This one is a little short but I had to cut it before the next scene. Also if you heard a monstrous squeal this morning is was me watching RWBY Season 6 Episode 1! No spoilers, don't worry. I'm currently sitting at my desk watching the midterm election results so I needed a little stress relief. And so this chapter was born. Enjoy.
An Inconvenience and A Sacrifice
When the sun was sinking back down in the sky she had to stop. She was tired and sore, and her backpack felt like it weighed a hundred pounds. She scaled high into a tree and settled down for a break. She was still a good distance from the rendezvous but she didn't even think Qorw would be there by now. They had purposefully picked somewhere that was a good distance from the camp in case either of them were followed. She was pulling a granola bar out of her bag when she heard footsteps below. SHe nervously looked onwards but it was Qrow and a small boy trailing behind him. She smirked and silently repacked her bag, slinging it over her shoulder and climbing down the tree as silently as possible.
She was about to jump down and scare the old geezer when the hairs on the back of her neck prickled. She stayed where she was and let the two pass under her without incident. About a minute later a Faunus came lurking through the shadows, clearly tailing them. She readied Myrtenaster and dropped from the tree, casting a glyph that froze their feet where they stood. She heard Qrow jump and rush back through the bushes. She smirked as she held the point of her rapier at the stalker.
"You're getting rusty old man."
"I knew he was back there." Qrow growled. He cocked his head as he stared at the White Fang member. "And just what are you doing out here?"
The deer Faunus had two small antlers sticking out of their forehead and due to the size Weiss guess it was a doe Faunus. And she was just about as talkative as a deer, with nothing but silence meeting their ears.
"How long will this ice last?" he asked her.
"A few hours if I'm nearby. Shorter if I leave."
He flicked his hand up and she understood the motion. With a likewise flick of her wrist the ice grew to completely encase the enemy.
"Alright let's get a move on. The less they know about us the better." Qrow plodded back through the forest.
Weiss got a good look at his companion as she brought up the rear of the party. He was really young, like younger than Ruby, and he looked terrified to be out here. He had dark hair and his eyes were an interesting green with orange accents. He was dressed pretty simply and she didn't see a weapon anywhere which ruled out a Huntsman. Once they were out of sight of the Faunus they changed direction and Qrow directed her to erase their trail. She did so before using her glyphs to catch back up to them, causing the new kid to give her an odd look. As night fell they stopped for camp and she prepared food for the three of them. As she handed the kid his bowl she smiled.
"I'm Weiss."
"I know." he gave an awkward smile. "I'm Oscar."
"No offense, but we went through all that to rescue a kid?" she asked Qrow.
He had a sneaky smile as he took a swig from his flask that made her feel like she was the butt of some joke. "That's not just some kid."
She glanced at Oscar and then back to Qrow. "You sure?"
"I am, well, I'm kinda...sorta...Professor Ozpin."
She raised an eyebrow. "Sure, and I'm an Ursa."
"Just listen to him, Snowflake." Qrow grumbled.
She crossed her arms and huffed but remained silent. Oscar gave her a nervous smile before speaking up. "Ozpin is very, very old and very, very special. We, or he, has a special Semblance. Whenever he dies he is resurrected inside someone else somewhere in the world."
"Pardon me?"
"I'm Ozpin. Well he's in my head. I can hear him."
"Great Qrow, we picked up a crazy."
"He said when you took your Beacon entrance exams, only your sister Winter showed up to watch." he regarded her scowl before plowing on. "You initially rejected Ruby as your partner and only chose her when the other option was Jaune. You told Professor Port that I, er, Ozpin picked the wrong team leader. You thought you should be the leader instead of Ruby. You went on a reconnaissance mission with Professor Oobleck and discovered a White Fang hideout that led to an attack on Vale."
"Oh my Oum." she whispered. "You're really him."
Oscar pulled out a cane she recognized as Professor Ozpin's, turning it over in his hands. "Trust me, it took awhile for me to believe it too."
"So you can...reincarnate?"
He gave a heavy sigh. "He said he's very old and he was tasked to bring down the greatest enemy this world has ever known. He is doomed to live forever until it is defeated."
"The greatest evil?"
"The Grimm, and their mistress." Qrow spoke up. "Salem."
The way he said her name instilled a sense of foreboding in her. "Salem?"
"She is the master of all Grimm. She's the one who orchestrated the attack on Beacon and she isn't stopping there."
"I thought Cinder-"
"Cinder is just a puppet." Qrow cut in. "Salem is pulling the strings on her and the White Fang to an extent, along with a host of other allies."
"So wait, you're Ozpin? You're who we've been waiting for?" she pointed to Oscar and faced Qrow. "He's supposed to be the one calling the shots and saving our skins? This is who you've been gathering intel for?"
"Hey he may look like a pipsqueak, but Oz is in there."
"So let me get this straight: this kid is going to lead us to...wherever it is we're going and do whatever it is we're doing. We're supposed to be bringing this huge battle to Cinder with a child in tow?"
"Let's not get too judgemental, Snowflake." Qrow growled. "You're just a kid too."
"A fully armed young adult who can hold her own in a fight. He's not even entrance age!"
"And he doesn't have to be. He's not here to fight. That's what we're for."
"You realize how crazy this is right? All we have is some kids and a drunk, and we're supposed to bring down 'the greatest evil'? Something apparently Ozpin hasn't been able to do since the Grimm existed? She can summon dragons but hey, we have a kid who can hear Ozpin's voice. We're saved!"
"And who ever said this was going to be easy?" Qrow gave her a look. "Didn't you come along to be useful? To not sit around in a house twiddling your thumbs? If you want easy you can go crawling back to Daddy and get a job as a hostess or something."
Her anger flared. "Excuse me if I'm the only one who sees there is no possible way we can go up against Cinder. Not even Pyrrha could…" her voice faltered.
"Weiss, we're all upset about Pyrrha. And remember, Ozpin died that night too. But we need to make sure her sacrifice wasn't in vain. I'm sure we're all pretty confident the others are going to fight no matter what. While we might be few in number, we're stronger together." Oscar smiled.
Weiss' face was turned away from the light of the fire. "No, you didn't"
"What?"
"You didn't die." she cast him a look darker than a Grimm's flesh. "You're sitting right here in front of me. Pyrrha isn't."
Oscar sighed. "He says he once told your leader Ruby he has made more mistakes than any man, woman, and child on this Earth. He says he didn't make that claim lightly."
"Don't you dare call her a mistake. She doesn't need your pity." Weiss spat. "You sacrificed yourself knowing you would come back. She sacrificed herself knowing she wouldn't."
"And for that she was braver than I could ever hope to be." Oscar said softly.
Weiss scowled before grabbing her rapier and stomping into the woods to start patrol. She climbed into a tree a little ways from camp that gave her a good view. She heard Oscar and Qrow talking but their voices were too soft for her to make out anything. She looked up at the sky and felt the familiar twist in her insides whenever she thought about Pyrrha.
The next morning she didn't say a word to either of them as they packed up and headed out. Qrow clearly had a destination in mind but he wasn't sharing anything with her. She mostly was in charge of erasing their trail and circling the area every once in a while to make sure they were alone. After nearly two weeks of traveling and passing through countless villages they came across another one, but it was markedly different. It was decimated.
Buildings were caving in and she didn't see a soul in sight. She read a nearby signpost. "Kuroyuri?"
Qrow ignored her and was busy looking around. "Doesn't seem like anyone has been here in a while Oz."
"Then they'll probably be here before too long. He says we should wait here. If Ms. Valkyrie and Mr. Ren are with them, then they're almost guaranteed to pass through here."
"Why?" Weiss grudgingly asked.
"Because this is where they're from." he answered simply.
After doing a quick once over of the town, they picked a relatively intact house to camp in. They each had a room as well as a functioning fireplace in the living area. Weiss rolled her sleeping bag out on the floor and laid on it, trying to gather her thoughts. So this is where those two were from. Honestly she hadn't thought about it but now that she had she marveled at Nora's upbeat attitude.
Qrow left the next day to scout the area nearby and she was left babysitting. Besides making food she didn't have to do much to tend to Oscar. He just sat there staring into the fire most of the time. Every other hour she did a quick perimeter check of the village to make sure they were alone.
When Qrow didn't return that night she grew a little paranoid, but Oscar told her not to worry. She ignored him and worried a lot, keeping watch most of the night by herself and doing perimeter checks every hour on the hour. On the fourth morning she was nearly knocked out of a tree by a huge force hitting the Earth, followed by an ear-splitting sound emanating from a nearby mountain. She readied her Dust and moved to the steeple of the bell tower to get a better vantage point. Oscar started to come out of their safe house but she lit a black glyph under him, throwing him back into the house and slamming the door. She sensed a foulness in the air, and it was better Jesus boy was out of the way. Right as the door slammed behind him she heard a sickening scraping on the cobblestones to the South of her position and a foulness entered the air.
So I promise I don't hate Oscar. I go into this more another the next chapter but please don't bury me in hate mail over the fact I insulted your cinnamon roll. I really do like Oscar and I promise we delve more into this issue later. Feel free to comment and critiques or concerns you have, but keep in mind this is only like the first scene he's in. We have a long way to go. Thanks for reading!
Also, if you actually care, anyone have ship suggestions?
