Do No Harm
Kagome could feel her heart constrict in her ribcage as she stared wide-eyed at the empty space across from Inuyasha. The blood was pumping rapidly through her veins as panic rushed to the surface. Before she even realised it, she stumbled from her hiding place behind Mo-Mo and mindlessly made her way over to Inuyasha.
The half-demon was panting heavily, but he looked equally as panicked as she. When she moved into his plane of view, he looked up, the words not coming, but his eyes showing it all.
Where was Sesshomaru? What had he done?
Kagome was the first to manage to speak: "D-did you hit him?"
Inuyasha swallowed thickly. "I…think so."
Kagome had to fight the urge to wail. There was no need to cry yet. He could be fine. He may have dodged. He is probably just hiding in a tree.
"I didn't mean to!" Inuyasha quickly defended himself. "I just…some dust got into my eye, and I was so angry, and then there was this smell and…"
Myoga jumped onto Inuyasha's shoulder. "Master Inuyasha, calm down."
It was only then that Kagome realised the half-demon was hyperventilating. Grasping his shoulders, she pulled to make him look at her. "Inuyasha, look at me. Breathe. In. Out. In. Out."
The half-demon mimicked her and seemed to settle. She sighed in relief and squeezed his shoulders affectionately. Then frowned when she realised that Inuyasha, the headstrong, bull-headed and fierce member of their group had just had a panic attack. Over his brother.
"Are you alright?" she asked.
"Yeah," Inuyasha replied. "I guess the adrenaline got to me. And while I did challenge Sesshomaru, I did not want to kill him. He is your mate, after all."
Kagome smiled.
Inuyasha looked down at Myoga. "He isn't dead, right?"
Myoga scratched his little chin. "Unlikely."
Totosai meandered over. "He is definitely not dead. You cannot kill him."
Inuyasha huffed. "Thanks for the vote of confidence, geezer."
Totosai frowned. "No, you misunderstand. I am not saying you are not strong enough to be able to kill him, I mean you literally cannot."
Inuyasha, Kagome and Myoga blinked in confusion.
"You will have to elaborate Totosai," Myoga stated.
"The Tenseiga protected him," Totosai replied.
"The Tenseiga?" Kagome asked.
Totosai nodded. "The sword I fashioned out of Lord Saitou's fang that now belongs to Sesshomaru. The Tessaiga cannot mortally harm the wielder of the Tenseiga. When the Wind Scar hit, the Tenseiga will have teleported Lord Sesshomaru to safety."
Kagome gasped. "So he is safe?"
Totosai nodded again. "Wounded, perhaps, but safe, yes. And probably nearby."
"I'm going looking for him!" Kagome announced as she spun around on her heel. The pups perked up at her words and lunged towards her, but she shook her head and knelt by their side. "You cannot come with me."
They whined and brushed their wet snouts against her legs. Kagome giggled, but shook her head again. "No. Stay here with Sango." She looked up at Sango as she said this, and the demon-slayer smiled and nodded her consent. Kagome smiled in gratitude and stood so she could leave. The pups whined again and in a flash of white, they stood before her in their human form.
"Mama," Mamoru begged. "Please don't leave us."
Mayu did not say anything, but Kagome knew that the girl was very likely desperate to go find her father.
"I will be right back," Kagome promised. "With your father. You can play with Shippo! He has some nice toys. And he is also like a son to me, so that makes him your brother."
The pups' attention jumped to the little fox, who blushed a deep crimson at the attention and at the confession from Kagome.
