Chapter 9: Alice and Edward

BELLA

Six Months Ago

I still don't exactly remember the sensation of falling; although clumsiness seems to have been bred into my DNA, and so the general feeling of falling was familiar. However, that day, as I lugged that box of my textbooks up the staircase and lost my balance, it's not the falling I remember in vivid detail. I remember the fear. The fear of serious, concrete induced, injury. The fear of losing control of my body, and being incapable of stopping my fall. In a moment of self-preservation and cowardice, I closed my eyes.

I came to slowly, performing a thorough self-examination in my head to the tune of "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes", finding the pain centered in my head and neck. The first thing that I became aware of outside of myself after gaining consciousness was the odd sensation of being watched. Then two distinctly different voices trickled into my awareness; one deep and masculine, the other light and girlish.

"…I say we give her a chance to wake up before calling for an ambulance. She's not bleeding, and the egg on her noggin's on the outside. Can you imagine waking up in an ambulance or a hospital and not knowing how you got there?!", the girl asked, her voice rising in pitch.

"Yeah…" the guy trailed off, and continued with, "but, Alice, we don't know this girl's story. She could be a runaway, or a fugitive, or what have you! Plus, we've moved her already, and I read somewhere that you're not s'posed to move a person suffering from unknown injuries. Like, if a person gets hit by a car or somethin', you're supposed to leave em' and wait for the professionals! What if we hurt her by moving her inside. I couldn't-" the guy rambled until he was cut off by Alice.

"Edward. Sweetie, shut up! I swear that imagination of yours… Fugitive!" She said on a laugh. "Now, I'm not saying that you're not right, honey, but you gotta let her decide if she wants medical attention. And besides, nothing looks broken on her, so I think she'll be alright. Okay?" Silence followed her question.

The eerie feeling of being stared at, by strangers no less, pushed me into action. The moment I shifted my head, stabbing pain erupted in the left side of my head. I let out an uncontrollable groan and slowly rolled into a sitting position. Belatedly, I realized that I was on a couch.

The hushed conversation that the couple was in the middle of came to a halt, and I opened my eyes warily to a man and woman around my age staring at me intensely. I shifted my eyes between them trying to piece together what, exactly, was happening. The woman, who was the closest to me, upon seeing my wild-eyed look, threw up her hands in a "don't shoot" manner.

My eyes shifted to the guy again, who was still staring at me intensely and freaking me the fuck out, if I'm being honest. He copied her stance, and took a giant step back, bumping into a side table.

"Would someone mind telling me, what in the ever-loving fuck, is going on here?!" I asked. When they both stared at me with equally wide eyes, I clarified. "Like, who are you people? Where am I? How did I get here?" I asked with rising volume, clutching my pounding head.

"Ummm. Well. I'm Alice, and that's Edward. We live here. We found you unconscious in our breezeway." Alice stated. With a raised eyebrow, she asked, "Who are you? Do you even remember your name?"

Touché, Alice.

I had the strangest urge to feign amnesia just to fuck with them, but fought that back, opting for snark instead. "Of course I remember my own name, and considering you're hospitality, I guess I should tell you. I'm Bella, and I guess I'm you're new neighbor. It's nice to meet y'all." I said, with a southern drawl, causing Alice to snort into a soft laugh, and the corners of Edward's lips to twitch.

A/N: Thanks for reading, friends!

I've had this portion outlined from the moment inspiration struck. I mean, Bella falling up the stairs and knocking herself out on Edward's door is classic!
