"Mom?" Jacy was shoving a hot dog into her mouth so fast you'd think the girl never got fed. She was going to eat me out of house and home before she stopped growing. She'd sprouted two inches over the summer, stretch marks across her back, and now her head fit comfortably in the crook of my neck when she hugged me. I could see the teenager peering out of her baby face, the future woman unfurling just below the surface.

It was terrifying.

"Yeah?" I resisted the urge to wipe the ketchup off her mouth because she'd hate me for an entire day over it.

"Can I move into the basement?"

"The basement?" I made a face. "It's like a cave."

"I think it's cool. It has windows and that little deck. I could paint it, and you could have some privacy." She eyed me like she knew. She did know. She'd caught us in the shower last week and still hadn't let us live it down. Two weeks ago, Edward was dry humping me into the countertop when she walked in from school. She screamed so loud, my ears were still ringing.

It was the first time I'd ever been scolded by my own child.

"It's cold down there."

"I'll get a heater."

"What about spiders?"

"They sell this cool stuff at the store, You spray it everywhere and boom, no spiders."

I visibly shuddered.

"Come on, I just wanna play my music loud and not have to listen to Edward try to beatbox in the shower anymore. He sucks."

"He does," I giggled.

"And the bathroom is literally right on the other side of my wall. Mom. Please." She looked at me with that pleading eye thing she'd perfected.

I wiped the ketchup off of her mouth and said, "I'll think about it."
