The Spy

He was the shadows. He wasn't in them, like King Itachi was, but was literally the shadow that followed you every step of the way, without you knowing. A silent ghost, invisible to all, but a selected few. Nobody but his mother and father knew what he looked like, because as a spy, such a thing was necessary.

He was loyal to the Queen. Yet, she was a very gentle individual which led the King to be the one who gave him orders. Shino didn't mind it, since it was obvious to any spy of any calibre that the King was in love with the Queen. He would do her no wrong, since it was also evident that Itachi was a calm and gentle (but still managing to be ruthless) individual.

No, that was wrong. It wasn't obvious to any spy. Only the ones trained to read the body language and emotions of others. For Shino, it was one of the areas that he excelled in. That and the masking of his own emotions, which was a much more difficult task.

He often compared people to bugs: many, with easily detected emotions, and with a ruler ruling them all. Insects were honestly quite fascinating creatures. They were unlike any other species; worked in a wholly different way. Yes, there was a reason he always compared them to humans. Every insect was so different, but in some ways they were all the same.

Although, this was where the insects differentiated from humans. Humans were selfish, greedy and power-hungry beings, unlike bugs, which who worked together in harmony towards one common goal. They judged. Shino would know. He was at the receiving end of that judgement.

When he was younger, he was bullied. Back then, there was no real reason to wear such a disguise; he did anyway, though, because he was always afraid of showing his true self. It was better for people to laugh at the fake him, than the real him. Besides, his dream was to become a spy. To his relief, that dream had quickly become fulfilled thanks to the wishes of the Queen.

They were three: Hinata, Kiba, and him. Kiba was the missing puzzle piece. Kiba was everything he wasn't: loud, out-going, smiling. Although he too, had his bad points: rash, emotional, reckless. He had ruffled brown hair, and slitted brown eyes. Kiba reminded Shino of a puppy. Maybe that was because puppies were his favourite animals (he had a dog named Akamaru).

It had been Kiba that saved Shino from those bullies. Shino could still remember the moment when Kiba told them off, and offered him a helping hand as he was lying helpless on the floor. If he had been anyone else (Sasuke, Itachi, Neji, Naruto, Kiba himself) his pride would have stopped him. But he wasn't, so his hands had shakily clasped onto Kiba's own.

It had taken a couple of years for Shino to figure out that he was in love with Kiba. At first, he was in a state of disbelief; between insects, such things did not happen! Unfortunately, he was forgetting that he was human, and no insect. But still, to love Kiba... even years later, Shino still had his doubts.

For his love was unlike anyone else's. It was silent, grievous; it was wanting to make him happy. He didn't express the need to see him everyday; as long as he could remember his face, it was all right. Shino didn't particularly feel any jealousy, nor did he feel possessive. It was just that Kiba was his saviour, and it would never be anyone else.

Shino travelled a lot. It was a given, most would say. Spies had to travel often, because of their jobs that took them around the country. While Shino had seen many places, they all looked unreasonably similar: filled with the same sorts of vastly cruel people. It made no difference to him where he was on the globe. He was positive that some things would never change.

His job, in itself, was dangerous. Many a time had Hinata fretted over his well-being and health. While Shino appreciated the sentiments, what Hinata didn't quite understand was that he was a man; one that was able to take care of himself. She had no need to worry. After all, he himself had chosen the job.

And even with the risk that came with his job, he could unabashedly say that he loved it. It was the one thing in life that he had chosen for himself: and the danger and adrenaline that came with it was irreplaceable. When he was in tough situations, without a way out... it would take those with brains to figure out ways to escape. Luckily, Shino was mostly intelligent compared to the rest of humanity.

His job was one of the only things he picked for himself. His whole life, someone had been making the decisions for him: his school, his parents (there, he blamed God), his house (King Itachi had wanted to make sure that Shino was close to him), etc. Really, the only two things that came out of his own free will were his job (which he loved so much), and Kiba.

No one had ever told him to love Kiba. Even if he shared his feelings with someone, they would most probably tell him to forget it and find a nice girl to settle down with. But that was just the problem: he didn't want a nice girl to settle down with. He loved Kiba. He loved him enough not to settle down at all, and remain unknowingly loyal throughout his life.

Shino could appreciate loyalty and fidelity. So could bugs. Treason was not something that bugs had, not really; they all belonged to one hive, and they all followed orders without questioning them. Then again, they probably lacked the intelligence to question orders. But that was beside the point: how could bugs, supposedly inferior to higher species, stay true to their purpose while humans gallivanted off into unknown tandems? It used to disgust him when he was younger, it really did. Now, he had just ceased to care. It was as simple as that.

While he knew loyalty, his father obviously didn't. Maybe the reason that he became so introverted was due to the animosity in his own home during his younger years; back when he had been young, innocent, and so, so utterly naïve. Being bullied for his natural blunder, and the source of his blunder being his father. Irony at its finest.

Yes. When he was younger, he remembered distinct images of his father off with different women. When his mother had found out, hell had arisen, and what he had called 'home' had suddenly become a rather large battle field. However, due to it being an arranged marriage, there was nothing a woman like her could do; nothing that wasn't sly and coy, at any rate.

They had stayed together, but the strain of their relationship was obvious to any outsider, never mind him. Maybe it was around then that he had become so adept at reading body language; when he had needed that skill just to survive his own home during the day.

After the increasing angst in school, he had stopped bothering to care about home any longer. It wasn't like his parents could do anything about their unwanted marriage; it was an arrangement, a good political one if he actually considered it without any bias.

It was then that realization hit him: he needed to become a spy. He then promised himself to never grow attached, and never have tedious relationships.

To an extent, that vow was broken when he fell in love with Kiba. He grew more than attached.

And yet, there wasn't really anything that anyone could do about the one-sided love: it was obvious that Kiba was in love with someone else. Shino wasn't sure he could stomach who it was, so he decided to remain in blissful ignorance. Whoever it was, Shino would support Kiba. Because to an extent, love was support. Yes. He would support Kiba.

Like the shadow that he was, and always would be.

Meh. Anyone, tell me if you can make heads or tails out of this chapter. I couldn't. Everything was so random, strewn together. Really like a shadow. There wasn't that much structure. Oh well, no matter, since this fic wasn't really popular anyway.
