Marvel wakes me up for my shift at round 3 am. Cato protests me leaving because of my heat source, but he has no trouble going back to sleep once I'm out.
I sit by the fire, attempting to warm up my numb fingers and toes. The temperature dropped drastically in the past few hours, and it's cold enough for me to see my breath clearly in the cold air.
Nothing happens while I'm on watch, so I go to wake Cato up for his shift. He groans and tries to sleep more, but I rip the sleeping bag off of him, exposing his body to the cold wind.
He mumbles as he laces up his boots, but goes and sits by the fire to do his duty. I however, sleep nice and soundly until he comes back in after his shift around 5. We gave Melvin the last shift so that there was no risk of him falling asleep on us, leaving us unprotected in case of an ambush.
Cato stirs around for a few minutes before he gets comfortable again, waking me up completely in the process. "Sorry" he mumbles into my hair once he's settled.
"It's ok" I reply back sleepily, and soon, we're both back to sleeping soundly once again.
Cato wakes up when the sun rises, which is a surprise to me. But, even though he's fully awake, he doesn't get up and go outside. He simply lies next to me and holds my hand while I sleep for a few more hours.
When I do wake up completely, it's around 9 by my guess. "Good morning." Cato says cheerfully as he pushes some hair off of my face.
"Morning to you too." I mumble groggily as I wipe the sleep out of my eyes and groan as I stretch out my aching muscles and healing back.
"You're really cute when you sleep." He tells me with a small smirk. "Thanks…I guess. But that's kind of creepy that you were watching me sleep. Just saying." I respond back slightly sassy.
He laughs and I begin lacing up my boots and pulling my hair up into a pony tail with the only rubber band I'm allowed to have.
"You're so beautiful." Cato says softly as he pushes the hair off of the nape of my neck. "But not like Glimmer." I mumble, thinking he wouldn't hear.
"No, you're not like Glimmer at all. You're smart, funny, athletic, gentle when you need to be, strong and brave when you have to be, stunning, radiant, and pretty smoking hot." He says with a goofy grin
I'm not sure whether he means it or not, but when we kisses me, I know he means it for sure. I kiss him back, but only for a moment.
I climb out of the tent and walk over to the fire, followed by Cato. We all eat our breakfast in silent, warming ourselves by the fire. Cato must have gotten more wood during his watch, because the pile is completely full again.
We finish eating, and I really feel like a bath, but I know it would be crazy due to how cold it is. I head over to the small pile of supplies and search around for something to keep warm other than a sleeping bag.
I find nothing, but then, I remember my sponsors. I know I have plenty that gave loads of money, but we haven't received a thing yet. So either, Brutus and Enorbia are saving it all for something big for the finale, or they think we're fine on our own for now.
Knowing those two, it's a little bit of both. There's many living victors form District 2 that are able to mentor, but Brutus and Enorbia always seem to do the best job. But hey, as long as they get Cato out of here alive, I'm not complaining.
I'm searching through the pile still, when I find a packet of hot chocolate mix. I quickly grab a pot, head to the lake, fill it with water, and place it over the fire to boil.
Once it's boiling, I add the mix, stirring it with a small spoon I found while the water was heating. I grab 4 cups and pour the hot beverage into them equally, and then hand them to the grateful hands of the boys.
I down mine in less than 5 minutes, sighing as I feel it warm up my frozen insides. "That was delicious" Marvel says as he licks his lips. "Is there any more?" Cato asks hopefully.
"Nope, sorry. I could only find the one packet." I respond. The three of them sigh in unison and go back to warming themselves.
After a little while, Melvin notices something. "Look! Over there!" he exclaims as he points to the sky. We look to see a pillar of smoke rising up into the air, and then another one begins as well.
"Stay here" Cato orders Melvin as he tosses him a spear. "Let's go." Cato says with a smirk as we take off in a run in the direction of the smoke.
"Wait, shouldn't at least one of us go and check out the other fire, incase it's some kind of signal to keep us running around?" Marvel asks when we take a break from jogging.
"Good idea. You go that way." Cato says while pointing to the second smoke stack in the sky.
Marvel nods and takes off running the opposite way of us. Cato and I begin our jog to the first smoke pillar. We're almost right on top of it when we're stopped by the sound of a cannon going off.
"Who do you think it was?" I ask, slightly worried it was Marvel. "We'll find out soon, but first we need to check this out." He says as we walk into the small clearing.
"Nothing." Cato says in frustration as he kicks at the now smoldering fire. "Let's head back." He says while turning on his heel and walking back the way we came.
We walk in silence, not having anything to say. I know that he's frustrated about the distraction, but I'm more worried about Marvel.
Even though he'll have to die so that Cato can live, I was hoping he could at least make it to the finale. I'm hoping he'll be able to die fighting like he wanted.
We're almost back the Cornucopia and can see it in sight when something happens. The whole pile we made in the middle of the field blows up. We're almost pushed back from the pressure of the shock wave.
We watch helplessly as all of our supplies are blown to bits. I feel Cato tense up beside me and know he's about to take someone out.
He takes off full charge for the camp, and I follow as closely as I can. Melvin sees us coming and attempts to run, but he trips over a log we set up for a seat.
Cato picks him up by the collar of his jacket and starts shaking him. "What the heck happened?!" he yells at the frightened boy.
"I don't know! Only the one bomb that was triggered was supposed to blow up. Not set them all off! Please, don't kill me! Ple-"He's cut short as Cato takes either side of his head and yanks it to the left, killing the boy instantly.
Cato drops him on the ground and goes to the pile of ashes that used to be our supplies. He yells profanities and kicks anything in sight out of anger.
Cato's always had a temper, but he's never had it this bad. It must be the stress of the games that's causing it.
I watch as he strikes out with his fists now, glad that I'm staying away. I know he's seeing red and probably can't tell the difference between me or some inanimate object.
There's nothing that I can do to calm him down. I just let him lash out, knowing it'll get better soon. He stops suddenly when he picks up a shiny object that wasn't destroyed.
He studies it for a moment, and then throws it on the ground before storming over to me. When he tosses it, I get a glimpse of what it is. To my surprise, it's an arrow.
"I'm killing her. No arguments." He tells me while storming into the tent behind me. "Great, this should get interesting." I mumble before following him in.
