Chapter Five: Our Souls Found Each Other
Harius' POV:
I looked around to make sure no one had followed me before taking out the key I had stolen from a guard out of its hiding place then turned to the gate only to smile upon seeing Gannicus appear on the other side.
The moment the gate was unlocked Gannicus pushed through and pulled me into a tight embrace and kissed me deeply.
I returned the kiss only to push from him when I felt his hand go lower.
"We should not do this." I told him as he just stared at me before reaching a hand up to hold the back of my neck.
"No. We should not." With that he pulled me into another deep kiss as he pushed me gently to the ground covering my body with his.
Gannicus lifted my robes enough to where he could gently push into me.
It was painful at first, yet pain gave way to pleasure as Gannicus began to slowly move.
Just when the man was to finish something wet hit my body causing me to open my eyes to see a sword through Gannicus' chest.
Gannicus to the would then looked to me once more before he fell to my side.
I looked up in fear when I saw my uncle looking angrier than I had ever seen before.
"It would have done you well to rememer to keep those pretty legs of yours closed." With that uncle raised the sword and plunged it towards me.
I woke with a scream trying to catch my breath.
"Harius?!" Naevia cried out rushing to my side and gently rubbed my back in comfort.
In the days after my relatives were forced from the house Naevia and I were able to become even closer. So much so she became the third person within the house to touch my being.
Gannicus and I were able to strengthen out relationship even more as well. I can honestly say that I believe the man succeeded in stealing my heart.
I can only pray he feels the same as I.
The thought of theman brought memories of the nightmare once more causing worry to fill me.
"It was just a dream Harius." Naevia said gently yet I shook head at her words.
"No. It was not a dream. It was an omen." I told her.
"All danger has been removed from villar. Your relatives and Varus to a different house unable to return while Titus draws breath. The man of his choosing should respond in kinda and soon allowing you and Gannicus to remain in each others arms without risks of separation. Perhaps the omen is mere fears of what would have happened." She said in an attempt to give comfort.
I looked to the girl yet did not speak as the dream came to mind once more.
'Perhaps it is nerves. All will be better once the man Titus chose responds. Though I cannot shake the feeling of dread.' I thought as Naevia stood once more and offered her hand. "Come. Let us see you ready for the day." I smiled at the girl before taking her hand and letting her lead me to the baths.
Quintus' POV:
"I am assulted from all fronts!" I growled to Solonius as we walked the streets of Capua. "Tullius spills blood in our own house, yet my father condemns innocent son!"
"The blame is mine. If only I had stayed a while longer…." Solonius said and I looked to the man as I shook head.
"You might have joined Gaia in untimely end. No. The fault rests with Tullius alone." I told the man as the crowd cheered loudly making us turn towards the old arena. "Listen to them. Cheering the final games of the old arena. Yet here we stand. As removed from them as Gaia from this world. Courtesy again of fucking Tullius." I told the man at my side letting my annoyance and anger show.
Solonius looked to the ground before speaking. "It appears I will be making appearance after all." I looked to the man shocked and unsure.
"You gain invitation to the games?"
"At the request of the Magistrate. A minor position, the effort far exceeding the reward." The man said and I just stared at him.
"It stirs heart to know you unscathed from association with me." I told the man as we continued to walk.
"Petronius seemed quite pleased with your offerings. Perhaps there's still opportunity for you to gain placement in the opening games of the new arena." Solonius said.
"Fuck the new arena!" I growled. "Fuck Tullius, fuck the fucking gods! (Admit it you laughed to during this scene) None of it matters now. My father gives ultimatum. Lucretia must no longer hold title of wife."
"Titus dissolves your marriage?" Solonius asked shocked.
I huffed. "That would be a kindness. He demands that I dissolve it or find myself put to street with her."
"Perhaps it is best….if she were to find another husband." I looked to Solonius shocked.
"I would sever cock from fucking body than see her from my arms." I vowed.
"I would hold the same, first, in your position." Solonius said in sympathy. "Yet it would crumble to simple reason. If you still intend to run the ludus, what other choice remains?"
I nodded at his words letting them settle in thoughts as we continued our journey through town.
MEANWHILE
Gannicus' POV:
I pulled from Hairus who had had pressed to the wall in hidden corner so that I may catch breath.
"I thought this too much risk." I questioned and Harius laughed.
"The threat is from Villar. Now Titus controls it once more and we do not need to fear."
"Then why hide?" I asked and Harius sighed.
"It is only until the man Titus has chosen answers in kind. Once it is done we may be free." He said and moved to rest head upon my shoulder. I merely pulled him closer.
"You know….there is one other who dared to win my heart." I looked to Harius shocked when he pulled back.
"I did not lie. No one save you, Varus, and now Naevia have touched me in recent memory. Yet one slave attempted to and lost many parts before he saw the shores of the afterlife." I looked to him.
"What happened?" I asked.
"It was last summer. Uncle had perchased a new slave. A Thracian. He boasted upon skills of taming such a difficult man unlike those before him. He became uncle's body slave which put him close to my being." Harius looked lost in memory as he continued. "The man would let his gaze linger upon me the more I spent in his presence. One night the slave entered my room and proclaimed his love for me. I told him it could not be possible yet he would hear none of it. He vowed to take me from my relatives and would provide for me if I only gave him the chance." Harius looked up to me then.
"I nearly let his words take hold. I was about to give voice on the matter when uncle suddenly appeared and dragged the poor man off to his fate. His screams could be heard for days before he finally went silent." Harius said with a shiver.
I thought on his words before tightening my hold upon him. "The Thracian was a fool for ever believing himself able to protect you." Harius turned a smirk to me.
"And you are able?" I smirked back.
"I am able to do many things if you would but allow demonstration." I said and laughed when he hit my chest and pulled from me.
"Ever the fool." He huffed.
"Yes. Ever the fool." I repeated before pulling in for another kiss.
We kissed for a few precious moments before Harius pulled from me and traced my injuries gently.
"Do they yet cause pain?" he asked and I shook head.
"I feel no pain when I am with you." I told him causing blush to appear.
Titus' voice was suddenly heard making both of us peak around corner to see the man speaking with Oenomaus.
"I must return. If Titus knows I delayed you in training he will not be pleased." Harius said kissing me once more before taking off quickly into the Villar.
I watched him go with a happy sigh before making presence known once more.
Titus' POV:
"What do you make Dagan?" I asked the man at my side.
"Size and skill an advantage. If dull wit can be honed, he will prove asset." Oenomaus said and I nodded at his words.
I turned and noticed Gannicus walking towards us righting himself. Confused I looked around and caught a brief glimpse of Harius' robes as he rushed towards the stairs.
I looked to the man knowingly before Oenomaus spoke up. "Gannicus. Work the palus, if you are able." Gannicus nodded to his brother before going off to do as commanded.
"Schemes plotted while back is turned. And there stands the results."
"Apologies, Dominus." I looked to the man and huffed.
"You but did as commanded. The burden lies with errant son, cast adrift upon churning sea of impropriety." I sneered as we stopped our brief walk we had begun.
"I would navigate this house towards calmer waters, your hands to aid me." I asked my dear friend who nodded.
"Speak, and see them set to task." I nodded myself before looking to the men training.
"A good count of these men were acquired in my absence. Arrange competition, so that I may determine true worth of all beneath my roof." Oenomaus nodded before looking towards someone.
"Our champion should be absent such contest, until recovery."
"I hold no man campion until proven so to my eyes." I told my friend looking to the man who had claimed dear Harius' heart. "Those who stand victorious at ranking's end will find honored position within these walls. Those who do not will be sold to the mines." Oenomaus looked to me shocked.
"Harsh reward, for men already bearing own mark."
I huffed. "I remain unconvinced all here are deserving of it." I said before placing hand upon the man's shoulder. "You are clear to purpose?" Oenomaus nodded and I patted his shoulder before walking from my men as Oenomaus prepared them for contest.
Upon entering I found Naevia and called for the girl who paused to look to me. "Where is Lucretia?"
"I will fetch her Dominus." She said and made to leave yet I stopped her.
"No, leave her where she is. You may answer question. Has salt and spelt been scattered?" I asked the girl.
"Yes, Dominus. We swept it from the Villar." I nodded at her as I moved to leave once more.
"A step towards proper path." I said once more.
LATER THAT EVENING
Harius' POV:
I stood with Titus watching the men in contest wondering what Titus had planned for doing such things.
Every so often during the battles Gannicus would spare a glimpse up to me and I would smile each time I met his gaze.
"You lose caution with each day longer relation stays alive." Titus said and I looked to him.
"I but offer the man support during contest. One which could send him to mines according to your word." I said growling slightly.
Titus smirked. "All but Gannicus shall see the mines should they not prove worthy." I looked to the man confused.
"What of Gannicus should he not see victory?" Titus turned a knowing smile to me.
"A fate that would see all happier in the coming days." Confusion still settled in thoughts yet Quintus spoke up before I could question further.
"What is this?" he asked walking to my side.
"Contest, to rank the men."
"My decision yet to be given voice, and you proceed as if I am already absent." Quintus growled to his father.
"This house must be turned to order, regardless of whether you happen upon your senses." Titus told his son.
"Lucretia is my wife!" Quintus growled and I looked to him confused once more.
"A word that should lift a man, filling his life with ease and children. She gives you neither." Titus spoke.
"You seek to tear heart from chest and expect gratitude it no longer beats."
"I seek only to call you son, absent shame in the title." Titus told his son quickly turning to him.
Quintus just stared at his father. "And I only ever wished to make you proud, father." With that Quintus left us upon the balcony.
"The rankings will be decided at contest's end, two days hence. I will grant you equal time to prove that you have moved beyond past transgressions. Dissolve your marriage….or call me father no more." Quintus glared at his father before glaring at me and storming off.
THAT NIGHT
Harius' POV:
As I walked through the halls I could hear Quintus and Lucretia arguing, most likely of what his father spoke of when on balcony, and chose to ignore the couple with thoughts of a certain man filling mind.
I smiled at the thought of Gannicus and quickened my steps urging my feet to carry me to him faster.
Upon reaching the ludus I made sure none saw me before rushing to the man's door and quickly passing through it.
I turned to watch Gannicus rise from his bed and instantly pull me to him for a kiss when standing.
"Breath is taken from me each time I watch you enter a room." Gannicus said as he pulled from me.
I smiled as I ran hand through his hair.
"I have earned to hold you as such since we last parted. To see you and have you so close within these walls yet be so limited to feel your touch is torture." I admitted to the man who placed his hands upon my face to make me look to him.
"Soon such limitations will be erased forever. We must suffer long enough for Titus' chosen to respond. Once word has been given we will be free. It must be before primus so word will be read and spoken soon." I sighed and connect our foreheads upon hearing his words.
"It is still too long a wait." Gannicus laughed as he gently pulled me to the bed to lay us down wrapping his arm around me.
"For now we may bask in each other touch. Let us not think of such issues when we have each other now." I smiled at the man and moved closer to rest my head upon his chest to listen to his strong and steady heart as I drifted to sleep.
NEXT MORNING
Harius' POV:
We watched the men in contest as one man used the Retuarius skill rather well.
"Gnaeus continues to gain in skill as Retiarius." Quintus boasted of his man. "Soon he will ignite the crowd, as I promised."
"Apologies for the hour of my rising. Sleep came with difficulty last night." Lucretia said and I turned to see the stress and pain hidden in the woman's eyes and I felt sympathy for her.
"Your absence was not noticed." Titus said and I sent a small glare to the man who continued to watch the men below.
"Yet the apology stands."
"A noble gesture, well appreciated." Quintus said defending wife.
Titus finally turned to the woman and glared. "The mulsum more so."
"Let me fill you cup." Lucretia offered walking to fill a cup with honeyed-wine.
"Perhaps you are too strict on the woman." I wished to the man who looked to me.
"I see not a woman but a snake. One who must prove she is of human flesh." He responded accepting the cup when offered as we turned to watch Crixus' duel.
"Crixus appears of a form, does he not?" Quintus asked as the fight continued and I was impressed with how far the Gaul had come.
Yet I kept my gaze on a much more worthy man who also did not care to hide his gaze upon me.
"He has proven a wise addition. One Gaia favored from first sight." She spoke and I did turn to offer a comforting smile to the woman who returned it in kind.
"Apologies. Tullius arrives." Naevia spoke making all look to her.
"Tullius?" Quintus growled.
"See him to my office." Titus spoke making to leave.
"What is that man doing in our house?" Lucretia questioned and Titus glared at her.
"My house. And he comes in response to invitation." Titus looked to me and smiled. "Come. I believe this is a conversation you will wish to hear." I looked to Quintus and Lucretia confused before moving to follow the older man making sure Naevia was at my side.
Quintus' POV:
"Tullius should be hurled from fucking cliffs. Instead my father takes knee to swallow cock." I growled to my wife watching he and Harius leave.
"And you do nothing to stop him." Lucretia said. I looked to her and sighed. "Save lay blame where none should rest."
"I am a fool in such regard." I told her gently moving to fully face her. "Allowing frustration to strip sense from tongue." I admitted.
"And spilling truth as consequence?" I growled at her response.
"I would not hurt you." I vowed as she looked down and I growled even louder. "Oh, everything spins from fucking control."
We went silent for a moment watching the men in contest. "You desire a son of your own." I looked to her then to see a sad smile upon face. "To carry your name and make you proud. I would do anything to give you such a treasure."
I sighed stepping closer to her. "I must give my answer tomorrow. It is too late for such dreams." I told her as we turned to watch Crixus take his victory.
"It is never too late. When will set to purpose." Lucretia spoke and I looked to her.
"What would you have me do?"
"Whatever we must to rid ourselves of the problem." She said and I understood her wish then.
MEANWHILE
Harius' POV:
"I recalled your fondness for mulsum. Varus assures me the vintage to be his finest." Tullius said turning a smirk to me which I met with a glare to hide the shiver that laced my body.
"I am plied with honeyed wine at every turn this day." Titus said turning to face us as he handed the jar to a slave.
"A simple gesture. To smooth edge from jagged events."
"Jagged?" Titus questioned with a glare. "A woman is dead, Tullius. A roman woman, in my house. You go too far." Titus growled.
"I have come to make amends with a gift." I glared at the heartless man then.
"You offer wine to wash away blood?" I spoke for Titus making Tullius look to me.
"I offer positon. In the opening games of the new arena." Tullius spoke to me before looking to Titus.
"Why would you do this?"
"In honor of history." Tullius answered. "Capua has marveled over many champions from the House of Batiatus over the years." The man walked past Titus then before continuing. "The storied victories of your men were part of the old arena as much as its wood and sand." Titus turned to face the man and I slowly moved to stand closer to Titus. "Yet, its final day passed absent House of Batiatus. An unforgivable tragedy. Caused by the actions of a foolish son."
"He knows my mind towards this regard. Yet his actions do not stand alone in deserving condemnation." Titus said and I felt joy in knowing he did not fully blame his son for what transpired here.
"The past cannot be changed." Was all Tullius offered in response. "Let us turn eye towards horizon of glories untold. Ones to be shared in together."
"And what is it you seek in return for such generosity?"
"The only thing I have ever sought. The one thing I was promised. Gannicus." I tensed at his response and looked to Titus silently begging for this to not transpire.
"My son believes the man a champion. Above all others." Titus said and I began to relax until Tullius moved closer to Titus.
"You are a reasonable man, Titus. You always have been. All I ask is that you consider what is best for your house."
"He already has." A new voice spoke making all look to a rather handsome man with dirty blonde hair and blue eyes with tanned skin. He appeared tall and well-toned.
"Good Cato a true honor indeed." Tullius said with a bow and I looked to Titus shocked who merely smirked. "To what do we owe the pleasure of your presence?"
"I have come to receive my intended and the payment for taking him." Tullius looked to me while I just looked between Cato and Titus.
"I believed the boy for Varus? Varus spoke of his excitement to own such a treasure." I shivered at his words and stepped closer to Titus.
"What he failed to mention is I paid both he and Harius' family to allow myself to pick his intended. Good Cato is a dear friend of mine and happily agreed….but not for free."
"And what is it the man asked for?" Tullius questioned.
Titus smirked. "Gannicus." Tullius and I looked to the man I shock as I felt my hopes rising.
"You would turn from our bargin in exchange to aid in this whore's future?!" I glared at the man as did the other two in the room.
"Harius is no whore. He is the son of a late friend of mine and I will see him properly taken care of this time. I was not able to when he was still a child. I will do so now when he stands ready for marriage according to his relatives. Cato has a better standing in the eyes of the Senate and wealthier than Varus. He shall see to Harius' proper care. Gannicus is a small loss compared to that treasured thought." Titus said and Tullius glared at the man.
"Choose wisely good Titus. You may pick a path you cannot turn from." Titus merely smirked.
"Thank you for the wine." Tullius glared before smiling and bowing.
"Such a shame. It appears I have lost this round. Enjoy the wine good Titus." Tullius stormed from the office then.
Once it was apparent the man was no longer in sight I turned to Titus and threw my arms around the shocked man.
"Gratitude does not express my true feelings well enough." I cried into the man's shoulder as he slowly wrapped his arms around me.
"Now you know that, regardless of victory or defeat, Gannicus will not see the mines. Nor will he ever again see this Villar unless accompanying you of course." I laughed and pulled from the man before turning to properly meet Atticus Cato.
"Apologies for my behavior just now. I found it hard to suppress my excitement." Cato smiled as he shook head.
"None required. I can understand how this must bring you such joy. Know I am asking for Gannicus not just for you but so I may have a true champion within my walls. I must admit without Gannicus I would not be able to take the deal. I have my own chosen partner at home waiting for me. I wish to marry her one day." I smiled at the man.
"Perhaps in a few years we will both see us married to our chosen ones. Gratitude, still, for aiding Gannicus and I. I did not think such a chance was possible." Cato smiled.
"Our marriage is public only as I am sure you are aware. From prying eyes I pray we may grow to be good friends." I smiled even brighter already liking the man as I nodded.
"I would like that as well good Cato. I am looking forward to meeting your partner. I am sure she's as wonderful as you."
"No. She is better." He said looking to Titus. "I shall allow Gannicus to fight in the arena for you should you wish it then we shall set out the following morn." Titus smiled.
"I would be honored. And I thank you for giving my house position in the opening games."
"Tullius stands correct on one matter, the opening of the new arena would not stand complete without the House of Batiatus. I shall see to it that you are a part of the historical day."
"Gratitude for your words. I will see to it my slaves aid in getting you settled for your stay. My house is your house. Feel free to do with it as you wish." Titus said before turning to me. "Gannicus should be finished with his fight soon. Perhaps Gannicus will enjoy the news as well." I smiled brighter and hugged the man once more before bowing to Cato and rushing off to wait for Gannicus to finish contest to share in the amazing news.
Gannicus' POV:
As my fight Barca quickly drew to an end I paused long enough to see Harius standing not upon the balcony but with a guard near the tables smiling brightly at me.
I smiled back which nearly let Barca see victory but I quickly regained advantage and pushed the man onto the ground hit his shield over and over.
"Gannicus!" I paused and looked to Oenomaus. "You are victor." I spit blood out and walked towards Harius.
"I nearly had you." I turned to a smirking Barca and smirked back.
"Nearly." I spoke and moved closer to Harius.
"Titus wishes to have words with you." He spoke when others looked to us.
"I shall follow you to him then." I said not breaking character.
When out of sight of the others Harius told the guard to leave us before he suddenly pulled me into an eager kiss.
I pulled back with a laugh. "Whatever it is that causes such a good mood I pray happens every day if it causes you to kiss as such." Harius laughed as well holding my face within his hands and pulling it closer to his own.
"I believe our days are about to be filled with nothing but peace." I looked to Harius confused as his smile grew and he ran a hand through my hair.
"Atticus Cato is within these very walls as we speak." I looked to Harius shocked before pulling him closer.
"And his answer?" tears sprang to his eyes as he laughed.
"We are both to leave upon the morning after the primus with Cato to his Villar." It took a moment before his words took hold and I pulled him into a deep kiss.
I pulled from Harius and held him tight. "I am to come with you? Regardless on if I see victory in contest?" I asked willing to lose if needed.
"Win or lose you will become a gladiator for Cato. The price for taking me as a spouse. Titus felt the price a fair one."
"Then he holds all the honor in my eyes." I said pushing Harius up against the wall to deepen the kiss.
"Atticus allows you to fight in the arena for this house. The reason for our delayed departure." Harius spoke as we pulled from each other to catch breath.
"Then I will make sure to show the man he will never regret keeping us together as he has." I vowed kissing Harius once more.
"I must return to the others and prepare my things for the journey. I will send Naevia to you to collect any possessions you wish to take and I shall see them safely packed as well." I smiled and ran a hand along his face.
"I am leaving with you. Anything other possession pales in comparison." Harius blushed before kissing me once more and rushing to prepare for our leaving.
I watched him go with a heart more light than I ever thought possible as I rejoined my brothers.
I returned in time to watch Asher injure his own brother's eye permanently.
"Asher, fucking victor!" the bastard cried out holding his sword up in victory.
"Rest," Dominus called gaining our attention, "and tend wounds. Tomorrow brings end of contest. And appropriate reckoning." I noticed Harius had returned to the balcony and shared a knowing smile with him. Titus turned to leave with Quintus not far behind. Domina followed her husband and Harius lingered for a moment longer before turning to follow the others into the Villar once more.
I looked to my brothers and noticed two leading Dagon to the medicus. I then turned gaze to Oenomaus who was gazing at me with a questioning look.
I stared at the man for a moment before retiring to my chambers for the day.
MEANWHILE
Quintus' POV:
"I would have words." I told father ceasing him from leaving as he turned to me.
"As would I. Accompany me to town, and let us break them." He said turning to prepare to leave.
I looked to my wife once more before following the man out of the house.
AT THE OLD ARENA
Quintus' POV:
"My very first memories," father began as we entered the old arena, "were formed within this arena. Attending the games as a child, upon my father's knee. Too young to yet form words." Father knelt and picked up a handful of sand. "Yet even then I knew. That I would give my life to this place."
"A noble calling." I told him as he looked to me as he stood.
"One I had dreamed you would share in." I just looked upon my father.
"Was I raised here as well? Upon your knee?"
"You were. I fear it is the one thing we hold common now." Father said.
"And you stand me at fault. As you always have."
"I stand you accountable for your actions." Father growled which forced him into a fit as he turned back to me. "You have caused much heartache. Never heeding my words. Fighting me at every turn," I glared at father and looked through the rubble below me, "your ambition the bolt hurled against my wishes."
I picked a piece up and turned to glare at father once more as I straightened. "And here is where it has led. Two men at constant odds. Mired in the ruins of what might have been. Ruins I aided in creation."
I began to slowly walk towards father as he continued. "I wanted you to join me here, to see them buried. You are my so, Quintus. And I will always love you." His words caused me to cease my movements and stare at his back in shock. "No matter the path you take."
I collected myself before I spoke. "What moves such downpour, after eternal drought?"
Father turned to me and walked closer. "Atticus Cato makes offer. One better than that of Tullius. Position in the opening games." I looked to father unsure of what was to be said next.
"At what price?"
"Gannicus." I huffed and looked from the man knowing the cause behind his agreement was the brat within my Villar.
'He truly caused the trouble I feared he would.' I thought before looking to father. "And your response?"
"Without meaning, if you are not by my side upon the day's arrival." I stared at the man.
"You give me until tomorrow, and yet now press for answer?"
"A day, a year, a man either knows his heart or he does not." I just looked to father. "Stand with me. And we shall rise together, huh?"
"I will not turn from my wife." I vowed.
Father looked to me saddened before sighing. "You really did not want this life, did you?" he questioned. "Well whatever one you find in this world, I pray it brings you peace." He said placing hand upon shoulder as he walked from me.
"Father," I called turning to the man holding the piece of wood for him to see. Father looked between it and me in curious fear as I just looked at the wood. I sighed before holding it to him, "a memento." Father took it from me and watched as I left the area. "Of days past." Was the last thing I told father before I left the arena.
BACK AT THE VILLAR
Quintus' POV:
I found my wife within the baths and she looked to me upon hearing me enter. "I could not do it." I admitted.
Lucretia smiled. "Sit beside me." She said. I removed my clothing and slowly entered the baths. "I had the instrument in hand. His back was turned. One simple motion, and our troubles removed forever." When I reached my wife I sat beside her once she made room. "But when the moment came….he spoke to me with affection. Giving voice to sentiment."
"I was wrong to push you to such thoughts against him." Lucretia spoke softly. "Some actions carry too steep a price"
"Even in refraining, the ground beneath us pitches. Tomorrow we must prepare to leave this house."
"You've given your answer?" Lucretia asked and I looked to her.
"The only one my tongue could ever speak." I told her.
She looked to me shocked. "You honor me."
I huffed. "I attempt to gain the sun, only to plunge into the depths. While this Atticus Cato rides with Apollo, bribing his way with promises of happier days for a boy who could not keep legs shut."
"It does not matter." Lucretia said and I sighed looking to her.
"We must leave this house. With nothing but our clothes, a few possessions. Not even a slave to attend us. We have lost everything." I told her.
"Not everything." She said and I turned a smile to her as I rested my head against hers.
NEXT MORNING
Titus' POV:
"It pains to lose Dagon." I told Oenomaus as I looked at the list he brought. "The Syrian had shown much promise."
"Yet Dagan is now blind to attack from the right." My friend said and I sighed.
"Well, let us shift from the unfortunate to the blessed. Who holds the pinnacle?"
"Two men own equal victory. Crixus and Gannicus. They are to face each other in the final contest."
"Oh, Gannicus is removed from contention. Atticus Cato already holds claim over the man. He does not wish for his new gladiator to come to him in poor conditions." I said sticking the story Atticus created when this moment arose.
"Gannicus is to go with Cato?" Oenomaus asked in surprise looking to his wife as she entered the room.
"Well, he makes offer. I had thoughts towards refusal, but they have dimmed. Cato has agreed to marry young Hairus in exchange for Gannicus. Such actions will keep the boy from the hands of Varus."
"I would speak towards reigniting them." Oenomaus said and I looked to him shocked.
"You would condemn a poor boy for the sake of keeping dearest friend within reach?"
"Apologies, Dominus, my words were spoken too hastily. I only meant Gannicus proves to be a valuable asset to this house. Selling him would cause grave wound. Perhaps there is another way to get Cato to agree to marriage absent Gannicus." Oenomaus said and I looked to my friend.
"I am sorry my friend, but Gannicus is the only payment he will accept. I simply cannot risk Harius falling into the hands of the likes of Varus."
Oenomaus looked to me before nodding. "Dominus." He spoke before walking off.
THAT EVENING
I was heading to take a drink of water when I notice Harius motioning me to him.
I looked to make sure none had noticed before sneaking off to his side and pulling him into our hidden corner.
"What is it?" I asked slightly worried as Harius has hardly ever risked meeting me with so many men around.
Harius merely smiled and kissed me gently. "I wanted to wish you luck in your match. And to offer advice."
"Oh?" I asked amused.
"You are to battle Crixus. Regardless of outcome you are to go with me to Atticus' Villar. I come to ask you allow Crixus to see victory." I looked to him confused.
"You wish me to willingly be defeated?"
"Crixus has often spoken to you of his goal of gaining title of champion has he not?" Harius asked and I nodded. "Once the primus have ended you are no longer a gladiator of the house. Why not allow Crixus to prove himself worthy of take up the title in your place?" he asked and I thought for a moment before sighing and pulling Harius close.
"I will not make it easy." Harius laughed.
"I would be disappointed if you did." I smirked and kissed his head before gently pushing him towards the stairs.
"You must return before they come searching." Harius kissed me once more before rushing up the stairs and I moved to join my brothers without them noticing my absence.
I returned just in time to see Titus appear open the balcony. "Doctore. Let us begin. And see who is truly champion of this house." Oenomaus nodded before moving to get the gladiators attention.
"Crixus! Gannicus! Take position!" he called out just as Harius returned to Titus' side.
I looked up to his beautiful form as his words returned to memory.
"A second chance to prove myself against you," Crixus said and I looked to him, "the gods have heard my prayers."
"And they curse you in the answering." I told him playing my part as I gazed to Harius once more then got into position.
Harius' POV: (To make it easier just know from this moment on the chapter is only in Harius' POV)
I watched Gannicus prepare himself just before the battle began with Crixus making first move.
I watched the battle holding my breath praying Gannicus came out unharmed as much as he was able.
"Father." I turned to see Quintus standing at the entrance. "We are near ready to leave." Lucretia appeared from behind her husband wearing the red wig Gaia had lost her life wearing.
I stared at both before turning back to the match no longer caring what happens to the bastard behind me.
"Pause a moment. And see contest ended." Titus said still watching the match.
"Finish preparations." Lucretia ordered and I turned to see Naevia running off to do as Lucretia commanded.
"Crixus again shows form." Quintus said causing me to look back to the match.
"As does Gannicus." I looked to Titus to see him smirking in my direction and I blushed before looking from the man. "Both men you have often praised." Titus turned to his son once more. "Perhaps you have learned something after all these years."
"Perhaps." Quintus said as Titus turned back to the match. "A match for the ages. I shall miss this." Quintus spoke. Before Titus could respond a harsh fit attacked causing him to cough uncontrollably.
"Water." He asked and Melitta instantly got him a cup. The water seemed to calm the man as he once more turned to the match.
All stood quiet as we watched before a new voice was heard.
"Your man is truly of a form. It pleases me to know he shall soon represent my house." I looked to Atticus and smiled at the man.
"Gratitude once more for also accepting Gannicus." Atticus looked to me.
"I am doing it as much for myself as I am you. Gannicus is a man all wish to have under their name. I am lucky enough to aid in your rescue and gain Gannicus as well. Perhaps, once you have gained a strong reputation, you may free Gannicus and pursue an open relation with the man upon our dissolved marriage in a few years." I beamed at the idea and nodded in agreement.
"Nothing would make me happier." I told the man already knowing we would grow to be close in the coming days.
I turned to the battle once more to see Gannicus was truly not making it easy for Crixus. For a moment it appeared he was going to see victory yet Gannicus caught my gaze and allowed his guard down long enough for Crixus to see his victory.
I smiled proudly at the man and looked to Quintus as he spoke.
"I would not thought it possible."
"To be said of many things this day." Titus said before coughing once more. "Quintus. It is not too late-." Titus was suddenly in an uncontrollable coughing fit and I rushed to the man's side in worry. The moment I touched the man's shoulder he clasped barely giving me moment to catch his weight.
"Father." Quintus said rushing to our side. "Fetch the medicus." He commanded and Melitta rushed from the area.
Quintus moved to aid me in standing the man up and getting him to his bed where he was gently placed.
I stayed close to the man until the medicus arrived and I moved to stand at Quintus' side to allow room.
The medicus placed his hand upon Titus' head before turning to Quintus. "Your father burns high fever. A worrisome condition for a man of his years."
"Well, is there nothing that can be done?" Quintus asked.
"I have not the herbs. And the hour is late for us to procure them." Quintues looked to his wife who nodded at him.
"Go. I'll watch over him."
"I'll pound on every door in Capua until we have what is needed."
"And I would aid in the effort." Oenomaus offered.
"And be welcomed for it. Come." Both men rushed off and the medicus turned to us. "Keep him still until our return. A little wine, if seized by fit." Medicus said before rushing after Quintus.
"He is a stubborn fool, Titus is, he will make it through this." Atticus said.
I merely nodded at his words and moved to aid Lucretia in caring for the closest thing to family I had left.
A FEW HOURS LATER
As I gently rubbed the cooled cloth across his head Lucretia stood to pour the man some wine.
She returned to his side and held it out to the man. "Drink." She said softly.
"Move Tullius' wine from sight." Titus commanded and I shared a small smile with Lucretia as she set the wine down.
Lucretia looked to me before handing over a bowl.
"The water is dirtied and running low. Would you mind fetching more so we may aid in cooling his fever?" she asked.
I stared at the woman unsure before nodding and taking the bowl rushing off to fetch fresh water.
As I getting the water Atticus approached me.
"Any change?" I sighed.
"None. I pray they return in time with proper supplies. The thought of losing him breaks heart." I told the man who nodded and placed a hand upon shoulder.
"I am sure they will return soon and Titus will be back to his stubborn ways soon." I smiled at the man before quickly looking towards Titus' chambers upon hearing a scream.
Atticus and I shared a look before rushing back to the room only to pause in shock upon seeing Lucretia crying over the man's body.
"No!" I gasped covering my mouth and backing from the room as I felt tears slowly falling.
"What has happened?!" Atticus demanded.
"I offered him wine as instructed by medicus when fit suddenly took hold. He would not stop his thrashing! Blood spilt from his mouth and he suddenly stopped breathing!" Lucretia cried out and I just stared at the man upon the bed in shock unable to think of proper words at moment.
I looked to the jar before glaring at it.
"Tulluis." I growled causing all to look to me. "The bastard gifted Titus with wine only yesterday claiming it was to offer peace once more. The bastard poisoned Titus!" I growled and Atticus stood and rub my arm in comfort before turning to Lucretia.
"Is that the wine you offered?" she nodded and continued to sob. "We will make sure justice is paid." Atticus growled before turning gaze to the doors as they opened to allow Quintus and Oenomaus to rush towards us.
Quintus stopped upon seeing wife crying over his father before slowly moving to join her and placed his hands over Titus' folded ones as the other went around his wife.
"How did this happen?!" Quintus growled as Atticus repeated was I just spoke.
Quintus growled and smashed the jar upon the ground. "He will be avenged!" he growled before storming off demanding funeral preparations begin.
EIGHT DAYS LATER
I stood near Quintus watching the man as he stared at his father's corpse.
Looking to Titus I felt my heart restrict once more knowing such an honorable and kind man was no longer among the living.
The people around us sent sympathy gazes towards the younger Batiatus and I watched as the Magistrate himself walked up to Quintus. "It is a heavy thing." The Magistrate spoke softly. "To see a father, so strong in life, unable to rise."
"The weight of it keenly felt." Quintus said not removing gaze from his father.
"Titus was much loved by this city." Magistrate said looking to Quintus who finally looked to the man. "Hold comfort in the knowledge." Quintus nodded as the man left his side.
The Magistrate caught my gaze and bowed his head causing me to do the same as he merged into the crowd.
"The Magistrate himself pays respect?" Lucretia said moving to her husband's side. "It's a great honor."
"For my father." Quintus spoke. "Years I wished for blistering tongue to cool. Only to long for it to scorch ear once more."
"I know you did not wish him gone in such a manner." Lucretia spoke in comfort. "Nor did I, despite our many differences. Yet the gods have willed it."
"The gods had no fucking hand in this. Tullius' alone inflicts injury." Quintus growled and I made to go comfort the man yet paused upon seeing uncle moving to me.
"That old man is no longer around to protect you. Do prepare for original plan to bloom once more." He whispered in ear.
I backed from the man and glared. "Titus' last act and wish was for me to marry Atticus. It would do you well to remember an honorable man's wishes when he is unable to voice them anymore." I whispered back.
Varinius smirked before pointing at my arm. "If you truly believed yourself free you would no longer wear that mark." He said and I looked to it before glaring at him. "Deep down, you know it was wishful dreams of the young mind to marry one such as Atticus." He said then turned gaze to his side and I looked to see Varus wearing blacks, as we all were, yet lust filled his eyes when gaze landed upon me. "Varus has missed the feel of your skin." Varinius spoke walking from me leaving me to my thoughts.
'No. I will not let that bastard get inside head! He merely wishes to strike fear into my heart. Titus and Atticus already came to agreement. Quintus will surely honor his father's last wish.' I thought and forced myself to calm as I looked once more to the mourning couple.
Suddenly Solonius appeared at Quintus' side. "Apologies. Unwelcomed guest makes appearance." We all looked to see who it was Solonius spoke of walking into the Villar.
I growled before walking up to Lucretia. "Vettius." Quintus growled.
"The bastard has balls for coming on such a day." I growled to Lucretia who nodded as we followed Quintus as he made way to the boy.
"Temper emotion, and greet him with measured voice. It would serve no purpose to have confrontation here in front of the Magistrate." Lucretia warned as Vettius paused before us.
"Good Batiatus." Vettius spoke looking the man up and down. "My sympathy for the passing of your father. A titan, standing far above all who follow."
"You come absent Tullius?" Quintus questioned ignoring the boy's words. "I thought nothing could keep the man from observance of such a tragedy."
"He confers with dignitaries from Antioch."
"Antioch?" Solonius questioned.
"He is engaged in business there, to the further glory of the Republic. He sends regret that he could not be present." Vettius paused and looked to me causing me to tense. "And a reminder, that bargain was struck with your father before he passed. Concerning the sale of Gannicus."
"You dare broach subject on such a fucking day?!" Quintus growled stepping towards the boy yet Lucretia held him back.
"We have respectfully waited for eight of them to pass. Your period of mourning comes to conclusion." Quintus calmed enough that Lucretia released her hold as the bastard continued. "Tomorrow the sun greets a ninth day, and with it we expect delivery of Gannicus."
Quintus huffed. "You think father did not share news of sale turning to Atticus Cato's hands instead of Tullius'?" Vettius appeared shocked upon hearing his words. "I will never allow a man such a Tullius to buy Gannicus! My father broke bargain before his passing and I will honor such actions!" Quintus stepped closer to get in the boy's face. "Turn desire to piss and shit, and see yourselves well satisfied."
"The Tullius will be forced to withdraw offer to include your men in the opening games of the new arena."
"Then it will be under my request that his men are upon its sands." We all looked to see Atticus walking through the crowd. "Titus stood as dear friend to me. I will see to it the man's name is properly remembered and honored upon its sands." I smiled at the man who returned his own before looking to the bastard once more.
"You have your answer. Do make sure Tullius hears it." I spoke. Vettius looked between us all before storming out of the house.
"Gratitude." Quintus told Atticus when Vettius had left.
"None required. I but honor a man worthy of it." He said before walking to my side. "We shall break words later." He whispered within ear and I nodded as he continued back into the crowd.
I watched the man go before feeling a gaze and turning in its direction to see Varus smirking at me.
I glared at the man and stormed off further from him.
Fighting the feeling of dread with each step I took.
I feet had led me close to Gannicus' chambers and I quickly and quietly entered them after making sure no one had seen.
I turned to see the man sitting upon his bed and had yet turned to meet gaze.
I sighed and moved to sit by the man and placed hand upon shoulder.
"The man was never fond me of, and I admit I did not care for him at times, yet he was an honorable man." Gannicus spoke finally looking up to me. "One who aided in our relationship when could have easily ended our lives." I held his face within my hand and smiled.
"The man was the closest thing to family that I had. He was a dear friend to my father. He was not able to claim me as his own when I was still small so he fought for my happiness now with the means he held in possession." I told him as he covered my hand with his much larger one.
"I have already vowed to the man to keep you safe. To keep your smile forever present. I will not fail him." I smiled before leaning in to offer a gentle kiss.
We jumped quickly from each other when there was banging upon the door.
"Dominus calls for the men." Oenomaus called softly and we looked to each other in fear.
"Give moment, brother, so I may collect myself properly." Gannicus called.
It was silent before Oenomaus sighed.
"See to it quickly then." With that we heard the man leave from the door and I looked to Gannicus.
"I must go. Quickly." Gannicus nodded and after one last kiss he opened the door for me and we looked to make sure we were alone before I rushed from the man's side quickly.
Luckily I found Quintus, who just stared at me knowingly, and I rushed to his side to avoid suspicion.
"See to it the preparations are completed quickly." Quintus told the guard who bowed and rushed to do as ordered.
"The burning is to take place soon, I would have you upon balcony. I would hate for you to become lost and cause suspicion. Atticus is at the balcony. Stay at his side." Quintus spoke softly.
I nodded at the man and rushed off to find Atticus while the burning was prepared.
I found Atticus and moved to the man's side just as the gladiators formed a square around Quintus who began to speak.
"We have known the agony of heart ripped yet beating from sundered chest. And yet here we stand." The man said looking to his men. "The House of Batiatus is no stranger to misfortune. To the cruel whims of the gods, and base men that would position themselves as such. And yet. Here we stand." Quintus cried out.
"This house is built atop unshakable foundation of honor and respect. And in no man were these qualities more evident than Titus Lentulus Batiatus." Quintus looked to his father before returning gaze to his men. "I will laud my father's memory by seeing the House of Batiatus elevated beyond the imaging of my ancestors. I will need all of you to see it done. Men of hard purpose and desire." He paused here to look among the men.
"Let previous decisions fall aside. None among you will be sent to the mines, regardless of standing!" even from here I could see the relief in many faces. Accept for the Syrian. He appeared to have fear in his eyes which deserved to be there based on the words Gannicus spoke to me of what he has done to his own blood. "The sun has set on an era. Let us celebrate the name Titus Lentulus Batiatus with drink and clash of swords! Their sound to carry my father to the afterlife!" Oeomaus stepped forward and swung his whip.
"Take position!" he called as a few men, including Crixus and Gannicus, stepped forward.
Gannicus did not turn to meet my gaze and I was grateful as too many eyes were upon the sands now. "Spill blood upon the sand, yet live to one day die with glory and honor in the arena!" Quintus cried out then looked to Oenomaus who once more stepped forward to hand the torch over to Quintus.
The two shared a moment before Oenomaus released the torch fully so Quintus could turn to his father for the last time. Quintus paused for but a moment before placing torch upon the wood.
"Begin." Oenomaus commanded and the men began to fight as Titus' body was slowly engulfed by flame.
I watched the man's body burn and once more felt the sense of dread fill me for reasons I did not know. I turned gaze to the men and watched Gannicus fight with pain and anger in his eyes that match all those upon the sands as an honorable man who put to rest.
When the fire died and the smoke cleared the matches ended as the crowd slowly left the Villar while Quintus, Lucretia, Atticus, and I all headed for what was now Quintus' office.
Quintus placed parchment upon desktop and side. "This is all that remains. When the smoke clears and the embers die. The sum total of a man's life." Quintus spoke as he lifted a parchment and turned gaze to Atticus and I. "This was my father's last act before his death. A bill of sale, transferring Gannicus ownership and Harius' hand in marriage to Atticus Cato. One he wished honored above all others." Quintus spoke and moved to stand before us.
"I shall honor my own terms and allow Gannicus to fight as your man one last time in the opening games of the new arena." Atticus said and Quintus nodded before sighing.
"Gratitude. Your words bring much comfort on such a dreary day. Yet…." Atticus and I looked to each other before turning back to Quintus. "I wish to raise the name Batiatus to heights no man has yet breached. To do so I will need a man who is already champion in the eyes of the crowd." Fear entered me upon hearing the man's words.
"You would go against your father's last act and wish?" Atticus growled.
"I but wish to change the terms to benefit us both." Quintus said.
"Your meaning?"
"I cannot give you Gannicus fully, I need him to raise this house, yet perhaps we may share the man. Call ourselves both his Dominus. He may fight for both houses."
"Would that not confuse the crowd? It would also slow your progression of elevating this house." Atticus said and I was not liking the way this conversation was headed.
"True enough….then perhaps I will forever pay for your men's needs. Their training, weapons, health, name it and it shall fall from my purse."
"If money is what I sought I would have taken Harius moment I was within this house." Atticus said and I could see anger entering his eyes. "You know of the other reason for my taking Gannicus." Atticus said as both men looked to me.
Quintus kept his gaze upon me as he spoke. "Harius will always be welcomed within this house. Never has to make announcement. It will be as a second home for him. Gannicus would also be free to travel as he wishes for any period of time. My best men to protect them as they travel between houses. Harius will have a place of refuge if ever needed. And though it remains unwanted the offer of coin whenever needed for whatever purpose will forever remain open. Gannicus shall never be used for entertainment nor allowed to be touched. He shall remain Harius' only. If he is but allowed to remain under my roof." Quintus offered and I looked to the man hoping he'd accept even one option until a better one is born at a later date.
Atticus looked between Quintus and I before sighing. "Apologies, Quintus, but even Titus knew I only agreed to the marriage if I gained Gannicus from it. Every Lanista from all over wishes for Gannicus to be under their roof. His name alone carries great wait on the tongues of the crowd. While I would never wish for Harius to be doomed to Varus as a husband I'm afraid I can only accept Gannicus or the bargain is off." I looked to Quintus and pleaded with the man silently to accept as his father did.
Quintus looked to me before sighing. "No other bargain can be struck?" he asked and Atticus shook head. Quintus nodded before speaking. "Then it pains me to see the last act and will of my father die with him. Yet I cannot part with the man as my father was willing to. I pray I have no offended this day." Quintus spoke and I was having difficulty remembering to breath.
"No offense taken. Know I shall work hard to find a way to dissolve the marriage and rescue the boy at the earliest opportunity. I will not allow him to suffer long but it will take time. Dissolving fresh marriages can be quite the difficult task without proper reasoning." Quintus nodded.
"I shall in it as well. And I assume Harius will find refuge within your Villar upon success of dissolving it. Know I shall still allow Gannicus to travel to him whenever they wish it. I will send word to his uncle that he and Varus are welcomed back to my house and previous bargain is once more alive." They spoke as if I wasn't in the room.
"Atticus." I finally found my voice as both me looked to me. "Do not do this. Even if it is for a short while. Accept one of Quintus' offers. I do not wish to be property." I begged.
Atticus sighed before walking closer to me. "Apologies, my boy, while I respected your father and Titus I have my own chosen partner at home who I wish to give my name to. I am afraid Gannicus is the only reason she and I agreed for the brief marriage between us. Yet do not doubt my words when I say I will find a means of getting you from that man. I will need time." He said gently.
I just looked between all within the room before slowly backing from them and turning to rush away from them all.
I ran into I felt I was far enough before leaning upon a wall and sliding down it as tears finally sprang free.
In a matter of moments the happiness I had been feeling was shattered and replaced with the pain and sadness I had grown accustomed to.
The veil over my eyes had vanished. I was able to see clearly now. 'I was never meant to be with him. I am forever someone doomed to be property. I can never be freed.' The thought made the tears come stronger.
Footsteps caused me to look up to see Naevia standing before me. I looked from girl as she knelt in front of me.
"All will be alright." She said softly.
I shook head. "Atticus ends bargain already struck because Quintus cannot part with Gannicus. I am to wed Varus once more." I told her.
"I know." I looked to her to see a sad smile. "I overheard it all in my attempt to find you. Moment I saw you rush from them I rushed to find you. They vowed to find a way to free you. All will right itself in time." I just laughed at her.
"Varus will never let me go. Both those men know it. They spoke those words to try and offer comfort when seeing me stripped of happiness. No, moment Varus returns I know he shall take me and I will never see this house again. Never see Gannicus again." I said and cried harder at the thought.
Naevia gently pulled me to her to offer a comforting embrace as I cried into her shoulder.
Naevia suddenly pulled from me and wiped the tears away.
"Go to him." She said and I looked to her confused. "Go to Gannicus. Take him and run from this place forever." I looked to her shocked.
"I cannot run. Varus may give eventually but my uncle will never rest until he had me once more. And Gannicus would suffer an even worse fate at his hands. I cannot let that man touch Gannicus. I could never forgive myself." I told her.
Naevia sighed and made me look to her. "If I cannot change your mind then go to him and say all you wish him to know. If you truly believe yourself unable to be saved then leave with no regrets." She said and I thought on her words before nodding and standing.
"I was a fool to ever believe I could live happily with Gannicus. He is an honorable man and deserves someone who is their own person. It is time I let him go." I told her before walking off towards Gannicus.
When I reached his chambers I hesitated before knocking.
Gannicus opened the door and looked to me confused before he noticed the tears and pulled me inside.
"Tell me who must die for causing you such pain." He growled once door was shut.
I just shook head and threw my arms around him letting the tears fall harder once more.
Gannicus stood still before he pushed me gently from him. "What has happened?" he asked in worry.
I looked up to him and sighed. "Quintus cannot part with you. Atticus will not accept in bargain Quintus offers. He only wants you. You for a marriage to me." I told him.
Gannicus was still for a moment before my words took hold and his eyes widened and he reached up to hold my face.
"Batiatus breaks bargain struck by his own father?!"
"He needs you to raise this house. He will not part with you. I am to marry Varus once more. Quintus has already sent word to my uncle requesting they return to the house." I told him."
"Then I shall break words with Batiatus. Perhaps if I spoke of my want to go with-."
"It will not work. The man has made his decision." I told him then laughed. "We were fools to believe happiness could come out of this. I was a fool. I allowed emotions to cloud mind in a dream. It now stands clear." I told him.
"This was never a dream Harius. We found each other for a reason. Our souls did. You cannot tell me you do not feel it to." He said and I shook head.
"It matters not what I feel or believe. This was never meant to happen. I should never have answered your note the first night. Then it would have saved us this pain."
"Do you believe your own words?" he asked and I looked to him.
"It is as I said. It matters not what I think or feel. Reality leaves no room for dreaming."
"No!" he growled and pulled me tightly to him in my moment of shock. "I will not let that man have you! I will take you from somewhere where we may be together. Absent worry of discovery and that cursed family of yours. I will farm if needed to provide for you. I will even become a fisherman once more. I will be rusty, but skill not fully from memory. We can start our own lives." He vowed.
I stood shocked before pulling from him. "But….the Primus…"
"Fuck the Primus!" he growled. "Fuck Batiatus. Fuck Varus. Fuck Rome." Gannicus took my face in his hands. "The only thing that matters to me now is standing before me. And I will slay all you stand between us." I stared at him shocked before looking down and slowly removing his hands.
"My uncle will never let us have peace. He would hunt us down to the ends of the earth for ruining his chances at more wealth and standing in the Senate. I cannot let that man touch you. Your fate would be worse than man." I told him.
"You believe me unable to protect you?" he asked and I laughed at the question looking up to the man once more.
"I believe you more than capable. Which is why I cannot go with you. I do not fear for my life. Only yours." I told him.
Gannicus just looked to me as I reached a hand up to run it through his hair. "I now only wish that you live and forget about me. Think of it as a dream that was difficult to wake from. But upon waking realized it could never be. Find someone who is their own person. Who is not held back by a cursed mark or family. Someone not bred to be property. You are a great man, Gannicus, and will one day make someone as happy as you made me." I told him as he pulled me into a tight embrace.
We stayed in each other's hold for along while before I pulled back to look up into his face. "I do have one last shellfish request."
"Speak words and I shall see them done." He said.
I smiled. "The moment Varus learns we are to wed once more he will not hesitate to claim what will be his." At my words Gannicus tensed and tightened his hold on me. "No matter my wish my body will no longer be mine to give willingly. I will have to please him whenever he wishes." I took in a breath then before I met the man's gaze. "Just once I wish to know what it feels like when both parties wish for it."
It took a moment for the meaning of my words to take hold. When they did Gannicus looked to me serious. "Are you certain?" he asked and I smiled.
"I have never been more certain in my life. I do not wish my first to be with a man I hate. I wish it to be with the one who has stolen my heart." Gannicus took in a breath at my words before leaning in to kiss me.
I kissed back and allowed him to push my robes from my body as I removed the little he wore before we fell onto the bed with him hovering over me.
"Are you certain? One we start I do not believe I will be able to stop." He said.
I merely leaned up to capture his lips with mine and pulled him so most of his weight was upon me.
SMUT
Gannicus slowly kissed down my body before kissing back up and paused to stare into my eyes.
I stared back as he reached up and traced my lips with his fingers.
Understanding what he wanted I opened my mouth to allow them to slip through. As I wetted his fingers Gannicus played with a nipple causing me to squirm.
When Gannicus felt the fingers were prepared enough he pulled them from me only to kiss me as he pushed one in.
In took in a deep breath upon the feeling yet Gannicus kept kissing me to distract from the pain.
Pain gave way to pleasure and before I knew it Gannicus had fit three fingers.
Gannicus removed the fingers, causing to moan unhappily, and replaced them with something much bigger.
My eyes widened and I arched trying to run from the pain lacing the bottom half of my body.
"Shh." Gannicus whispered and kissed me when he was fully in.
He remained still to allow me to grow accustom to the feeling.
Pain once more gave way to pleasure causing me to moan and move to let Gannicus know I was ready.
Gannicus moved slowly at first, but as our needs grew he picked up the pace. I came calling his name and Gannicus followed not too far behind me.
Gannicus collapsed on top of me allowing me run a hand through his hair as we tried to catch our breath.
SMUT END
When we were able to breath normally Gannicus sat up and I smiled at him.
"I love you." I told him.
Gannicus' eyes widened before he smiled gently. "I love you. More than anything in this world." He said and kissed me once more.
Three more times we merged our bodies that night.
After the last time Gannicus held me close and sleep started to claim us.
Before I allowed sleep to take me I prayed dawn would never arrive. That I could remain here. In the arms of the man I loved.
Fate had other plans as dawn did arrive. I was woken by Gannicus calling my name.
I looked to him and felt tears threathening to fall once more as he helped me to slowly stand as my lower half felt like it was on fire.
We dressed in silence and I made to leave yet Gannicus pulled me to him once more and kissed me.
"Let me take you from here." He begged once more.
I smiled and connected our heads. "I want nothing more than to follow you. Yet we would never truly be free. I cannot let my uncle touch you. Not the man who holds my heart." I said and kissed him once more.
I pulled from him and smiled sadly.
"I do not know if I will be watching the Primus. Regardless I wish you luck. I ask that you live and move on from me. Find one better suited for a man such as yourself." I told him.
Gannicus just held me tightly. "You are the one person I will never forget. For you have also stolen my heart. I wll find a way to save you. And when I do I will take you somewhere so far your uncle will never be able to find us. I promise you." He said and I just sighed.
"A promise you will never be able to keep. But I thank you for speaking it regardless." I said and his hold tightened.
After a few more moments I tried to pull from the man.
"I must go now Gannicus." I said.
"I do not wish to let you go." He whispered.
"Nor do I wish to leave. Yet the longer I am here the bigger the risk of discovery becomes." I told him.
That seemed to get Gannicus to let me go only to kiss me once more.
When he pulled from me he opened the door and made sure no one was around before allowing me to step through.
I turned to him and stolen one last kiss from the man.
"Goodbye Gannicus." I said and rushed from the man before I was no longer able to.
When I knew he could not see me I paused to lean upon a wall and slid down it as I did earlier and cried.
Cried for Gannicus. For never feeling his touch again. For the unfairness my family forced upon me. For my marriage to Varus. For everything that has happened within the last few days.
Memories of last night returned to mind causing me to smile lightly.
'At least I have my memories to get me through this life.' I thought before wiping my tears away and replaced my mask I had not worn for many days once more.
Just before I could start assending the stairs a voice stopped me.
"Such a vision should not be alone in a place like this. Too many animals around." I turned to see Solonius appeared from nowhere.
Feeling uncertain I slowly started backing to the stairs. "A nightmare woke me from my rest. When I was unable to return to it I decided a walk would aid in clearing mind of the memory." I told the man who nodded and took a step to me causing me to step backwards.
"A nightmare you say? Are you sure it was not a dream? One filled with the touches of a gladiator?" I felt my heart race at his question yet glared at the man.
"I am a noblemen. I would never be caught in the arms of a slave!" I growled hating the lie I spoke.
Solonius smirked. "I, too, found rest hard to find this night. Words spoken between Quintus and I keeping my mind active." He said and stepped closer causing me to yet again step backwards. "So I decided to go for a walk. Imagine my surprise when my feet led me to this area only to see a beauty leaving Gannicus' chambers. And his mark proof of actions within." I felt myself pale as I looked to my mark upon my arm.
It appeared barely visible and gone in many places.
In our need for each other and emotional state we forgot to mind my mark.
It was truly the first time I forgot about the dreaded thing. And it just sealed Gannicus' fate.
I tensed and looked for anything I could use to stop the man before me only to look to him confused when he started laughing.
"You misunderstood me. I do not plan on revealing your secret. Not anymore anyway." I relaxed slightly yet still stayed on guard.
"Why would you not reveal us?" I asked and Solonius smirked stepping even closer causing me to back up once again.
"You see, Quintus has betrayed me in a way I never thought possible. All because he wishes to rise in power and would not heed my warnings. I was trying to find ways to end the man that would make him suffer as much as I was able to make him. I was at a loss….until I saw you and Gannicus just now." I tensed once more.
"Do not misunderstand. It is as I said I will not reveal you. I will simply use you."
"How?" I asked. Before I could do anything Solonius was suddenly close to me and causing me to back once more only to realize I had somehow turned and now had a wall upon my back.
"Gannicus is needed for Batiatus to rise. Or so he believes. If I were to remove Gannicus do you think Batiatus would succeed still? He asked reaching up to run a hand along my face. I flinched from the touch as the man continued. "Gannicus seemed as upset with your departure as you now stand. Perhaps he will find joy in having you return to his doorstep. I sent a man to 'gage' reaction when he opens the door." He said smirking.
I blinked at his words before they set in and fear like no other entered me.
"Gannicus." I said and made to leave yet Solonius' hand upon stomach stopped me.
I looked to the man confused as he smirk grew.
I looked down slowly to see he was holding something to my stomach. Pain suddenly hit me and I realized too late I had been stabbed.
'Where had it been hidden?' I could not help but think as the man twisted the knife before roughly pulling it out allowing me slide down the wall sideways as I tempted to stop the bleeding.
"Killing Gannicus now would have no effect on Quintus." Solonius spoke as he knelt beside me. "No, I need the man to die upon the sands with Quintus able to watch. How do you think Gannicus shall fair in the Primus after learning of your death?" he said and I glared
"G-Gannicus is stronger than you believe." I gasped out.
"True. Yet any man, when parted from his heart, falls easily." He said and gently removed my hand to allow the blood to flow freely once more.
"You will not get away with this." I said between breaths.
Solonius merely petting my hair.
"Oh, dear boy, you will be long gone. No one will expose me." He said and I spit blood into the man's face with a glare.
The man wiped it away with a sigh. "I did not wish this, dear Harius, yet I must teach Quintus a lesson. You must be gone for that to happen." He said as darkness started to take hold.
A figure suddenly appeared walking up to us yet my vision was too blurry for me to see who it was.
Solonius stood to face the figure. "Do it." Was all he said as the figure moved to me.
I looked to it before leaning my head on the wall facing the way to Gannicus.
'I am sorry my love.' I thought as darkness finally took hold.
PLEASE READ: And there's chapter five! This chapter kicked my butt badly! Because of this chapter I'm gonna take two days or so for a break before updating anything. Two days working on this thing has fried my brain. I do hope you all liked this one and that I flowed like the ones before it. After a small break I will update once more!
