Kagome's Tears
Kagome paused when she felt the presence of two shards. She blinked, surprised by the sudden sensation. It had been months since she last truthfully paid attention to the jewel. But just as quickly as they appeared, they vanished. Kagome could already hear Inuyasha's insistence on going after the shards. She chuckled to herself. He would just have to suck it up – her priority was finding Sesshomaru.
Determined, she continued walking, only to freeze in her steps at the sight of something oddly resembling a human lying on the path ahead. Concerned, she increased her pace.
It was a child. Kagome swallowed the lump in her throat as she knelt beside the little girl and used her good arm to check for a pulse.
Nothing.
Fighting back tears that suddenly appeared out of nowhere, Kagome lifted the girl, with great difficulty, up with her good arm and cradled her against her breast.
That was how Sesshomaru found them. He stared in astonishment at his mate-to-be and how, without even knowing the little girl, was crying over her passing. He scolded himself for being surprised – Kagome loved children. She had proven this many moons ago, when she charmed his pups on their first meeting. It was part of the reason why he loved her.
Kagome looked up at her mate-to-be, and felt her emotions soar. One part of her was relieved to see he was safe and unharmed, but the other was still mourning the unnecessary loss of life.
The look on her face was enough to convince Sesshomaru. Without a word, he unsheathed his sword.
