Nymeria:
I felt numb. When I woke up, I felt like my body was broken. My eyes flickered and scanned my surroundings. Haymitch was sitting next to the Cod I was laying on. He looked tired. „She's waking up!" he said as soon as he saw my eyes open. I groaned. Slowly memories and thoughts came creeping back into my consciousness. Haymitch reached for my hand. „Nym, please don't move. You have to stay still ok? Only for a bit longer." He looked directly into my eyes, his expression worrisome. I wanted to speak but my brain didn't quite function. My eyes scanned through the room. It was moving. We were still on the Hovercraft. On the way to 13. Without Cinna. And without my mother. When the memory of her collapsing body hit, I felt my heart drop. The next thing I remembered was Joanna and Peeta falling back down into the arena. I almost felt like a kid remembering every single nightmare I'd ever had. Only that those nightmares had happened within a short period of time. „Nymeria?" Haymitch asked in a weird quiet tone I did not know of him. I focused on him. „Did all that happen?" I asked quietly. „Mom, Jo and Peeta…" I knew it was true but I needed to hear it. „We got away? Katniss…and Finnick, and Renn, Beetee …the other rebels. Lesha and…" „we are safe." Haymitch said, softly pressing my Hand. „Almost in 13." he took a long break and I noticed a guy in white overall behind me. A Doctor. „You remember almost everything." the man said. „That is a good sign." I almost laughed. „Is it?" I replied quietly. „It is, Nymeria…." He seemed as if he wanted to say something more but remained quite until he turned to Haymitch:„Her spine will be ok. She should regain a feeling within the next hours. I am glad we did pack enough medical supplies… I'll leave the two of you." „thank you." Haymitch said. „Mom is dead, isn't she?" I asked quietly after a couple breaths. „I am so sorry Nym." My Dad said, tonelessly. I could see the pain in his expression. They had been close friends. I hadn't even thought of that. I felt a shiver run through my body. We both remained quiet for a while, none of us knowing what to say next. I cleared my throat „Is anyone else…dead?" „Percy didn't make it. Peeta and Joanna are still in the Capitol. Everyone else is here." He explained. I nodded. „What happened to me?" I asked tonelessly. „You got shot." Haymitchs voice trembled for a second. He cleared his throat: „Right in the spine. I thought you were dead too, but the doctor was able to reconnect your nerves." I tried to sit up. „You shouldn't-" „I want to." I stated and leaned myself against a wall. My hand wandered over my back and I felt a scar on my spine. Next thing I tried to move my feet. Relive. They moved. „Are you alright?" I asked my father. He looked worn out but there was no sign of a significant injury. „I got lucky." he simply replied. I should still be in the capitol. A voice in my head stated. I should be looking for him. „I have to find Cinna. I can't leave him behind." I said all of a sudden. „Nymeria, you can hardly walk! You went into hypovolemic shock. You need rest." Haymitch looked puzzled. „I need to get back to the Capitol. Mom is dead. And I am not letting them kill him too! Not both of them!" „Nymeria." He begann, picking his next words very very carefully. „We don't even know if he is still-" „Don't say that!" I interrupted him angrily. He obviously didn't expect me to be able to raise my voice like that. Neither did I. „I am sorry. What I am trying to say is that going back there is not an option. And also it's impossible. And" he was interrupted again, not by me though. Plutarch entered the little infirmary. „Katniss has calmed down. Finally. We're almost in 13, Haymitch. Better get ready." Haymitch nodded and Plutarch's gaze fixated on me. „How are you feeling? We were pretty concerned about you, that bullet hit you right between two plates. It seemed impossible that you'd survive." „I'm ok." I replied without really looking at him. „Can I leave you alone?" Haymitch asked hesitantly. „I'm fine." I looked at my hands, then up to my father. „I am fine." I said again, and to my own surprise I sounded confident in what I said. Plutarch nodded, then he gave Haymitch a sign to follow him. He squeezed my hand before he left the rom without another word.
Cinna:
I felt like I was starting to go insane. The white walls of my prison seemed to close in on me and then stretch far out again. I had tried to find the door but of course there was no use. Consus hadn't shown up in a while and I was grateful for his absence. It gave me time. Time to rethink and to regain some strength. I was still weak but at least I was alive. Apparently they hadn't broken any of my bones yet. My ribs were aching and the skin was dark purple. But I was able to move and that was a good sign. The gap in my lower lip still ripped open every now and then because the skin was so dry but my eye felt like it had started to heal too.
The Avox had come back three times. Did that mean three days? I wanted to ask him but he had always left quickly. What was happening outside? What happened to Portia? Did the tributes flee the Arena? Were Katniss and Peeta save in 13? Was Nymeria? The thought of her was painful. After Consus' experiment I was sure I would loose my mind. Her body slumping down to the ground, that gargling noise, the blood. How real were his threats? The peacekeepers had hurt her when they had taken me away. Did they take her too? I buried my face in my palms. „She is fine." I whispered to myself. „She is fine and safe." I felt lost.
The wall parted again and I flinched. It was the young, red haired Avox boy though. A little bit of the tension that had built up in the blink of an eye left my body again. He was holding the same tray as usual with a slice of bread, a glass of water and a red apple. The boy approached me and set it down next to me. He seemed torn between walking away quickly as he had done the last couple of times and … talking to me. He hunkered in front of me for a moment. I reached for his arm and held on to it. „How long have I been in here?" I asked quietly. The Avox closed his eyes. He bit his lip, then he looked at me. His fingers strechted out from his hand and I loosened my grip. „Five?" I whispered. He nodded and got up. „Please!" I needed more information. „What happened outside? Did they make it out?! Nymeria, you must know her. Is she here? Was she caught? And my friend, Portia, do you know her? Do you know wh" He bowed down again and put his hand on my shoulder. Almost unnoticeable he shook his head, frilling his eyebrows as if he was saying ‚not now'. I was about to say something else when the door in the wall opened again. The Avox quickly got up, stepped back from me and left the room. „Thank you." I hushed as he left me.
I didn't have to guess who had entered the room now and a shiver ran down my spine and my heart started to pound. „Good evening, Cinna." something was different about his voice this time. His smeary voice was less cheery, almost angry. „I see, you didn't like your dinner?" The two peacekeepers entered the room behind him and the wall closed up again. „I didn't get to it yet." I replied and coughed. My throat felt sore and dry. „Let's hope that you'll be a little more talkative today." „What is it that you actually want from me?" I asked and tried to sit up straight. I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of talking down to me like that. „You'll be happy to hear that your little plan" he put an emphasis on that word, stretched it out, as if it was the most ridiculous thing he had ever heard. „failed." That meant that I had been in here long enough for the rebels to flee. His last word hit me harder than the peacekeepers fist. „I don't know what you're talking about." I replied drily. The senator gave the big guy a sign and he lifted me up by my shirt and hit me against the wall. I groaned. „Tie him up. We need to have serious conversation now, Cinna. And you better cooperate." The blonde Peacekeeper, named Pricilla came back with the white chair on which I had been tied before. I didn't resist. There was no point. This was my chance to get some information. His anger was a good sign after all. While she tied my hands behind my back Consus kept talking. „We know you were involved. We captured the rebels and some of them were so easy break. Especially your precious mockingjay. Oh she did sing like a bird." I concentrated on my expression. Do not give anything away. He's provoking you. They made it! They have to have made it! „I want to know where they wanted to hide. What was the plan, Cinna?" „Why don't you ask them? If you broke them then why are you waisting your time on me?" A mean grin formed itself on his face. „Because you're my favorite to interrogate." he replied sly. „I've told you before, think about whom your actions might affect. Your little friend is too pretty to have her bleed out like that for real, don't you think? Even though, I have to say I enjoyed the sight of it, didn't you?" My stomach turned upside down. They had left the mutations body next to me on the floor for so long. And the memory of her body collapsing - I would never forget that sight. „Just tell me what you did to her. She was not involved in anything." my own voice sounded so far away. „Do you really think she would betray her father? Yes, I knew about the rebels plans. But she never did. Neither did Portia." If they had not made it out, then I had to do everything I could to at least save as many possible. „Stop lying Cinna! Her father is more than disappointed in her, you know? She is trying so hard to protect yo-„ „What have you done to her?!" I interrupted him. My stomach was still turning and I knew how desperate my voice sounded. The next second the big, blonde peacekeepers hand found my face again. „Haven't you learned any manners, Cinna? Dont yell at me. We're civilized people after all." Consus said in a sweet dripping voice. He enjoyed this so much. „Again, I want to know where they wanted to hide." I felt the gap in my lip opening again and drops of blood made my mouth taste like metal. „If you captured them, then why do you care? You got the mockingjay. That means it's over, doesn't it?" „I want to now the destination now!" I could feel his anger rise. He needed to know. Did that mean he was lying? Of course he was lying. They had made it. They were on their way. Thats why he needed to know where they were going. What I didn't know was whether or not Nym was on the Hovercraft. They had taken her too, hadn't they? „So they made it out, then?" I asked silently. „You want honesty from me Senator, so be honest with me too. They made it, didn't they?" This time I could see his anger. I was right. „Where are they headed?" I smiled. For the first time since I'd been in here. I felt relive. „I am not telling you shit." Another fist. He hit me so hard that my chair fell over and I landed on my tied arms, before my head hit the ground. I groaned. The peacekeeper grabbed my chair, lifted it up and positioned myself in front of Consus again. „Not all of them made it." The senator spat. Apparently he was changing strategy now. „You want honesty? Let's see how you deal with it! Eva Wellsbee, the disgusting traitor, was shot on the spot. So was another rebel. Peeta Mellark and Johanna Mason were captured. And Nymeria was also gunned down." My heart sank. „You're lying" I whispered more to myself then to Consus. His expression was hard to read. He looked content. „Oh Cinna, doesn't honesty feel good? She must have had the most painful death of them all. She was shot right in the spine. I saw her flinching and twitching before she stopped moving." „Thats not true!" I had seen her die once and the thought of her… and Eva. Who was the third one whose name he didn't even bother to remember? He's lying! „Pricilla, I think our guest would like to have proof of the Capitols honesty. Roll the security tape." She reached to her belt and pressed a remote. „Enjoy, Williams." she grinned as one of the walls turned into a screen. I saw the end of the 75th Hunger Games. I saw Haymitch, Lisha and Percy helping the tributes out of the Arena. Then Eva and Nymeria joined them. They were under fire. Nym was on the edge of the platform, reaching for Peeta and Jo. Then they fell. I couldn't watch any longer. I turned my head away but while I did so, Pricilla grabbed my neck and focussed my head on the screen. „You won't want to miss that." Her voice was cheery, almost excited. And then it happened so incredibly fast. When she turned around to say something we couldn't hear, shots were fired and she collapsed, twitching. Tears were running down my Cheeks and I closed my eyes. My whole body was shivering. Another shot. Apparently this was recorded from a peacekeepers helmet. I opened my eyes again and saw Eva collapsing as well, wishing I would have kept my eyes closed. Pricilla pressed the remote again and the wall went back to its agonizing white. „Honesty is great, isn't it Cinna?" I didn't manage to look at him. „That wasn't real. Just like the mutation wasn't real." I whispered then. I wasn't sure if I believed that myself. It could have happened like that. I just didn't want to believe it. „Well, believe whatever you want. Would you like to see Mister Mellark and Miss Mason? They are under our best care, don't you worry." I looked up to him. His cruel smile made me want to yell at him. „I am honestly sorry about Nymeria though. I thought she'd come after her father. What a shame that you ruined her. You dragged her into this rebellion. Well, you did cost her her life in the end. Anyways, I'll leave you to it! You can rewatch it a couple of times. To think about whether it's fake or not." With those words he got up and left the room. The two peacekeepers untied me. Pricilla pressed the remote again. „No, please!" I couldn't watch this again. „Enjoy." she smirked as they followed Consus out of the room. You did cost her her life. His sentence echoed in my mind. What if I hadn't joined the rebellion. Would she be save then? It's my fault. A voice in my head screamed that over and over. I buried my face in my palms and tried to shut the video out that screened again and again. „It's not true!" I whispered to myself. „It's a lie, it has to be." I didn't know how many times i had to listen to the shooting and the yelling until it finally stopped.
