane."

"Welcome to the family," Balthazar teased, chuckling slightly. "We can explain more if you like. Just…" Balthazar looked around, eyes falling on the contractors walking around with Sam and Dean as they showed them blueprints and discussed plans. "…not here. There are too many ears and eyes." Balthazar snapped his fingers then, causing his and his brothers' wings to disappear from the human eye again.

"Where will we go?"

"Remember the neighbors across the street the brothers mentioned?" Kevin questioned, receiving a nod from the sheriff. "Well, the toddler living there is a baby angel too."

Donna's eyes widened and she looked to Uriel. "You okay with this, monkey-boy?" She reached out, unbuckling her angel from his car seat.

Uriel's wings fanned out and he screeched loudly, pumping his fists into the air. "Sammy's! Sammy's!" he chanted and Donna barked out a laugh.

"Samandriel's it is then."
