Tenseiga

Rin followed behind Kagome and Sesshomaru silently, her gaze focused on them. She felt light and carefree at the prospect of living with them. Kagome had insisted that she stay, and although he had not said it in so many words, it was clear Sesshomaru had no intention of chasing her away either. It made little Rin very happy.

So with a smile she followed them and listened to them talk. She was eager to get to know them.

"So," Kagome hummed. "Your sword...it saved her?"

"Yes," was the curt reply.

Kagome exhaled sharply. "So that is why you never use the sword. It cannot cut another."

Sesshomaru hummed in response. "Indeed. My father called it a sword of healing. I was rather insulted when he left it to me instead of the Tessaiga."

Kagome snorted. "Of course you were."

At that Kagome glanced over her shoulder at the girl following them and smiled. "But it saved an innocent life today. Sesshomaru, do you realise how priceless that sword is? How powerful? It can give life!"

The youkai did not respond. Kagome returned her gaze to him, curious about what kind of expression he was currently wearing. He looked thoughtful, but also somewhat annoyed. Kagome chuckled. She knew him well enough by now to know he was agreeing with her, but that her wisdom was frustrating to hear (and to concede to). Feeling overwhelmed with affection she reached out and grasped his hand and squeezed his fingers.

"Thank you," she said softly. "For saving her. And for allowing her to come with us."

Sesshomaru returned the squeeze, then smirked. "At this rate all of the orphans in this land will end up under our care."

Kagome huffed. "So?"

The inu-youkai rolled his eyes.

Rin did not fail to notice the interaction between the two adults. She had wondered how they knew each other, but from what she was witnessing she could guess. She had heard of youkai and humans being together, but had never seen it. The villagers had always said it was unnatural, and that a human who gave themselves to youkai were desperate scum who did not deserve to live. But looking at the two before her Rin knew the villagers had been wrong.

Kagome looked at Sesshomaru the way Rin's mother had looked at her father. And although it was subdued, Sesshomaru also looked at Kagome the way Rin's father had looked at her mother. And her parents had loved each other. Protected each other. Cared for each other. And it was good.
