National Kids Day
Bobby watched Balthazar from the entryway to Samandriel's guardians' Livingroom. The little angel was curled up in a rocking chair with Sam's laptop propped on his lap. Balthazar's face was pinched with concentration as he scrolled through the page open on the screen.
"What you looking at, boy?"
Balthazar startled from his thoughts and his head whipped around in search of who had frightened him. His wings fluffed up wide and wrapped around his body almost like a shield. When he looked up and found Bobby standing casually a few feet away though, his face pinched into a glare and his wings slowly relaxed against his back. A hand flew from the laptop keyboard to his chest in attempt to calm his rapidly beating heart. "You're just as bad as Cassie," the angel huffed, letting out a deep breath and slouching back into his chair.
"I'll make sure to buy some bells for the two of us," Bobby teased. He stepped farther into the room, peering over the back of Balthazar's rocking chair to take a look at the screen. "National Holidays?" he read.
"You humans are so weird," Balthazar started. "You've got holidays for practically everything."
"Oh, yeah?"
"There's a national pie and donut day," Balthazar said, pointing at the screen of Sam's computer. "And…there's a kids day."
"A what?"
"Kids day," Balthazar said again. "It's a day that encourages adults to spend more quality time with their children."
"Huh. Don't see why'd you celebrate that." Bobby said while staring at the date of the holiday provided on the website. Balthazar deflated slightly, shoulders drooping along with his smile. "Adults should spend time with their kids all the time without a day to remind them to. Though…" the old hunter reached out and ruffled the angel's hair. "That doesn't mean we can't celebrate it at least once. Think Kieren would be against making a cake today to celebrate?"
Balthazar shot up to his feet, almost knocking over Sam's laptop in the process. He set it aside and hurried to the entrance to the living room. "I'll go ask right now!" the angel shouted with excitement before disappearing from sight. Bobby laughed as he watched the angel vanish into the other room and turned to pick up Sam's laptop. He skimmed over the information on the page before nodding and shutting the computer. They had work to do.
The house smelt like chocolate and other baked goods as the clock hit noon. Bobby sat at the table in the kitchen with Simon, Vali, and Amy at his side. They were making paper decorations and handing off the finished products to Kevin and the angels to hang up around the house.
"How's the cake going, Kier?" Simon called, glancing over his shoulder as the oven timer beeped loudly.
Kieren held up a finger and opened the oven door, pulling out a mouthwatering chocolate cake. "Looks good to me," the boy decided before setting it on the counter to cool. "It'll be better with my homemade frosting though."
"It's a shame we didn't know about this before Sheriff Handscum and her angel left," Amy sighed, fiddling with the last loop of her set of paper streamers. "They would have loved this."
"Well, there's always next time," Bobby commented. "Let's just hope those other two idgits decide to come back at some point today." He was talking about Sam and Dean of course. The two had been gone all morning. They were working on the finishing touches to the house across the street. That's all the two have been doing since rolling up into the almost finished house' driveway. Dean said they were just making up for lost time. In Bobby's opinion, they were trying to drive their overtired and stressed out bodies into the ground.
Bobby picked up a glue stick from the center of the table and started to glue the two ends of his paper streamer piece together when there was a loud bang from the front door. Heads popped up at the sound, crafts and frosting momentarily forgotten. The kitchen door was wide enough that they could see out of it and into the hallway that led to the front door so they could easily see what was going on.
Dean had been the loud noise they had heard. He had pushed open the front door ruffly, causing it to smack against the nearest wall.
As the hunter pushed through the doorway, it was clear that something was wrong. Dean looked exhausted. His shoulders were slumped and there were dark circles under his eyes. He looked like he hadn't slept the two days he's been in Minnesota.
"Well, speak of the devil," Bobby huffed as Dean yanked off his jacket and tossed it onto the coatrack to his right.
"Dean?" Kevin called, but Dean's eyes didn't look his way. In fact, they stayed pinned to the floor as he passed the kitchen and marched further down the hall.
"I'm going to take a nap. Wake me in an hour or two," he mumbled before disappearing into an old room Simon had cleared out for the Winchesters and their family to use.
Sam came through the door next then. Instead of giving them the grumpy cold shoulder too, he managed a tired smile. "Sorry about that," he sighed. "He's just stressed. We're having trouble with one of the rooms." He slumped down into one of the chairs set up around the kitchen table. Gabriel dropped the decorations he had grabbed to bring to the living room and flew over to Sam's chair. The hunter smiled down at the angel and reached out, scooping Gabriel up into his arms and cuddling him close. "What are you guys up to?"
"We're making decorations for kids day," Castiel revealed as he took the decorations Gabriel had dropped and held them up for Sam to see.
"Oh, yeah?" Sam hummed curiously. "What's that?"
"A day where adults spend time with their kids," Simon explained. "I think I remember celebrating it once with my parents when I was young." He glanced up from the paper decoration he was working on. "How about you, Sam?"
Sam shifted in his seat. "Uh…no, Dean and I never celebrated national holidays." He paused. "Well, I guess we celebrated pi day, but every day is pie day for Dean." He brushed a hand through Gabe's feathers. "We tried celebrating birthdays and other holidays growing up, but hunting kinda took up our time."
Bobby poked at one of the paper dolls Amy had showed him how to make. There had been other factors other than hunting that went along with why the boys didn't celebrate holidays growing up. Sometimes they didn't have money for gifts or food, and other times they were too worried about whether or not the other would return from a hunt with their dad to care. Sam and Dean never had a normal childhood full of parties and celebrations like their angels. Hell, they didn't even have a childhood really. All they had were nightmares.
"Maybe we should celebrate something else," Cas suggested, eyes tracing the path Dean had walked.
"I think you're onto something, Cassie," Balthazar agreed. "I don't think kids day is what we need to celebrate right now."
"How about we celebrate Sam and Dean Day instead?" Vali suggested shyly. "I mean…" He looked to Sam. "You and your brother seem to need the attention more than Dad, uncle Cas, Balthazar, and Samandriel."
"I better get a pie in then," Kieren sighed, pushing the cake he just baked to the side. "My chocolate cake is good, but if this is going to be Sam and Dean day we'll need a pie."
"And we better get these decorations finished," Bobby said, nodding at the mess of paper and glue all over the kitchen table. Yeah, they had work to do, but at least they had another two hours before Dean woke up from his nap.
Two hours later, Bobby was crouched behind the living room couch. He wasn't alone, everyone else in the house except for Sam, Dean, and Cas were with him. Sam and Cas had left to wake Dean up from his nap and bring him into the living room for the big surprise. Bobby looked around while waiting for the three. The coffee table was stacked with the chocolate cake and pecan pie Kieren had made and a pack of cold beers and juice packets sat on the floor beside it. The walls were covered in paper dolls and streamers. Vali had colored on each of the paper dolls, turning them into little Sams and Deans. Bobby had to say, it was cute.
"So why are you dragging me to the livingroom and not the coffee pot?" Dean's sleep addled voice echoed from the hall. Everyone crouched down lower in their places just to be sure that the hunter wouldn't be able to see them when he first walked in. They held their breaths, waiting for their cue.
"We have something to show you," Sam said. He was close now, just a step away from entering the room.
"Oh, yeah? And what's that?"
Bobby jumped up from behind the couch with the others, screaming loudly as Sam, Dean, and Cas entered the room. "Happy Sam and Dean day!" everyone shouted and Dean stepped back, shock and confusion flying over his face as he took in everything all at once.
"Wh…what's this?" he questioned, looking to Sam, Cas, and then the others.
"Balthazar discovered there was a National Kids day and wanted to celebrate it," Simon started to explain. "It's a day where adults are encouraged to spend more time with their kids."
"But you and Sam definitely need that more," Kevin added. He held up his hands, motioning to the desserts, drinks, and decorations. "Everyone pitched in."
"I…" Dean looked around again. "I…you…this…"
Sam chuckled. "I think you broke him."
Dean slapped his brother's shoulder, hissing a ,"shut up" before stepping further into the living room and smiling down at the fresh pie that was filling the room with a sweet, mouthwatering smell. "Thanks, guys," Dean said, lifting his head to look at his little family. "I needed this." He turned to look at Sam. "We both did."
"Aww," Amy cooed, holding open her arms and giving Dean a big hug. "Anything for you two." Sam joined in on the hug and soon Kevin, Vali, and everyone else was swarming them to join in on crushing the two hunters.
Bobby stayed back for a moment, just watching as the two brothers were piled up on until they eventually fell to the floor from the force of the group hug. Dean and Sam had always looked after their family before themselves. At least, now with the big family the two have ganged, they could be looked after too.
"You joining in on this hug fest, Bobby?" Dean called suddenly and Bobby slid out of his thoughts. He grinned at the two boys he had helped raised as they smiled up at him from the bottom of the pile.
"Idgits," Bobby muttered under his breath fondly. He moved away from the couch and to the pile of angels and humans currently crushing the two hunters. Spreading his arms wide, Bobby let himself fall onto the pile, taking his place on the top of the Winchester hug pile.
Thanks, RangerHorseTug, for the kids day request!
