Edward showed back up three hours later.

Two skateboards. A longboard. A bunch of new wheels. A helmet, grey and red and probably too big for her. Some magazines. Hundreds of stickers. He gave her a high five and handed me two pairs of knee pads, some wrist guards, and a box of Band-Aids.

"Very funny."

He winked at me.

They sat on the living room floor for an hour while he showed Jacy how to change out the wheels, and they plastered the bottoms of the boards with those stickers. He told her about his buddies in the skate magazines. Invited us to a competition the next weekend, two hours away. Left with another high five for her, and we stood on the porch in the dark, listening to her roll around the house, chatting excitedly with herself.

"Just an extra board, huh?"

He shrugged, smiling at me. "Couldn't help it."

"You're really good to her."

"She's good for me. Reminds me why I like skating."

"Were you forgetting?"

"Some days."
