Author's Note: Good luck to Jordan Devlin on his qualification to WWE's UK Championship Tournament (Part II). May he be a proud son to his parents, Finn and Becky, for a job well done. Wait...did I just said that? What? Well screw it, I'm calling it: Finn's the dad, Becky's the mom, and Jordan's the baby boy for once. My OTP family complete (sorry it's summertime, forgive my weird shipping rituals). And if you thought Becky was a natural redhead, think again 'cause she's BORN A BRUNETTE ALL ALONG, SPOILER ALERT!
Just forget what I just said above and enjoy the chapter.
CH 6: Legacy
The month of July came around without warning, the afternoon sun basking in the sky - not too hot - and Dublin's streets were crowded with locals, entertainers, and tourists with their backpacks and sunglasses. The stretch of the Liffey Bridge looms over the River Liffey like a gateway between parallel worlds, one of cultural and prosperous significance. But this isn't really about sightseeing.
At the National Stadium, Becky sits in the front row alongside a group of fans. This Over the Top Wrestling event, Rocky Road to Dublin, was brimming with anticipation. News of Jordan Devlin defending his Jr. Heavyweight Championship against WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne in the main event had the entire town talking. Even the thought of Jordan losing it to Pete would be the devastation of his career and a dominant triumph for the Bruiserweight. Both are excellent executioners of their craft, so the uncertainty surrounding this match feels like a nerve-wreck.
But for Becky, seeing previous matches in Rocky Road to Dublin only fueled the flames of what is yet to come in the month ahead. Jordan and Pete's main event, which she has yet to watch, is just an underlying precursor uncompared to the destruction and mayhem that awaits her at the Belfast Pro Wrestling Open. Thoughts of the Demon King flooded her mind as OTT prepares for its final match.
Why am I so obsessed with the Demon King?, Becky thought. I should worry about myself, not him.
Jordan's entrance theme pops up and the fans stood and cheered. Slowly but surely, Jordan walks down the ramp with his belt around his waist and enters the ring. Becky smiles as Jordan stands on top of the turnbuckle and waves in her direction. He takes out the Jr. Heavyweight Championship and rose it above his head as the fans let out an uproarious pop. Then, Jordan goes back down to the mat and stands in his corner.
Pete's entrance theme comes up and a loud boo was projected from the crowd. Pete comes out of the curtain and walks down the ramp, his teeth holding the WWE UK Championship as if it were a piece of meat. He enters the ring, quickly walking towards Jordan to intimidate him. The referee tries to block Pete from attacking his opponent, but Pete didn't further the situation. He went to his own corner as instructed.
As Pete's entrance music stopped, the two combatants faced each other in the middle, each of them holding their respective belts. Ring announcer Butch stood between the men and began to shout on the mic:
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is a main event match scheduled for one fall….and it is for the Junior Heavyweight Championship!"
Becky and the fans clapped. Some were already chanting, "Jordan Devlin! (clap clap, clap clap clap!), Jordan Devlin! (clap clap, clap clap clap!), Jordan Devlin! (clap clap, clap clap clap!)"
"Introducing first to my right….from Birmingham, England, weighing 205 pounds...he is the WWE United Kingdom Champion: the Bruiserweight, Pete Dunne!"
Pete delivered his signature taunt: raising his hand to the audience and forming it into a fist to the side of his jaw. Fans continued to boo (except a number of them did cheer for the rugged heel).
"And to my left….from Bray, County Wicklow, weighing 180 pounds...he is the Junior Heavyweight Champion: the Import Killer, Jordan Devlin!"
Jordan stood in the middle of the ring, raising his belt up in the air in an act of defiance against the Bruiserweight. Pete didn't seem fazed. "Let's go, you two! Especially you, Jordan!", Becky shouted.
The two retreat to their respected corners until the referee orders for the bell to ring. Ding ding ding!, goes the bell as it echoes around the room.
Becky watched as Jordan and Pete circled each other, trying to outdo and outsmart one another through grappling and calculated strikes. But as the combatants continued to do so and their movesets becoming a lot more fluid, instead of just watching every spot attempted, she realized she could learn more from this match through critical observation and analysis. A so-called background check on Jordan and Pete on their fighting style, ring psychology, and their capabilities and inabilities in the squared circle. Getting lost in the heat of the fight from her perspective, Becky begins to review the main event thoughtfully:
"Okay, let me see….I'll start with Jordan. He shares the same height as Pete, but due to his previous training, he's pretty nimble and agile for his size. His technicality is crisp and his aerial moves can certify him as cruiserweight material, so he definitely handles opponents at his own pace. Moonsaults, powerful piledrivers, reigning DDTs: that's his specialty. Ring psychology? Well, he isn't so much of a showman...but his idea of interacting with his audience and his opponents are a plus. I do think Jordan has that never-say-die personality, like he's determined to face adversity when the odds are stacked against him.
Since his style is a combination of catch wrestling, strong style, and high-flying, Jordan has to be careful not to execute a random collection of spots when he's in the ring. It might weaken the purpose of what he's truly unfolding in the match and people may not immerse into his character as planned. He has to sell Pete's hits with more conviction and if he can realize this, he'll be on top.
Pete Dunne: brash, cocky, ruthless aggression. That's why he's called the Bruiserweight. Although he's considered a brawler on some occasions, he's also a great technician. If any part of his opponent's body is strained or injured, Pete can spot that opportunity to torture that specific area with sheer "body manipulation". Bending fingers, stretching the leg, twisting the arm...Pete delivers the pain perfectly. Luckily, Jordan is quick on his feet to calculate Pete's time to pause and when to strike. His ring psychology is simple: he wants to kick someone's ass. Not just to win a championship belt or any award of his earned time, but to enjoy hurting someone for the fun of it.
Pete's use of technicality and reckless brawling as a heel is in full display right now, so he's on a deadly rampage as of this main event. However, he tends to slow down on spots that are expected to build to the end of the match. Giving too much recovery time for his opponent to plan their next attack would eventually crack Pete's confidence into pieces. Pete needs to step up his A-game if he's going to face opponents with faster reflexes than him.
So from getting all of this….."
Jordan delivers a superkick to stun Pete for a moment, making his opponent's upper body lean down. In timed fashion, Jordan wraps him around his chest and lifts the Bruiserweight's lower body in the air as if he were folded in half. He slams Pete with his signature move, the package piledriver, onto the mat and pins him for the count.
"Maybe…I can apply new high-flying techniques and MMA tactics to bring down Fergal's Demon King persona. It's a brilliant concept. All I need is to find someplace that can expand my sense of vision for the BPWO's main event. But where?"
"One...two...three!", the fans counted in unison as Jordan defeats Pete in the process. They cheered as their marvelous hero, the emblematic Import Killer, stood up proudly and gives a guttural roar to the audience. Becky claps along with the fans. Butch announces on the mic, "Here is your winner and STILL your Jr. Heavyweight Champion, Jordan Devlin!"
Once again, the fans clapped and cheered for their favorite wrestler. Jordan goes to the top turnbuckle and raised his championship belt in the air. A pop ensues throughout the National Stadium. Then, Jordan issues Butch to give him a mic. Slightly hesitant, the spectacled Irishman gives Jordan his mic to speak. Jordan lands back down to the mat, adjusting the mic's top bit to see if it's working. In that moment, Becky seemed strangely confused of what is going on.
That's odd, she thought. I've been told backstage he wouldn't be addressing any post-match speeches today.
"Now that this debacle is over….", Jordan said, "I just wanted to thank everyone for coming to the show. You guys already know that I'm preparing for special guest referee for the Belfast Pro Wrestling Open's main event. Of course, it's a no disqualification intergender match, which means everything goes and interference is accepted."
Wait a second...I'm sensing something suspicious here, Becky thought.
"With everything that I've achieved in the past few years, I promise to make the Open's main event match special and engaging for you guys to see", Jordan said as the fans clapped. "So without further ado, things for the Lynch-Bálor feud are going as planned-"
Becky quickly jumps over the barricade and enters inside the ring. At first, Jordan wasn't expecting Becky to come over, for he looked slightly puzzled. She looked like as if she's going to punch him straight in the face. It wasn't until Becky too issued another mic from Butch and the ring announcer gave her one. She says on the mic:
"Now hold on, Jordan. I'm familiar with what is at stake here. Yes, it's no disqualification and I'm free to do whatever I please to take down the Demon King. And since they're no consequences dealing with interference, that means anyone can help someone cheat for the win…."
Becky slowly walks up to him and emphasized on her final statement: "Especially the referee. And I hope...you don't backstab me in the main event or else I'm not gonna forgive you for what you've done."
"Ooooohhh….", the fans said. Jordan, hesitant to say something back, slowly looks at the audience left and right. He could just hear the fans chant, "Don't you dare! Don't you dare! Don't you dare! Don't you dare!"
Jordan gestures the audience to calm down and said to Becky, "To make things clear...I'm siding with nobody as referee. Not you. Not Finn. Nobody. Conspiring against somebody in favor of another is a dishonorable act in my mind, so there's nothing suspicious of that."
As the fans clapped for his response, Jordan continued to talk on the mic: "To add to this, it's hard to imagine myself betraying someone like you. I have admirable respect for you as a big sister and a friend, so there's no favouritism involved."
Few people in the crowd said, "Awww….", as they heard Jordan's affection for Becky. The rest laughed afterwards.
Jordan gives a little smirk. "Well, all I can say to you is this…."
He comes up to Becky and shakes her hand. "Good luck. And knock him dead."
"Ayyy!", the fans shouted. Jordan left the ring and Becky smiled as the fans give a standing ovation for her. Then, they chanted loudly: "Slay the Demon King for us! Slay the Demon, slay the Demon! Slay the Demon King for us! Slay the Demon King for us."
Becky couldn't be any happier to receive such enormous reception from the crowd. It's almost overwhelming, the same for her cameo back in June during WWE's UK Tour. But with the fans standing behind both her and Finn, in her heart she feels a sense of dread.
Finn's eyes when they stare down each other in the ring. His worried expression after he left the ring. The way he turned to look at her….was he trying to battle it? Did he still have a voice inside that's keeping him from losing control? Or does he feel sorry of what he said to her?
Becky struggles to smile as she immerses herself in the fan's continuous chants.
"Slay the Demon King for us! Slay the Demon, slay the Demon! SLAY THE DEMON KING FOR US! Slay the Demon King for us..."
Workout Sessions Begin: Two Major WWE Stars Prepare for Battle
The date for the Belfast Pro Wrestling Open may feel like forever, but July is the perfect time for the event's star-studded competitors to train hard for the occasion, especially Becky Lynch and Finn Bálor: two talented Irish wrestlers from WWE that will soon face each other in the toughest match of their careers.
Other sources such as PWInsider and ESPN have officially confirmed that Becky and Finn are training in separate facilities: Becky at the Fighting Spirit Pro Wrestling Gym in Maghull, Liverpool and Finn at the Progress Dojo (aka The Projo) in Brixton, London. Both pro wrestling schools are excellent in training upcoming prospects, but they're honored to bring in such respected veterans of their craft into their area.
Fighting Spirit Pro Wrestling is the youngest promotion in Liverpool's pro wrestling scene ever and it has already made impressions with its local fans. Founded by Zack Gibson and James Drake in 2017, Fighting Spirit provides the sort of attitude, grit, and class that's seen in other UK promotions like PROGRESS, OTT, RevPro, and ICW. WWE's favorite Lass Kicker is currently busy training there, but she's told us upon arrival that she plans to show some "surprising new moves up her sleeve" for the big main event.
Meanwhile, the Projo features some of its recurring stars from the promotion that are yet to compete at the Belfast Pro Wrestling Open: Tyler Bate, Marty Scurll, Will Ospreay, Rampage Brown, and Toni Storm. But the biggest buzz that's going on around in the gym was Finn Bálor, a well-renowned Irish gem from the seaside town of Bray, Ireland known for his stints with ICW and New Japan. Before becoming the Demon King we all know and love, he was highly recognized around the world as Prince Devitt, who was the key founder and leader of the beloved "gaijin" stable, the Bullet Club.
Finn addressed our Wrestling Inc. journalists earlier on the last week of June that although him and Becky never fought each other solo in the ring together in the past, he knows he shouldn't underestimate her abilities. "She's cleverer than you think and a great technician", Finn said. "Once you push her into a corner, she strikes back with astonishing effort and quick thinking. She's absolutely intelligent as a submission expert on and off the ring, but as her former mentor, I know where her flaws lie. And that's all gonna show when I face her at the Open."
Reports further claim that Finn and Becky have "moved on" since that fateful incident at Convention Centre Dublin, but they're still regarded as rivals. The Belfast Pro Wrestling Open can only tell how their heated rivalry is going to end….
July 7th, 3:30pm. Belfast, Northern Ireland. Fit Finlay's interview with BBC Sports.
The male interviewer and Finlay were closely sitting across from one another in a quiet lounge area Finlay chose after receiving a call from BBC Sports. Finlay nervously fuddled with his small mic that camouflaged on his black coat. "You alright? You want one of my cameramen to help you?", the interviewer said. Finlay quickly answered, "No no no, it's fine. Just looks like my mic's blending with my coat. Should've gotten another coat." He chuckled and left the mic alone.
By the time Finlay finished adjusting his mic, the cameraman informed them that they're now live on the set.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Finlay", the interviewer greeted his client. "How are you doing?"
"Fine, thank you. Glad to be here."
"So Finlay….people are buzzing about this special event going on that you've planned for 3 years. You know, the Belfast Pro Wrestling Open. August 4th, at the heart of King's Hall. Probably the most-talked about event in the pro wrestling world this year. Um...tell us what will the fans expect from this?"
"Well first off, we have an incredible roster of young talent from other promotions in the UK. They have fought their way through qualifications early this year just to have a chance to prove they are the best at what they do. And I think for BPWO, fans are not just gonna see a collection of matches based on showmanship and in-ring ethics, but they're going to witness several stories being told. Each match has a story to tell and that's what the theme of the Open is all about: telling a story through the eyes of these remarkable wrestlers."
"I like how you said that the Open is about storytelling 'cause pro wrestling fans tend to get lost in the action sometimes. They're so focused on what's going on and half of the time, they're visualizing just how great of a match that was."
"I know executing some of the spots in matches are kind of over the place, but you get the idea. Some fans do actually paid attention to both the action and storylines behind it, though."
"...Do you know who the Headmaster is?"
Finlay smiles and said, "No comment. But the Headmaster is expected to appear after the main event."
The interviewer reads off from his paper of questions. "Possibly the most anticipated match of the entire event - if not the whole year - is the main event between Becky Lynch and Finn Bálor. You have worked with these two back in WWE and now you get to see them face each other for the first time in their careers. What do you think about the growing tensions between these two, knowing that they're best friends?"
"Well, I know Becky and Finn have known each other for a very long time and this personal shift of wanting to rip the living hell out of each other is taking them down places I never thought they would reach. Becky has told me before that she and Finn used to argue and disagree on things in the past, but it never escalated like this. I guess the only way they could settle their frustrations is in the ring. It's gonna be emotionally charged, I'm sure of it."
"Has this main event or the Open something that you've envisioned for a long time? Or partially?"
"Partially. But the Open was something I've never thought would happen in my lifetime. Being a veteran of pro wrestling for 38 years, I was the Belfast Bruiser of my heyday. And during my years as a professional wrestler, I've trained young up-and-comers both physically and mentally. Still even after my retirement, I wanted to show people that Irish wrestling is alive and well. Wrestlers from here always come up to me and tell me that I've made an influence on their careers and they aspire to be like me. So the Open is like a love letter to UK wrestling, especially Irish wrestling."
"So everyone wanted to know…..is Becky and Finn going to deliver at the Open?"
Finlay paused for a moment, then gave a short smile to the interviewer. "100 percent. They're going to bring the house down this August and exceed every fan's expectations. I'm positive they'll do a phenomenal job. They're basically carrying on the legacy that I want them to be."
9:00pm. Outside of Clayton Hotel Ballsbridge.
A tall man with short blonde hair was standing outside the front of Clayton Hotel, looking at the fountain planted in the middle of the garden. His striking blue eyes seem to stare off into the distance, but it adds a bit of intimidation to his enigmatic presence. Wearing a navy blue business suit complete with a blue and white plaid tie, the young man had a dashing bravado and sense of charisma that greatly emanates from his persona to the wrestling ring he's bestowed from Ring of Honor. Cockiness, ruthlessness, and inconceivable sarcasm are his greatest attributes: the makings of an American Nightmare….
The blonde man turned to his smartphone and played a video that caught his eye on YouTube. The one promo where Becky announced to the world of how eager she wants to fight the Bullet Club as she mentions:
"Try to justify yourself by sending these men for my throat and I'll hit them with everything I've got, even if I bled to death! Bad Luck Fale: I'll bust him open. Chase Owens: I'll bust him open. Cody Rhodes: kick his ass tenfold. Hangman Page: irrelevant, but I'll still bust him open. Marty Scurll: definitely kick his ass thousandfold. The Young Bucks: I bust their nuts with low blows. Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa: both bust them open in seconds flat. Hikuleo: I'll bust him open. Yujiro Takahashi and Taiji Ishimori: absolute jokes, I'll bust them open. Kenny Omega...someday he'll die. And last but not least, Stephen Amell….he can go f himself!"
He lowered his smartphone in his right hand and tries to crush it, but he loosened his grip and put it back in his suit pocket. Then, the man spots someone coming to his direction from the hotel's entrance. That someone is one of his greatest accomplices known for wearing a loose piece of rope around his neck: Adam "Hangman" Page.
"Cody….we're going to OTT downtown next week, right?", Adam asked his boss.
"No, son….." Cody Rhodes slowly turns toward Adam and places his hands on his shoulders. Adam nearly gets startled. "We're going to visit them. It seems I have a specific change of plans for OTT's upcoming event. Besides….a certain ginger-haired protégé of our beloved 'PD' has been talking crap about us lately."
Suddenly, Cody delivers the most devious smile Adam has ever seen. "Maybe Devlin knows where she is…."
Dun dun duuuunnnn! Yep...Bullet Club for life. What are the boys gonna do to Becky? Are they gonna start something at OTT? Will Over the Top Wrestling belong to The American Nightmare? I hope not, but it's happening. Bullet Club is about to make an unexpected surprise at OTT in the next chapter, Chapter 7: Too Sweet! Don't miss it!
