Eyes So Blue
The first thing Rin saw when her eyes fluttered open were a pair of soft and kind eyes the colour of the sky. They belonged to a woman - young, and dressed in a rather expensive looking kimono. Rin blinked. The woman was beautiful. Was she an angel? Was this heaven?
It looked like the woman had been crying. Her eyes were a bit glassy and puffy, but the minute Rin smiled weakly at her the sadness vanished. She smiled in return, and the arm cradling Rin against her pulled her closer. Rin let out a squeak at the show of affection, as well as the slight tenderness she felt throughout her body. The woman balked and pulled back.
"Are you alright?" the woman asked. "Does it hurt?"
Rin shook her head. It was a dull ache, not really pain. She had just been surprised. Because if she was feeling tender, it probably meant she was not dead. And this was not heaven. And the woman holding onto her was not an angel.
How did she survive? She was certain the wolves who had chased her caught up with her. She remembered the pain and darkness that had enveloped her. Curious, Rin took the chance to look around her. She froze when she saw who was looming over her and the woman.
He found her!
She smiled at him. And much to her surprise, his lips twitched and a very small and very easily missed smile formed. A giddy feeling washed over her at the returned smile. It was the most emotion he had ever shown her in the last few days that she had been taking food to him. She was also so happy to see that he was standing.
"Can you stand?" the woman asked, bringing Rin's attention back to her. Rin nodded and with the woman's help stood up. This allowed her to see the woman more properly. She was tall and skinny, her dark hair was clean, shiny and cascaded down her back. Her kimono was accompanied by a formal obi. She was dressed well, like the man with her. Rin did not fail to notice that her right arm was in a sling.
"I'm Kagome," the woman introduced herself. "This is Sesshomaru." She pointed at the demon as she said that. Rin looked up at him and smiled again. So they knew each other.
"Do you live near here?" Kagome asked. Rin bit her lip and nodded.
"Want us to take you home?" Kagome also asked. Rin deflated a bit and looked down at her feet. They were incredibly dirty.
"She has no home to return to," Sesshomaru's voice cut in. Kagome looked up at him, confused. Rin also looked up to observe them.
"What do you mean?" Kagome asked.
"I can smell it," Sesshomaru said as he looked up at the sky. "Human blood. Lots of it. And wolves. Her village was attacked and the people massacred."
Kagome's eyes widened and she quickly turned back to Rin. She looked incredibly sad. "Oh, sweetheart, I am so sorry."
Rin shook her head, hoping it conveyed that she was okay. Well, sort of. She was terrified, and her heart ached, but truthfully the loss of the village was not that much of a burden. Her family was gone and the villagers treated her horribly. But now what? Where would she go? What would she do? She was but a child - she would not last out in the wild by herself.
It looked like Kagome wanted to say something, but Sesshomaru had decided that moment to turn on his heel and start walking away. Kagome sputtered and stood up, her hand grasping Rin's and squeezing tightly.
"Sesshomaru!" Kagome exclaimed. "Where are you going? We can't just leave her!"
Sesshomaru stopped and glanced at them over his shoulder. "I never said we are leaving her."
