"Can we go already? You're so slow," Jacy whined.
"I told you I needed to get this disaster zone dealt with." I scrubbed at a plate, trying to get as much junk off as I could, before it went into the dishwasher. The thing was on its last legs and needed all the help it could get.
"But we're gonna be late. I can just go, and you can meet me when you're done." She scrunched up her nose as I scraped at something hard with my fingernail. "I'm old enough to walk three blocks by myself."
"You got a date or something?" I eyed her suspiciously.
"Edward said he'd be there today, and I want to learn the rails."
"Learn the rails… " I chuckled to myself, glancing over at my pre-teen girl in her ripped up shorts and her little pink t-shirt, already decked out in her skate gear, telling me she wanted to 'learn the rails.'
"Mom," she whined again.
"His name is Edward, huh?"
"That's what he said."
"You know… some people tell you made-up names when they meet you. Jack."
"It's not a made-up name." She set her jaw, and I saw Jacob flash across her face. She was right. I called her that. Teasing sometimes, but mostly as an endearment. Big Bold Jack, Dad called her.
"Ok, fine." I threw down the plate, soap suds flying. "Let's go then, Power Girl. Got a skate date with Edward." I bumped hips with her as I slid into the hallway and threw on my shoes, the ratty Chucks that I'd worn holes through but couldn't let go. I grabbed my big sunhat and the dumb book I was absolutely not intending to read and motioned to her to hurry up. "Come on; let's go. He's waiting!"
"If you're going to be embarrassing, you have to stay by the cars again."
