Chapter 3
It was monday. As I walked through the halls of Gotham High I was swarmed by students. Rumors had spread throughout the student body. Some people thought I broke the Joker's nose. Others thought I shot a man. And then there was this one strange one floating around that me and Robin made out. Pssh! Like that'll happen! I sat at my usual lunch table with all my gal pals. I couldn't get a word in edge wise as they all talked about my incident on Saturday. More rumors were flying and I couldn't correct anything they said! I just sat and stared at my sandwich. I wasn't really that hungry. I had lost my appetite ever since I read that horrifying letter from the Joker. He was after me. I had pretty much locked myself in my bedroom all of Sunday. I hadn't eaten all day. My mom practically forced a granola bar down my throat this morning. I had barely slept. The Joker. That was all that was on my mind. I couldn't take this. My heart had been pounding. I was on HIS hit list. I felt my fingers tapping nervously on the table. How the hell was I going to get myself out of this?
"Hey, Sarina girl!" Rebecca's voice chimed in. I glanced up at her excited face. Ever since her daddy made that deal with Mr. Wayne and got her a nose job, she was loving life.
"Hmm?" I inquired, not really caring.
"I'm throwing a huge party at my parents Summer home at Gotham lake tonight. You should so come!" She smirked.
"Like yeah Sarina. Billy Parr is coming!" Teresa added. Billy Parr huh? Senior Football star. All star champ. Blonde hair, blue eyes. Every girl dreamed about him. Hell, every girl practically dated him! I knew all the other girls sitting at this table had had their fair share of so called 'encounters' with him. There was a rumor floating around school that he had a bet with some of the football players that he could, (oh how did he put it?) 'Get a Taste of Gibson' before the end of the year. Gah! Boys are so stupid. That certainly wasn't going to happen.
"I don't think I-" I started.
"Oh C'mon, it'll be so fetch! It'll be like, celebrating you kicking the Joker's ass er…whatever." Sandra replied. Funny. Just last week she was telling the whole school that I played for the other team. No matter. Girls will be girls. I knew that all too well. And I hated that everyone kept talking about the Joker around me! I was so freaked out I could barely take it.
"Do you think he's mad?" Another girl chimed in.
"Huh?" I questioned.
"Do you think The Joker's planning his revenge?" She added.
"Maybe he'll come into your house at night and kill you in your sleep!" Rebecca shouted. I gulped. This was seriously not helping.
"Nah, Joker wouldn't do that! He's probably tie her to a pole and let his hyenas eat her." Sandra argued.
"No way! Joker would probably stab out her eyes or something like that." Teresa scoffed. All the girls erupted into a conversation on how the Joker would torture and murder me. I couldn't take this anymore! What if he did come into my room tonight and take me? I couldn't risk it! That thought was eating me alive!
"Okay, I'll go!" I shouted. The girls all grinned as the bell rang. Saved by the bell! I grabbed my bag and practically sprinted to my next class.
School had just ended. My mom had managed to get here on time. Hell, she was early! I bet the whole incident had scared the crap out of her. I couldn't blame her. As soon as we got home my mother sat me down at the kitchen table. This couldn't be good.
"Sarina…..there's a lot that we need to talk about." My mother said.
"Oh god, not the birds and the bees?" I chuckled lightly. I always tried to bring humor into serious situations. My mother remained unamused.
"I don't think it's safe for you in Gotham anymore." She sighed. My eyes widened at that comment. What was going on here?
"Mom-" I tried
"Gotham is crawling with scum and psychos. I should know. We need to get you out of here." She said, on the verge of tears.
"What about your job? My friends? I mean it's just…." I argued. I just couldn't believe what my mom was suggesting. Moving? Sure, this place was a cesspool of crime and evil. Gotham Shitty was no dream boat. But Batman could handle it! Couldn't he? I guess that Joker incident really scared my mom. Don't get me wrong, it scared me too! Maybe…..maybe we should move… No! I liked my home!
"We can find new ones!" My mother comforted as she rubbed my back. Not working. "Maybe we can try Metropolis. No, Bludhaven? We'll figure it out honey. I promise. It'll be a fresh new start!" I wasn't pleased. I didn't like the idea of starting a whole new life. But I didn't like the idea of confronting the Joker anytime soon. I was so conflicted! "Now go to bed! You have school tomorrow!" I grumbled to myself as I trudged to my room. This was so much to take in. How could anyone deal with so much stress at once? Ugh! I needed to get out of here. What if the Joker came after me in my sleep like the girls at lunch said. Maybe he'd melt my skin off in a boiling pot of acid! No, I couldn't think of this. I needed to take this off my mind. I grabbed my phone and started to dial.
"Hello?" Rebecca's voice chimed in over the receiver.
"When does your party start again?" I asked with a smirk.
I carefully climbed down the fire escape. I always find it funny. I've never actually used a fire escape to get out from a fire. Just to sneak out from time to time. I didn't do it often. Only when I had to. Like tonight! I landed on the ground as I turned towards the parking lot. Rebecca said that she was sending someone to pick me up. I REFUSED to walk there. A lunatic would walk five miles while she was being hunted by a killer clown. Plus, Mom would know if I took her car. She always had her keys on her. So, Rebecca managed to get someone to come down and pick me up. I was just hoping that whoever she sent was sober. Probably not. I sighed as I tried to stay closer to the bushes. If my mom happened to look out the window, she wouldn't notice me in my position. But she rarely looked out the window anyway.
"You know the Joker has a hit on you." A voice informed me. I jumped at the stranger. I turned sharply towards the voice to find none other then the Boy Wonder himself.
"You again?" I asked, slightly annoyed.
"Try to contain your enthusiasm." He retorted. That's when the sudden realization of what he had previously said hit me.
"Wait...Joker has a hit on me?" I inquired. My heart started racing. Robin nodded.
"$500,000 for you dead. $1 million for you alive." Robin explained. I gulped.
"Guess I'm worth a lot of money." I chuckled lightly, trying to soften the mood. Mostly for me anyway.
"Not at all." Robin said. "So what exactly are you doing in a parking lot this late. It's a school night, ya know?"
"That...doesn't concern you." I snapped. I didn't want this caped crusader prying at my social life.
"Rebecca Miller's party?" He asked. My eyes widened.
"How did you-?" I began to ask.
"Doesn't matter." He said sharply. "Batman sent me here to make sure you were safe. So I suggest you head back inside." Bird Boy made an excellent point. It probably was safer in my house. Or was it? Joker probably knew where I lived. He could easily send his goons to get me! Or someone else. Besides, I didn't like how Bird Brain was bossing me around. A pair of tights doesn't make you the boss of me! I certainly wouldn't follow his demands. He was no better then me.
"Who died and made you king?" I growled. "Wouldn't I be much safer in a giant crowd then alone in my room? Isn't that the first place people look?"
"If you're at home Batman and I can keep an eye on you." Robin explained. Oh, so now he and Batman were stalking me? This is getting crazy! They're not the police!
"I think I can handle myself. Thank you." I replied. I crossed my arms and turned away. I felt him grip me by the shoulder.
"You may want to think things through more carefully. A homicidal maniac is hunting you down and all you want to do is go to a stupid party?" He argued. I pushed his meaty hand off of me.
"If it gets me away from you, then yes!" I shouted.
"You're crazy!" He yelled. I spun around sharply. I rose onto my toes to my full height, my eyes at his noes.
"Says the man in the spandex!" I shrieked.
"If you don't listen to me I'll-" He replied.
"You'll what? Beat me up? Would you really punch a girl?" I laughed.
"You clearly have never seen me fight Poison Ivy." He snapped.
"That plant lady has absolutely nothing on me." I growled. Clearly I'm was so over exagerating here but Bird Boy took the bait. Just to add injury to insult, I flung my fist as it slammed into his jaw. He stumbled back. He looked up at me, shocked.
"Maybe we outta throw you in Arkham." He grimaced.
"I'd like to see you try." I replied. His brow furrowed as he gave me an angry glare. "You better head back to the nest Robin. Batman probably needs you to wash the batmobile." Man, I was being a wicked bitch tonight! Maybe I should really think before I say things. That's when Robin threw a punch at me. I caught his fist and kicked him in the side. He merely stumbled. But he quickly regained his composure and managed to get a punch in.
"Guess you really are the girl punching type." I growled. His expression changed as he realized he had punched a civilian.
"Just watch your back, Gibson." He murmured as he disappeared into the night. I rolled my eyes.
"Don't forget the wax!" I yelled into the night. God I hated the boy wonder. Just as I thought that, a car rolled up in front of the apartment complex. No...not a car. A limo? Was that my rid. That's when the passenger door opened. A big man got out of the limo.
"Sarina Gibson." Was written on it. I guess this was my ride.
"That's me." I said to the man. He said nothing as he opened the backseat door for me.
"You must be Rebecca's brother?" I questioned.
"Sure kid." He replied. That wasn't exactly the answer I was hoping for. My mother's voice popped into my head.
"Don't get in any stranger's car!" Her voice cautioned. I pondered her advice momentarily. She never did say anything about limousines. I entered the car as the man got in the seat next to me. Oh no. I'd have to make conversation with him on the ride to Rebecca's. How wonderful. The limo started up and we were off. After a few minutes, the big man finally spoke up.
"I hope you like riddles." He grinned evilly. I raised an eyebrow. That's when he lunged.
My whole body tensed up as I felt the man's rough, meaty arms wrap around me. I tried to fight but my strength was nothing compared to his. Besides, he immediately covered my mouth with a piece of cloth. What was that stuff called? Chlorophyll? Whatever, I sucked at geometry. My vision went blurry. I tried to fight, but my limbs didn't want to move. My eyelids gained twenty pounds as I tried to fight it off.
No such luck.
