Author's Note: Don't you just love promos? They are the essence of character development and what defines a pro wrestler by their eloquence on the mic. Okay, maybe not just eloquence, but slight bragging rights is fine. This chapter is literally inspired by some of CM Punk's pipebombs and The Miz's excellent promo work (you have to see their promos to get the feel of it, they're must-see masterpieces). I know Becky's a good trash talker, so she's gonna nails this. Alright, let's bring on Chapter 5! Enjoy!
CH 5: Straight Fire
News of the BPWO conference incident mentioned in numerous pro wrestling sources spread like wildfire and videos of it (from different fans' perspectives) became viral. Becky and Finn's newfound rivalry pushed the idea of the main event to even greater heights, anticipating fans of what performance they would put on together. But what happened at the Convention Centre Dublin added more questions: was it real or was it a worked shoot? One article from the Wrestling Inc. website describes the incident in detail:
Becky Lynch-Finn Bálor Brawl: Real or Worked Shoot?
"Fights between wrestlers at press conferences are nothing new in the world of pro wrestling, especially if you're New Japan. But when catastrophe strikes out in the form of Maiden Ireland and the Demon King, it serves for one deadly combination.
Last week at the Convention Centre Dublin this June, an unlikely place for a pro wrestling conference, WWE superstars Becky Lynch and Finn Bálor were seen together on stage with other competitors casually answering questions for fans. Things were looking okay….until the unusual happened.
Finn answered a question that ticked off Becky's nerves and Becky goes off on him in surprising explicit fashion: criticizing his role as leader of the Bullet Club, his disrespect towards New Japan officials, and for not appreciating her efforts enough.
This vicious exchange only gotten worse when Finn told her she wasn't an official part of the Bullet Club and she was responsible for her own downfall, causing Becky to lash out by throwing a water bottle at his face.
She then attacked Finn and the two traded hard blows before being pulled away from their fellow wrestlers. The incident enraged Fit Finlay - its host - so much that he revealed the BPWO's special guest referee for the main event to be one of Finn's protégés, Jordan Devlin.
Videos of the conference incident has gone viral on YouTube, quickly reaching 2 million views in a few days time. But despite the trouble, many fans and critics were wondering if the entire fiasco was either real or a worked shoot in the making.
Some fans say it felt real to them because Finn didn't expect Becky to get upset and the other wrestlers looked clearly uncomfortable. Some fans claim it might be a worked shoot due to Becky addressing Finn by their real-life selves and her previous struggles early in her career. Whatever the case, it displays a riveting piece of ingenuity between a male and female wrestler we haven't seen in decades. Only they know what the fans want.

Dublin, Ireland. The 3Arena. WWE Live house show. Day 5 of the WWE UK Tour.
The entire arena was a bit dark at the moment, but fans cheered as the only spotlight shone on their favorite underdog: Becky Lynch. Becky stood in the middle of the ring, confident and poised. She looks around her surroundings, hearing the crowd loudly chant in unison: "Becky! Becky! Becky! Becky!"
The massive chants and electrifying atmosphere sent goosebumps down Becky's spine. She never thought she would receive such large reception from the fans because it felt like the equivalent of Daniel Bryan's "Yes!" chants. She knew she was fighting for the match of her career, so Becky soaked it all in.
Mic in hand, Becky takes a deep breath and spoke from the heart. "5 years ago….everything changed for me. I made my first house show debut at NXT after coming out of a 7-year retirement from in-ring competition."
The crowd clapped.
"One year after my house show debut, I made my first in-ring televised debut at NXT in front of hundreds of people. And in that moment, that feeling inside of me... a feeling I never thought I had since I left wrestling in the past, came back. And I've prove to people that I'm just capable as any women on the roster today."
The crowd clapped again.
"In 2015, alongside Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair, I became one of 3 Horsewomen to be sent to the main roster for Monday Night Raw. And when I came out for the first time in front of millions of fans, both attending and those watching at home, I knew that I was going to have one hell of a journey ahead of me."
The crowd once again clapped with enthusiasm, even some were whistling with appreciation.
"But that doesn't mean I was highly respected by my female comrades. Some say I was the 'least relevant', some say that I didn't deserved to be champion, and some say I didn't belong on the same level as they do. So what if I'm not like them? I'm my own warrior on the battlefield and there's nothing they could change about me. But that's enough of my problems with the women's division. You know why I came here for one reason."
Fans in the arena got excited and a majority of them stood up and cheered. I'm seriously enjoying this, Becky thought.
She continued. "Now….all of you have seen that viral video on YouTube, right? The one where I was talking trash to Finn and started beating him up afterward? And some of you were wondering: was our argument real or was it just an act? I wanted to say nothing about it and leave you guys to decide for yourself, but to tell you the truth….it felt like both.
Sure, I told Finn about his days leading the Bullet Club, but something inside me just lashed out. What he did was the OPPOSITE of who he was as my mentor and his treatment towards New Japan - including its staff and wrestlers - is absolutely unforgivable. He taught me years ago that I should follow my heart and battle against anyone who tries to defy me. Well, that 'twisted' meaning came on full display when he betrayed the people who took him in. How he bullies people to bow down to him and his wicked schemes in winning championships back then disgusts me and I want to teach him a lesson."
The fans in the arena clapped and cheered for Becky.
"He said that he can do whatever the hell he wants. You can't do whatever you want by force, Finn. You can't always get nice things in return. Because even were you a heel back then, you were still under New Japan's contract and under their supervision. In other words….you've been their biggest bitch since day one."
The crowd gasped, then the thousands delivered a standing ovation. Every fan couldn't get enough of Becky's impassioned promo.
Becky shouted, "You think I wasn't a part of your Bullet Club? Reality check: I know you better than anyone of those jackasses in your so-called clique! Try to justify yourself by sending these men for my throat and I'll hit them with everything I've got, even if I bled to death! Bad Luck Fale: I'll bust him open. Chase Owens: I'll bust him open. Cody Rhodes: kick his ass tenfold. Hangman Page: irrelevant, but I'll still bust him open. Marty Scurll: definitely kick his ass thousandfold. The Young Bucks: I bust their nuts with low blows. Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa: both bust them open in seconds flat. Hikuleo: I'll bust him open. Yujiro Takahashi and Taiji Ishimori: absolute jokes, I'll bust them open. Kenny Omega...someday he'll die. And last but not least, Stephen Amell….he can go f himself!"
Everyone in 3Arena erupted in this euphoric wave of clapping, cheering, and chanting. Becky became silent for a bit in the ring, her face slightly pink from shouting on the mic. Fans were still on their feet throughout the standing ovation and it felt like it lasted for 3 minutes. Becky realized that her eyes were a bit misty-eyed from the speech she was making to the WWE Universe. Every word and every emotion delivered with confidence and her whole body was tingling between nervousness and excitement.
"What makes you think you're better than me, Finn? Is it that Demon King you've always prided yourself about? Just to let you know, I'm not afraid of you. I didn't come here to play mind games, I came here to slay a demon! I know your demons, I know your darkest secrets, and I know what you're capable of when it's unleashed. You always get the attention that you deserved. But I. DESERVE. MY. MOMENT!"
The fans started to chant loudly in droves: "You deserve it (clap clap, clap clap clap)! You deserve it (clap clap, clap clap clap)! You deserve it (clap clap, clap clap clap)!"
Becky took a breather and said, "So Finn, for the time being, don't mock me with your war paint and sniveling growls. Because you don't know when you're gonna get a missile dropkick straight for your face. I live by my philosophy, the straight fire that resides in me. 'Straight fire' is the will to persevere, the heart to push on, and the power to stand against the odds. I won't be defeated easily and you have my word. If you don't think that's the case, why don't you make your presence known….right now?"
Becky drops her mic and faces the entrance. The fans were hyped, waiting in anticipation of what is going to happen next. Becky spreads her arms as if she's asking for a challenge to commence. She wasn't going to waste anytime soon with her opponent.
After a few minutes' pause, the first sound of a heartbeat echoes throughout the arena and the lights suddenly turned off. The crowd erupts into cheers, for it was a familiar noise. The lights above Becky turned red and the heartbeat continues. She can feel the energy around her change and the dark atmosphere slowly creeps in on her. But Becky stands unfazed as mist starts to surround the ring.
The heartbeat then begins to build pace, quicker and quicker and quicker. It was if the entire arena was in a trance and there was no end to this constant beating. It continued to ring in Becky's ears until….the heartbeat stops and the arena remains black. The air became deathly silent.
Then, growing in crescendo, the lights slowly turned back on and Becky finds herself staring into the eyes of her mentor, her best friend, her so-called "brother". The one and only Finn Bálor.
The fans erupted into a massive pop throughout the 3Arena and some of them couldn't even catch their breath. The sight of the two Irish Superstars, staring intensely to each other, was the icing on the cake. No dialogue. No further insults. Just them in the same ring together.
Finn stood above Becky and stared at her with his cold, grey-blue eyes. Becky looked above Finn and did the same with her brown eyes. But what Becky saw in Finn's eyes was different from what she suspected: pain. Why is there pain in his eyes? What is going on in his mind? Is it regret? Is it being nervous? Is it a loneliness she never knew? Becky doesn't understand…
Fans around them were chanting in various degrees one can imagine:
"Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!"
"Holy Shit! Holy Shit! Holy Shit!"
"Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!"
"This is Awesome (clap clap, clap clap clap)! This is Awesome (clap clap, clap clap clap)! This is Awesome (clap clap, clap clap clap)!"
As the entire arena was going nuts, Finn and Becky continued to stare for a few minutes. Then, Finn slowly backs up, but still keeping his eyes on her. The fans quickly booed him for this gesture. The moment was just getting heated.
"Who are ya! Who are ya! Who are ya! Who are ya!", the fans started to chant while pointing at Finn.
Finally, Finn turned back and left the ring in style. Becky watched as Finn heads for the entrance. But before he could do that, Finn stops and looks behind to see Becky one last time. His frown turned into worry and Becky sensed it from afar. Was it really….that?
Finn turns around and disappears behind the titantron. There were simply no words for Becky to describe this moment.
Holy shit indeed. What makes these Superstars so good at what they do? How much do they know about each other? And why is their friendship put to the test? Are friendships meant to be broken? Look out for this special chapter, Chapter 5.5: Promo, that is coming your way!
