Fanfiction Blitz 2019: Day Four of Seven

The Phantom Lady

Kaito blinked; then blinked again, as his world was thrown off its axis for the third time. When Fujiko had come to Japan to invite him to a 'girl's night out' this had not been what he had been expecting at all. He figured it would be fun, and it had been. Get all dressed up and go out on the town. Score some free desserts. Admire the amusing faces his foster brother made throughout. But this . . .

The disguised teenager leaned closer to his companion, mindful of the other people in the room. "Wait," she/he said quietly. "Kaasan was a thief?" Why had no one mentioned this before? Though now that Kaito thought about it, it had been his Mother, not his Father, who had first taught him to pick locks.

"Oh yes," Fujiko purred, leaning back in her chair as she fanned herself with a lace handkerchief. More for its effect on the nearby men than to ward off the summer heat. "She was quite good at it too. Still," the thief sighed. "I suppose I can't blame her for her choice. If Kid had swept me off my feet like that, I probably would have said yes too." So romantic. Much more romantic than anything Lupin had ever managed, though the Frenchman did have his own charms to be sure.

A set of perfectly manicured nails tapped the table as the woman's eyes grew thoughtful. "Lady did have quite the collection of counterfeits she liberated from that odious little toad in storage somewhere," Fujiko's nose wrinkled in distaste. Now that was one man she wouldn't let flirt with her for all . . . Well, without significant financial compensation.

"She always said she was going to get back to it one day but," Fujiko shrugged. Waving her hands in a 'what can you do' gesture.

Hmm, Kai made a thoughtful sound in the back of his throat as his gaze flicked to the news program that had sparked their conversation, then back to the older thief. "Do you think they are still there?"

"Probably," Fujiko shrugged. People in their profession tended to plan for the long term.

For a moment Kaitou Rei's distinctive smirk passed over the teenager's features. Well, he thought to himself. It seemed he had his next project. After all, Kaito was nothing if not a dutiful son.

One of these days I am going to post another multi-chapter story in this 'verse. It is not like I don't have ideas for several lying around. Just you know, time.
