Why Are You Smiling?

Sesshomaru could be a very patient person, but he did have his limits when it was his younger brother who put him such a position where he was forced to be patient. The Wind Scar had done quite a number on him, and while his youkai blood sped up the healing process, it was still taking too long for his liking. The longer he was away from Kagome, the longer he left her with the deranged biological mother of his pups. He could not allow that.

He sighed in frustration. Why had Yuuki demanded the return of her daughter? As far as he knew, the two were not really on speaking terms. In fact, he was certain his mother had once said that Yuuki had given up on redeeming Yohime. And now here she was, calling in the debt she was owed for saving his life.

Rustling in the brush alerted him that he was no longer alone. One sniff told him the human girl who had cared for him the previous day had returned. Soon after, she stepped into the clearing, another leaf with root vegetables in hand. But there was something different today…

His eyes narrowed as he took in her dishevelled appearance. Her skin and clothes were dirtier than before, and her scent was more metallic and mixed with the sweaty stench of others. Sesshomaru could feel the disgust settle in his gut at what it implied.

"What happened to your face?" he asked.

The girl startled, but instead of answering she simply ran over to him and held out the food. Sesshomaru had to fight the urge to roll his eyes. The girl realised he was not taking the food, despite him telling her repeatedly he did not need it, and looked down at her knees sadly.

"If you do not wish to tell me, then do not," Sesshomaru muttered as he turned away from her. He did, however, notice her look up with a smile on her face.

"Why are you smiling? I did not say anything that warrants it," he replied. Humans. Even being promised to one still did little for allowing him to understand them. He made a mental note to pay more attention. If he were to truly spend his life with Kagome, he really needed to learn more about her and her species.

The girl continued smiling, put the food down, and then stood and ran off. Sesshomaru shook his head, leaned back against the tree, closed his eyes, and sighed. He hoped he would be able to move soon. Kagome needed him.
