Chupa Chups
Dean leaned back until his head was resting heavily against a pile of fluffy hotel pillows. "This," he said to the others in the room. "Is the life."
Sam chuckled from his own bed, his eyes dipping away from the hotel TV to take in his brother's relaxed gaze. "Yeah," he agreed. "I missed this."
For the first time, in a long time, the Winchesters were on the road again. They were on a job of course but they weren't hunting wendigos or vampires. No, they were on a different kind of hunting job this time. They were looking for an angel. Well, technically they aren't anymore. They had found the little one a few days into their trip.
With their angel hunt taken care of, it was time for a little rest and relaxation. If they were back in the states, they would've gone straight home but they weren't in the states this round. They were in a hotel in Matamata, New Zealand. The Kaimai mountain range swallowed them in its beauty and shadow, the smell of food in the restaurants surrounding the hotel wafted through the window, and the chatter of excited tourists could be heard through the hotel's thin walls.
Just as they had started to relax fully into the comfort of their hotel, a knock sounded at the door.
Dean raised his head momentarily. "Come in!" he cried and his head collapsed back into the pillow.
The door creaked open and Vali stepped in. He was dressed head to toe in New Zealand merchandise and the and the four angels stuffed in his arms were in a similar state.
"Hey, guys," Vali said. "Manuela dropped Nuriel off. She had an errand to run."
"That's fine," Sam reassured and he smiled at the baby angel squished between Gabriel, Balthazar, and Castiel. "How are you, Nury?"
"Great!" Nury bounced a little in Vali's arms. "Mama gave me candy. Wanna try?"
"Sure, Nury. What is it?" Dean's eyes shown with hunger. "Snickers?"
Nuriel laughed. "No!" they cried. "Chupa Chups!" Tiny hands waved a bag full of foreign candy in the air.
"Chupa whata?"
"Chu-pa chups," Nuriel said again, slower this time.
"They're like lollipops," Castiel clarified.
"Oh," Dean pushed himself from the comfort of his bed and walked over to the angel with flame blue and orange wings. "Why didn't you say so?"
Nuriel popped the bag open with some help from their brothers and handed everyone a lollipop.
Dean was the first to get one and the hunter quickly started to pull at the rapper. He tugged and ripped but the damn thing wouldn't come off no matter what.
"I think I have a dud," the hunter commented while looking up from his candy.
He expected to see everyone else sucking on their new treat when he looked up but nobody except for Nuriel was enjoying their lollipop. They were instead suffering an issue similar to Dean's. No matter how hard they tugged or bit at the wrapper, they couldn't manage to break their candy free.
"Nuriel?" Dean handed his lollipop over to the angel. "Lend me a hand?"
The angel blinked at him for a second, confusion in their eyes. Dean and the others couldn't blame the little angel. Why it was so hard to open a simple candy wrapper was baffling to everyone in the room.
Nevertheless, like the angel they were, Nuriel agreed to help conquer the troublesome candy wrapper. Their little hands reached out for the candy in Dean's palm and with a quick pull, the wrapper pulled free.
"Here," Nuriel said and she offered Dean the yummy treat.
Dean popped the candy into his mouth. "Thanks, Nury," he moaned. The taste of strawberry was already washing over his tongue and though the candy had been a bitch to get into, it was still pretty damn good.
"Thanks," Sam said as Nuriel unwrapped his lollipop next. "How long is your mommy gonna be gone, Nury?" He popped the candy in his mouth. "We were going to take a trip to Hobbiton today."
"She said it'd be a couple hours," Vali answered for Nury. "I can call her back— see if she'll let us keep Nurry a little longer?" He glanced down at the newest member of his growing family. "What do you think, Nuriel?"
The little angel fluffed up their wings and let out an excitable shriek from around their lollipop. "Hobbits! Hobbits!"
Dean and Sam chuckled and shared a look with each other. Vali was still new to the family but the kid was fitting right in. He liked traveling around but most of all, he loved meeting his different aunts and uncles. The kid was finally getting the family he deserved and, well, who were Sam and Dean to tell him he couldn't spend a little more time with an aunt he only just met?
"Say cheese!"
"Cheese!"
Sam pushed the button on his phone, snapping five or ten pictures of the baby angels crowded around Vali. They were by a small green door built into the side of a hill. It was a home for a hobbit— a kind of creature found in the Winchester family's favorite book and movie series.
"This is so awesome," Dean gushed as he looked over the little town. The place had been breathtaking in the movies but in real life? The hunter couldn't think of a word that could describe how cool it really was. "Charlie is gonna be so jealous."
"She's gonna kill us for not taking her with," Sam agreed as he snapped a picture of a sign. "She's in Moondoor right now, right?"
"She'd give up her kingdom in a heartbeat for hobbits, Sammy. That's no question."
"Okay. True."
"Can we live here?" Balthazar asked as Vali carried him on his shoulders. They walking down a road winding through the little town of Hobbiton now. "I wanna be a hobbit."
"Me too!" Cas cried and he flew up into Vali's arms.
Gabriel walked behind them with Nury, hand in hand. "We could turn the house back home into this?" he suggested.
Sam raised a finger, pointing at the angel with a heavy frown pinching his brow. "No you won't," he said sternly.
"What?" Dean teased. "Afraid you won't fit, Sammy?"
"Neither will you, Dean," Sam reminded. "And no. I'm just saying we should keep destroying the house to a minimum. It's not even a year old yet."
Dean laughed. "You worry too much, little brother."
Despite his words, Dean understood where Sam was coming from. The house really didn't need any grace warping or anything that would threaten permanent damage. It was their home— fresh, new and safe. The Winchester's wanted it to be kept that way as long as possible.
"Look! Fishes!" Nury cried and the two Winchester brothers turned, their gaze following Nury's voice to a nearby stone bridge.
Nury was sitting on the lip of it with the other angels, their glittering blue eyes marveling at the water below.
"They're pretty, aren't they?" Vali mused.
Nury bobbed their head in answer.
Sam and Dean made their way to their little family, peeking over the edge too and watching the fish swim lazily through the water.
The spot they were at was beautiful. The sun was just starting to set so the colors of the orange and purple sky reflected against the calm water.
"Okay," Sam sighed suddenly. "You guys can't touch the house but if you can recreate this view by the pond…" He trailed off, losing himself into the wash of color before him.
The angels smirked.
"Sure thing, Samsquashe," Gabriel chuckled and he snuggled up against the human leaning against the lip of the bridge.
"I wanna help!" Nury cried. "Wanna see the fishes!" They're little wings flapped under their jacket excitedly, startling some of the fish below.
Dean barked out a laugh and ruffled the angel's mess of red hair. "Sure thing, kiddo," he promised. "Uncle Bobby and I'll even show you how to catch the fishes."
I'm back! For a little while at least. Turns out my muse and motivation are still very dead for this fic. I managed to force myself to write a few chapters though so I'll be posting the others I've managed to get written soon. I haven't been to Hobbiton so if I messed anything up let me know and I'll fix it. Hope you all like my precious little Nury!
