We stood off to the side of the crowd as Edward spoke briefly to a kid holding a microphone. He'd finished his first run in a blaze of glory, and it was showing in his face—the glow beaming out from him.

"Hey, man, you've been holding out on us. Jacy? That girl is something else."

He glanced over at us, his smile growing wider, and the glow getting brighter. "She's the best—you better keep your eyes on her."

"You're still in Sacramento?"

"It's a great place to be. I've got everything I need. I skate a bunch and sell boards to kids on my off time." Lie. He gave most of them away. He got drunk one night and admitted to me that he paid for them at the end of the month.

"It's been almost two years since we've seen you out here. We were all pulling for you after that fall you took in Vail, and I'm sure everyone would all love to see you get back out more. What are your plans for the future?"

"My leg is blown, man. It hurts like a mother sometimes. I don't really know what's gonna happen." Edward shrugged, and I looked at the hem of his shorts, the scar hidden behind the fabric and frowned. He didn't tell me it still hurt.

"Life must feel kind of slow after everything you were doing, man. The tours, the X games…"

Edward's eyes met mine over the microphone. "Dude, my life is dope. I love skating, and I'm happy in Sac. I've got a chill job, a house, and the sexiest old lady you've ever seen. Jacy is killing it here today. It doesn't get better than this. I'm happy"

The glow was blinding.

Old lady.

"He didn't mean it like that." Jacy was watching me warily. She knew me too well.

"I'm not an old lady."

"Duh. It's just a saying."

"How come you get to be his best friend?"

"Because I am."
