Chapter 15: Drinking with an Old Pal

After dinner, Roy and Alice decided to take a walk, since the night sky was so clear and there was a calm breeze. They walked through Central City for a while, watching the cars and people pass by, and occasionally glancing up at the sky to look at the stars and moon shine brighter than the silver ring on Alice's finger that was in the shape of a claw holding an eyeball that had a royal blue iris.
"While we're out, there's someone we should visit," Alice said.
"Who," Roy asked.
"You'll see," she said, walking a little bit ahead of him.
"Okay," Roy replied, unsure of who she could be talking about. "Oh, right," he said suddenly remembering something. He laid his arm around her neck. "We're supposed to be a couple right," he said when she grabbed his hand to move his arm off of her.
"Fine," Alice reluctantly said.
After almost an hour of walking, Alice stopped in front of a liquor store. "We should get something to bring with us," she said as she lead Roy into the store.
"Hey, welcome back," the store owner said with a grin.
"Hey Tony," Alice replied while walking to the counter. "What've you got today?"
"I just got a shipment this morning," the store owner, Tony, said. He reached under the counter and pulled out a box full of bottles of liquor from various countries, and sat the box on the counter.
Alice examined them one at a time, then smiled and said, "you've got a deal." She handed him a large wad of cash. "This should cover everything." She looked at Roy. "Let's go."
Roy nodded and picked up the box.
"Wait, this is way too much," Tony said as the two were walking to the door.
"Keep the change," Alice said before the couple walked out of the store.
"So, do you know everyone who sells booze in Central," Roy jokingly asked Alice as they walked down the street.
"Possibly, though I do know many people in all professions," Alice replied. "Are you sure you're okay with carrying that?"
"It's not that heavy," he replied. "So who else do you know?"
She looked at him, "that's an odd question, but I know more people than I could count."
"I meant out of the people that I know," Roy said.
"I know what you meant," Alice replied. "Turn here," she said before turning left at an intersection.
Roy followed closely behind her. "You never did tell me where we're going."
"I don't have to tell you," she said, suddenly stopping. "We're here."
Roy looked around. "Am I missing something?"
Alice rolled her eyes. "Ri's right, you really are a moron sometimes." She looked left then right before crossing the street with Roy hurrying behind her.
Once they reached the other side of the street Roy finally realized where they were. "We're meeting someone in a cemetery," he asked.
"In a way, yes," Alice replied, walking into the cemetery.
"Who are we meeting? This is a weird place to drink," Roy said, but there was no response.
When Alice finally stopped in front of a grave, she turned to Roy and grabbed the biggest bottle out of the box. "Grab one if you want to." She sat on the grass in front of the tombstone. "I bet you're surprised to see us here together," she muttered to the cold, silent stone.
Roy had no idea what was going on until he looked over her shoulder and saw the name Maes Hughes on the tombstone. He froze, nearly dropping the box. "You...you knew him?"
Alice opened her bottle and took a large gulp, which left the bottle a little over halfway full. "He was a damn good friend," she said, still not looking at Roy
"Yeah..." Roy took a bottle out of the box and sat down next to her, placing the box on the other side of him. "How'd you meet him?"
"It was a long time ago," Alice began, slightly hesitating to continue. "I was in Central for a little while, and we just met one day in the library."
"You've known him for that long? It's strange that he never mentioned you," he commented as he opened his bottle.
"A lot of people never mention me," she replied. "I don't get involved with things unless I choose to, so many things about me are secrets."
Roy took a sip from his bottle, and looked down at the headstone. "Even so, I can't believe he didn't tell me anything."
Alice looked at Roy, and said, "it wasn't his fault. You know as well as I do that he was a great friend and did what he could to help. Him not telling you wasn't a lack of trust; it was him keeping a promise, and you know that he would never betray a friend's trust."
"I guess you're right," he said in a low voice.
The two drank and talked for hours. They finally decided to leave shortly after they finished the bottles of liquor. They helped each other up, and walked away. Roy's arm was wrapped around Alice's neck, and her arm was wrapped around his waist as they helped each other balance, while drunkenly talking and laughing all the way back to Roy's home.
Once they got there, Roy struggled to unlock the door. He nearly fell from leaning forward too much when he opened the door, but Alice caught him, then the two went to his room.

The next morning, Alice woke up, and ran to the bathroom to vomit, which woke Roy up. He could barely open his eyes before feeling an intense pain once a ray of sunlight shined through the curtains, and right into his red eyes.
"Fuck," Roy groaned in pain as he immediately closed his eyes again, and covered his head with the blankets.
After emptying her stomach, Alice flushed the toilet then went to the sink to brush her teeth. "I hope you don't have to work today," Alice said while brushing her teeth.
"What day is it," he asked from underneath the blankets.
"I think it's Friday," she replied after she finished brushing her teeth.
"Ugh," Roy groaned. "Hand me the phone so I can call in."
"You know that Ri won't like th-," Alice paused once she noticed that her clothes were on the bedroom floor. "Fuck, please tell me we didn't," she said, quickly trying to pick up their clothes.
"I don't know," he mumbled.
Alice stood up and sighed in frustration, dropping the clothes on the ground. She stared at the heap of blankets that hid Roy from all light, and said in a very serious tone, "get up. You have to go to work, and I have things to do today."
"I can't" he whined, not moving.
She went into the bathroom, grabbed a bottle of pain medicine, then loudly slammed it down on the nightstand next to where Roy was on the bed. "Take this and get up. If you call in sick, Ri will know, and she'll be here trying to get your lazy ass out of bed."
"Fine," he whined, then he reached his arm out of the blankets to grab the medicine bottle. He took a couple of pills before very slowly struggling to get out of bed.
"Since it's almost time for you to leave, you can shower first," Alice said as she quickly put on Roy's shirt, then walked to the bedroom door.
"Fine," Roy said, pouting as he walked to the bathroom.
"I'll make some coffee," Alice said before leaving the bedroom. She walked into the kitchen and started a very strong pot of coffee.
As she waited for the coffee to finish brewing, she looked in the refrigerator for something precooked to eat, and heard the phone ring. She paused, and looked at the clock. "Shit," she exclaimed, knowing who was calling.
Alice quickly went into the bedroom and knocked on the bathroom door. "Hurry up; you're late and Ri is calling," she yelled.
"Alright, alright," Roy said, turning off the shower.
Alice opened the bathroom door and handed Roy the phone, ignoring the fact that he was completely naked. "The next time it rings, answer it. You know how mad she'll be if you don't."
"She'll be mad anyways," he retorted. "She'll know that I'm hungover anyways."
"Yes, but she'll be even more angry if you don't answer her calls," Alice replied. "Hurry up; I'll put your coffee in a thermos." She went back to the kitchen, and Roy quickly finished getting ready for work.
By the time Roy had finished and gone into the kitchen, Alice had put his coffee in a thermos and was drinking hers out of a large mug.
"Don't forget the jacket," Alice said between sips.
"Thanks," Roy replied as he grabbed his thermos and hurried to the door, grabbing his jacket off of the couch as he passed it. He made sure that he had everything before rushing out the door.
"Fuck," he yelled when he saw that his car was not in the driveway.
Alice walked outside. "What's wro-," she stopped speaking as soon as she noticed the issue. "Fuck, it's still at the restaurant." She walked to the street and whistled for a taxi.
The taxi appeared and she handed the driver a small wad of cash, saying, "take him to Central Command, and keep the change."
"Thank you," Roy said. He kissed her cheek then quickly got into the car.
"You left your keys, so I'll get the car," she said before the taxi drove away.
