Annabeth

"How nice to see you again Annabeth dear," she said in a tone that implied it was not nice at all to see me again. It was not how I pictured her at all. She was still beautiful, yes, but it was a hard beauty, an angry beauty. She was certainly not like how I knew her when we were children.

"I didn't know you came back. I was so worried about you Piper, we all were."

"Don't lie to me. I know Jason left without a second thought." Her face got even harder and angrier but yet more beautiful.

"Please, Piper, not in front of the children. And yes, Jason did feel terrible about leaving you. He loved you so much."

"Then why did he leave me for that whore?"

"The children! We will not discuss this now!"

Piper turned to the three shocked kids with a look of distaste. "Juniper!" She called, "Show them around camp," she said as a fearful dryad came around a corner. She led them away quietly.

We were alone now, and I wasn't quite certain I wanted to be alone with this new Piper.

"Piper... I don't know what's come over you. You were the kindest, loyalist, best friend one could ever have."

"And you were the most practical person I knew, but look at you now. You're soft, weak. You're too nice to the children, you're babying them-"

"How could you even know that?"

"-they need to be told the truth. Tell them that they're going on a suicide mission to keep you nice and safe in your little heroes capes right here at home."

My jaw nearly fell off I was so shocked. I nearly wanted to cry, but I didn't let myself. To her, I was still the stubborn 17-year-old who went on quests with her. But she, she was different, she was changed, and I didn't understand the threats she was making about the mission. "You know I'd go if I could. And how do you even know about any of this in the first place? What do you mean it's a suicide mission. We don't even have any plans for them to leave camp anytime soon in the first place. I don't like this new Piper. I want my friend back."

"Tell that to Jason."

No matter what she said, I would not believe that this change was brought about by Jason leaving her. The way I knew her, she was the least emotional and most practical of the Aphrodite kids. She didn't go around breaking people's hearts for the sake of breaking people's hearts like the others did, so it didn't seem likely that her heart, her morals, her personality, everything would change from one boy leaving her. So then why did she change so much?
