A Fresh Start
Chapter Two Hundred Sixty Two
The man with Jeremiah recognizes Sam's car as it comes down the street, but he has no way of letting Jeremiah know that she's coming. Sinking down in the seat, he waits for them to pass by before he sits up and watches as they pull into her drive way and parks. Two people get out, a man and a woman with the woman obviously being Jeremiah's sister. They split up as soon as they reach the back of the car. The man goes around the house while the woman walks into the clinic.
Leah is coming out of a patient's room when Sam walks into the clinic. "Dr. O'Neill." She says, surprised. "I thought you were taking..."
"I am. I just need something from my office and then I'm going upstairs. Leah I need your discretion, have you seen or heard anything unusual from upstairs?"
"No ma'am, nothing. Is something wrong? Should I call..."
"No, make no calls. Continue as though everything is fine, unless you hear otherwise. Do we have a heavy patient load?"
"No ma'am, this is our last patient until this afternoon. Are you sure you're okay?" Leah asks, watching her.
"I am fine. Continue on like everything is okay." Sam says, walking around her and heading towards her office.
Closing the door behind her, she quickly opens her safe and pulls the .25 out of its case. Making sure that it's fully loaded, she slips the gun into the waistband of her pants and then makes sure her shirt covers it before she closes the safe. Opening the office door, she walks down the hall to the employee break room and then through it to the stairs leading to the upper floors and their house. She pauses at door, pulling her gun out she slowly opens the door and for a moment she freezes at what she see. Jeremiah is standing with his back to her with his arm around Jeffrey, holding a gun to his head. Julien is in the doorway, gun raised. He sees Sam come in and he blinks once before his attention is focused solely on Jeremiah again.
"I will kill him and with him gone she will be forced to return to me. She will never leave again." Jeremiah says, and Sam quickly realizes that he's talking about her.
She ignores the look in Julien's eyes as she opens her mouth and says. "That will never happen, Jeremiah."
He swings around, still holding the gun to Jeffrey's head. He had no idea she was behind him. "He has corrupted..."
"He is my husband and the father of my child and future children. I will not leave him."
"Then I will kill him." Jeremiah says.
"You won't get the chance." Jeffrey says quietly.
"Shut up, sinner." Jeremiah says with disdain.
"Look at the odds surrounding you." Jeffrey says. "You have two trained federal agents pointing guns at you. Your sister is a crack shot. I've seen her do it. I've seen her do a tougher shot than this in worse conditions and she didn't blink an eye. The other agent, I hired the best to protect her from you. If she doesn't drop you, he will."
"I don't think she'll shoot her brother." Jeremiah says, looking at Sam.
"She may not, but I will." Julien says quietly.
"Julien, don't get involved with this." Sam says, taking a step closer to Jeremiah and Jeffrey.
"Stay back Rebeca. I will kill him."
"You won't get the chance Miah. My husband is right, I am a crack shot and if shooting you protects him, I will make that choice."
Jeremiah lifts the gun away from Jeffrey's head, but maintains his hold on him. "You belong with me. Our father wanted..."
"Our father was an evil man. He manipulated everything and everyone to serve his twisted purpose. He held me prisoner in my own home, Jeremiah!"
"You disobeyed his commandments."
"I went to see our mother. A woman he viciously destroyed for the simple reason that she left him after realizing the truth about him."
"She abandoned us."
"She fought for us. You know she did and you know that our father did everything he could to destroy her. Debating this does nothing to solve this situation." Sam says, looking at Jeremiah.
"I can solve it quite easily." Jeremiah says quietly, raising the gun farther away from Jeffrey's head.
The next few moments appear to move in slow motion and it is unclear in Sam's mind afterwards what actually happened. Two shots ring out after Jeremiah pushes Jeffrey out of the way. It's still pointed at Jeffrey so it's unclear who he was meaning to shoot, but Sam believes that either her life, their baby's life by extension or Jeffrey's life is still in danger. The first shot struck Jeremiah in the right shoulder as the second hits his lower abdomen, and hitting the abdominal aorta artery. Arterial blood rushes out and he drops instantly. The chaos that happens afterward is still unclear to Sam as well. She doesn't remember dropping her gun or rushing to Jeremiah's side. Pressing her hand into his stomach as he groans softly, he looks at her and says. "If I die, my death is on your hands."
Leah and the medical staff from downstairs rush up the stairs after they hear the shots. Sam is still on the floor beside Jeremiah. She looks up as her staff comes into the room. "He needs help, please." She begs.
Jeffrey comes to her as Leah kneels beside her. "Leah, I need..."
"Sam, you can't do this." She says, as Jeffrey tries to pull her away.
She shakes him off. "I have to stop the bleeding. He'll bleed..."
"Sam, let them work." Jeffrey says, as Julien pulls his phone from his pocket and dial 911.
Frank is still at the hospital when the call comes through about a shooting at Sam's clinic. "You and you, come with me." He says, pointing at two officers before he rushes out of the hospital. They quickly follow him.
Julien hangs up as Jeffrey pulls Sam away from her brother. He holds her as Sam stares at him. "The ambulance is on its way." Julien says, as Jeffrey nods once.
"I shot... I shot him, J." Sam says, her voice is broken as she stares at the scene in front of her.
"You had not choice, Sam. You were defending me." Jeffrey whispers, as Julien steps to the door. Opening, he lets two EMT's inside.
"What happened?" One of the EMT's asks, as they rush to Jeremiah's side.
"I shot him." Sam says, staring at her brother as one of the EMT's looks at her.
"She was defending me." Jeffrey clarifies. The EMT glances at him.
"His blood pressure is really low. We need to get him to the ER." The other EMT says, as Frank walks in.
"Jeffrey, Sam, what happened?" He asks, looking at Jeremiah lying in the floor with a lot of blood covering his chest."
"I…."
"Sam, hush." Jeffrey says, turning to Frank. "
"Sir, we have to transport him now." The EMT's says, looking at Frank.
"I'm going with him." Sam says, moving away from Jeffrey.
"Sam…." Jeffrey says, reaching for her.
"No, I have to go." She says, watching the EMT's work on her brother.
"Jeffrey, we need to find out what happened." Frank says.
"Frank, we'll explain everything when we get to the hospital." Jeffrey says, following Sam as she follows the EMT's out of the house.
Frank turns to the two other officers. "I want you stay here and get these statements and then come to the hospital." He says, following Jeffrey and Sam.
"Yes Sir." They reply. They split up, One speaking with Julien and the other speaking with Sam's staff, which couldn't provide much as to what happened.
When the ambulance rolls by along with SPD, Jeremiah's accomplice decides to leave. He hadn't planned on all this going down. He was simply supposes to pick him up. Jeremiah changed everything once he got into the car. Heading home, he quickly packs a bag and heads for the border. It was time to relocate before the police figures out that he helped with this stunt.
As the ambulance pulls into the bay outside the ER, Rick comes out with the ER time. The driver had radioed ahead, giving the ETA for their arrival and stats at that time. Sam stares at Jeremiah while EMT's work to stabilize him. He's bleeding a lot from his stomach wound which probably means that she's hit an artery, either the abdominal aorta, or one of the many that ran through out the lower abdomen into the legs and reproductive organs. There was no telling where the bullet went once it enter his body until they got him to the hospital and in the O.R.
As they unload him the first EMT explains Jeremiah's vitals and their treatment so far. As they roll him into the E.R, Sam follows them. They are about to take him back when Rick looks up and sees her. "Sam, you can' be back here." He says.
She looks at him and she so desperately wants to argue with him, but she knows he's right. She can't treat her own brother. She stops and watches as they roll him into the E.R. Jeffrey comes in a few moments later and he finds Sam standing in front of the doors to the E.R. "Come on." He says quietly, taking her hand.
She pulls away and for a moment he thinks she's going to fight being drawn away. "You'll get blood all over you." She says, looking around for a place that she can wash her hands.
Jeffrey looks around and finally spots a lavatory just down the hall. "Here." He says, taking her hand again and leading her away. When they reach the door, he opens it for her with his free hand and says. "Go in and wash your hands. I'll be right here when you come out." She walks in quietly and he closes the door behind her.
He's standing outside the lavatory when Frank walks in. He looks around until he spots Jeffrey standing by a door. He walks over to him. "Jeffrey, where's Sam." He demands.
"She's washing her hands." Jeffrey says, standing up.
"What happened? How did he end up shot?"
"How did he end up out of jail?" Jeffrey asks.
"We're working on that, but right now…." The door opens to lavatory and Sam steps out.
"Right now, I need to take care of my wife. We'll answer your questions Frank and maybe you'll have some answers for us." Jeffrey says, slipping his arm around Sam's waist to lead her away.
"You're hands, you need to wash them." She says, looking at the hand that he held hers with.
"I can…."
"I'll be fine, go wash your hands." Sam says, opening the door again.
"Can you give us a minute?" Jeffrey asks, turning to Frank. He looks at them and then turns away. Quietly Jeffrey says. "I don't want you to say any until I get back." She looks at him. "Please, just wait till I get back, okay." She nods. He glances at Frank and then walks into the lavatory, letting the door close behind him.
Sam turns to Frank. He walks over to her. "You should sit down, Sam." He says quietly.
"I'll wait till Jeffrey comes out." She says, staring at the doors in front of her. She's wants to be in there with them, but then she doesn't. A part of her can't understand what happened.
Frank knew better than to say anything to her without Jeffrey being there beside her. He didn't believe that Sam intently tried to kill her brother. He stands before her, watching her. "They are doing everything they can, Sam. You know that." She doesn't reply. "Rick is…." The door opens and Jeffrey steps out. He's there beside her.
"You need to sit down." He says, taking her hand and leading her away from the E.R doors to the waiting room.
They haven't really settled when Rick comes out. Sam gets up. "Sit down." Rick says, waving her to sit. She sinks into the chair again. Rick sits down in front of them. "They've taken him up to surgery."
"What's his prognosis?" Sam asks.
"We actually had to rush him into surgery. He's loosing a lot of blood, which we have to stop if he has any chance of recovery."
"What is the chance of recovery?" Jeffrey asks.
"It's too early to tell. The next forty eight hours are critical, as you know Sam." He says, as she nods. "If he holds it together, after that he has a much more significant chance of survival."
"If you want to go upstairs, the surgeon will come speak with you after they're finished."
"I'll take her up there." Jeffrey says, as Rick nods.
"I'm going to go finish up the paperwork. If you need anything, please come to me." He says, standing up.
"Thank you Rick." Jeffrey says, holding out his hand.
They shake hands, as Sam mumbles. "Thank you Rick." He nods, laying his hand on her shoulder, squeezing gently before he walks away.
Jeffrey turns to Sam. "Can you make it upstairs?"
"I'm not helpless Jeffrey." She says standing up. He follows her with Frank walking behind them.
They're about to get onto the elevator, when the two officers he left at the Sam's house arrive. "I'll meet you up there." Frank says, as Jeffrey looks at him before he and Sam step onto the elevator and the doors slide shut.
"What did you find out?" Frank asks as soon as the door closes.
"We didn't get much from the staff Sir. None of them knew that anything was happening until they heard the shots. The only one that actually knew that Sam was home was the PA. They ran into each other and the female perp…."
"Her name is Sam, or Dr. O'Neill." Frank says, the officer nods.
"Dr. O'Neill asked if she had heard anything suspicious from upstairs and when the PA said she hadn't she insisted that every one care on as planned."
"Did they know she was armed?" Frank asks.
"No, none of them saw her with the gun." The first officer replies. "Dr. O'Neill's bodyguard said that she didn't get a weapon until the arrived back at the house."
"Have you spoken with the victim's sister or the husband?" The second officer replies
"He has a name and he's your boss." Frank says.
"Yes sir, have you spoken with Mayor O'Neill?"
"Not yet. We were just told that the victim was brought immediately into surgery. They are in the O.R waiting room right now. I'm going to speak with them now. I want you two to return to prison ward and continue the investigation into how the victim escaped police custody."
"Yes sir. We did find a third weapon at the scene." One of the officers says.
"Run it, maybe it will point us in the direction on how the prisoner escaped last night." Frank says.
"Yes sir." The officer says, as the second one nods. They leave and Frank calls for the elevator.
Jeffrey has just gotten Sam to sit down when an older man in surgical scrubs walks towards them. They both stand up. Sam looks at him and slowly shakes her head no. "I'm Dr. Willis." He says, holding out his hand. Sam doesn't take it so Jeffrey does.
"Is he…."
Dr. Willis interrupts him. "I'm sorry but we did everything we could. He simply lost too much blood by the time that we got him into surgery that he went into shock and there was no response when we tried to bring him out of it. I'm sorry." Dr. Willis says, as Jeffrey nods.
Jeffrey turns to Sam as Dr. Willis walks away. "Sam…."
"I killed him J. I killed my brother." Sam whispers, starting to shake.
Jeffrey is there in a moment, pulling her into his arms. "You defended us." He says softly, trying to comfort her.
As the doors open, Frank steps out to find Jeffrey holding a clearly hysterical Sam. "What happened?" Frank asks, walking up to them. Jeffrey looks up and then quickly shakes his head. He won't allow Frank to interview her now. He can't. "Jeffrey, what happened?" Frank asks again. Jeffrey's not sure why he feels threatened by Frank or why he's worried that somehow Frank will think Sam intentionally shot her brother. If Frank knew anything about Sam, he would know that wasn't even possible. "We need to at least know what happened." Frank says.
"It can wait." Jeffrey says, worried as Sam falls apart in his arms.
"Jeffrey, you know I have to ask her questions. We have to determine if…."
"This was not intentional Frank. She was defending me." He turns his attention to Sam. "Can you seat down Beca?" He whispers softly in her ear.
"He… I…" She clings to Jeffrey. Jeffrey looks at Frank.
"I can't leave her right now and she can't talk to you. I have to get Dr. Sedgwick here. Can you please take care of that for me? After I'm sure Sam's alright, I'll speak to you about what happened."
Frank looks at him and then nods. Turning, he goes to find a nurse while Jeffrey tries to calm Sam down before this affects the baby.
After the cops leave Sam's house, Julien locks it up. He slowly drives over to Cedars. Pulling up, he gets out of his car and is walking towards the hospital when he sees Marah coming out. "Marah." He says, as she walks up.
"Julien, why are you here?" She looks around and doesn't see Sam. "Where is Sam?" She asks, looking at him again.
"She's in there with Jeffrey." He says quietly.
"Did something happen, the baby…!"
"No, she's physically fine, both her and the baby. At least she was when I saw her last."
"I don't understand." Marah says, looking confused.
"There was an incident at her house today."
"What happened?"
"We were at her sisters when she said she had to go. She said that she felt like something was wrong with Jeffrey. So we left. When we got to their house, we split up. I came in the front door and she came in through the clinic downstairs."
"Everything was alright."
"No, Jeremiah was there and when I came in, he pulled Jeffrey and held him hostage with a gun to his head. Shortly after I came in, Sam came upstairs and she overheard Jeremiah telling me that he was going to take Sam back to his place and that she never would leave him again."
"Wait, who is Jeremiah?"
"That's her brother. I was brought here to protect her from him. Jeffrey believed that he would try to harm Sam because she was set to testify in an upcoming trial for the mother of one of Sam's patient's."
"What was the mother accused of?"
"Kidnapping."
"Why would Sam testify for her?"
"She believes the woman was only acting in her daughter's best interests. She recognized some other examples of abuse. When she realized that her patient's mother had been arrested, she volunteered to testify on her behalf, which brought me into the picture."
"Why would that bring you into the picture?"
"Jeffrey believed that Sam's brother would try to keep her from testifying after Sam figured out that her patient was actually a member of her brother's organization so he contacted me to be her body guard. That's why I'm in Springfield."
"I've met Sam. I don't know her that well, but I don't think she needs to be taken care of or guarded. She worked with Jeffrey so I'm sure she has had the same training as Jeffrey."
"She has and she can. But Jeffrey wants to protect her and the baby. I'm sure you've got questions, but I need to get inside."
"What happened today? Was Jeffrey or Sam hurt?"
"No, neither one of them was hurt but her brother was shot by both of us."
"You shot him." Marah takes a step towards him. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Julien says, laying a hand on her arm. "But I need…."
"No, go. I understand." Marah says, stepping back. "I'll see you later.
"Of course." Julien says, turning he walks into the hospital as Marah pulls out her phone.
Reva is talking with Cassie when her cell phone rings. Pulling it out of her purse, she sees its Marah. "It's Marah." She says, as Cassie nods. "Marah, is something wrong?"
"No every thing is fine. Well with me everything is fine. I'm at Cedars."
"Why are you at Cedars?"
"Just my yearly exam, but I as I was leaving I ran into Julien and he's here for Sam and Jeffrey."
"Sam and Jeffrey!" Reva says, looking at Cassie. "Is the baby… did Sam go into labor?"
"No, Sam and the baby are fine. Well I think they're fine. He didn't say she had gone into labor."
"Marah, you're not making sense." Reva says. "Why are Sam and Jeffrey at Cedars?"
"He said that Sam's brother was shot."
"Her brother was shot!"
"I don't know the details really. He tried to tell me some of it, but he wanted to go inside. And I thought you and Dad…."
"No, you're right. I'll call your father and I'm on my way." Reva says, hanging up a moment later.
"What happened?" Cassie asks.
"Apparently Sam's brother's been shot. Marah just ran into Sam's body guard at Cedars and they are both there." Reva says, pulling up Josh's contact.
After a couple rings, Josh answers. "Josh Lewis." He says, looking over some plans for their current project.
"Josh, its Reva. Are you busy?"
"No not right now, why?"
"I just received a call from Marah. Jeffrey and Sam are at Cedars…."
"Did Sam go into…?"
"No, or I mean not that I know of. Marah said that she and baby were fine. But her brother's been shot. I don't know all the details, but I'm at the Beacon with Cassie right now."
"I'm on my way." Josh says, putting the plans down.
"So am…" Cassie gestures to get her attention. "Actually Cassie and I are on our way."
"I'll meet you there." Josh says, walking out of his office. He hangs up and then looks at Wanda. "I'm headed to Cedars. If you see Billy, tell him to come there." Josh says. He turns away and then turns back around. "Tell him that Jeffrey and Sam are there, but the baby is alright. He just needs to come."
"I will." Wanda says, as Josh leaves the office.
Julien walks off the elevator to find Jeffrey holding Sam. By the sound of Sam's sobs, he knew that Jeremiah hadn't survived the shooting. He walks up quietly and clears his throat. Looking up, Jeffrey sees him. "I'm sorry." He says to both of them.
"Thank you." Jeffrey says quietly for both of them.
"Is there anything I can do?" He asks, as Jeffrey shakes his head no. Nodding once, Julien fades into the back ground, standing guard over both of them.
About thirty minutes later, Frank walks up. "Jeffrey." He says. Jeffrey looks up. "Dr. Sedgwick is on her way in." Jeffrey nods still holding Sam.
She's calmed down some, but she's still clinging to Jeffrey and still crying. "Has anyone contacted Megan?" Frank asks.
Closing his eyes, Jeffrey shakes his head no. "I didn't think about it." He says, trying to reach for his phone.
"Don't worry about it, I'll go tell her and bring her here." Frank says, turning to go.
Silence falls again as Frank walks away. Jeffrey maneuvers Sam over to one of the couches and helps her sit down before he settles in beside her. He's still holding her when Dr. Sedgwick walks up. "Jeffrey, Sam." She says quietly. Jeffrey looks up and then moves to get up but she stops him. "What happened?"
Sighing, Jeffrey gives the abridged version of what happened. "Her brother came to the house. He had a gun. He was intending to take Sam. Of course Sam wasn't there at the time but he forced his way into the house. I'm not sure how she got there, but she walked in to him holding me at gun point after Julien breached the front door. There was a confrontation and she was forced to shoot him. He was rushed here but he didn't make it and she hasn't stopped crying since they told us. Can you give her anything to calm her down?"
"Unfortunately no, any medication used to stop anxiety would harm the baby. Let me get a room and I'll see what I can do." Dr. Sedgwick says, as Jeffrey nods. He's still holding Sam, gently rubbing her back and caressing her hair. Every once in a while he'll lightly kiss the side of her head and whisper nonsense in her ear. Less than five minutes later, Dr. Sedgwick returns. "I've got a room available. Sam, can you…?" Jeffrey stands up and then sweeps her into his arms. She latches onto him as he carries her to the room and sits her on the bed and steps back. Sam reaches for him. "Sam I need you to focus on me." Dr. Sedgwick says. Sam looks at her and then turns to Jeffrey. "Sam, look at me." She does but she's still crying. "I need to you to get control. This isn't good for the baby." Sam looks at her but continues crying. "I need you to close your eyes." Sam shakes her head no. "You have to."
"I'll, I'll see him." She whispers, still crying.
"I know, but you have to calm down. You have to get control for your baby." Dr. Sedgwick replies, holding onto her hand.
"I want Jeffrey."
"I'm right here, Beca. But please do what she says. You have to calm down, for the baby, sweetheart." He says, gently caressing her face.
"I can't…."
Jeffrey shakes his head no. "You're the strongest woman I know. You can do this, just close your eyes and breathe deep. "Come on Beca." He encourages her. He's holding her hand and gently caressing it while she watches him. "It's going to be alright, baby. I promise you."
"He's, he's… He's dead, J. I killed him." She whispers, after she swallows. He nods as she takes her first deep breath.
"I know you did. But you had to. He left you no other choice Beca. He was either going to kill me, or all of us." He says, taking a deep breath with her. She follows him taking several deep breaths, still crying but slowly becoming calmer.
"I'll be right back. Keep talking to her." Dr. Sedgwick says, as Jeffrey nods.
When she returns, she has a fetal monitor and blood pressure machine. Jeffrey moves out of the way when she comes in. "Sam I want you to lie back. I'm going to check the baby's heart rate and your blood pressure. Jeffrey helps her to lie back and then moves out of the way again letting Dr. Sedgwick do her thing. He's still taking deep breaths and Sam's following him. "Okay, her blood pressure is elevated, but the baby's heart rate is strong so it hasn't affected the baby. Keep breathing with her and we'll keep monitoring her blood pressure." Dr. Sedgwick says, as Jeffrey nods.
Frank pulls up to Megan's house. For a moment, he looks towards her front door and the opens his door and gets out. He carefully walks up the sidewalk towards her door. Taking a deep breath, he rings the doorbell and then steps back to wait. When Megan opens the door, she's surprised to see Frank there. "It's not time to go yet." She looks back over her shoulder.
"No, it's not time to go. Can I come in?" He asks his tone serious.
"Sure." She says, stepping back. She closes the door behind him and then turns around. "If you're here to tell me that you're not taking me…."
"I'm not here about tonight." Frank says, holding up his hand. He pauses for a moment and then sighs. "This is hard enough when you don't know the people involved."
"What are you talking about?"
Sighing, Frank looks at her and then says. "Jeffrey sent me to get you. He's at the hospital with…."
"Sam, the baby, oh god did something happen to…?"
"Sam and the baby were fine. At least they were when I left to get you. But Sam was a bit upset."
"Did something happen to Jeffrey? Sam left here in a rush this morning. She said that she felt like something had happened to Jeffrey. He's…."
"He's fine. He's with Sam. But you need to come to the hospital with me. I believe they both need you right now. It's about your brother."
"My brother, he's in jail. How is he involved?"
"I don't know all the details yet but that he escaped last night from police custody after we transported him to Cedars. After that I don't know what happened until I heard the 911 call for am ambulance to be brought to Sam's clinic for a shooting victim." While Frank's talking Megan is looking around the room. "What are you looking for?"
"I need my keys and purse."
"I'll drive you." Frank says, as Megan spots her purse. She grabs it and then turns for the door.
"Let's go." She says when Frank doesn't move.
"Umm Meg, you might want to put some shoes on and maybe get a coat?" He says, nodding at her feet." She looks down and then back up. He walks over to her. Laying his hand on her shoulder, he says. "Take a deep breath and then go get your shoes and coat. I'll be here waiting."
Taking a deep breath, she rushes down the hall to her room. Grabbing her shoes, she quickly pulls them on before going back to the living room and the hall closet. Pulling out her coat, she pulls it on as she walks over to Frank, who is waiting by the door. "I'm ready." She says, pulling her hair out from under her coat as he hand her purse and opens the door.
As they walk down the steps, he surveys the sidewalk. "Why hasn't your landlord cleared this?"
"I asked, but he said it's my responsibility and I haven't…." Frank holds up his hand to silence her. Taking her arm, he helps her to his car and then walks around to the driver's side. Getting in, he closes the door and they pull away from the house.
As they pull away from the house, she says. "You said a shooting victim."
"Yes." Frank says, carefully driving down her street.
"If Sam and Jeffrey are okay, who was shot?"
He stops at the stop sign at the end of her street before he answers. "Your brother was the victim."
"Jeremiah, how, and who shot him?"
"Like I said before, I don't know all the details."
"Well then tell me what you know!" Megan demands, looking at him.
"Last night, you brother was transported to Cedars after being found in his cell and experiencing severe abdominal pain and other symptoms. The officers transferred him to Cedars and two officers were set to guard him after he was admitted. Sometime during the night, your brother overpowered his guard and he escaped. It wasn't discovered until this morning when the morning nurse when to check on him and found the guard in your brother's bed. I was immediately called in and I was at the hospital when the 911 call came in about the shooting at Sam's clinic. I met Jeffrey at the hospital and he sort of brushed me off in favor of taking care of Sam."
"Of course he's taking care of Sam."
"I know." Frank says, sighing. "I didn't mean anything by it. I was simply repeating what he said to me. He told me that he had to take care of Sam and that he would talk to me after he had her settled. The only other thing he told me was that it wasn't intentional and that she was defending him." He says, as they drive through town.
