A little note: As seen on Dokuga. Originally this was a interconnected drabble collection created with the prompts from dokuga_contest. However, since dokuga_contest is no longer running, I'll update as I see fit with prompts I select myself.

The Fool
The atmosphere at the fortress was even more tense than ever before. Kagome and Sesshomaru were both very weary of Nohime, as well as her 'servant'. Kagome rarely left Sesshomaru's side, in fear of something unexpected occuring. He did not seem to mind, and they were often spotted walking together through the halls.
They were now headed for dinner, and Kagome was just a pace behind Sesshomaru as they walked. Ever since he had marked her, they hadn't really had much time to themselves, and it was getting to Kagome, especially since they were supposed to prepare for the ceremony where they would officialy become mates.
"Stop frowning," Sesshomaru's voice snapped Kagome out of her reverie. They came to a halt in the hall. Sesshomaru had turned to face her, his expression soft. He never showed such affection when another person was present, and Kagome and the pups had been the only individuals who had been on the receiving end of Sesshomaru's more 'human' qualities.
"Sorry," Kagome muttered, twiddling her thumbs.
"Do not let Nohime and Nobunaga bother you," Sesshomaru tried to reassure her. "I will deal with them if they choose to make their move."
"I know," Kagome muttered again. "I just don't understand why they want you dead."
"Nobunaga wants this land," Sesshomaru stated. Kagome blinked, surprised.
"This is not the first time he's challenged you?" Kagome asked, flabbergasted.
Sesshomaru shook his head. "No. This will be his third attempt. The fool cannot accept that this land is a lost cause."
"And Nohime? What does she have to do with this?"
Sesshomaru sighed. "You claim you believe she is being manipulated, yes?"
Kagome nodded.
"Well, I am inclined to agree with you. It is no secret that Nobunaga favours his concubine, Kitsuno. Nohime may not love Nobunaga, but she values reputation - being labelled the barren and useless wife brings shame on her. Perhaps Nobunaga promised her some favour in exchange for bringing him my head?"
"That's plausible," Kagome agreed. "But how does she plan to kill you? Especially now that she cannot use the pups as leverage without placing herself in danger. Because she was right, I will challenge her. And end her."
The corner of Sesshomaru's lips twitched as Kagome announced this. She immediately knew it was his version of a smile, and that he was clearly impressed with her response. It warmed her heart.
"I do not know," Sesshomaru replied. "But I have a feeling her frustration and impatience will be her downfall. Whatever she has planned, it won't be enough to harm a hair on my head."
Kagome pursed her lips and nodded. She wasn't going to take any chances, which meant she was not going to leave his side or let the pups out of her sight. With that settled in her mind, she linked her arm with his, surprising him, but he did not pull away. They continued their journey to the dining hall.
