Among the Trees

It was cold. Little Rin shivered as she stumbled through the forest, her hands empty. She had hoped to find some food, but luck was not on her side. Instead she was heading home with nothing, her belly empty and her feet frozen and dirty. Her sandals had broken moons ago. Perhaps she could sneak out into the night to get some fish from the river.

Thoughts plagued by food, Rin did not notice the person resting against a tree when she entered a clearing. It was only when they sat up and hissed that she gasped and stumbled backwards. Eyes as red a blood glared at her menacingly. And then they faded into a rich honey colour, and all evidence of menace vanished.

She had never seen a man so beautiful before. He could not possibly be human!

Still unsure of what he was, or who he was, Rin partially hid behind a tree trunk as she watched him. He looked injured – his kimono was covered in mud and some blood, and his cheeks and brilliant silver hair were smeared with dirt. He was watching her as well, his gaze aloof, but also somewhat curious.

Rin decided he probably meant no harm. And that she should help him. So with a nod to herself, she spun around and ran to her little hut in the village. She needed to get some salve, cloth strips and food. She did not have much, but if there is one thing her mother had taught her when she still lived, it was to be generous and compassionate.
