A Fresh Start
Chapter Thirty Five
After they eat, Megan drives Sam to the airport. Dropping her at the gate, she says. "You're going to be okay."
"I know."
"You'll call me."
"Yes." Sam replies, hugging her before she walks into the airport and Megan leaves. An hour later, Sam's plane takes off.
Jeffrey is leaving city hall when he notices a man leaning against the wall next to the steps that leads up to the building. He can't really see the man's face, but something about him gives Jeffrey a very uneasy feeling. Jeffrey watches him as he walks down the stairs. When he reaches his truck, he looks back over his shoulder but the man is gone. Dismissing it, as just someone hanging out, probably waiting for someone inside the building he gets in the truck. Starting it up, he pulls out of his parking place and heads towards Company for something to eat. Walking in, he nods to Marina, as he walks through the restaurant to one of the booths.
Picking up one of the menus, he starts to look it over when Doris sits down on the other side and clears her voice. Putting the menu down, he's surprised to see her sitting there. "Doris, I shouldn't be talking to you."
"I'm the DA, you're the mayor."
"I'm also heading an investigation into impropriety by you."
"We both know you don't have anything."
"Actually, we have quite a lot Doris." Jeffrey says, watching her closely and not at all surprised that she shows no emotion at that information.
"I heard you interrogated Ashley."
"Actually she came to me on her own. I imagine it was quite hard for her to do since you're her mother." Jeffrey says, as Marina walks over.
"Would you like to order?" She asks, looking between Jeffrey and Doris.
"Actually we were…."
"Finished." Jeffrey says, looking at Doris until she gets up and leaves. He turns to Marina. "I'll have the 12oz steak, medium rare, Buzz's special fries and a coke?"
"You really need to have some vegetables with that." Sam says, from behind him. Turning around, he stares at her for a few seconds before she says, "Are you going to just sit there?"
Getting up, he hugs her tightly before leaning back to give her a quick kiss. "What are you doing here?" He asks, as Marina starts to walk away. "Marina, wait. Do you want something to eat?"
"No, I ate before I left DC."
"Okay." Jeffrey says dismissing Marina as Sam sits down in the booth beside him.
"What are you doing here?" He asks again, sitting down beside her.
"I've got something I need to talk to you about."
"So you flew all the way back from DC. Why didn't you just call me?"
"This is something I needed to talk to you in person about."
"You're starting to scare me. Are you okay?" He asks, putting his arm around her, watching her.
"I'm fine right now, but I couldn't tell you this over the phone." Sam replies, trying to reassure him.
"Okay." Jeffrey replies, looking around for Marina. When he spots her, he raises his hand to get her attention.
"Yes, Jeffrey." She says when she reaches their table.
"Have they started on that order yet?"
"Yes."
"I'll take it to go then." Jeffrey says, sensing the Sam really needs to talk to him and that she doesn't want to do it there.
"Okay, I'll make it to go."
"Thank you." Jeffrey says turning to Sam as Marina walks away. "Are you sure you're okay? Do we need to go over to Cedars?"
"No, I'm not sick. I just need to talk to you." She says, taking his hand and holding it.
"Can you at least tell me what this is about? You're still moving here."
"Yes that hasn't changed, at least not yet." Sam replies.
"Why would that change? Unless you don't want…."
"No, no, I will always want to be with you that will never change. I'm just not sure how you will feel after I tell you what I need to tell you."
"Sam, you could never tell me anything that would make me not want to be with you. You have to know that." Jeffrey says reaching over to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear as Marina brings his food.
"That'll be $12.32." Marina says.
Jeffrey hands her a twenty. "Keep the change." He says, getting up and taking the bag as he helps Sam from the booth.
"Thanks." Marina says
"You're welcome." Jeffrey says, walking away with his arm across Sam's shoulders.
When they reach the parking lot, he helps her into the truck, hands her the food and then gets in behind her. They drive over to the loft in silence, with a thousand things running through Jeffrey's mind. When they reach the apartment, Jeffrey opens the door for her. Walking in, she walks into the living room as he takes the food into the kitchen. Putting it on the counter, he walks back into the living room.
Sam is sitting on the couch, staring out the window at the view when he sits down beside her. He watches her for a few seconds before he says. "Sam." As he reaches for her hand.
Taking her attention away from the view, she turns to look at him. She has the overwhelming urge to feel him arms around her. "Can you hold me?" She asks softly.
"Sam, what's wrong?" he asks, completely convinced that something is terribly wrong now.
"I just need to feel your arms around me." Sam says, moving closer to him as the thought runs across her mind. "Since this might be the last time I do."
"Okay." He says, as she moves onto his lap. Laying her head on his shoulder, he wraps his arms around her. After a several minutes, he says. "You know that you can tell me anything? Whatever this is, we'll work it…."
"I'm pregnant."
There is a long silence before Jeffrey asks. "What did you say?"
Sitting up, Sam looks him in the eye and says. "I said I'm pregnant."
"As in…."
"As in I'm going to be a mother, you're going to be a father again. As in, in about nine months we're going to have a little baby girl or boy." Again there is a long silence but this time its Sam who speaks first. "Don't you have anything to say?" She asks, moving off his lap and to the other end of the couch. Pulling her knees to her she wraps her arms around her legs while she watches him.
"I don't know what to say?" He says, seeing the defensive position she's put herself in.
"You don't know what to say, I just told you that I was pregnant."
"I know. I thought you were on the…."
"I forgot to take them. After the break in, they were the last thing on my mind."
"You're sure that you're…."
"Yes, after my flight landed this morning, I went straight to the hospital and I had LaKeisha draw some blood and run a pregnancy test on it. It came back positive."
"This is why you were asking about having a baby last night? Why didn't you tell me then?"
"I didn't know for sure, although I was fairly certain after I found my pack of pills in my purse and realized that I hadn't taken any since last Tuesday."
"The morning of the break in."
"Yes."
Jeffrey still doesn't say anything. After several minutes, Sam stands up and starts to walk away. "Wait. Where are you going?"
"When you figure out what you want to do? Let me know." She says, walking towards the door.
"Sam, whoa, wait. I don't want you to go?"
"Then you need to say something, because your silence is telling me that you're not thrilled about this."
"You took me completely by surprise. We weren't planning on having a baby."
"That's the way life is, it throws us curve balls."
"I know, but a baby. Do you want this?" Jeffrey asks
"I told you last night, if it was your child, I'd be willing to have a child. Are you telling me that you're not?"
"No, I don't know. I never thought about it. After you left, that part of my life seemed to be over. I didn't let myself think about it because I couldn't see myself having kids with anyone but you."
Jeffrey stops for a second, realizing that his last statement was the truth. He hadn't wanted to have kids with anyone but her, even with Cassie. Walking over to her, he puts both hands on her face, leaning over he kisses her. Several seconds pass before Jeffrey steps back, leaning his forehead against hers; he tries to catch his breath.
"J" She says softly, leaning up, she kisses him again.
"Beca." He whispers, sweeping her up in his arms he starts towards the couch and then changes his mind and heads for the stairs as she breaks the kiss. Laying her head on his shoulder, she hugs him tightly as they walk into their bedroom.
Laying her across the bed, he leans over her. "I love you so much." He whispers, looking down at her, softly brushing her hair back from her face.
"I love you too." She whispers, his eyes slowly moving over her face while she watches him.
Stopping for a few seconds, he stares at her mouth. A perfect cupid's bow, soft and sweet. He sighs softly as he moves up to her nose, reminding him of a button, small and cute. And then up to her eyes, the window's to her soul. They show every emotion that she feels, happiness, fear, anger, indifference. If he wants to know what kind of mood she is in, he only has to look into her eyes.
Slowly he leans forwards, softly kissing her on each eye, moving down to her nose and then on to her mouth, kissing her as she sighs softly, his tongue slipping inside to caress hers as she reaches up, burying her fingers in his hair. Laying down beside her, he rolls to his side and brings her with him. After a few more seconds, he leans back and whispers. "I need you Beca."
"I know." She whispers, as he begins to tug on her t-shirt and she leans towards him, kissing the side of his neck and nibbling on his ear
He shivers slightly as the heat fills him from her kisses. Laying his hand against the small of her back, he reaches for her mouth, kissing her while her leg slips between his and he pulls her to him, moaning softly. Moving to gently nibble on her ear, the feel of his breath against her neck makes her need him more.
"J, I need you." She whispers, laying her forehead against his chest.
"I know, but I want to go slow." He replies, kissing her again. Holding her against him so she can feel how much he needs her.
Slowly she begins to move against him. She can't move much because he's holding her so tightly, but it's enough to almost make him forget that he wants this to last. Breaking the kiss, he moves away from her while she tries to hang on.
"Beca, give me a minute." He gasps, trying to get control of the desire rushing through him.
She lays there watching him for a few seconds before she moves to get up and he reaches to stop her. "Shhh." She whispers, laying a finger against his lips.
Opening his mouth, he sucks it inside, licking it as he stares at her until he sees the shiver of desire roll across her body and then he releases it. Answering the challenge, she reaches for the hem of her shirt, crossing her arms she pulls it up over her head, watching him until the shirt blocks her view and then she toss it to the floor. She pauses for a few seconds until he starts to say something and then she reaches around and unsnaps her bra, freeing her breasts as her bra drops to the floor.
Sitting up, he holds out his hand for her, taking a step closer to him. She feels her knees buckle when he softly caresses her nipple. The warmth of his breath feels hot against her skin as she buries her fingers in his hair, holding him against her. Reaching up, he begins to gently caress her other nipple as she lets her head fall back, moaning softly. He listens as her ragged breath becomes more ragged. Wrapping his arms around her waist, he starts to move back.
That movement breaks her out of her fog. Pulling away from him is so hard for her to do. He stares at her for a few minutes before he leans back slowly running his eyes down her body. Her nipples are firm and taunt as he moves on, watching her struggling to catch her breath as he lays his head to one side and looks up at her through faded green eyes.
Holding her hand out to him, she stares at him and until he stands up in front of her. Reaching for his tie, she starts to loosen it. Pulling it from around his collar, she reaches for the top button, unbuttoning it slowly as she looks up at him. She slowly moves down the shirt unbuttoning each button as she tugs on it, pulling it free from his pants. Reaching for his wrist, she unbuttons the buttons at each of his wrists before she lays her hands on his waist being careful not to touch his skin.
Looking down, he whispers. "Do you have any idea how much I want you?"
Glancing down, she whispers. "Yes. " But she makes no move to move, no move to take his shirt off, or undo his pants. "You said, you wanted to go slow and that's what we're doing." She says, as she looks up through hooded lashes.
"Sam, we have to speed this along. I'm starting to hurt." He whispers, shifting his hips.
Moving her hand from his waist, she cups him softly as she watches his knees buckle. Reaching for her, he wraps one arm around her waist, pulling her to him as he lays one hand against her cheek, trapping her hand between them as he kisses her. After a couple seconds, he reaches for the button on the skort she is wearing. Popping it open, he starts to tug until it falls to the floor when he steps back. Looking down, he feels his breath catch at the sight of her in red satin hi-cut panties. Her skin tone a golden brown even with the limited amount of sun she has gotten that summer.
Wrapping an arm around her waist, he pulls her back against him. Pressing his body against hers until he feels her begin to tremble. Leaning back, he watches her eyes glaze over, as she reaches up and brushes his shirt off his shoulders. Letting her go, he lets the shirt fall to the floor as she leans in and begins to lightly kiss his chest, nibbling and kissing him as he reaches up and puts his hand on the back of her head.
Reaching for the clasp on his pants, she slips it open and then reaches for the zipper. Gently tugging it down, begin careful not to hurt him. He sighs softly as some of the pressure eases up, until she begins to tug on his pants and they the fall to his feet as she drops to her knees. Gently kissing his stomach, as he moves closer to her and she moves down. Kissing him through his boxers, she feels him jump, looking up at him to see if he's okay as he nods. "Keep going." He whispers
Reaching for his boxers, she tugs them down until they fall to his feet. Leaning back, she slowly runs her eyes over him until he moves closer to her, silently begging for her to continue what she started. Watching her, as her tongue slips from her mouth, lightly licking. That first caress felt better than anything he felt before. He would have sworn to it on a stack of bibles, if he had to. Taking him inside, she sucks him deeper letting her tongue caress as much of him as she can. Pulling back, she slowly runs the tip of her tongue around the tip of him. That caress breaks his control; pulling away he pulls her up.
Reaching for her panties, he pulls them down; letting his fingers slip between her legs, feeling the wetness clinging to her skin, takes him closer to the edge. Taking a step back his knees brush the back of the bed, he lays down. Leaving Sam two options move away or follow, she follows. He doesn't stay on his back for long. Wrapping his arms around her, he holds her against him as he rolls her over onto her back. Kissing her as she moves her legs, bracing them against the mattress. She opens for him as he slowly slips inside her.
"J, oh baby."
"Beca, umm." He groans, slowly thrusting.
Thrusting deep inside, he feels his body spinning out of control, forcing him to slow down after a couple of minutes. "J, love me baby, please!" She begs, rolling her hips against his.
"Oh, god Beca! You feel so good."
"Am I hot?"
"Yes."
"Am I tight?"
"Hold me baby." He whispers as Sam reaches for him, holding him against her.
Bracing his hand on either side of her shoulders, he leans back and begins to thrusts. Pushing them each higher, and higher. He feels her beginning to close around him, holding him a little tighter.
"Beca!" He groans, when he feels her body caressing him with each thrust while she rolls her hips.
"J" She cries, as she feels her release shatter.
Wave upon wave of desire washes over her and flooding their bodies with released desire. "Sam." He groans, collapsing into her arms. "Baby, I love you." He whispers. His breath feels cool against her heated skin as she turns her head and kisses the side of his neck. "I love you too." She whispers, holding him tightly.
Leaning back he sees the tears sparkling in her eyes. "What's wrong, are you okay? Did I hurt you or the baby?"
"I'm fine. The baby doesn't even know what just happened." Sam says, smiling at him.
"Then why do you look like you're going to cry."
"I'm happy and relieved." Sam says, reaching up to wipe a tear from her cheek.
"Relieved…." Jeffrey watches her for a couple seconds and then he realizes that she really didn't know how he was going to react to her being pregnant. "You thought I was going to be mad, maybe even make you leave." Jeffrey says, with surprise as he moves to sit up on the side of the bed.
"I wasn't sure how you would react. I told you that. That's why I didn't tell you over the phone, and then you were so quiet after I did tell you."
"You took me by surprise, but I still love you, why would you think I wouldn't be happy? Unless you thought I would think you did this on purpose." Sam looks away for a couple seconds, long enough for Jeffrey to realize that she had thought about that. "You did think that. You thought that I would deny this child."
"We just got back together after being apart for a very long time. People change, I know you wanted kids when we were together before, but…."
"But people don't change that drastically, you can't simply stop wanting something because your plans didn't work out. You know that I was a pretty lonely kid, growing up. I wanted a big family, that doesn't change just because you loose someone you love."
"You said downstairs that you didn't want to have kids if it wasn't with me."
"Yeah, I also said that I hadn't thought about it."
"I'm sorry, I should have trusted in you. But can't you understand why I didn't. I know you love me, but we weren't planning on this, and sometimes when things happen that couples aren't planning on… well, things happen."
"You mean someone leaves, someone walks away. Someone accuses the other one of cheating, or someone denies the child is theirs, usually the man." Jeffrey says, standing up and reaching for his boxers.
"What are you doing?" Sam asks, watching him walk across the room.
Jeffrey doesn't reply as he walks into the closet, walking out he slips on a pair of jeans.
"Jeffrey." Sam says, getting out of the bed. "Talk to me."
"I've got to get out of here." Jeffrey says, pulling a t-shirt out of his dresser and pulling it over his head.
"Jeffrey." She says, reaching out to stop him.
"No, I got to go." He says, brushing her off as he pulls his shoes on before he heads towards the door.
"Jeffrey, you can't walk away. We have to…." He doesn't reply as he walks out of the room, with Sam following behind him. "Jeffrey."
Grabbing his keys off the counter by the door, he walks out without saying good-bye or replying to her. Sitting down on the stairs, she stares at the door. "He'll come back." She whispers, with tears in her eyes.
Several hours later, Sam is sitting on the couch in the dark when she hears someone outside the door. "No, I don't…." Jeffrey says, slurring his words slightly as Sam opens the door to find a very drunk Jeffrey and Ava standing on the landing.
"What happened?" she asks.
"He was at Jon's Bar, getting very drunk. So drunk in fact that he tried to pick a fight with a guy. And I had to talk the guy down." Ava says, as Jeffrey stumbles into the loft and over to the couch, crashing as Ava and Sam try to keep him from hurting himself.
"Thank you for bring him home." Sam says, after they have his feet on the couch and she walks Ava to the door.
"He kept mumbling something about you on the way over here." Ava says, glancing back at Jeffrey.
"Yeah, we sort of had a fight. It'll be alright, we'll talk about it in the morning." Sam says.
"Okay." Ava says, walking out the door.
"Thanks again from bring him home and stopping the fight."
"You're welcome, but I don't think it would be a good thing for the mayor of Springfield to be arrested for assault on one of his own citizens." Ava replies, glancing at him again.
"Thank you again."
"You're welcome, I'll see you later. Wait, I thought you went back to DC."
"I did, I had to talk to him so I flew back. We'll tell you about it later." Sam says, looking over at an unconscious Jeffrey lying on the couch."
"Could you have him call me in the morning?"
"Yes."
"Thanks."
Ava turns to leave as Sam closes the door. Walking over to the couch, she sits down after gently picking Jeffrey's head up and laying it on her lap. He snuggles in closer to her as she runs her fingers through his hair while she watches him sleep. Somewhere around four am, she finally falls asleep.
