CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE
(RPOV)
Becoming a cold one was something I had never longed for or requested, it was forced upon me. Decided for me without another choice being given. I loathed what I was, knowing what a soulless creature it made me. I was never anything special as a human and always thought of myself as ordinary and even plain. How I wished now that I could go back to the days of feeling this way. Back to the days when Sarah was still around with me. Every time I thought of her, my eyes would sting with tears that would never come. She should be here to see the boy who had turned into the man she had known he would be.
Jacob was every bit as good as his mother had been, the similarities between him and Sarah left me speechless. His caring nature was given directly from her. It was easy to see. I knew the risk of showing myself to him, of getting too close, but after observing him from afar for days when he was on the run, it was clear that I had to help him.
Sarah was my very best friend and I vowed to myself and Billy, following the weeks of her death, that I would always watch out for him.
After the change happened and I became stuck in this cold granite skin, Billy had warned me not to return if I could avoid it. He had explained to me that the elders would not show me mercy simply because of my previous ties with Sarah. His blunt request had hurt, but I knew it was his way of protecting me and I listened to him. I had not stepped foot in Washington more than twice in over a decade.
I had always kept my visits away from La'Push, and would observe Billy and Jacob from afar, spotting them in Forks and being satisfied to see they were looking well. My last impromptu visit had been a month ago and the changes I saw in Jacob had alerted me to his phase. He had followed his bloodline and was no longer the young looking boy from before. His scent lingered through the woods whenever I followed his trail, long after it had gone cold, careful to avoid any run ins with the others from his pack. I had been keeping a closer eye on him, knowing his phase was imminent when the seasons changed last. I could see the Alpha role he was destined to fulfill just lingering beneath the surface and it was a title I knew he would claim sooner rather than later.
The first time I saw Isabella, she had been no more than six years old and it was easy to see that Jacob loved her even then. Sarah took great joy in bringing them to First Beach with her for hours on end and she used to say to me then... "My boy will marry her one day. Just you wait and see."
I used to laugh at her claim in fun, thinking she was mad for making such a bold claim over children who were so young then, but she had proved me wrong, even from beyond the grave. Bella was as beautiful as I had pictured her to be. Her luxurious dark hair blowing in the breeze when she ran outside to greet Jacob at her house. The look of joy on his face plainly evident, and making me stop and think of Sarah's words from years ago.
She threw herself in his arms without care and he took hold of her like she was what he lived for... who he loved. Sarah had been right all along.
I continued to observe from a distance in the few short weeks that followed, knowing that his kind could destroy me without much effort, and a small part of me secretly wanted them to discover my potent scent and put an immediate end to my miserable existence. But not just yet...
I had followed Jacob when he crossed state lines, cautiously waiting till he was miles ahead of me and staying down wind from him at all times. I knew how powerful his senses were and I wouldn't toy with them. His strides were fast and his roar viscious as he ran for days and days through the thick and blinding tree cover. I could see his torment and knew he was losing the fight. I wanted to help him- For Sarah- For what I owed to her.
I had discovered my unique abilities some time after my change, when I had encountered another like me named Victoria. Her red hair long and blowing wildly in the breeze when I followed her to the Forks border upon my arrival to check in with Jacob and Billy months ago now. Her strength and speed matched my own but her senses were somehow sharper and her hunger that for human blood instead of the animal.
She had approached me with an offer of joining her but I had declined, sensing she thirsted for revenge of a certain humans blood to be on her tongue. We had nearly parted ways when she asked me if I knew of the wolves and how she sought to kill them all because of their protection over the one she lusted after. It was then that I knew her intentions and who it was she was after. She described Jacobs wolf form in great detail when she asked me if I had yet to come across their kind. I feigned ignorance, pretending not to know anything until she became distracted by her lust for Bella, long enough for me to catch her off guard. I took hold of her by the throat, hearing her scream once before the sound of her granite skin ripping filled the forest. Her head fell to my feet and her crimson eyes stared widely up at me as I focused hard, pulling forth the power that I had in my hands and igniting the fire between them that turned her into nothing more than ash.
My abilities were unique and I rarely used them because they drained my strength and left me weak and vulnerable when I was through. I had control of the elements around me and I moved them with ease to my liking and advantage. I had yet to come across another like me, for it appeared that I was unmatched.
This made me powerful when needed but would weaken me to the point of returning to a feeble human in the aftermath. I could even bleed if pushed too far, a phenomenon that still left me confused, for I was supposed to be forever immortal and frozen in time. I had taken the time to research more about who I was now and who I had been before, digging deep into my families ancestors and the history there. I discovered I came from a long line of witches dating back to the early eighteen hundreds, reading that some of them had even been burnt at the stake years ago. When I had been first changed, I couldn't control them or understand the meaning of them, but since then I had worked tirelessly at gaining control over the powers I possessed. I had mastered them all and my abilities now made me a force to be reckoned with.
