Chapter 4

Bruce POV

When Rachel didn't come back Bruce left the coffee shop. He didn't know what had come over him. He formulated a plan to find out who this woman was but asking her out for dinner had not been one of them. Every question he had asked her was met with the truth. Although, she did not bring up her parents. She was heavily guarding herself.

Bruce thought that if he leveled with her on the death of his parents the young woman would be more open with him. But the exact opposite had happened. As he got into his car parked in front of the store, he couldn't get her green eyes out of his head. She was a very beautiful woman.

She was pale, but her skin looked soft. Not a single mark, that he could see. Even though she was wearing a uniform she looked to be in really good shape, but perhaps a little on the thin side. Her hair was bright blonde, and even though it was in a pony tail it still had slight waves and ringlets. Bruce couldn't help but notice the woman's face was flushed whenever he smiled at her or looked her in the eyes.

He didn't know why, but he really wanted to know what her laugh sounded like. When she had mentioned she liked horses, he had remembered his mother.

Bruce pulled out his phone and pressed 8 on his speed dial.

"Mr. Wayne. Can I do something for you" said Natalia, his secretary. "Good afternoon Natalia, can you please contact Dean Weber and tell him I would like to invite Rachel Marie Grey, a 4th year medical student to be an intern at Wayne Tower and assist Dr. Ning" Bruce asked.

"Right away Mr. Wayne" She said before hanging up. Bruce adjusted his tie and looked at his watch. He was 20 minutes late. He had a feeling that this woman was going to cause a lot of trouble for him.

Rachel POV

Rachel walked into her apartment to find Kate lounging on the couch in her PJ's wrapped up in a blanket. She was watching something on TV. Rachel ran to the couch and quick got under the blanket. She was so cold her teeth were chattering.

"Jesus Rach, why are you so cold! Where is your coat?" Kate yelled shoving her friend away. Kate gave her the blanket and all she could see was Rachels head.

"I ran out of work and forgot my coat" Rachel explained trying to rub the feeling back into her hands.

"Why would you do that? For someone who's so smart you sure do some stupid shit" Kate said crossing her arms.

"Bruce Wayne showed up at my job. We ended up sitting together and he drilled me with questions. I freaked out and got out of there" Rachel explained.

Kate almost spit out her juice she was sipping. "Bruce Wayne came to see you! How did he know where to find you? What did you talk about?" shouted Kate who was very excited.

"Calm down. He didn't know I worked there, it was a coincidence. He just asked me where I was from and offered me an internship for the medical program at Wayne Tower" she said.

"He also…asked me to dinner" Rachel said. She could tell her cheeks were going red again. Why does he affect her this way?

"Rachel that is AMAZING! What did you say?" Kate asked. Her eyes were so wide she looked like an anime character.

"I said no" Rachel said. Kate's smile disappeared, and she looked to be thinking of what to say very carefully.

"I just don't think it's a good idea to get caught up in that kind of world. I'm on my own path, and a relationship of any kind is not what I want right now" Rachel said. Kate didn't know anything about her past.

"Well as long as your happy, that's all that matters" Kate exclaimed. Rachel hugged her roommate who she considered to be one of her best friends. She only wished she had someone in her life who could truly know who she was.

Kate got up from the couch and headed into the bathroom to shower. She had study plans with a boy from one of her English classes.

Rachel snuggled deeper into the couch and decided a nap was in order. But something on the TV caught her attention. She grabbed the remote and turned up the volume. It was GC News.

"Detectives found the bodies of Caroline Monroe and Beatrice Small behind a dumpster on 5th avenue street. They were reported missing two weeks ago from their families. They were suspected to have been kidnapped and taken into the underground sex trade. Police are still trying to track the sex traffickers, and rumor is that the Batman is also on the case. Caroline leaves behind a 5 year old girls and Beatrice was an aspiring nursing student from Gotham University. We can only pray for their families at this time and hope this disaster ends soon."

Rachel muted the TV and sat there in deep thought. She had been in Gotham for nearly two years now, and she has yet to take out her costume. Crime has been out of control, and seeing the 5 year old girl on the TV who was not motherless started to eat away at her. A familiar feeling was creeping back into her. Revenge.

There had been one thing that kept Rachel from prowling the rooftops. The Batman. Anything rarely scared her now a days, but she had to admit Batman terrified her. This was his city and if she made her presence known, he would come for her. But who gave him the right to control others. There were other heroes like Superman, Green Lantern, and Wonder woman.

Because of what happened to her, Rachel believed it was her responsibility to protect women and children. And now there was confirmation that Gotham had an underground sex trafficking issue. The amount of women suffering was not known.

"Isn't that terrible" said Kate from the bathroom. She was wrapped in a towel and hair still dripping wet.

"How can people do that. I hope they catch the perps soon. I guess it's been going on for a while. Anyway, do you want to come study with me? We'll probably be out late" Kate asked.

"No I think I'll stay in and just relax" Rachel said. "Ok, suit yourself" Kate said going into their room to change.

Rachel made up her mind. She was going out tonight to see what she could dig up. The thought of her costume in the box under her bed made her tremble with excitement. If she was careful, she could stay out of Batman's site. Her excitement was interrupted from her phone going off. It was an unknown number.

"Hello, this is Rachel Grey" she said a little nervously. When ever unknown numbers called her, she immediately thought of her master. Did he find her?

"Hello Ms. Grey. This is Amanda from Wayne Tower. You have been selected to join the internship program here. Dr. Ning is excited to have such a terrific candidate enter the program. When would be a good day for you to start?" she asked.

Rachel's heart sped up a little. Did Bruce get her into the program? This program was highly sought after. She would be a fool to turn it down.

"I can come in Monday after 3pm. I have class until then" she said. "Perfect. I will send the paper work to your school email. Please read it and fill it out prior to Monday. I will put your arrival time down for 3:30pm. Congratulations Ms. Grey" and then she hung up.

Rachel set her phone down and couldn't help but smile. Things were finally looking up. She laid down on the couch and closed her eyes. She fell asleep with a smile on her face.

Hello everyone. Sorry for the super long hiatus. I'm planning on writing a chapter at least once a week. The story will now start to pick up and Rachel will begin her vigilante work. Please write a review, it helps me to keep writing and lets me know how I'm doing. Thank you!
