CHAPTER THIRTY - SEVEN

(BPOV)

Jacob remained eerily still as I read the many letters, each one of them making me wish more than anything that Sarah was still alive. She had known that her death was imminent. She wrote about it in nearly every letter, as if she saw her own death long before it had happened. She left instructions for Billy on how he could best help Jacob when he first phased and she expressed her longing to be there for him, knowing she wouldn't be.

Every letter seemed to draw me in more than the last. By the time I stopped reading, it was well into the night and my eyes were becoming too heavy to keep open. Sue had offered me a small plate of spaghetti for dinner some time ago, but I hadn't touched it yet. My mind was too consumed with the content of the letters. Sarah's wisdom was astounding.

I placed the book of letters at the foot of Jacobs bed, seeing his chest rise and fall. He looked so peaceful as he rested. I took his hand in mine as I laid my head down and closed my eyes, wishing I could hear the sound of his voice.

When I awoke later, the room was flooded with sunlight. I squinted against the harsh rays, slowly raising my head to gaze up at Jacob. My hand hadn't left his all night.

"I miss your voice, Jake." I sighed into the stillness of the morning.

"He misses yours, too... I'm sure-"

The sound of Billy's baritone startled me as it entered the room.

"He knows your with him. He can sense you being here, Bella."

"I hope so, Billy. I wish there was more I could do for him." I confessed.

"It's more than enough, dear. He needs you."

"I need him, Billy."

My eyes wandered over to the book laying at the end of the bed. Billy was quick to follow my gaze and I watched as his eyes lit up with recognition and reverence.

"I see you've been busy reading."

"I hope you don't mind, Billy. I wasn't trying to intrude or-"

"No dear, I'm glad you've read it. Sarah would want you to hear her words. Especially now.. Jacob and the girls were her entire world. She knew what was coming for her. She knew her fate. I am ashamed to say that I didn't believe her. She tried to tell me they were coming for her and I ignorantly dismissed her fears as simple paranoia. I wish more than anything now that I hadn't."

His words were spoken with sincerity and a sense of true haunting.

"You said they? They were coming for her?" I replied, feeling Jacobs hand suddenly tighten in mine.

"Yes... they... The cold ones. She knew of them and knew they were coming for her. I should have listened to her, Bella. If I had-"

"You can't think like that, Billy. Her death wasn't your fault-"

"It was- I was supposed to protect her. If I had... things may have gone much differently for Jacob. The change may have never set in at all."

I felt the blood drain from my face as his eyes met mine.

"But the Cullen's-"

"They came back after their kind took my Sarah. Carlisle denies any involvement in her death himself, but I don't believe him. Sarah was a good driver. Cautious and alert. She never was one for speeding and the crash-"

He paused, clearing his throat and quickly adverting his eyes from mine before he finished.

"... The crash was so bad that the car was a mangled mess. They had to extract Sarah from the car using the jaws of life and her body was so badly injured from the force of the impact ... she was barely recognizable. The police investigated and found that high speed was a factor in the accident. They determined that she was driving home from her shift at the hospital and swerved to miss an animal in the road. They said her car hit a tree and she was killed upon impact. But I saw her body after. I had to identify her. There were puncture wounds along her inner right wrist and her neck. They couldn't explain what they were from and eventually told me it was from the glass shattering... all of the windows in her car were blown out from the force of the impact. The police closed the investigation after two months, saying that they could find no real evidence of any foul play. But I know for a fact her crash was not an accident."

Jacobs hand tightened in mine upon his last word, causing me to gasp aloud.

"His hand... it's squeezing mine... has been since you came in here."

Billy smiled at me in response, his grin warm and sincere.

"That's a good sign, Bella. That means his man is closer to the surface now than his wolf."

I drew his hand to my lips, placing a kiss there and whispering to him.

"Come back to us, Jacob."

"I'm sorry I told you all that, Bella. It's been a long time since I've really talked about it with anyone other than Sue. She's a good listener."

"What does Sue think about the accident?"

"She believes as I do. We both know that Carlisle aided in my Sarah's death... in one way or another."

I tried to keep my composure as his words sank in, sensing that Billy was keeping more from me than he let on. His dark gaze told me that he knew who took Sarah away from him.

"Why -"

"Sarah knew of them and knew that their calm and personable exterior was no more than just a façade for others around them to see. They were all playing a part. I believe they were very threatened by her knowledge of them. What she could see in them. Sarah had gifts."

"What kind of gifts?"

"She could see things in people... predict the future even before it happened. She started seeing them when she was just a little girl and it scared her at first. She even sought treatment for it when she was a teenager. Her parents wanted her treated for her gifts. They should have accepted them and embraced her for who she was... the very same way I should have. I was foolish not to believe her. There are times I wonder if Jacob has inherited her gifts. I see similarities in them now that he's older. He's always been very in tune with those around him... even when he was just a little boy. He can reach people in a certain way that most others can't and he always seems to know what they need most. Especially with you-"

"He's always been there for me."

"When you both were little and you would spend time with your dad in the Summers, the thunderstorms we had here used to terrify you. Do you remember?"

"... barely..."

"Charlie would try to calm you down but you were so afraid of the loud noise from the thunder. So... you would run to Jacobs room... straight to him. He'd sit with you until the storm let up. Sometimes the two of you would fall asleep in there on the floor. Your father and I didn't have the heart to wake you."

I glanced down, seeing Jacobs fingers still laced through mine and marveling at the memory Billy so easily recalled.

"Maybe you're right? Maybe he does have that gift."

Billy nodded in reply to this, his eyes ever observant now.

"Sarah always said the two of you were meant for one another. Even at the young age you two were when she was still alive. She swore she could see it... sense it."

My eyes stung with tears from his words.

"I want him to wake up, Billy..." I sighed to him.

"He will... I know he will. He's strong enough for this."
